*EXCLUSIVE Interview with Robert Ray, the last man sentenced to Death in Colorado* At just 34, Robert Ray has already been in prison for 16 years. Sentenced to death in 2005 for a crime he is adamant he did not commit, Robert was the last man sentenced to Colorado’s Death Row. In his first ever interview, I talk candidly with Robert, about his life growing up in the ghettos of Chicago, gang culture, his trial and why he was happy to receive the death penalty. Robert opens up on the pain of being abandoned by his wife and loved ones, we discuss what he really thinks of the jury foreman and what happened when Governor Jared Polis commuted his sentence. With the victim being a senator’s son, questionable witness motives and a racist jury foreman who published a book on the trial, Robert’s case had everything, but did it have justice? Incarcerated Since: 2005 Sentence Received: Death Sentence Commuted to Life Without Parole in 2020 Convictions: Attempted 1st Degree Murder 1st Degree Assault Accessory to Murder 1st Degree Murder (Conspiracy) x2 If you would like to know more about Robert you can read more at www.ifonlyyouknewpodcast.com.au Link to Robert Ray’s books: https://www.amazon.com/Stereo-What-Robert-K-Ray/dp/1727653602/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=robert+k+ray&qid=1619914836&sr=8-5 https://www.amazon.com/Chloe-Her-Bike-Robert-Ray/dp/B08LN97CS6/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=chloe+bike&qid=1619914887&sr=8-2 https://www.amazon.com/Trans-What-Robert-K-Ray/dp/B088XWV5JD/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=robert+k+ray&qid=1619914836&sr=8-2 Robert Ray’s College Fund: https://au.gofundme.com/f/robert-rays-college-fund?qid=b6186174fe778a6f11cb053c4d485b5e Follow If Only You Knew Podcast on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter for more episodes, photos, videos and other show content. Jesus ‘Eddie’ Campa joins me to discuss and reflect on his illustrious and at times, controversial career in law enforcement. Born and raised in El Paso Texas, Jesus retired as the Chief Deputy of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office after a 20 year career. Jesus’ last tour as Chief of Police in a city impacted by racial divisions led him to create and implement the innovative No Colors No Labels Initiative designed to remove the preconceived notion that the Police were racially motivated. As an advocate for diversity and with firm beliefs that the workforce should mirror the community they serve, Jesus speaks candidly about the challenges he faced within his own ranks and why he feels he was in the right place, at the wrong time. While browsing for the her next social justice mission in the early days of the internet, Tracy Lamourie, an avid human rights activist, stumbled upon a death row prisoner pleading his innocence. Becoming a Doctor is unlike any other career. When you dedicate your life to medicine it’s years of study, gruelling hours, limited appreciation and a lot of tragedy. There is an expectation placed on you by society that you serve others and must continue to do so for the rest of your life. We hold Doctors to an exceptionally high standard and respect everything they do. So what would make someone walk away from it all? This week I’m chatting with Dr Meagan Kruger, a former medical doctor who despite the stigma that surrounds the decision to quit medicine, left her busy hospital career to lean in to the things that truly fulfilled her. After suffering a cardiac event following basic keyhole surgery at only 17 years of age, Asha was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, non-compaction and mitral valve regurgitation, which to keep it simple, means she has Heart Failure. She was told to stop everything. No sports, no dancing, no fast food, basically to stop life but swapping a teenage lifestyle for a long list of medication did not see Asha’s condition improve, instead she was getting worse. A combination of frustration and a lack of understanding of her condition saw Asha push herself to the limits. She did everything she wasn’t supposed to. Parties, more than a dozen gym sessions a week and working excessive hours. This rebellion landed Asha in ICU where she was then transferred to the Advance Heart Team in Perth and within three months she was booked in for Heart Surgery to implant an Internal Cardiac Defibrillator. It was there that she met the wonderful people from the Heart Foundation Australia who provided Asha with the resources and support to fully understand the seriousness of her condition and also prepare her for the inevitable – a Heart Transplant. As a young woman staring down the barrel of a heart transplant within the next few years, Asha is on a mission to raise awareness and much needed funds to support lifesaving heart disease research and organ donation awareness and she was crowned Miss Charity Australia in November 2020. Asha wants everyone to know that you are not alone and that information