Amid the Covid-19 crisis, Operation Warp Speed helped to develop vaccines with astonishing speed. But even with a fast-tracked FDA process, there still remain significant questions about risk, liability, and intellectual property. These are the subjects of two new Gray Center working papers by Professors Sam Halabi of the University of Missouri and Professor Kristen Osenga of the University of Richmond. The papers were discussed at a roundtable last fall, and published as working papers this year. In this episode of the podcast, they join Adam to discuss their papers and what we’ve learned since the fall. (NOTE: Unfortunately, we encountered some audio difficulties during the recording). In Episode 114 I sit down with Emily Manoogian, PhD from the Panda lab at Salk Institute to learn about how we can improve our health by nurturing our our circadian rhythms. Emily and her team are considered world leaders in the field of science known as 'chronobiology' and have published several studies (and many others currently under way) investigating how the timing of our meals effects our health. In this episode we specifically cover:What circadian rhythms areWhy we need circadian rhythmsWhat circadian disruption isWhat social jet-lag isLearning from shift workersHow external cues such as light exposure and meal timing affect our circadian rhythmsTime restricted feeding (TRF) and what Emily's research has identified so farThe difference between TRF and fastingWhy Emily recommends having more calories in the first half of your dayWhat to do if you are someone who routinely has dinner very late (e.g many Europeans)Lots of practical information that you can put into playFuture research Emily would like to conductand much moreAs I note at the beginning of this episode in the introduction. While the time restricted eating that we talk about is far from an extreme protocol, if you suffer from an eating disorder and find the subject of meal timing in any way to be triggering then this may not be the best episode for you, which is totally fine! You can just pick the show back up next episode, and come back to this episode in the future if you feel the timing is more appropriate for you. NOTE: Unfortunately the audio quality of this episode is not as high as I would ordinarily like. While I much prefer having these conversations in person (and hope to get back to that format soon) with COVID-19 I've needed to record remotely in order to continue having such informative guests on the show.Resources:My Circadian clockEmily's Tedx TalkContinue the conversation:We would love to hear from youEmily Manoogian, PhD: Twitter.Simon Hill: Instagram and TwitterMy Book:My book is coming out early 2021 published with Penguin - I cannot wait to share with you. This week I’m chatting with Kurt Scheuermann. Kurt has just left his job as a Senior Safety Advisor and Trainer & Assessor for a global construction and engineering company to move into a completely new role in child protection. We discuss his early career, how safety has evolved over the years and Kurt shares some best practice examples from some forward thinking organisations. I ask Kurt what it takes to build a positive safety culture from the ground up and we discuss some of the contributing factors that lead to poor safety decisions. Kurt talks openly and honestly about the challenges he faced as a FIFO worker and how he found himself drinking and eating to replace the emotional connection with his children and partner. We discuss relationship breakdowns, mental health and wellbeing and the moment Kurt realised his feelings weren’t quite right. Kurt also talks about his traumatic start to life and how a chance meeting in a Woolworths supermarket catapulted his career in a completely new trajectory. We discuss the necessary and important hoops to work in child safety, how his family has supported such a huge change to all their lives and how he manages to disconnect from the emotional burden of working in this field. After spending twenty years in the construction industry, Kurt is now using his gifts to help children from vulnerable backgrounds thrive and not just survive. EDIT: since recording Kurt has ben finding his feet in the child protection space and has been busy getting Loves Harvest up and running. A company he started with his partner that sells homemade plant based, compassionate, vegan products. NOTE: Unfortunately there were a few glitches with the audio that led to some acoustic feedback. This occurs a couple of times when I’m asking Kurt some questions and doesn’t impact Kurt’s audio so bear with it, the answers are worth it! This time, we're providing a brief, spoiler-free review of The Lighthouse, the new film from director Robert Eggers, director of the Witch (or "the VVitch," but frankly I refuse to acknowledge this). Support the podcast! It is amazing how much stock we put in other people's opinion of who we are and how we are supposed to be in the world. Recently I was introduced to the quote "I'm not who I think I am. I not who you think I am. I am who I think you think I am." [Note: Unfortunately the source of this quote is not clear, or I would provide it. It is variously credited to Charles Horton Cooley, Thomas Cooley, and Dennis Cooley.] The gist of the quote is that we often find ourselves trying to live up to an imagined standard that we think other people have for us. This is a surefire recipe for self-sabotage! Either we will be trying to do what we want to do and trying to do what we think others want us to do. This has us taking action in multiple and often conflicting ways, which results in little to no progress. OR we take no action at all because we are caught between our own desires and the perceived desires of others. In this week's podcast I provide two ways to remedy this situation. First, I have a simple process for uncovering and tapping for the specific expectations we think others have for us. Second, I have more general tap-along to help you get moving even when you can't see the beliefs clearly. As always, I have included a text version of the tapping script below the audio player that you can print out. Subscribe in: Apple | iPhone | Android | Google | Spotify | Pandora

