Today on the show we have Oscar® and two-time Emmy® Nominee Simon Kinberg. He has established himself as one of Hollywood's most prolific filmmakers, having written and produced projects for some of the most successful franchises in the modern era. His films have earned more than seven billion dollars worldwide. Kinberg graduated from Brown University and received his MFA from Columbia University Film School, where his thesis project was the original script, “Mr and Mrs Smith.” The film was released in 2005, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.Upcoming, Kinberg will premiere his action spy film “The 355”, which will be released theatrically by Universal on January 7, 2022. Directed, co-written and produced by Kinberg, the film was one of the biggest deals out of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and stars an ensemble of A-list actresses including Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong'o, Penelope Cruz, Diane Kruger and Fan Bingbing.A dream team of formidable female stars come together in a hard-driving original approach to the globe-trotting espionage genre in The 355.When a top-secret weapon falls into mercenary hands, wild card CIA agent Mason “Mace” Brown (Oscar®-nominated actress Jessica Chastain) will need to join forces with rival badass German agent Marie (Diane Kruger, In the Fade), former MI6 ally and cutting-edge computer specialist Khadijah (Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong'o), and skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela (Oscar® winner Penélope Cruz) on a lethal, breakneck mission to retrieve it, while also staying one-step ahead of a mysterious woman, Lin Mi Sheng (Bingbing Fan, X-Men: Days of Future Past), who is tracking their every move.As the action rockets around the globe from the cafes of Paris to the markets of Morocco to the opulent auction houses of Shanghai, the quartet of women will forge a tenuous loyalty that could protect the world—or get them killed. The film also stars Édgar Ramirez (The Girl on the Train) and Sebastian Stan (Avengers: Endgame). The 355 is directed by genre-defying filmmaker Simon Kinberg (writer-director-producer of Dark Phoenix, producer of Deadpool and The Martian and writer-producer of the X-Men films). The screenplay is by Theresa Rebeck (NBC's Smash, Trouble) and Kinberg, from a story by Rebeck. The 355, presented by Universal Pictures in association with FilmNation Entertainment, is produced by Chastain and Kelly Carmichael for Chastain's Freckle Films and by Kinberg for his Kinberg Genre Films. The film is executive produced by Richard Hewitt (Bohemian Rhapsody), Esmond Ren (Chinese Zodiac) and Wang Rui Huan. His original series “Invasion” premiered on Apple TV+ on October 22nd. He co-created the show with David Weil, serves as Executive Producer, and wrote or co-wrote 9 of its first 10 episodes. It is considered one of Apple's most ambitious series to date as it was filmed on 4 different continents. The show has already been renewed for a second season, which Kinberg is show running and Executive Producing again. He is also the Executive Producer of the upcoming show “Moonfall” for Amazon. Also upcoming, Kinberg produced the sequel to "Murder on the Orient Express,” “Death on The Nile,” directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Annette Bening and another all-star cast. Needless to say this is one heck of an episode. Hengdian, in Zhejiang province, is booming as the location set for two-thirds of China's period dramas. Synopsis: Every first Friday of the month, The Straits Times chats with ST's global correspondents about life as it goes on, amid the screaming headlines and bubbling crises. They come with stars in their eyes, hoping to become the next Fan Bingbing or Jackson Yee. In Hengdian, they put their names down and hope to be picked - to deliver a line, to stand next to an actor, or even just to be a face in the crowd in one scene. Hengdian is touted as China's Hollywood, and with good reason - it was here that high-budget dramas and films such as Story of Yanxi Palace and Curse of the Golden Flower were shot. But it has gained renewed attention in recent years, as Chinese audiences get hooked on micro-dramas - low-budget productions shot in vertical format to be viewed on smartphones. In this episode, ST's foreign editor Li Xueying chats with correspondent Goh Yan Han on the dreams that Hengdian represents to Chinese youths. It is one of the most famous Chinese period dramas ever, but where are the members of its main cast now? Synopsis: How Did We Get Here is a new scripted series under the #PopVultures banner, where host Jan Lee will deep dive into a celebrity, a band or the cast of a movie or film that made an impact on Asian entertainment and how they got to where they are now. There is a good argument to be made that the most famous Chinese drama ever aired is the Qing dynasty period royal romance My Fair Princess, best known for its first two seasons aired in 