is power. To learn more about the Heart Foundation Australia check out their website and become an organ donor here. As the daughter of felons and growing up in a pub seeing first-hand the detrimental effects of drug and alcohol abuse, Dr Dawn Carpenter knew she wanted something different for her life. Dawn wanted to build a legacy so she escaped through education. Secretly living in academic buildings on her University campus and not having enough money to contribute less than 20 dollars to her graduating class’s parting gift, Dawn went on to become a successful Investment Banker who spent time at Wall Street powerhouse JP Morgan. After her “Jamie Diamond experience” in the elevator of JP Morgan’s headquarters in New York, Dawn wanted to find the why completing a doctorate of Liberal Studies at Georgetown University some years later where she researched the responsibilities of wealth and asked the question: What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? With her unconventional upbringing and having a mother who was the first woman incarcerated in the largest women’s prison in Ohio, Dawn was passionate about being an adoptive mother and had a lot of love to give. Not long after the fall of the USSR, Dawn set off to Russia with cash strapped to her body and bribes in hand to adopt her first daughter, going on to adopt her second daughter a few years later. We discuss the corruption of adoption, the inhumane orphanages, dealing with her children’s severe illnesses and how she has explained the past with her daughters. Dr. Carpenter’s experience with CDFI’s, working with purposeful companies and her overwhelming desire to do good, it’s little wonder that Dawn is now a leading authority for financial management and the capitalization of social purpose corporations. Dr. Carpenter’s work in business ethics also positions her as a leading authority in socially-responsible business and investment. Dawn’s story explores the responsibility of wealth, ethics, morals, corruption, motherhood and overcoming adversity. I’ve saved a special conversation for the last episode of 2020. This week I’m chatting with Talley. Talley is an independent filmmaker and musician who grew up making movies and playing in bands with friends after his parent’s divorce brought him from Oklahoma to Texas. At 18, Talley was working as an on-site photographer and editor in News Television taking on any freelance video jobs he could get. Naturally talented, Talley moved to study film at the internationally acclaimed Colorado Film School and went through his twenties making movies, music and having fun! Talley was on an upward trajectory which sadly turned into a downward spiral. After graduating he struggled to make ends meet. Jobs were hard to come by, a number of post-film school collaborative projects failed, his band split and relationships collapsed. Talley and I discuss the highs and lows of creative arts and working in jobs you hate while pursuing your passion despite never quite knowing if your day will come. Talley explains how after some setbacks he turned his attention to independent music and how he re-branded as a solo act. We chat about getting fired, the American unemployment system, contracting and recovering from coronavirus, mental health and addiction. This is one of the most honest and raw conversations of the year and you will feel yourself riding the waves of Talley’s highs and lows. EDIT: Since recording this podcast Talley was hired for the biggest directing jobs of his freelance career so far and is working hard everyday on his music, film career, mental health and addiction from his new home in North Carolina Woods. If you would like to know more about Talley you can check out his website, join his Patreon or follow him on Instagram or Facebook and you can read more at www.ifonlyyouknewpodcast.com.au Follow If Only You Knew Podcast on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter for more episodes, photos, videos and other show content. With me this week is success coach, speaker and author Georgia Bamber. After studying economics and working in corporate finance for two years, Georgia asked herself a question. “What does it take to create a good life and how can I make one for myself?” Knowing the corporate world would not provide the happiness she desired, Georgia left it behind and never looked back. As Georgia candidly admits, anyone can call themselves a coach but with a Bachelor of Economics, a Master of Business Administration and a Masters of Psychology, Georgia has the credentials to help people start living their best life. We talk about why people need a life coach, the challenges you face when you critically reflect on your life and why getting a coach or mentor is the most lifechanging experience of your life. Georgia has lived across the world and her experience is just as diverse. Working with refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong, Georgia was a saviour for women that had