In Portland, parents filed a lawsuit against the Portland Association of Teachers for over $100 million, citing a November 2023 strike that led to nearly a month of school closures for 44,000 students. The suit claims the strike was illegal under Oregon law, which limits strikes to mandatory bargaining subjects. Parents allege severe disruptions to their children's education and well-being, seeking compensation and legal measures to prevent future occurrences. The lawsuit was initiated by attorneys Patrick Hughes and Daniel Suhr, known for their significant legal battles in Supreme Court cases. The complaint can be viewed here. For GLSEN's 2024 Day of Silence, the theme is "Rise Up, Take Action," encouraging students to actively fight censorship and discrimination rather than remaining silent. Directed by Brendan Patrick Hughes, THE METAL DETECTOR follows Georg, an Austrian retiree who hunts for history amidst the hill surrounding his home. As a child, his mother claims to have witnessed a crash of an Allied B-17 during the Second World War and Georg spends his days with his simple metal detector, searching for fragments of a bygone era. As he researches the American crewmembers onboard, he reaches out to their descendants and invites them to his home to remember the 75th anniversary of the crash. However, digging up the past involves more than assembling artifacts and, suddenly, the families begin to unpack the challenges they faced within their own home as result of the war. In this 1on1, we speak to Hughes about digging up the past and the effects of trauma on 'normal people'.

A new report - released today - by the National Opportunity Project shows hundreds of millions of dollars in federal Covid relief intended for disadvantaged students has failed to reach them. The first-of-its-kind report, which relied on public records requests, research, and direct communication with state education officials in all 50 states, found that at least $736 million across 27 states has been or is at risk of being diverted away from the country's youngest and most at-risk students. In many cases, these funds are instead being used by governors on pet projects having little to do with education. Here are just a few examples of where these K-12 funds are being spent (for a comprehensive list, click here): Alaska gave $1.2 million toward a program that uses the video game Minecraft to teach coding.Oregon gave $1.6 million to “Moonshot for Equity,” a multi-year initiative aimed at “eliminating equity barriers” in several state colleges.West Virginia used $600,000 for awards to 12 public schools that won a statewide “I Got Vaxxed!” competition. Patrick Hughes, president and founder of the National Opportunity Project: “The fact that we found at least $736 million in federal funding that has not reached our K-12 schools is alarming. It should not be used by governors for grants on special projects when young and low-income students are months or even years behind in learning. We are working to get the remaining federal funding to the independent, private, and religious school students Congress intended to reach.”
Patrick Hughes— President & Founder of the National Opportunity Project—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the release of a report which shows that disadvantaged students didn't receive $736 million in federal COVID-19 aid that had been earmarked for them by Congress. You can read more about the report here: https://www.nationalopportunity.org/eans-report/

Branded entrainment has been defined as the insertion of a brand within an entertainment property in such a way that the line between entertainment and advertising becomes blurred. It's a lot easier said than done, but Joe's guest this week has discovered the secret sauce. His name is Patrick Hughes, the CEO of Foundation Media and his company's work with Build-A-Bear, Sony, Netflix, and others has provided a model for success in how brands can interact with the entertainment industry.
It is not always clear what the future holds. Plans are laid down and ideas cultivated but life often has a way of reshaping those plans. This is the third episode of our four part series, in partnership with Tarasis Enterprises, Supporting Female Entrepreneurs. In 2019, Benburb-based beautician Sinead O'Donnell was hard at work laying the foundations for her own brand of self-tanning products. Then, in 2020 with the onset of the Covid Pandemic her world was suddenly upended with the untimely and tragic passing of her beloved father, Patrick Hughes. Despite her incredible heartache, Sinead was acutely aware that her dad would not have wanted her to put paid to her new venture. So, with his devotion to her in mind, she decided to dedicate her line to his memory and thus PH20 Tanning was born. Two years on, Sinead has continued to develop her line. PH20 is currently being stocked by over 5o retailers, secured by none-other than Sinead herself, and is set to launch a new and exciting product in the very near future. With her sunny disposition, radiantly positive outlook on life and her quiet grit and determination it is patently clear that this female entrepreneur has a glowing future in business ahead of her.