1998 and 1999. The story is about a case of mistaken identity. An orphaned street urchin named Xiaoyanzi accidentally becomes a princess in place of her friend, the Qing emperor Qianlong's illegitimate daughter Ziwei. The series broke viewership records, became extremely popular across Asia and was an unprecedented hit that turned its main cast members into household names - Vicki Zhao, Ruby Lin, Alec Su, Zhou Jie, Fan Bingbing and Julian Chen. Now, 26 years since the drama first aired - a lot has happened to the main cast. Two have been effectively cancelled by the Chinese government, one has apparently become a successful farmer, one is widely disliked by Chinese netizens and one quite literally got "burnt". #PopVultures host Jan Lee discusses How Did We Get Here. This week, Vanity Fair contributing editor May Jeong joins Inside the Hive to examine the popular uprising against the Xi Jinping regime over its repressive COVID policies, which have held China's 1.4 billion citizens in virtual captivity. Jeong, who visited China in 2019 to investigate what happened to the country's biggest movie star, Fan Bingbing, sees parallels to recent uprisings in Iran—specifically, women on the front lines. “The intersectional ways in which our struggles are linked is interesting,” she says, “and something that Americans can draw from as well.” Plus, Joe Hagan talks to Emily Jane Fox about her latest feature: a look inside the gilded post–White House life of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who want to live a normal, everyday billionaire's existence in Miami—and have no desire to return to DC should Donald Trump win in 2024. Lady spies + Jessica Chastain = has James written all over it as Nnekay already knew, James would LOVE the new action film The 355! Why didn't this move get any hype? Why are we still dealing with the double standard in hollywood? Is Rotten tomatoes irrelevant now? Can't we just enjoy movies for ourselves? Next up is Yellow Jackets, the Showtime series that's part Lost, part Mean Girls, part Lord of the Flies, and has us hooked! Insecure has ended. We unpack this groundbreaking series and it's ending. For years, Chinese producers only had eyes for the “Hollywood model.” That is, big-budget projects and, hopefully, even bigger returns. After volatile times for the Chinese film industry, and events like the Fan Bingbing tax evasion scandal, producers realized that other business models can exist. To explore how this industry is changing, host Aladin Farré held a remote interview with Cristiano Bortone, who runs Bridging the Dragon. This association has connected European and Chinese filmmakers since 2014, with the support of various Western film funds, production companies, and festivals (such as the FIRST International Film Festival — please see episode 23 of Middle Earth). Middle Earth is produced by China Compass Productions. Summary: In this episode, we dissect two articles featured in the China Influencer Update Newsletter. One is about the Fan Bingbing scandal, and the other is about how influencers calculate their fees. Keije Yi, my assistant, Chinese journalist student, and former intern for famous fashion blogger, Becky Li, joins me on the show today. Keije offers a Chinese perspective of the Fan Bingbing scandal and later shares vital insights about which type of content influences her and her peers the most. How influencer’s price their sponsored posts What brands should know before teaming up with an influencer How large brands develop sponsored content in China Why there is not a sponsored ad process that works every time Original photos vs Brand photos - which performs better The number one detail young Chinese consumers look for in content Why content format needs to vary by product 3 Key Points: Fan Bingbing’s scandal says more about the Chinese people than it does about her. In China, idols are commonly pardoned by their fans. Chinese consumers want the content they are consuming to be authentic and can be very skeptical about what brands produce. Quotes: “Some brands will keep collaborating with her [Fan BingBing] because, despite the scandal, she has real selling power.” –Keije. “There are several factors that affect an influencer’s price. They will also factor in things like your brand's reputation.” –Lauren. “It also depends on what kind of products and what platforms you are choosing. Which one are you? (11:45) If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich? (18:51) Can you own a dance move? (27:54) You’re having lunch with three people you respect and admire. They all start criticizing a close friend of yours, not knowing she is your friend. The criticism is distasteful and unjustified. What do you do? (33:55) Who would win a pay-per-view boxing match: Kanye West and Drake? (36:53) What happened to Fan Bingbing? (42:28) YouTube Rewind: What does YouTube have to do to improve for next year? (48:57) Please send us your questions on Instagram and they may make it onto the next episode!