experienced so much trauma but this created an internal conflict when returning home each evening to her loving family. Having gained so much knowledge and with so much to give, Georgia set out to write a book, "Achieve Anything You Want", which went on to become a number one bestseller. Georgia talks to me about the importance of discipline (she has done at least 10 minutes of yoga every day for 4 years!) and she tells me to let go of the idea of balance. This is one conversation you won’t forget. If you would like to know more about Georgia you can check out her website, follow her on LinkedIn, Instagram or Facebook and you can read more at www.ifonlyyouknewpodcast.com.au Follow If Only You Knew Podcast on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter for more episodes, photos, videos and other show content. Not content with her role as Marketing Manager/Business Development Manager and concerned with the lack of female representation in the transport industry, Errin-leigh learnt how to drive trucks and now holds a Multi-combination (MC) Driver’s Licence, the highest driving qualification in Australia. Errin-leigh and I discuss why she pursued the career she has, how she handles rejection and where she finds her inspiration and motivation. We talk about online bullying, sexual harassment and decanting what people say and why they are saying it. Of her career thus far Errin-leigh says there has been fun and laughter as well as struggles and tears and this episode will have you experiencing all of those emotions. If you would like to know more about Errin-leigh you can follow her on LinkedIn, Instagram or read more at www.ifonlyyouknewpodcast.com.au Follow If Only You Knew Podcast on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter for more episodes, photos, videos and other show content. This week I’m chatting with Kurt Scheuermann. Kurt has just left his job as a Senior Safety Advisor and Trainer & Assessor for a global construction and engineering company to move into a completely new role in child protection. We discuss his early career, how safety has evolved over the years and Kurt shares some best practice examples from some forward thinking organisations. I ask Kurt what it takes to build a positive safety culture from the ground up and we discuss some of the contributing factors that lead to poor safety decisions. Kurt talks openly and honestly about the challenges he faced as a FIFO worker and how he found himself drinking and eating to replace the emotional connection with his children and partner. We discuss relationship breakdowns, mental health and wellbeing and the moment Kurt realised his feelings weren’t quite right. Kurt also talks about his traumatic start to life and how a chance meeting in a Woolworths supermarket catapulted his career in a completely new trajectory. We discuss the necessary and important hoops to work in child safety, how his family has supported such a huge change to all their lives and how he manages to disconnect from the emotional burden of working in this field. After spending twenty years in the construction industry, Kurt is now using his gifts to help children from vulnerable backgrounds thrive and not just survive. EDIT: since recording Kurt has ben finding his feet in the child protection space and has been busy getting Loves Harvest up and running. A company he started with his partner that sells homemade plant based, compassionate, vegan products. NOTE: Unfortunately there were a few glitches with the audio that led to some acoustic feedback. This occurs a couple of times when I’m asking Kurt some questions and doesn’t impact Kurt’s audio so bear with it, the answers are worth it! This week I’m chatting with Jenny Taylor. Jenny has had a long and unfair journey with her health and wellbeing. After seriously injuring her back and undergoing spinal surgery, Jenny finally thought her health woes were behind her. That feeling was short lived as this was just the beginning. Deep down Jenny knew something wasn’t right with her body. She was losing feeling in her limbs and it could no longer be put down to ‘back related pain’. After 9 months, a mountain of tests, doctors’ appointments and feeling like she was losing her mind, Jenny was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy or CIDP for short. CIDP is an incurable, rare neurological disorder that progressively gets worse over time. While grateful for the validation of her symptoms, this diagnosis was mind numbing. In this episode Jenny explains CIDP and we discuss her diagnosis and prognosis. We chat about starting a new job straight after the diagnosis and how she has dealt with her career ending well before it should. We discuss her early career, how childhood relationships influenced her workplace behaviours and Jenny gives some great tips for people pleasers. Jenny talks candidly about how she has planned for the inevitable decline in her health and how true friendships have helped her through some