The Man from Toronto is a 2022 American action comedy film directed by Patrick Hughes. It stars Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, along with Kaley Cuoco, Jasmine Mathews, Lela Loren, Pierson Fodé, Jencarlos Canela, and Ellen Barkin in supporting roles. The Man from Toronto was released on June 24, 2022 by NetflixEddy (Hart) is a failed internet athletic instructor attempted to sell his idea of non-contact boxing to local gym owner Marty (Roach), but Marty rejects the idea on the basis that it's nonsensical and Teddy's failure to do something as simple as design a marketing brochure proves he's incompetent.Wanting to do something for his wife Lori's (Mathews) birthday, he takes her away to a day spa where he has arranged for a luxurious two hour pampering session. Meanwhile Teddy goes off to a secluded cabin to prepare for the rest of her surprise, however the printer he used to print directions had low toner and the number on the cabin's address was too faded for him to see clearly. Teddy unknowingly arrives at the wrong location where two men are inside with a third man awaiting the arrival of The Man From Toronto (Harrelson), a mysterious assassin with a talent for brutal interrogation. Having never met the Man From Toronto, the men mistake Teddy for him and proceed to encourage his interrogation of the man they have in captivity. Despite his fear and cluelessness, Teddy manages to extract the information they're looking for out of the man, shortly after which the FBI raid the cabin.Explaining the situation to Teddy, Agents Lawrence (Drummond) and Davis (Rowe) convince him to assume the identity of the Man from Toronto due to the time sensitive nature of an operation they have underway to catch exiled Venezuelan Colonel Marin (Hoyos) in Washington, DC before he follows through with a plan to assassinate the President of Venezuela at the new Venezuelan embassy. While Teddy's helping the FBI they assign Agent Santoro (Canela) to protect Lori and act as a butler to guide her on a day of shopping and fun with her friend Anne (Cuoco). Much to Teddy's jealousy.Teddy is sent to meet the Colonel's wife Daniela (Loren) as The Man from Toronto. She tells him that they've succeeded with “phase one” of their plan, so he must go to Puerto Rico for “phase two.” En route to Puerto Rico, Teddy and four of Marin's men are ambushed by The Man From Toronto, who's real name is Randy, on the plane, who kills everyone but Teddy and crash lands the plane and on a rural part of the island. The duo proceeds to San Juan where a technology conference is underway. After speaking with his Handler (Barkin), Randy decides to continue with the ruse that Teddy is him, and outfits him in a suit and collection of knives since that is Randy's chosen method of interrogation.Arriving at the location of the tech conference, Teddy meets with a man who informs him he has four men hostage and is trying to determine which one is “Green.” Randy guides Teddy through most of the process until Teddy inadvertently slices one of the hostages cheek and the blood induces Teddy to vomit all over him and another man, the second of whom admits he's Green. Randy arrives and kills everyone in the room except Teddy and Green, who explains that he and the man Teddy extracted information from in the cabin had designed a weapon that Colonel Marin wants, but it has a dual failsafe: the former man's voice, and Green's thumbprint. Randy cuts Green's thumb off and presumably kills him, only for him and Teddy to be confronted by another asset known as The Man From Miami (Fode). He tries to steal the thumb from them and a shootout ensues, though they manage to keep the thumb. They return to the United States where they meet Lori and Anne for dinner. Randy reveals that as a loner he's very uncomfortable around women and is nervous that Anne is joining them. Anne manages to break through his exterior and the two dance briefly before the Man From Miami arrives and chases Randy and Teddy to an upstairs storage room at the restaurant. The three fight, ending with Teddy accidentally shooting Randy in the leg and The Man From Miami making off with the thumb. This confirming Randy's suspicions that the Handler had sent The Man From Miami. The police and FBI arrive on the scene so Randy and Teddy steal a police car to escape and race to the embassy to try and prevent the assassination. Arriving in time, Teddy distracts Colonel Marin and the Handler long enough for the FBI to raid the building and thwart the assassination. However, Randy escapes with the money that was owed by the Colonel.Teddy arrives to an empty home, Lori having left out of disappointment to catch a train and stay with her mother. Teddy rushes to stop her from leaving, but is ambushed by The Man From Miami, who almost succeeds in killing him until Randy intervenes. However, several