Any other business HPR Updates There has been a lot of activity this month on the Gitea repos with rho`n catching up on outstanding bugs. We also had a lot of changes due to the ongoing Internet Archive outage that is still impacting us. A quick fix was to host the 10 day feed directly from the HPR server, but since then we have made all the media available on the HPR Community Content Delivery Network. We will have three sources but if you meet the requirements for hosting, and wish to help out please get in touch. 24/7 Home Service Fixed IP address Unlimited bandwidth Fast > 500mb/sec upload Large > 1T of storage Permission from your ISP to run a web server Contact information known to the Janitors Optional: UPS We added a html link to the comments page to provide direct feedback from any app that supports it. Eg: gPodder opens Firefox at the comment form. We have consolidated a lot of repositories on Gitea, removing some and moving others. https://repo.anhonesthost.net/HPR Documentation is now available and includes: Community Content Delivery Network (CCDN) A location to track the deployment of the HPR Community Content Delivery Network, that provides a mirror network for our content. HPR Website Design This is literally in the whiteboard phase of the HPR website redesign. Podcatcher and Podcasting Platform Compatibility Where we can track Compatibility of the clients subscribed to our feeds. Useful Resources Where we can link to other free culture sites that provide useful services. Requested Topics Where we can track topics that have been requested, and link to shows that addressed them. Workflow issues. Message from Dave Morriss I am planning to "retire" from the Hacker Public Radio Janitorial Team. I have been helping to administer HPR for over 12 years now. I first offered help to Ken in 2012 in response to an appeal he made. We met at OggCamp in that year, and I joined the Community News recording for episode 1066 in September 2012. My first show was 1091 in October that year. I will turn 75 in December 2024, and am finding that I don't have the energy to do as much as I could when I first joined. I also want to be able to devote more time to the various personal projects I have. I plan to consolidate all my scripts on the HPR Gitea repositories, and document all the processes I have been looking after. I want to have completed the handover by the end of March 2025. I will continue as an HPR host for as long as I can after that. I have had a wonderful 12 years as an HPR Janitor and will always look back on it with great pleasure. Details will be made available on the website soon, but if you want to join in, the official times will be: Start at: Sunday 2023-12-31 10:00 +0000 End at: Monday 2024-01-01 12:00 +0000 Static Site In November we finally seem to have perfected the algorithm for computing the days to the next free slot! The index page contains the result of this, used in the sentence: If you record your show now it could be released in X days. It initially proved to be difficult to achieve this using a combination of database and template computations. The lessons have been learnt (hopefully).

A server has been set up on Amazon AWS, and we are currently setting up a copy of the database, mail system and Mailman mailing list service. The Gitea Git repository has already been moved and is in use. The static site created by rho`n is being set up to provide the main HPR website. Work is being done to provide the interactive facilities that need the database, such as show and comment submission. Contacting old hosts The rate of show submission is unusually low this year. The number of active contributors is low too, with a small group of hosts keeping the HPR project from sinking below the waves. A question for the HPR Community - can we contact old hosts to ask them to contribute again? Conversion of Windows-1252 characters to UTF-8 Unicode As mentioned on the last Community News the Windows-1252 characters (aka Latin1) in the database were converted to the UTF-8 Unicode format apparently without exceptions. If anyone finds any unexpected characters in episode titles, summaries, tags or notes from now onwards please let us know and we'll fix them too!

Any other business Error feedback from show notes Most of the shows we process require us to make some level of modifications to get them posted. This ranges from fixing tags to a complete rewrite of the shownotes, or verifying whether intros were actually added or not. Each modification that we make means that it requires more human intervention and prevents us from being able to completely automate the upload process. In addition there is a non trivial amount of time needed to "fix" these issues. This can range from a few minutes to an hour or more per show, and with 260 shows a year this mounts up. We normally don't contact hosts about these issues as it is usually quicker to fix the issues than composing emails, and waiting for the reply that may never come. For the most part our experience has been that hosts are more than willing to fix these issues if they are aware of them. As part of the ongoing steps toward automation, would hosts be open to the idea of getting a processing report once we have posted the show? This would list all the issues the test tools found and the steps that we needed to take to rectify them. Making changes to shows after upload Sometimes an error or omission in notes for an HPR episode isn't noticed until the show is posted to the site. In recent times a few hosts have sent in their changes by way of comments. This is not ideal: There's a limit on how much text a comment can hold The comment form has a nasty habit of stripping backslashes, so code corrections can be messed up We don't put comments on the show's page on archive.org, so such corrections will not be seen by people reading the notes there The HPR admins would prefer changes to be sent in the form of emails to admin at hackerpublicradio.org. They will then be applied to the show notes and the archive.org version updated in step. Tags and Summaries Thanks to the following contributor for sending in updates in the past month: Windigo Over the period tags and/or summaries have been added to 10 shows which were without them. If you would like to contribute to the tag/summary project visit the summary page at https://hackerpublicradio.org/report_missing_tags.php and follow the instructions there.

"Life of Pi" is the life of humankind. The mathematical constant represents men's attempt to understand the world through logic and reason, but the number itself is irrational and infinite – an apt symbol of human spirituality. About a decade ago, French Canadian writer Yann Martel impressed the world with this remarkable insight, yet it was only 10 years later that his powerful text has been translated into a spectacular format by an equally sensitive, spiritual and talented film director none other than Ang Lee. "Life of Pi" is a fantasy adventure story. Indian boy Pi Patel worships three religions, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, although his contemporary-minded father would rather he believe in science. On a freighter across the Pacific Ocean to Canada, Pi loses his family and the entire crew in a storm and is the only human survivor on a lifeboat along with an injured zebra, a mother orangutan, a spotted hyena and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Before long, the number of survivors is reduced to only Pi and Richard Parker. The boy and the tiger drift on the vastness of the Pacific for 227 days before reaching the point of rescue. According to Pi, it is his fear of the beast that has kept him alive. However, it isn't until almost the end the movie when the story takes a sharp turn and another version of the plot is served, perhaps a more authentic account of such an incredible survival tale. The new narrative removes, or shall we say explains, all the fantastic images of the last 60 minutes and produces a darker interpretation of humanity. The gloomy realization lasts only briefly before it is shoved under the carpet of Ang Lee's positive worldview. The boy embarked on his journey with an open mind for spiritual enlightenment, but while sailing on the vast and precarious ocean of life's uncertainties, he was forced to coexist with an animal. Yet in the end, he is able to tame the beast and find salvation, both physically and spiritually. Despite the constant reference to religion, "'Life of Pi" tells one rather simple story. It is exactly such simplicity that poses a challenge for moviemakers hoping to adapt it. Well, of course, there is also the difficulty of keeping a tiger and an actor safely in the coziness of a lifeboat. That's why it took Fox 10 years to find the right person, while in the meantime wait for CGI technology to mature. Taiwan-born director Ang Lee, with his patience and interest in human spirituality, unfettered imagination and quick mastery of 3-D filming techniques, proved to be the perfect candidate. Special attention must be given to lead actor Suraj Sharma who was able to release the full charge of his emotions into a vacuum, and to cinematographer Claudio Miranda who transformed the imaginations of Yann Martel and Ang Lee into a dazzling spectacle. "Life of Pi" is a perfect combination of commercial ambition and spiritual aspiration. On a scale from one to ten, I think it deserves an 8. 电影是一种生活状态 by EZFM来明 on China Drive, CRI EZFM Also on 荔枝FM:没节操有情操英语影评 微信公众号:China Drive双语中国秀