really dark days. Despite such adversity, Jenny remains upbeat with a goal of one day competing at the Paralympics. UPDATE: Since recording this podcast Jenny has been told that she is medically unable to fulfil her dream of being a Paralympian. Knowing Jenny, I’m sure she has her next goal already in the pipeline. If you’d like to know more about Jenny you can follow her on Instagram or LinkedIn. Jenny also has a Blog which details the start of her journey to now. This week I’m chatting with Jessica Gilchrist. Jess is an entrepreneur who wants to live in a world filled with innovative business. Jess’ passion for entrepreneurship started early in life when she transformed a conservative chocolate tour business into a thriving and cutting edge Melbourne experience. Then in December 2015 Jess was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma Cervical Cancer, the rarest type. After multiple surgeries and going through menopause in her mid-twenties, Jess and her family established Pink Boots Hire, a social enterprise with the vision of improving the lives of those going through cancer. Jess came back with a bang and through the Pink Boots Foundation, Jess and her family have helped many others affected by cancer. Jess and I chat about her early event management career and why she persevered to secure a role with an organization that repeatedly told her no. Jess explains how this set her on the path for future career success and we discuss the difficulties of working with family. We talk education, business coaches, health and wellbeing, networking, being authentic and having fun! Jess’ tenacity and optimism is infectious and this is a conversation not to be missed. Jessica is a powerhouse! This week I’m chatting with Jeff McKeon, Coach, Mentor and Practitioner of Purpose. Jeff grew up in the 70's in a country town and struggled to find his way with an alcoholic father and an obese type 2 diabetic mother. His parents divorced when he was 11 and battling to make ends meet, it was at age 15 that he sat down and wrote a suicide letter to his mother. Luckily he made it through this period and moved to Brisbane after finishing school. Jeff loved to talk which paved the way for a successful 25 year career in sales. In February 2019 while training for a 1600 kilometre cancer charity bike ride in honour of his passed mentor Alan Maxwell, Jeff suffered and survived a heart attack and found himself asking 3 simple questions - Did I live, Did I love, Did I matter? In March 2020 Jeff quit his well-paying, secure job and went into the field of coaching to spread the message of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. Listen in as Jeff and I talk about these life changing moments and the events leading up to them. This week I speak with qualified Carpenter, Joiner and Social Entrepreneur Daniel Allen. Dan, along with his best mate Edward Ross co-founded TradeMutt, a social enterprise that exists to drive social and cultural change to prevent the loss of Aussie lives to suicide. Dan and Ed had an idea to use funky work shirts as a way to start conversations around mental health within the blue collar community. This extraordinary concept has evolved into a workwear, lifestyle and media brand promoting positive conversations not only through their workwear, but through various social media platforms - TradeMutt’s 120 Grit podcast, Trademutt Toolbox Talks and their online publication, the Mutt Hub. Dan and Ed have also established their own not for profit mental health support service - TIACS. This is a conversation starter (TIACS) provides free, unlimited access to mental health via a support line, which removes many barriers that tradies face when trying to access vital support. Dan and I chat about his decision to start TradeMutt, its evolution, scaling a not for profit and using profit for purpose. We talk about framing discussions around mental health, showing vulnerability in the workplace and the fine line between banter and bullying. We also chat about celebrating the wins and the personal changes Dan has had to undergo moving from the job site to the leader of a social enterprise. I ask Dan how he intends to stay true to their vision and values and make sure they never miss that call. Even if you’ve never heard of TradeMutt, chances are you have seen someone in a TradeMutt shirt. So next time you see someone in one of their outrageous designs, go and say hello because they are making an invisible issue impossible to ignore. If you or someone you know needs someone to talk to, call TIACS on 0488 846 988 If you would like to know more about Daniel you can follow him on LinkedIn or read more at www.ifonlyyouknewpodcast.com.au For more on TradeMutt visit their website Follow If Only You Knew Podcast on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter for more episodes, photos, videos and other show content. This week I’m chatting with Laurie Harper, a former First Class Cricketer who represented Victoria in 