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are getting spooky in preparation for this Hallow's Eve and watching the new remake "Halloween" which takes place 40 years after the original. It's intended to skip the other sequels and so the guys pitch other new editions that pretend the earlier sequels never existed. They also play another round of America's favorite game, So Shalit Be. Along the way learn all about the imprisonment of Fan Bingbing, Ben's pending litigation, a sad state of affairs for Kurt Russell, and a lot about horror franchises from the 80s and 90s. Available on iTunes. Episode 22 includes: -China releases a popular movie star from house arrest and the DCU welcomes James Gunn to their party. -Producer Jason Blum says there aren't women interested in making horror movies. About that... -"First Man" is mostly boring and "Bad Times at the El Ray" is thrilling. They're both 141 minutes long. Choose wisely. -Nate saw the latest (not) midnight movie from (not) cult filmmaker, Neil Breen. -The new "Halloween" is one half not so great and one half kinda great. It's confusing. -This Week's Pitch -- Sequel Skips! -The guys come up with pitches for new editions of famous sci-fi and horror franchises that forget the earlier sequels. -This Week's Game -- So Shalit Be! -Another episode of new film titles are given the Gene Shalit treatment for pun-heavy reviews and an increasingly depraved sense of Shalit.

While typing this description I realized we forgot this week's segment of Bradley Cooper's A Podcast Segment Is Born starring Lady Gaga, so for that... we apologize. Oops. What we remembered, however, is considerably more interesting. Did you know Tinashe is going to be on Dancing With the Stars this season! We're so excited, but worried she won't find room for the fire truck. Other topics: Fan Bingbing (still ?????). Post Malone (cursed). Zachary Bagans (the guy responsible for cursing him). Richard Gere's decades-long friendship to the Dalai Lama (iconic). Alejandra Silva (pregnant). David Harbour (our new nemesis). Whether or not Nancy Sinatra (Them) knows Mark Burnett (Who).
Welcome to the 63rd installment of the Caixin-Sinica Business Brief, a weekly podcast that brings you the most important business stories of the week from China's top source for business and financial news. Produced by Kaiser Kuo of our Sinica Podcast, it features a business news roundup, plus conversations with Caixin reporters and editors. This week: We note that China's largest ride-hailing platform Didi Chuxing said it will resume late-night ride-hailing service after upgrading its safety measures. We explore the effects of the disappearance of Fan Bingbing, China's biggest female film star, and how the Communist Party of China weighs in on everything from the appropriateness of costumes to the salaries of movie stars. We hear about how the revised tax code has made it easier to levy taxes on foreign employees' offshore income, and what that may mean for China attracting foreign talent. We discuss risk aversion in mainland stocks, as Hong Kong stocks follow their mainland counterparts' fall into bear market territory amid some of the weakest turnover in years. We find out that the operator of Alipay, one of China's two dominant mobile-payment apps, has announced it will spend $150 million over the next three years to speed up the development of “mini apps.” We analyze how China has scrapped several family planning departments, fueling speculation that the country may be on the verge of ending its decades-old restrictions on family size. We dive into a new report from the American Chamber of Commerce in China that says two-thirds of American businesses in the country are feeling a pinch from tit-for-tat protective tariffs in the U.S.-China trade war. We learn that China is investigating a former top lottery official on allegations of corruption — the third misconduct case involving a lottery chief in just over a year. In addition, we talk with Caixin Global reporter David Kirton about petrochemical plants in China. We also chat with Doug Young, managing editor of Caixin Global, about the IPOs of electric car maker Nio in New York, and superapp Meituan-Dianping in Hong Kong. We'd love to hear your feedback on this product. Please send any comments and suggestions to sinica@supchina.com.

