Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Max Tegmark's new Time article on how we're in a Don't Look Up scenario [Linkpost], published by Jonas Hallgren on April 25, 2023 on LessWrong. Max Tegmark has posted a Time article on AI Safety and how we're in a "Don't Look Up" scenario. In a similar manner to Yudkowsky, Max went on Lex Fridman and has now posted a Time article on AI Safety. (I propose we get some more people into this pipeline) Max, however, portrays a more palatable view regarding societal standards. With his reference to Don't Look Up, I think this makes it one of my favourite pieces to send to people new to AI Risk, as I think it describes everything that your average joe needs to know quite well. (An asteroid with a 10% risk of killing humanity is bad) In terms of general memetics, it will be a lot harder for someone like LeCun to come up with a genius equivalence between asteroid safety and airplane safety with this framing. (Which might be a shame since it's one of the dumber counter-arguments I've heard.) But who knows? He might just claim that scientists know and have always known how to use nuclear bombs to shoot the asteroid away or something. What I wanted to say with the above is that I think Max is doing a great way of framing the problem, and with his respect from his earlier career as a physicist, I think it would be good to use his articles more in public discussions. I also did quite enjoy how he described alignment on the Lex Fridman podcast, and even though I don't agree with all he says, it's good enough. Thanks for listening. T., Kankate, V., Anderson, E., Pasinelli, P., Pandey, U. B., Eischen, C. M., Trotti, D. Abstract: The ALS/FTD-linked intronic hexanucleotide repeat expansion in the C9orf72 gene is translated into dipeptide repeat proteins, among which poly-proline-arginine (PR) displays the most aggressive neurotoxicity in-vitro and in-vivo. PR partitions to the nucleus when expressed in neurons and other cell types. Using drosophila and primary rat cortical neurons as model systems, we show that by lessening the nuclear accumulation of PR, we can drastically reduce its neurotoxicity. PR accumulates in the nucleolus, a site of ribosome biogenesis that regulates the cell stress response. We examined the effect of nucleolar PR accumulation and its impact on nucleolar function and determined that PR caused nucleolar stress and increased levels of the transcription factor p53. Downregulating p53 levels, either genetically or by increasing its degradation, also prevented PR-mediated neurotoxic phenotypes both in in-vitro and in-vivo models. We also investigated whether PR could cause the senescence phenotype in neurons but observed none. Instead, we found induction of apoptosis via caspase-3 activation. In summary, we uncovered the central role of nucleolar dysfunction upon PR expression in the context of C9-ALS/FTD. Copy rights belong to original authors. Ben Crump knows what it's like to be in the eye of the storm. As a civil rights attorney representing families in some of the most high-profile cases involving police killings in recent years (including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor), Ben is constantly in the spotlight. But as Nadia Hallgren's (“Becoming”) powerful and incisive documentary portrait “Civil” reveals, it is in the more private moments that Ben really shines, offering the kind of support and genuine concern, in addition to expert legal advice, that these grieving and enraged Black families so desperately need and deserve. Joining Ken on “Top Docs”, Nadia goes beyond the edges of the film frame to offer insights into what makes the extraordinary Ben Crump tick, as well as to share stories about her own creative journey. How did George Floyd's tragic murder drive Nadia's search for a new film and why was this project the perfect answer? What did Nadia learn by seeing Ben with his family that gave her a new perspective on his life and work? And what do Ben's other, not-so-high profile, cases tell us about his ongoing struggle to see that Black people are treated fairly once-and-for-all? Just as Ben seeks justice for his clients, Nadia's camera is there, too, revealing how things are — and showing us how they should be. “Civil” is now available for streaming on Netflix. Follow us on Twitter: @AttorneyCrump @topdocspod The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

As Sweden's ambassador to South Korea from 2018 to 2021, Jakob Hallgren saw firsthand as the pendulum shifted from hope and optimism about the future of inter-Korean relations to pessimism and doubt about whether Seoul and Pyongyang could ever reconcile. This week, Hallgren joins the NK News podcast to discuss his country's role in diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula, Sweden's history in facilitating track 1.5 and 2.0 talks, the Ukraine war and what North Korea stands to gain, and why the dream of Korean unification will go unrealized. Prior to that, he was Sweden's ambassador for disarmament and non-Proliferation, as well as ambassador to the Republic of Korea. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot (@JaccoZed) exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists.