38 first class matches and 16 one day games as a left handed batsman amassing over two thousand first class runs. Laurie was regarded as one of the best slip fieldsman of the time and was a member of the winning Mercantile Mutual Cup team of 1997-98. Laurie also won Victoria’s Player of the Year title in 1997-98, edging out Dean Jones for the award. Laurie gives a frank and honest account of trying to make it as a professional cricketer at a time where Australia had, without doubt, the best cricketers in the world. Playing with and against the likes of Dean Jones, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, Jamie love, Justin Langer, Mark Hayden, Michael Slater and Michael Bevan, Laurie certainly mixed with the best of the best. We talk about the world of professional sport and how it has changed over the years including rates of pay and the current recruiting practices. We also discuss the pressures athletes face, the criticism levelled by the media and I ask Laurie for his take on some negative media attention he received. With a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University, Laurie’s skills run deeper than the cricket pitch and we discuss the need for a balanced approach to life, sport and education. While Laurie may have started in the forklift industry because “they let him go to training”, he is now the Managing Director of QLD Forklifts, a premier materials handling supplier in South East Queensland and beyond. Laurie shares what he looks for in staff and how he has taken the lessons learned on the field and transferred them into his business, company culture and leadership style. This week I chat with Katie Bunch, a UK expat with a Bachelor of Media and Communications from Birmingham City University. After finishing her degree and saving some money, Katie headed to Bali for a break but wanting to visit Australia, she quickly boarded a flight to the Northern Territory and commenced her Aussie backpacking adventure. Not unlike the 1.2 million UK citizens who call Australia home, once here, Katie fell in love with her adopted country and visited parts of Australia that many Australian’s haven’t yet been. During our chat Katie gives me her take on the UK education system and we discuss how less than 10% of her cohort are actually working in the field in which they studied so hard. Understanding the competitiveness of her chosen career, Katie quickly learnt that she needed to be persistent and determined and it was these traits that earned her an internship at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and a coveted role with Channel 7, one of three commercial television networks in Australia. Katie dishes the dirt on the pressures of working in such a cut throat industry and gives some insight into the world of digital marketing and dealing with Google every day. This week I chat with Nick Wormald, the Managing Director of Grow Capital. After spending his formative years as a boarder at the prestigious The Kings School Sydney, Nick left the city with forty dollars in his pocket to become a Jackeroo at the remote Kurundi Cattle Station in the Northern Territory Australia. Nick shares some amazing stories about his time on the 3857 square kilometre station, a place so remote it is hard to fathom. Nick went on to work around Australia and the UK before setting up Grow Capital with his best mate from boarding school and we talk about the reasons for the job changes and his return to study. We also discuss Grow Capital’s aggressive growth strategy and the value of a business coach. Nick opens up about some really personal times in his life and how they shaped his future and we also talk about meditation and mindfulness and how Nick incorporates these strategies into his daily routine. It is a conversation not to miss. You can follow Nick on LinkedIn and for more information on Grow Capital check out their Website or follow their LinkedIn and Facebook pages. This week I chat with Nicolas Chiew, a husband, father and qualified Engineer who works as the Operations Director for three industry associations and also as a Director for a Registered Training Organisation. Nicolas studied a bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) at the University of New South Wales and started his career as a Project Engineer, cutting his teeth at multi-national engineering giant Sinclair Knight Merz. After five years working in this field, Nicolas felt underappreciated and wanted to explore his own autonomy and build his career his way. Nicolas seized on an opportunity and went on to found, build and later sell a successful telecommunications consulting firm. After 10 years running his own business Nicolas’ marriage broke down and he discusses how he dealt with the three most stressful events a person can experience – divorce, selling a home and selling a business. Nicolas opens up about his mental health battles and how he found solace working in the aid space on ‘for purpose’ projects which