Friend of the show, Tall Chris, is back to take a bite out of "The Meg"! And yes, I completely fucked up and mistook Li Bingbing for Fan Bingbing halfway through. No need for internet crucifixion. It's a fun enough summer movie, though it departs radically from the book (some of which is for the best). Also, is Steve Alten another member of the Hollywood Incels Club? We'll talk about it!

Pokora, and, finally, a one-two punch of political news featuring Jameela Jamil and Piper Perabo. Rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! THEN... rewatch Contagion. It's amazing.

Let’s put things simply: today we talk about Lance Bass (again), bean bags (again), Vanessa Kirby, Ari Melber, Alexandra D'Addario (100th time's a charm), Maye Musk, Tracy Chapman, and a very famous actress named who may or may not be missing because of tax evasion. Enjoy! And call 619.WHO.THEM.

This week: We note that China's central bank is set to appoint two new deputy governors in an effort to bring in more expertise to tackle systemic financial risks. We learn that the Hong Kong Stock Exchange is preparing to revise rules to crack down on the practice known as a “reverse takeover,” or “backdoor listing,” as part of efforts to clean up the market, improve the quality of listed companies, and offer better protection to investors. We hear that Medlinker, a Chinese social networking platform for doctors, has become the country's latest unicorn with a new fundraising round that boosts its valuation to more than $1 billion. We find out that Chinese authorities are closing the loopholes that have allowed film and TV stars to minimize their tax payments after a furor over A-lister Fan Bingbing's finances brought shady practices into the limelight. In addition, we talk with David Kirton, reporter for Caixin Global, about Germany's move to block Chinese company Yantai Taihai Group from buying a local producer of specialized machinery tools, which is seen as the latest sign that Berlin is toughening its stance on Chinese investments in strategic and security-related sectors. We also chat with Doug Young, managing editor of Caixin Global, about Google's rumored return to China and the many controversies surrounding it. We'd love to hear your feedback on this product. We note that China plans to impose restrictions on the pay of film and television stars as it grapples with a tax-evasion scandal that has rocked the entertainment industry and ensnared top actress Fan Bingbing 范冰冰. We learn that Huawei is not apologizing for flying Australian lawmakers to visit its Chinese headquarters, after a think tank listed it as the biggest corporate sponsor of overseas travel for the country's national politicians over the last eight years. We hear that shares of Chinese dating app Momo fell by sharply last week after a short seller accused the company of concealing important information from investors. We discuss Shenzhen's OptimumNano Energy, the world's fourth-largest manufacturer of batteries for new-energy vehicles, which told its workers to go on leave for six months as intense competition and high material costs have driven its finances into the red. We discover that China's biggest electric-vehicle carmaker BYD is going to plow $4 billion into quadrupling its car battery output through 2020, despite overcapacity in the industry. We analyze how China's removal of restrictions on foreign investments in gasoline stations will clear the way for global oil giants like BP to operate more wholly owned stations in the country. We find out that Beijing's traffic police are in trouble for allowing the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China to monopolize traffic-fine payments in the capital. In addition, we talk with Tanner Brown, an editor and product director for Caixin Global, about a 19-year-old woman who recently killed herself after being allegedly sexually assaulted by her teacher, and what this case says about suicide in China. In this episode we chat with Jingyi and Annie, two Chinese millennials studying abroad in New York City. On this podcast we often talk about Chinese millennials, their interests, behaviors and consumption habits, so I wanted to actually get some Chinese millennials on the podcast and hear what they had to say. I talk to Jingyi and Annie about their favorite social media platforms, which social media accounts they follow, their opinion on influencers, and whether or not influencers ever have an effect on their purchasing decisions. Some of their answers really surprised me, for example they both cited Redbook (Xiaohongshu) as one of their favorite social media platforms. After listening to what they had to say about the platform I really want to play around with it more! I listed all of the social media accounts they mentioned during the interviews below so you can check them out! Fan Bingbing ranked first on the Forbes list of Chinese celebrities 2015 with an income of 128 million yuan. However, this is not hard for some Chinese Internet celebrities to achieve. How could they manage to make such a big amount of fortune?
