Garrett McNamara is a world record-breaking big wave surfer and one of the pioneers of sport. What's crazy about Garrett's story is that while he achieved pro surfer status early on, his career didn't take off until his mid to late 30's when he became infatuated with riding giant waves. And then it exploded to the point where now, at 55, he's launching his 3rd Season of  his “100 Foot Wave” series with HBO. On the podcast, we talk about growing up in cults, Hawaii, being there for the beginning of tow-in surfing, being big in Japan, Northshore (the movie) his HBO series, and much more. It's another interesting one with a legend. Arlie Hochschild, a sociologist from Berkely, has spent a chunk of the last decade in ruby red areas of the United States. During that time she's written two books: Strangers In Their Own Land (which was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2016) and now, Stolen Pride. Arlie interviewed dozens of people from Pike County, Kentucky–the whitest and second poorest district in the country–to better understand what's happening in the rust belt and why those voters are so drawn to Donald Trump. In her view, it's not just about the economy, trans rights, or climate change, but about loss, shame, and ultimately pride. Arlie invites us to open our minds and ears so we can learn about one another and begin to come together.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Contradictions of Indigenous Peoples Day

The idea of Indigenous Peoples Day originated in 1977, in Geneva, at the first International NGO Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the America. The conference was attended by Indigenous peoples throughout world and by the conclusion of the conference, a list of recommendations was drafted, outlining a course of action to support Indigenous peoples right to self-determination, a formal rebuttal was declared to Doctrine of Discovery or Dominion, and Indigenous peoples stated their intention “to observe October 12, the day of so-called ‘discovery' of America, as an International Day of Solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.” Thereafter in the United States, cities and states started observing Indigenous Peoples Day including for example, in 1989 South Dakota adopted Native American Day; on 10/22/91, the Berkely, CA city council adopts Indigenous Peoples Day. In the City of Los Angeles, CA, the city council declared the second Monday of October Indigenous Peoples Day and in 2019, CA Governor Gavin Newsom declared Indigenous Peoples' Day a California holiday. To date, it is estimated that a little over 150 cities celebrate or observe Indigenous Peoples Day out of 19,502 incorporated cities, towns, and villages in the United States. Presumably, in cities with large or semi-large Native American/Indigenous communities. At the state level, 28 states observe Indigenous Peoples Day, but only three states, Maine, Nebraska, and New Mexico deem it a state holiday. The Washington DC district also considers it a holiday. At the federal level, in October 2021, President Biden designated the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day and The Indigenous Peoples' Day Act (SB 2970) which if passed would replace Columbus Day as a federal holiday and designate the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples' Day was introduced in Congress in 2021 and reintroduced in Congress in 2023 with no traction since then. As of 2024, for the few cities and states that observe Indigenous Peoples Day with celebrations, they still acknowledge Columbus Day as the default, often, paid holiday. There are many contradictions to celebrating and participating in Indigenous People Day celebrations at the city and state levels and today on American Indian Airwaves we have a round-table discussion on what is Indigenous Peoples Day? Our discussion panel includes Fidel Rodriguez of Chumash Nation and host of the former KPFK Divine Forces Radio and Marcus Lopez, of Barberieno band of the Chumash Nation and executive producer and host American Indian Airwaves, and me. Calling For A Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program in BC

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - In 2008, the city of Berkely had a problem. They wanted to hasten the adoption of solar technology, but the $20,000 to $30,000 bill was too steep for a lot of homeowners. Cisco DeVries, the Mayor's Chief of Staff, came up with what Scientific American would later call one of the top 20 “world-changing” ideas of the year. The capital would come from private investors, but homeowners could finance energy upgrades through their property taxes. Since then, Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs have provided more than $13 billion for solar installations and energy saving improvements for homes and businesses in the United States. Cortes Island resident Brian Scott would like to see PACE made available to British Columbians.    “I represent two things, an idea and an organization. The idea is the PACE financing tool, which will not be ‘the magic bullet' but is very close when it comes to our need to address climate change quickly.  PACE specifically addresses the fact that roughly a third of our greenhouse gas emissions come from residential and commercial buildings. I'm representing the concept and promoting it. I also represent PACE Alberta and PACE Canada,” he explained.  “The key that makes PACE work is that the homeowner isn't borrowing the funds. Their house is borrowing the funds effectively. It doesn't impact their credit rating.  It shouldn't even impact their mortgage because essentially it's just like a  local improvement charge. The bottom line is when you borrow PACE money to upgrade your house, that borrowing effectively flows through the taxation authority and you repay the borrowing through your taxes.” “PACE unlocks our motivation right across the board, whether it's personal, whether it's private, whether it's government, et cetera. It removes the barriers and it makes it easy to become a sustainable champion and to take action. The proof is that in the US: where those measures have been properly implemented, PACE is growing exponentially. In Canada,  it's a turtle. That's really the bottom line.”