included volunteering for a research project looking for orangutangs in Sumatra Indonesia! Nicolas promised a warts and all interview and he definitely delivered. Life is full of ups and downs and Nicolas’ story is no exception. You can follow Nicolas on LinkedIn. This week I chat with Briannah Fisher, an Aussie who moved to North Vancouver British Columbia Canada at the start of the pandemic. Moving your family across the world at any time is challenging but moving from sprawling acreage on the Northern Rivers in Australia to a 75 square metre apartment in Canada at the start of a lockdown takes it to the next level! Briannah and I discuss the need for her to re-brand herself in Canada and how she now describes herself as a marketing swiss army knife as a way to differentiate her skills and experience in her new country. Describing her university experience as learning how to learn, Briannah certainly did a lot of learning studying Law, Economics, Nursing, Biomedical Science, Psychology, Education and Chemistry before graduating from James Cook University with a New Arts Media degree. Graduating with this degree in 2011 meant Briannah was ahead of the curve in the digital media space and we talk about how the stigma that was once associated with Arts degrees has shifted with those soft skills now some of the most sought after by employers. Not long after landing in Canada, Briannah founded Made in Vancouver, an online magazine celebrating Vancouver’s creatives, makers, doers and dreamers. This desire to help nurture the rebuilding of an economy in her adoptive country is truly remarkable. Briannah’s enthusiasm is infectious and you won’t be able to stop smiling while listening to her fascinating story. Thinking about going back to study? Then check this out! This week I speak with mature age student Rose Reck. Like many young people, Rose wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with her life and contemplated becoming a tattoo artist, a chef and a nurse. Also like many young people, 13 years of study had taken its toll and Rose wanted to enjoy a ‘gap year’. A year filled with travel, adventure and making money! Most people that take a ‘gap year’ don’t head straight back to university and Rose was no exception. It wasn’t until her sister decided to go back to the books and some healthy sibling rivalry started, that Rose decided she was going to invest in herself. We chat about the challenges of high school, the inequity of university entrance exams, the daunting cost of further education, the flexibility of online courses and balancing work, study and life. Rose also has some great advice on how to get organised and stay motivated! This week If Only You Knew Podcast chats with Phoebe Haywood, Principal Policy Officer at Queensland College of Teachers. As a young girl, Phoebe has vague memories of playing teacher with her younger sister but went through school wanting to be a surgeon. It wasn’t until her senior years that Phoebe found herself looking at teaching as a career option. After completing a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) History & Geography with QUT, Phoebe returned to her former high school as a Geography & Modern History Teacher. Phoebe and I chat about impostor syndrome that she, and many young professionals feel when they commence work as a graduate. Phoebe’s first role was more challenging than most as she found herself teaching kids not that much younger than herself! Phoebe’s impulsive nature led her to a teaching job in Qatar, a world away from Brisbane Australia and Phoebe tells us about the differences in culture, teaching children with English as their second language and the loneliness and isolation that comes with living away from family and friends. Since returning from Qatar Phoebe has gone on the complete a Master of Business Administration, moved away from teaching and into education policy and has now started a law degree. We talk about these big changes and how Phoebe’s career aspirations have changed. With new roles created every year, let’s see where Phoebe’s career takes her. This week I speak to Ben Sinclair, a Customer Success Manager with a global software company about broken dreams and new beginnings. In high school, Ben was a sports scholarship student with dreams of becoming a professional footballer. Like many athletes, Ben didn’t have a backup plan, he just put everything he had into becoming a football star. After finishing high school and not immediately making an AFL side, Ben went on to play VFL for a few years, starting a carpentry apprenticeship to pay the bills while he pursued his goal of gaining that elusive AFL position. Overnight Ben’s dreams were dashed and his football and carpentry careers came to a grinding halt after a freak worksite accident. Ben and I chat about this life-changing moment, the lifeline his grandfather gave him, the challenges of working in a family business and how his network has led him to a new career path with new