更多信息参见今天微信头条~Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has recently promoted her upcoming historical movie Lady of the Dynasty in Beijing. In the movie Lady of the Dynasty, or "Wang Chao De Nv Ren-Yang Guifei" ("王朝的女人-杨贵妃") in Chinese, Fan acts the Tang-dynasty Emperor Xuanzong's beloved concubine, Yang Yuhuan. The entire film centers on the legendary royal romance. The leading actress said, however, it is not her maiden screen role as the famed concubine."I acted Yang Yuhuan in a TV drama series about ten years ago. At that time, I wondered if I would become a film actress. Then I would be able to act as the famed concubine again, and portray the character wholeheartedly. And now I'm really lucky to have my dream come true a decade later."On the other hand, Cheng Shiqing, who used to lead the China region business of Pacific Century Premium Developments, is experiencing his first directorial work.Big names are reported to be involved in the directing team, including Zhang Yimou 张艺谋 and Tian Zhuangzhuang 田壮壮.Hong Kong actor Leon Lai Ming plays Emperor Xuanzong in the historical epic. Shi Qing comments on his performance. "Leon Lai Ming is super in his majestic manner acting as a real emperor in this movie. Meanwhile he also effectively portrays Emperor Xuanzong as a man of good breeding."Another important role in the movie is Yang Yuhuan's first lover Li Mao, who is also the 18th son of Emperor Xuanzong.Bruneian singer-actor Wu Chun (吴尊) plays Li Mao, the Prince of Shou. The director recalls how Wu Chun was working hard for portraying a particular scene."There is a scene in the film about a horse dragging Wu Chun away when it broke into a furious gallop. I asked him then if he needed a stunt man, but he insisted he could do it by himself, with one leg hung on the saddle. All that we could do was clear small stones on road in advance. He is indeed a dedicated actor with professionalism."The film was first announced in early 2009, but filming was pushed back to late 2011 after a British production company withdrew its investment. At that time, in addition to Fan Bingbing, American singer-songwriter and actor Leehom Wang (王力宏), Hong Kong-born American actor John Lone (尊龍), and Japanese actor Shun Oguri (小栗旬) were reportedly cast in the lead roles. Later due to scheduling conflicts, John Lone, Leehom Wang, and Shun Oguri left the cast. Production finally resumed in August 2013, with Leon Lai Ming and Wu Chun replacing the original leads. To date, this historical epic recounting the legend romance of Yang Guifei has been formally announced for release on Thursday, July 30th.