more assassins show up and Randy and Teddy are forced to fight them off. As they finish off the last of them the Handler herself arrives and attempts to kill them both to get her money back. She pursues them into a warehouse where Teddy accidentally activates a trap door that drops her into boiling oil, frying her alive, and the warehouse explodes from a gas leak ejecting Randy and Teddy into the parking lot.Thinking Randy had left, Teddy is confronted by one last assassin: the Man From Tokyo, however Randy dispatches him with his prized possession: a 1969 Dodge Charger he named Deborah. He hands the keys to Teddy so he can catch Lori at the station before she boards her train, but warns him not to scratch the car. En route to the station the car stalls on the train tracks so Teddy bails on foot and arrives in time to stop Lori. However, her train arrives and destroys Deborah, sending the $2 million in cash that Randy stashed in the trunk flying everywhere.A year later, Teddy, Lori, and Anne are dining at Randy's new restaurant, something Randy had confessed was a dream of his for a long time but he hadn't opened one because he was afraid nobody would come. The three quietly admit they don't like the food but decide to support Randy anyway until the overpriced bill comes, which Randy offers to cover. Teddy then takes Randy aside and lets him know he's made Randy a partner in his new line of gyms, and hands him a small downpayment to cover the cost of losing Deborah, though Randy demands full repayment and starts to choke Teddy for not fixing what he did.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Patrick Hughes is the co-founder of Patriots Law Group, a law firm he started with his friend and former active duty Air Force JAG colleague, Michael Lyons. Pat served nearly seven years on active duty, and then transferred to the Reserve as he formed Patriots Law Group in 2017. He started as a prosecutor and his next assignment was as a defense counsel, where he was ranked the #1 of 84 area defense counsel globally. In his final assignment on active duty, he shifted his focus to civil litigation, and defended the Air Force in federal courts pertaining to matters involving, among other things, military pay disputes. There, he represented the Air Force in lawsuits brought by servicemembers involving claims where the military had unlawfully denied entitlements. Many of these cases involved claims of six or seven figure money demands and multiple class-action lawsuits. These cases were usually filed after a servicemember sought relief through the Board for Corrections of Military Records but was denied. Pat also defended the Air Force against federal civilian employees who brought discrimination claims before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and when challenging their adverse personnel actions before the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB). In his private practice, Pat now represents servicemembers, primarily in the civil realm, including administrative claims brought in the boards for corrections of each military department, claims for military pay brought in the Court of Federal Claims or claims taken up in Federal District Courts. https://www.patriotslawgroup.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ferah-ozbek/message

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are engaged in a knock ‘em out, shoot ‘em up, love ‘em all day long hitman double feature with the Patrick Hughes movies from 2017 and 2021 respectively, The Hitman's Bodyguard and Hitman's Bodyguard's Wife. I have a question for the universe: did Ryan Reynolds do something to director Patrick Hughes? Did he steal some of that man's money? Insult his dog? Hit on his wife? Pee on his front lawn? Did he do something terrible to this man, for which he's now being punished? Because he sure gets beat the hell up throughout both of these films, and to the point where a person can start to wonder things about Reynolds's character. There's only so much a human body can take. I think we're all witnessing that here. It's either that or Patrick Hughes is some kind of sick sadist and we're all witnessing him get his kicks with these films. You earn enough pull in Hollywood and they'll pretty much let you do anything. Money is a powerful motivator, you know. I don't mean to disparage anybody or their personal lives, but these questions need to be asked. We have the health of one of this world's greatest living Canadian actors on the line here, people! I just don't know if his body will be able to make it through a third installment of the “Let's See How Much a Person Can Take before Their Heart Stops” series of films! But anyway, here is our chat about these two films. We had very divisive views on these things. I'm going to donate to the Save Ryan Reynolds charity now.
