Greg Swinehart & Joe Sky-Tucker
30 years later, it hasn't aged a day! (Just kidding.)If you can get past Janice to join us for this episode, and that's a BIG if… Greg and Joe's conversation will feel a lot like your missions in Cairo: A cake walk, thanks to the training. So hop on your horse, walk it into an elevator, and get on our level
We're celebrating our 1st anniversary with the turbo-charged, melodrama-soaked, gravity-defying classic that redefined what a Great Bad Movie truly is. Fast Five is the Citizen Kane of car-based heist movies. We saved this one for a special occasion, because Fast Five isn't just any movie — it's a beautifully chaotic mix of telenovela-level emotional showdowns, dialogue that sounds philosophical but means almost nothing, and incredible action sequences with things you've never seen before. Is it absurd? Absolutely. Is it brilliant? Unquestionably. Is it a little bad? Ummmmmm, all we can say is we love every second of it.Come celebrate with us as we toast to one year of great cinematic achievements, and honor the film that somehow made dragging a vault through Rio with two Dodge Chargers look cooler than it has any right to.Check out this episode's page on our websiteSubscribe to Great Bad Movies wherever you listen to podcastsMore Great Bad Movies online:InstagramGreat Bad Movies WebsiteYouTubeEmail us at greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. We are joined by the amazing Scott Erickson to discuss JURASSIC PARK, a heartwarming tale of how a billionaire decides to bring back prehistoric murder machines for profit, a motive that has no real precedent in today's world. We'll dive into the real questions—What ice cream does Joe spare no expense on? Should Neapolitan ice cream be equally chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry? How does Jeff Goldblum somehow made sweaty chaos theory sexy. There's obviously a LOT to talk about. Also, we get to the real MVPs: Timmy, the trolling younger brother, Newman's Barbasol can, Samuel L. Jackson's off-screen demise(?), and that poor lawyer who just wanted a quiet moment on the toilet. From velociraptors who learned how to open doors to a T-Rex that follows no rules of physics, we're covering all the glorious nonsense that makes Jurassic Park a high-budget disasterpiece. So grab a flare, hold onto your butts, and let's see if life, uh, finds a way… to make this episode worth your time.Scott chose this movie because he talks about the Jurassic Park series in his hilarious book and one man show called Say Yes: A Literary Of Not Giving Up On YourselfSee the show hereRead the bookYou can also learn more about Scott, buy his art, and generally get on his level at https://www.scottericksonart.comSubscribe to Great Bad Movies wherever you listen to podcasts: https://linktr.ee/greatbadmoviesFind us online:InstagramGreat Bad Movies WebsiteYouTubeEmail us at greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Dev Patel woke up and chose absolute (heartbreaking) chaos, directing himself in a revenge thriller that's basically "John Wick meets Indian mythology but more SAD and ANGRY." This masterpiece has Patel literally wearing a gorilla mask to get repeatedly beaten in underground fight clubs for money before transforming into a one-man apocalypse against corrupt elites. But what makes this cinematic sledgehammer truly magnificent is how it's simultaneously the most visceral action debut since The Raid AND a scathing political allegory about class warfare that features Dev Patel's character learning knife skills from an outcast Indian communtiy. The movie swings wildly between heartbreaking cultural commentary and scenes where our hero gets his face literally set on fire while fighting in a burning kitchen. Mentioned in this episode:Dev Patel's interview in Vanity FairThe trailer for Dev Patel's animated short, RoborovskiThe Fresh Air interview with Walter Murch, sound designer for Francis Ford Coppola's biggest movies. It's time to celebrate the heroes at the Bio-Cover Unit, and make fun of families who bizarrely graze each other's faces with their fingers. Joe decides if loving this movie is wrong, he doesn't want to be right. Greg has divisive, controversial takes on John Travolta and Boat Chases, and an unfettered love of loud fabrics and BOOM SHOES. This episode is dedicated in loving memory to Anderson, Montgomery, Berkely, Pinkus, Gianelli, and Winters. Tom Cruise refuses to age or stop being the main character of reality itself. He can't stop, because he has to train a bunch of beautiful people to fly into a weirdly specific trench run that's totally not the Death Star. This is cinema at its most perfectly ridiculous and ridiculously perfect. What elevation is the hard deck right now? Is that the biggest American flag ever made in their staff room? Is Ed O'Neal in this movie?? We don't shy away from the difficult conversations on this one. Does Joe think this movie deserves a Best Picture nomination? (He doesn't.) Can Greg watch a Top Gun movie without thinking of a Hot Shots movies? (He can't.) What elevation is the hard deck NOW? Has it changed?? Don't tell Jon Hamm, who is currently looking out his window while speaking to you. It's time to shoot at sunset/sunrise, paint on some sweat, and play football with uncomfortable clothing. That's right, it's time for TOP GUN: MAVERICK.Play along with drinking games and trope lightning rounds as Greg and Joe have the only conversation that needed to happen. Can we have fun? David Leitch says YESSSS. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spend two hours trading kindergarten-level insults about each other's height and baldness while saving the world from a techno-virus and Super Smart Idris Elba. Being a Fast & Furious movie, we obviously have FAMILY with Venessa Kirby and Helen Mirren… So we're now up to 5 perfect people to cast in a movie. Sprinkle in Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Hart, Rob Delaney, Cliff Curtis, Eiza González. I mean, you had us at David Leitch. But the cast of this thing is everyone we want to hang out with for two hours. So… That means it's time for a new Great Bad Movies episode. Greg and Joe discuss how their perception of this movie has changed in the last 5 years, explain “Hobbs & Shaw Travel Logic,” and where Death Race would fit in the Fast & Furious Power Rankings. As always, they create drinking games for the film and answer the most important questions. We're celebrating John-uary with a puppy-avenging assassin who's also the emotional victim of car theft. Keanu Reaves has to return to a luxury murder hotel to drop some gold coins (Chuck E. Cheese-style) again. Keanu called his favorite stunt guys, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, who say they'll only do the stunts if they can also direct for the first time. You know what all that makes? A game-changing new era of Great Bad Movies. Keanu Reeves delivers the most emotionally devastating "Yeah" in cinema history, and funniest line in this movie is “Oh.” Twice. So it's time to start Dafoe-ing and check in with Joe and Greg, who have the conversation that needed to happen about a movie that slowly but thoroughly changed the lives of everyone in the GBU (Great Bad Universe.) They ask the important questions, create unique drinking games… Basically everything you'd need to live a better life. A heartwarming story about redemption and drapery, with great performances, direction, story, action, and um.... Did you know there was a 6th Terminator movie? A lot of people don't. It was a proper sequel to T2, and it was incredible. 5 years ago, critics and audiences alike praised this movie, but... It doesn't seem to exist anymore. That all changes here and now.Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes and Gabriel Luna are quite good at the core of the story, and then Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger show up to create a best case legacy sequel. It's time for us to finally have the conversation that needed to happen about Terminator: Dark Fate. Before we go on, where do you stand on bad guys that can turn their hands into swordy things? If that sounds like something, this is the movie for you. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Joe and Greg laugh harder than they ever have discussing a basically perfect movie: Incredible action scenes, fantastic performances, and maybe no script? This is the shortest and potentially most entertaining James Bond movie, except for the other ones that are much, much better. And listen… Sometimes the conversation that needs to be had takes a while. In this case 40 minutes longer than the actual film. But after you listen to this episode you, dear listener, will know everything that you need to know. Play along with our drinking games and important questions and just enjoy the ride…Find us online:InstagramGreat Bad Movies WebsiteEmail UsYouTube Hosted on Acast. Celebrate the season with the second best Christmas movie, where parking tickets are a slippery slope to fighting terrorists. Die Hard 2 confirms John McClane only fights crime on holidays, and it has everything you could possibly need: A great (constantly yelling) cast, bad guys and good guys who don't want John McClane around, a brief one-on-one with someone named Telford, louder than normal gunshots, and a brand new game called Borrow, Steal, Kill. Do you want to see 47 shots of snowmobiles? We have great news for you. Were you hoping for some kind of grunt/whimper acting? You're in luck. Do you miss movies edited for TBS? We've got you.So grab elderly woman's taser, head over to the skywalk annex, and get ready to party with Mister Falcon in an adventure that will blow you sky high. Greg and Joe remember how Bruce Willis could do no wrong in their eyes back in the day, answer important questions, create new drinking games, and somehow find a weird excuse to add another Limp Bizkit song to our playlist. We don't feel great about it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Prepare to ditch whatever you're doing so we can talk about PLANE, which is a movie about a plane. Before we go on…. You should probably ask all the lawyers to leave the room. Greg and Joe discuss Gerard Butler's commitment, their love of situation rooms, and what they'd do if their cell phone died (don't worry, it makes sense). Long story short, we're pretty sure the avionics are down, but this episode is a stick of dynamite and it's about to blow. Play along with new drinking games, answer important questions with us, and in general lament Trailblazer Air making money decisions. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week on Formulaic Bish-Bosh, the MCU and GBU (Great Bad Universe) crossover episode is finally here. Greg and Joe have the conversation that needed to happen about our greatest actors, producers, and second unit directors, who team up to make a popcorn movie that's better than anyone anticipated. It's real to both of them, and they're not afraid to say it at the dinner table with their fake Russian parents.Take a drink every time Greg makes a sound effect and every time Joe complains about CGI action. Three words: Great Great Movie. Our second Tony Scott/Denzel Washington movie in a series of five. We swap out Man on Fire's cartel and BHBs with Chris Pine and a runaway train. And you know what? It's amazing. Because it turns out a train with no brakes is a TRAIN WITH NO BRAKES. It's a movie so timeless that we're embarrassed for all the other movies, forever. Is this movie just a metaphor about our stunning mortality in the face of impending death? Probably not. Is this a movie with a ton of literal helicopters all over the place? YES. It's time for us all to be the Ned in somebody's life, and hop in our truck, needlessly peel out, and tell someone you love about 2010's Unstoppable. Hosted on Acast. In a very special Marky Mark episode, Joe and Greg discuss how Wahlberg starts the movie with short hair, but then has a ponytail, and then short hair again... So to answer your question: Yes, there's a LOT to unpack here. Joe dares to ask if we should take Marky Mark seriously, and Greg just kind of Gregs a lot. See if you can follow any coherent plot (if you find one please let us know.) Play along with our drinking games and listen for new tropes. This movie has it all. Hosted on Acast. 2003's biggest surprise (besides The OC and maybe Arnold becoming a governor.) A movie, star, and director that are all SO much better than you'd expect. Remember 2003? This movie encapsulates it. The Rock is a professional bounty hunter who hates his job, guns, and a wannabe Indiana Jones named Travis (Seann William Scott), who's too busy searching for a mythical golden artifact in the Amazon to answer his dad's phone calls. Rosario Dawson is reliably great in a well-written part that's basically Karen Allen from Raiders of the Lost Ark minus the drinking competition (
A movie about grown ups, who go to work and solve crimes, in shorts. We know pants are important to you. You probably wonder, “how are these movie detectives constantly running around in full length pants??” That's why this week's episode is about 1993's Striking Distance with Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker. They opted for short pants, because we can all make decisions. Quick question: Is there a distance left to strike? Play along with our drinking games, important questions, and insightful tips on how to have a conversation in the middle of a car chase. This movie is a who's who of “hard boiled” male actors chewing the scenery. Secure the stern line and get ready for a movie where MOST of the people seem to be enjoying themselves, minus Bruce Willis. Probably because of the shorts? Probably because of the shorts. (If you've read this far, you should know that we determined there was no distance left to strike.) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A truly great, but also delightfully ludicrous modern masterpiece of Hollywood excess... A movie that swings for the fences and ends up in the parking lot, yet somehow, that's exactly what makes it great. We love funny Gosling, we love Emily Blunt... And together they make something bigger than the sum of its parts. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Stop it. This is a Great GREAT Movie. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's essentially perfect dynamic is the heart of this incredible summer-kablooie movie. This isn't a bad movie podcast, it's a great movie podcast, but... That said... Sometimes those great movies have Jean-Claude Van Damme in them. In this case, Joe and Greg don't even pretend this movie has badness in it... They were too busy holding their breath and enjoying Doug Liman's classic film, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer. The film's genius lies in its ability to mix high-stakes action with genuine humor. Just when you think you're watching a serious war movie, Cruise's comedic timing kicks in, turning imminent death into a punchline. It's a blend of Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers, but, you know... Super good. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A chef's kiss homage to Die Hard and we are all better for it.The freeway wasn't finished, so they jumped the bus. The subway track wasn't finished, so they jumped the track. The script WAS finished, but they threw out the first act. There are 100 more reasons why this is basically a perfect film, and Greg and Joe list them all.Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock begin their amazing chemistry that continues through their careers, Dennis Hopper is a great bad guy (or not, according to Greg), sunsets somehow happen inside an elevator, glorious descriptions of explosions… This is basically just a lovefest for one of the greatest “Die Hard in a…” movies ever.(Meta drinking game, take a sip every time Joe says “spectacular” or Greg discusses helicopters.)There will be a pop quiz at the end of the episode so start studying.#speed #keanureeves #sandrabullock #bombonabus #diehardina #spectacular #helicopter Hosted on Acast. If this movie isn't perfect, it's definitely perfect-adjacent... In this episode, Joe controversially asserts that Extraction might not be a Great Bad Movie®, but rather a Great Great Movie. His evidence is almost irrefutable: Over the top action scenes, Chris Hemsworth fighting for redemption against faceless hordes of bad guys, guns that go “thwonk”... If this movie isn't perfect, it is definitely perfect-adjacent. Along the way the discussion covers the new breed of action directors who started as stuntmen, enemies becoming allies, friends becoming enemies, and references to the “Goonies from hell” which is just as current a reference as you thought. In honor of the single shot action scene in Extraction, Greg and Joe also recorded this episode in a single take. You're welcome. As always important questions are answered, drinking games created, and the back of the box is, um... Boxed, I guess? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Joe and Greg are not surprised to discover that this movie was made specifically for them. Liam Neeson is a retired CIA agent with a very particular set of skills, including the ability to track down bad guys in minutes, no matter where they are on the planet. An incredible actor + relentless action + over-the-top absurdity = a classic Great Bad Movie. It's basically a fast food meal: Greasy, messy, and embarassing. But because of Neeson's talent and its short runtime, it's basically perfect. But do yourself a favor... Don't pause it and try to explain the plot to someone. You will probably lose their respect forever. Also: Drinking Games, Important Questions, Joe's Back of the Box, and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Long Kiss Goodnight is a high point in the mid 90's rough waters. Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Renny Harlin, and Shane Black all find amazing ways to shine, while also subverting Hollywood's tropes. They are mostly successful. Listen, is there a helicopter out of nowhere? YES. Does it cut to the White House out of nowhere? YES. Does it make literal sense throughout? No. But 2 out of 3 isn't bad. Also: Drinking Games, "Signs you might be a Great Bad movie if...", Important Questions, Joe's Back of the Box, and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Have you ever wished a sequel to Mission:Impossible could also be a sequel to Face/Off? Well... We have some really good news for you. Just because this is the worst movie in the Mission:Impossible series, it's still incredible. If this is rock bottom, this franchise might have the highest floor in history. To celebrate M:I-2's 24th anniversary (almost to the day!), Greg and Joe discover the secret to fully enjoying this movie (it might involve skipping the first half,) sneak in some Brian De Palma talk, and figure out the definitive ways to fix this (already amazing) movie. Also: Drinking Games, Important Questions, Joe's Back of the Box, and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Christopher Walken says "a man can be an artist, in anything: Food, whatever... It depends on how good he is at it." Well... Tony Scott's art is making movies 47 times better than they should be. He's about to paint his masterpiece. It's a simple equation: Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, and Christopher Walken in a Tony Scott film. Without those 4 things, this movie would be a mess. Instead, it's a magical confluence of style and performance. So much so, that Greg might offically changes his ridiculous stance on Tony Scott. In this episode, Greg and Joe debate Tony Scott's batting average vs. Ridley Scott's, agree to watch all of Tony Scott's collaborations with Denzel Washington, and most importantly they learn what a "BHB" is. Also: Drinking Games, Important Questions, Joe's Back of the Box, and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Greg and Joe discuss the movie that launched a global phenomenon, even though it's the fourth in the series. The original gang is back together, and the stakes could not be higher? Let's just say yes and move on. Our hosts find themselves at a crossroads with this franchise: Will Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Jordana Brewster find the right lane, or will they be left in the dust? It's time for the conversation that needed to happen. Also: Drinking Games, Important Questions, Joe's Back of the Box, and more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Greg and Joe go back to where their love of great bad movies began, 1993's Cliffhanger, starring Sylvester Stallone.