Xiaohua: The TV drama Saga of Wu Zetian was previously pulled off air after female characters appeared on screen showing cleavage. Now it returns to the screen, though this time all the scenes with obvious cleavage were reedited, leaving only the actresses’ heads. 近日,由范冰冰主演的热播电视剧《武媚娘传奇》在被叫停4天之后复播,剧中的“武媚娘”等女性的胸部镜头全部被剪,网友戏称电视剧变成了《武大头传奇》。First of all, do you think is this the reason that the show got pulled off and then got on? Is it because of the cleavage thing?Zhou Heyang: Well, I can only speculate here, but I would come to the conclusion that this is probably at least a partial reason if not the main reason why this show disappeared on screen for only four days rather abruptly. And I think it’s, well when you look at the new version, the only real change is that there are major close-ups in like every scene and you don’t see the actors…John: Below the chin.Zhou Heyang: Below the neck and above the eyebrows. It’s very difficult to see the beautiful hair ornaments and anything above that, so it just focuses on the face and nothing else.John: Well, I think for me it’s interesting, because I never heard this story. Obviously, I don’t really pay attention to TV and movies, Chinese or otherwise. So for me it’s interesting, because I got the chance actually to watch the first episode last night. And first of all, my initial impression was it was a horrible TV show and I would not recommend it to anyone. It just seems like yetanother silly soap opera, melodramatic piece of tripe. So I think that you know, first of all, there is that, but at the same time, you know, we should necessarily expect anything more at this point. But for someone who had no experience of the TV show before it was pulled and reedited, I couldn’t really tell that much of a difference. It just seems like some of the shots yes they were a little odd, there were some like cuts where there might have been panning shots things like that. The framing was off sometimes, but in general I didn’t feel like there were much taken away, but that could be partly because it was just bad to begin with.Zhou Heyang: But I don’t think it’s that bad to begin with. Maybe there is a debate whether the story is told in a favorable way or not or whether it’s interesting or not. But when you look at the production, they invested a lot of money. John: Yeah, a lot of money.Zhou Heyang: And you’ve got major stars, such as Fan Bingbing.John: I know. I do want to say that I think in general the production value is much higher. They obviously invested a lot more money into the technology, so in terms of the recording itself but also the post production. There has been a lot of working on post-production outside the whole cleavage issue I think. I was disappointed, however, to see the voices were still dubbed. With that high production value they shouldn’t be all that dubbed, but in general the acting was OK, but the story doesn’t make any sense.Zhou Heyang: Well, there are a lot of reasons why…Well, there are some official reasons given out whether this is the reason why this reediting happened, so there was the, you know, technical reasons and also there was the quota argument that because the TV station was already airing too many period pieces. But I think those reasons when you weigh that against, you know, all those cleavage scenes which might seem a little bit strange to Chinese people, because I think in our culture, even today for female to show cleavage in public, it’s still considered a bit uncouth or maybe just going too far, whereas in like western cultures, I think showing cleavage isn’t really that a big deal. You see that in office environment, so people wearing suits, you know very official office wear, and it’s not really that a big of a deal. I think there is a quite difference there.John: Yeah, cleavage is a bit more normal. I will give you that, but it is strange. I mean, you know, whether or not it’s about cleavage all. Yes, I mean it seems pretty obvious after the edits, but at the same time, you know, this type of cleavage has been on TV shows on Chinese television before, it’s been in famous movies and it hasn’t been that much of issue. I think the fact was on Hunan Satellite Television was telling. They were always the ones that pushing the limits a little bit and pushing the envelope in terms of what is allowed in a sense. So you know I’m not surprised to see this is them getting in trouble in a sense for whatever it might has been.Xiaohua: Yeah, maybe purely because there are too many episodes with it, and somebody couldn’t stand too many episodes of cleavage on TV.Zhou Heyang: And also it’s like the really popular show right now and with Fan Bingbing’s star power, I think it has drawn actually more people to watch it now, because all of the fuss about the reediting.John: Yeah, that’s actually a very good point. I don’t’ think I have heard it, had it not been cut and then re-aired.Xiaohua: Also do you think there is automatically a way to solve this problem which seems to always bother authorities, that is appropriateness?Zhou Heyang: Well, there is always the argument that we should protect the minors, but if we have a rating system in movies and TV series, I think it would solve the problem.