goals and much different life aspirations. Ben’s story is raw, real and inspiring. This week I chat with Stefan Tschirren about his journey into the field of Engineering. Stefan took quite a streamlined approach to his career going straight from high school to university and into the corporate world. While he found that this approach accelerated his career it didn’t give him the time to discover himself. We talk about the subject selections he made to put him in the best position for his future and how his environment influenced his decision to choose this career path. Stefan lets us in on his biggest takeaway from university, how engineering is a cloud of illusion and I open a can of worms when I ask about the difference between civil and structural engineering! When Stefan tells the story of how a colleague’s inadvertent mistake led to the death of innocent people, we discuss the lessons Stefan learnt from such a tragedy. The pressures faced by engineers is very real and Stefan talks about his unique way of disconnecting and tapping into his creative side. If you’re looking to become an engineer, work with engineers or want to know what they do, this episode will give you a great insight into the world of engineering – where magic happens! When I chat with Craig Ford, a Cyber Expert and Best Selling Author of "A Hacker I Am" and "A Hacker I Am Vol 2", we talk all things cyber. We discuss state based hacking groups, the recent unprecedented Government announcements about the ‘sophisticated attacks on Australia’ and how we are losing our privacy through Government legislation such as the 2018 Assistance and Access Bill, that allows access into encrypted sites such as WhatsApp & Snapchat. Craig explains social engineering and we talk about the realistic structure of cyber-criminal groups, the enormous amount of money paid to them through the dark web via bitcoin and other crypto-currencies and the new way to launder money. Craig gives his take on organisations paying ransoms, their obligation to notify data breaches and law enforcement’s capability to investigate cybercrime. We delve into the difficulties faced by people wanting to work in the cyber industry and how Craig went on to study two Masters degrees over six years just to get the roles he was already technically capable of doing. When you hit rock bottom something has to change but change is a process. It’s a daily task and not a one day job Quite quickly Dima learnt that the workplace was a far cry from the big dreams she had held during university. After 20 years as an Architect working for organisations all around the world, Dima Istambouli hit rock bottom. Dima opens up on how she came to that realisation and the strategies she used to try and lift herself out of depression knowing that she was emotionally broken but financially limited. As an outlet for her emotions, Dima started sharing positive quotes on Instagram and discovered that by reaching out, many people started contacting her for support and advice. Dima helped everyone who asked but as her own tears kept falling, she could not understand why she was able to help everyone except herself. Dima talks openly about how she discovered a new perspective on life and the intentional behavioural changes she made. Horrible bosses, stealing time and firing clients! I’m talking with Nicole Murdoch who’s an Electrical Engineer turned Intellectual Property Lawyer who also holds a Masters of Industrial Property. With few electrical engineering opportunities within Australia at the time, Nicole turned to computer programming but found herself waking up every day unhappy and wanted to make a change so she could enjoy her journey through life. A life-changing event led Nicole to enrol into a law degree (and despite her dad needing sedation after being told!) she completed the degree with honours and has gone on to found her own legal practice, Eaglegate Lawyers and Out of Court, a neutral dispute resolution referral provider. We chat about career shifts, how law firms really operate, supporting junior lawyers and how being qualified doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a dream job. You can have what you want if it’s all that you want When I chat with Alicia Mewburn about her new business venture Kokoro Living, we discuss brand creation and the change in mindset required to build a business where the end goal needs to be at the forefront of every decision. We chat about working on the business not in the business and turning big dreams of going global into a reality. Alicia opens up about first dropping out of University before going on to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Media Studies just to please her parents, to travelling the world, raising four young girls whilst side hustling and working in jobs that she didn’t really enjoy. We discuss the moment Alicia realised she needed to” back herself or get off” and her journey of self-discovery, self-investment and being a Girl Boss!