Poucas pessoas tinham acesso a ele. Nenhuma foto. Pouco se sabia de Adelaide. Setembro de 74. - Ele topa? - Quem, o Julinho? As informações jorravam. Infelizmente morreu. Vítima da ditadura que o criou. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pecasraras/message

Scott has put all of his fishing time the last few years into understanding how to best utilize forward facing sonar to find and catch giant walleyes. It has been working and Scott shares with us in this interview some crucial details how FFS revealed the winning fish where other electronics weren't showing any signs of life. Hi Everyone, We're a little late with this episode and it's all my fault! As I mentioned in my May 1st blog post (sign up here for updates), for the first time in four years, I conducted an amazing interview with Sheila Kohler and forgot to hit record on Zoom. Sheila--the most gracious person on Earth--forgave me for wasting 45 minutes of her time and agreed to re-record the episode. Thank you to Sheila for sitting down with me twice! After I recovered from the shame, I realized this might be a great boon for readers. I loved Cracks—the short story, the novel, and the movie! You will find links to all three below. It was fascinating to talk about Sheila's adaptation from short story to novel and to hear about the making of the movie and the decision to set the movie in England rather than South Africa. I hope you have had time to read the short story and the novel. What did you think of the movie? Let me know if you have any follow-up questions or comments. I would love to hear. Here are the links: Content Warning: Sexual Assault Cracks, the short story, by Sheila Kohler Cracks, The Novel by Sheila Kohler, available at Bookshop and Amazon. Cracks, The Movie In other news... I am taking a sabbatical from the podcast this summer to rest, regroup, and figure out what direction to take this show in in the future. I love doing it, but every now and then, I think it's a good idea to reevaluate and hone in on what has been valuable and what parts need to go. My first guest in the fall is Tim Tomlinson. Although I will be talking to him about one of his short stories, he has a new book coming out this month. It looks terrific! Check out kellyfordon.com for a picture of the cover and publication information from Nirala. Cheers! Kelly Sheila Kohler Bio: Sheila Kohler was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the younger of two girls. In this episode, we explore the Berkeley entrepreneurship ecosystem, the need for a venture fund dedicated to Berkeley Entrepreneurs, the formation of Courtyard Ventures Fund 2, and many other things.  On Courtyard Ventures:"Courtyard is a fund run by MBAs and Berkeley students to invest in startups from Berkeley. The genesis of that is that students are very close to companies. We are in the ecosystem. We are able to meet with people and also know Berkeley itself… It's not just MBA, the undergraduate level, Ph.D. level there are amazing companies coming out of Berkeley" On the entrepreneurial spirit in Berkeley:"Berkeley is a hotbed of innovation. You can tell just by walking around the Berkeley campus, it's a huge amount of entrepreneurship and general people trying to do different things. If you just look at the kinds of developments happening in this area of the world, like nuclear fusion or other things … It highlights that there's just a huge amount of stuff happening here."  On the need for a dedicated venture fund for Berkeley:"I read a report by a Stanford professor on the number of unicorns created by Haas MBAs. I think we've got 1.4 in a thousand vs Harvard's 1.6. Berkeley as a public school is relatively siloed, the budget of Berkely per student is $65000 per year vs $235000 at Harvard and $400000 at Stanford. So as students in this ecosystem, we can really play a role to create a lubricant and help generate and push the startups forward."Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/here-at-haas/donations

In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg talks with Annie Kritcher, the physicist who designed the successful experiment that recreated the energy source of the sun.She explained: “What we're doing here is essentially creating a miniature star in a lab about the size of a human hair to half the size of the human hair. We have 192 giant lasers and when we say giant, that means that the whole system that is used to create this laser energy and all the details associated with it, it's the size of three football fields when you put all of the 192 laser beams together.”  Fusion research has been going on for decades, but the December experiment is a significant breakthrough and represents a new approach. “The thing that's different this time is that for the first time we've actually demonstrated in the laboratory that we can achieve fusion energy gain in a controlled way. Before that, we've never actually generated fusion energy output that was controlled in a laboratory setting. This result motivates and is a proof of principal for all the different approaches out there,” said Kritcher. That increases the likelihood of success.“There's also a huge resurgence in the number of people working in this area and the different approaches that are being looked at and when you have that many people looking at a problem, the progress is highly accelerated.”Dr. Annie Kritcher is the design lead within the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) team as part of the National Ignition Facility at LLNL. Dr. Kritcher started at LLNL as a summer intern in 2004. She earned a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Plasma Physics and a MS Nuclear Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Annie earned her BS in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan.