If you decide to watch Chinese wuxia fantasy film "The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom" or Baifa Monü Zhuan, make sure you've read the original novel by Liang Yusheng, otherwise you'll have to use your imagination to sail through the film's problematic storyline. Liang Yusheng is one of the three most important wuxia-story writers in China. His 1957 novel Baifa Monü Zhuan tells of the romance between a young swordsman Zhuo Yihang and his lover Lian Nichang. Set near the end of the Ming Dynasty, the story also depicts an ailing empire plagued by internal corruption and Manchurian invasion. Director Jacob Cheung's film adaptation has failed to reconcile the subplots, and as a result the narrative develops like a deserted bonsai, with wild grass shooting at various directions. The most obvious strain of runaway storyline is the love story. A few inventive alterations notwithstanding, it seems the director is utterly incapable of romantic thinking. His way of showing the beginning of affections is to have two beautiful actor and actress gazing into each other's eyes while spinning in midair and slow motion. His ultimate weapon is actor Huang Xiaoming's perfectly symmetric face and Fan Bingbing's whitewashed one. They serve as silent but eloquent accusations against anyone who dares to doubt their sincerity. Obviously people with good looks belong together, if not then there are some serious problems with the story. A second subplot is the court intrigue. The director devotes considerable screen time to the depiction of a eunuch who usurps imperial power to prosecute upright political adversaries. Our hero Zhuo Yihang is one of his victims, so naturally we expect some major bloodshed before the closing credits. But before he has time to deliver on his promise of revenge, some emergency at the nation's border demands our attention, and our hero is summoned to save the day. It is in the latter half of the film that we finally see the title character take the central stage. That's when both leading characters show abrupt changes in their personalities. The previously strong and confident hero Zhuo Yihang suddenly becomes as feeble as a lamb, while the loving Lian Nichang simply goes berserk. The character inconsistency suggests the filmmakers have placed their attention elsewhere, although no one can tell exactly where. Perhaps the only commendable part of this film is the post production. There are plenty of computer generated visual spectacles to show off the lunar kingdom. The splendor looks artificial, but is impressive nonetheless.

Hello and welcome to this edition of "In the Spotlight", a show featuring arts, culture and showbiz from right here in China. I'm your host Li Ningjing. The fourth Beijing International Film Festival has just concluded in Beijing. The Festival attracted film makers, distributors and film lovers from all over the world, including movie stars Jean Reno, Lea Seydoux and Adrien Brody as well as Chinese actresses Zhang Ziyi, Fan Bingbing and Liu Yifei. American director Oliver Stone, "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuaron and Hong Kong director John Woo also joined the forums at the festival to share their views on film making and the future of the global film industry. So in this special edition of In the Spotlight, we'll focus on the Beijing International Film Festival and take an in-depth look at the state of the Chinese movie industry, which seems to be showing causes of worry for industry insiders despite impressive box office gains. We'll also be speaking with Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron on his recent Oscar win and possible collaboration with China. On top of that, a restoration of a famous 1930s Chinese production, The Goddess also screened during the festival. These stories and more are all in the pipeline. Do stay with us. ******************************** Alfonso Cuaron is one of the most fascinating directors in the world, especially after his win at the Oscars this year for his film, Gravity. Now, he is sharing his wisdom with young filmmakers in China at the Beijing International Film Festival. Our reporter Doris Wang caught up with him to get a glimpse inside the mind of this creative genius. That was Doris Wang talking to Alfonso Cuaron about his Oscar win and the possibility of making a movie in China. ******************************** This is Alfonso Cuaron's second visit to Beijng. He was talkative when sharing his impressions of the mega city. "It's vast. It's huge. It's polluted. And also at the same time it's of a big energy. Also you can feel that it's a city of young people. You can see that. You can feel that in the street. Of course I've going around in the historical sites. They are absolutely amazing. What I really enjoyed is getting lost in Hutongs." Cuaron admitted that his mandarin was not amazing. He turned to body language when he was lost in the Hutong alleys and needed to ask for directions. But he added that he found familiarity between himself and the people he met in Beijing's Hutongs. "I have gestured to them. And they gestured back and talked to me. And maybe they laughed. But I found again it felt somehow familiar. The region. The experience. There is warm as well. That again it feels for me similar from where I come from. It's completely different cultures. But there's familiarity to me." for compelte script: http://english.cri.cn/7146/2014/04/22/3301s823313.htm