From Emmy-nominated Director Nadia Hallgren and producers Kenya Barris & Roger Ross Williams comes the NETFLIX documentary CIVIL/BEN CRUMP. CIVIL is an intimate vérité look at the life of maverick civil rights attorney Ben Crump and his mission to raise the value of Black life in America. CIVIL follows a year in the life of Crump as takes on the civil cases for the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Black farmers, and "Banking while Black" victims, in doing so challenging America to come to terms with what it owes his clients. Peeling back the many layers of Crump, Hallgren gives a behind-the-scenes look at his upbringing and his balance of work and family life. CIVIL also underscores other countless issues Crump is passionate about including environmental justice and banking while Black. Director / Cinematographer Nadia Hallgren joins us for a conversation on the profoundly significant role that Ben Crump has taken on, symbolically and practically for the African American community. Hallgren's multi-layered approach to storytelling provides the viewer with a window into Mr. Crump's world of rampant state sanctioned carnage, grief counseling and legal triage. To watch go to: netflix.com/CIVIL CIVIL is produced by Kenya Barris, Roger Ross Williams, Lauren Cioffi and Nadia Hallgren and executive produced by Erynn Sampson, Matthew Carnahan and Geoff Martz.

God lytting! ------------ We will stay in Sweden. But this time we focus on Sweden as a tourist destination. Here Per and Henrik get help from the aforementioned guide. The guide gives you tips on what to see in Stockholm as well as his own experiences. In addition, he talks about Öland as a holiday destination and some Swedish history. As promised, you also get a Swede joke in each episode of the series, today's Swede joke is: "Do you know why the Swedes open the milk in the store?". In today's NRK corner, the stage is set for more useless facts. Happy listening!
DEATH is a new digital short in three parts, based on a poem of the same name by the great American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906). Composer Dr. Tyshawn Sorey crafts a breathtaking reflective musical setting, and filmmaker Nadia Hallgren creates a visual story that gives a glimpse into the creative process of both composer and poet, and addresses the Black experience in America. In this Behind the Curtain conversation, Dr. Muriel McClenndon, Associate Professor for History at UCLA, speaks with D. Sorey and Ms. Hallgren, discussing how the project originated, and how its poetry, music and image resonate together. DEATH premiered on February 19, 2021, and can be accessed for free on our website at: LAOpera.org/Death

As the semester draws to a close, Jess wakes up in the middle of the night concerned not with completing her grading, but with measuring inter-rater reliability for coding schemes. Reliability can refer to the agreement among raters, or agreement among items. There's a lot of online discourse right now around reliability, but most of it is focused around the former: agreement among items. Over here in the field of developmental science, we're often coding human behavior through observations, including implementation fidelity. With scales like these, reliability is used to mean several different types of agreement among raters: Training coders to a reliability standard, “in-field” reliability between pairs of raters, “drift check” reliability as you continue to collect data over time, and then overall or average inter-rater reliability for all raters and observations. Only after assessing all of these can you begin to examine reliability designed to assess agreement among items. Papers to read about establishing and measuring inter-rater reliability: Hallgren, K. 419: Arity President Gary Hallgren highlights the three main issues in the transportation industry. Most importantly, driving is extremely inefficient as the average car is used for four percent of the day. Further, 40,000 people die on the roads each year, and driving is extremely expensive, both in time and money. To make a difference in these areas, Arity is working with shared mobility companies, insurance companies, and automobile companies to solve these issues. We also discuss why Gary believes fully autonomous vehicles are further away than many think, how the company mixes the stability, strength, and resources of a Fortune 80 company with the entrepreneurial spirit of a startup, how Arity attracts talent, among other topics.