Malia Berkely currently plays for the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL. After being doubted as a player in her youth, she earned a place in the US youth national team camp from u-15 to u-23. At Florida State University she became the one of the most decorated players in the university's history earning ACC Defensive Player of the year in 2019 & 2020, leading the team to three ACC Championship titles and an NCAA Championship title. Wanting to play in Europe like some of her early idols, she signed her first professional contact in France for Bordeaux in the top division, even appearing under Champions League lights. We talk about returning after ACL surgery, minor setbacks for major comebacks, celebrating the little victories, overcoming rough beginnings in college and in France, proving people wrong and herself right, incremental gains, continual growth and the way back to the USWNT. Anthony Boucher Anthony Boucher known as was the pen name of William Anthony Parker White and he was known at Tony. He was born in 1911 in Oakland California and died aged only 56 in Oakland of lung cancer. I guess he liked it there.   He graduated from Pasadena High in 1928 and went to the University of Southern California and did his masters at University of California, Berkely. Boucher is to rhyme with Voucher rather than the French bouche.  Boucher was close to his grandfather who had been a steel worker in Glasgow and got free passage to America after signing up to fight in the Civil War. He couldn't have afforded the passage otherwise. It's said that the grandfather who made a big impression on Boucher was a rake and a rogue.  He was a sickly child with asthma and other illnesses and this made him a voracious reader and later writer.  Boucher was a professional writer of fiction who wrote mystery novels, short stories, science fiction and radio dramas. His story Nine Times Nine was voted the best locked room master of all time. He edited anthologies of science fiction and was a translator from Spanish, being the first to translate Jorge Luis Borges (I must do one of his stories).  Boucher founded the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and edited it from 1949 to 1958.  He was a friend and mentor of Philip K. Dick. In addition to other things he was a keen poker player, a sports fan and a big fan of Sherlock Holmes. He collected records of early operatic singers. Apparently he was a friend of the occultist Jack Parsons who also lived in Pasadena His first story was published in 1927 in Weird Tales when he was 15. It was entitled “Ye Good Olde Ghost Storie”.  They Bite This story was suggested by many many people. I watched a couple of videos on how to do Western accents, but I think I have not succeeded very well and hope that doesn't detract from the story. This is a classic folk horror story albeit set in the American West, though it references Sweeny Bean a Gaelic cannibal from Galloway.  Boucher's grandfather was from Scotland. The story is similar to Samantha Hick's story: Back Along The Old Track, though I don't think Sam's story was consciously modelled on this. The similarity is in the trope. Also similar is Lovecraft's Dreams In The Witch House.  It isn't clear to me why Tallant is climbing the rocks all day or has come here at all. He makes notes of what he sees of the glider training school. Perhaps he is going to sell what he sees to the highest bidder – some sort of freelance spy. Some of the characters I don't get. The old man who warns Tallant and whose dog is killed by the Carker. The young man with the beard who is a stranger, the Flight Sergeant on the pinball machine and the construction worker being fleeced at poker. I don't get those, apart from Boucher's real life love of poker. He only needs one Warner and the bartender really.  He is planning blackmail but I don't get how the Carker story will help that.  I wasn't surprised when he killed Morgan. I think the dream of him being a superman king narcissist type let me know he was not a bloody good bloke. But it is Morgan's murder that leads to Tallant's doom. It is his fiendish plan to attribute Morgan's death the the Carkers that leads him inside their tumble down adobe.     It has an unreliable narrator. Remember Boucher was a mystery writer and the unreliable narrator became a staple after Agatha Christie. There is no hint that Tallant is a blackmailer. In a sense he is like the Crakers who have come to Oasis opportunistically in search of prey — as has Morgan, a fellow blackmailer. There is a hint to Tallant's shady past at the beginning, but no detail given so that when the twist comes it is satisfying. The end is a moral tale of the biter bit. We like stories that reinforces our ideas of good and bad and that bad needs go punished. The things themselves...