Adam Rodricks is the Senior Manager of Social Media & Community at KPMG. His claim to fame in the world of social media and blogging came in 2007 when he reluctantly sold his blog after being served with a cease and desist. The important takeaway from the ordeal was validation: he could make an impact (and a career) through engaging conversation. Adam is a 2-time “Top 30 Under 30 Canadian Blogger to Watch” and a previous winner of the National Rogers Marketing Competition, for which he also held the title of best undergraduate speaker in Canada. He’s spent the last decade growing the social properties of Canada's most prominent brands, managing all aspects of their digital marketing strategy including social listening, management of social media channels, crisis comms and social media programs. His work as a social media influencer has been featured on CBC, CTV, Yahoo, BNN, DigitalJournal.com, MaximumPC, WhatCulture.com, staples.com, and nintendo.ca In this conversation we talked about the power of social media, the state of the internet, and rebounding from failure. We also talked about balancing your time, the importance of exercise, and having multiple focal points. --- NOTE: Unfortunately we've been having some audio issues. For the first thirty years of her life, Carla was a performing and teaching musician. She earned a B. A. in piano performance (high honors, Phi Beta Kappa), and a masters’ degree in arts, major in music theory. For several years, Carla taught flute and piano in colleges and gave private lessons. Moving to Seattle, Washington while pregnant with her son Chris (yes, it’s Chris Cross, and he owns a real estate company now….), Carla started selling real estate as a fluke when Chris was 14 months old. (Her training was really ‘in the field’!) With no training and little guidance, Carla still found she loved selling real estate, because it was a challenge and a contrast to music. She attained recognition in the top 1% of her 400 agent company in her third year in the business. While setting sales records, she kept playing music and teaching for several years. For this week's show, Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola rage against CNN for firing Marc Lamont Hill over comments he made before a United Nations committee on Palestinians and their struggle against Israeli military occupation. They talk about a vote in the U.S. Senate, where a war powers resolution to end U.S. military involvement in the Saudi Arabia-led war in Yemen moved forward. Later in the show, the hosts highlight a piece in POLITICO that was published by an unnamed author to promote a wild conspiracy theory about Russia planting a Paul Manafort-Julian Assange story in the Guardian. [*Note: Unfortunately, we recorded less than 24 hours before former President George H.W. Bush's death was reported. We have plenty to say about his legacy and the response to his death. It will be nothing like what you're hearing on cable news networks, and we'll share our thoughts next episode.]

This week, we take the show on the road in order to pin down Taniele Gofers. Taniele is regarded as one of the best Water Polo players of her time and is also a bronze medalist in Beijing 2008. Stepping away from the sport, Taniele currently works for the United Nations in Myanmar. She speaks passionately and intelligently about important world issues and gives a healthy dose of perspective for us all. NOTE: Unfortunately we left the metronome on during this recording, we thought this recording was way too interesting to not publish so we hope you understand!
David Armstrong continues the series ‘Resident Aliens’ looking at the church as a community of the ancient and how the counter-intuitive way of Jesus hides our future inside our history. The call for the church then is to rediscover those ancient paths and walk in them, learning particularly from our own Celtic spiritual history in Ireland. (This is the first part of a two part talk). This series ‘Resident Aliens’ explores the idea of the church living in a strange age. Over the six talks we looked at the communal identity of the church, why it matters and what it's for. Note: Unfortunately the recording of the excellent talk given by Stephanie Wilson on 3 June 2018 entitled "Resident Aliens: Part 4 - A Community of Differents" is not available due to recording difficulties. Apologies.

They start by taking about Jay's recent visit to Washington DC to disrupt the inauguration and to participate in the Women's March. Tom provides a footnote to open source activism and talks about what he would like to see in terms of the strength of discourse. Jay raises the size of crowds and Tom talks about some of the science behind this. Sean Spicer is impossible to ignore. Tom puts his experience in San Jose up for analysis. Jay provides a great insight on her time in DC with an example of strategic use of privilege. Under Jay's instigation they return to Assange and the Russians. Tom gives some analysis on Grizzly Steppe. [Note: Unfortunately there were various technical difficulties which cut a small portion of the recording.] Tom concludes the recording with a reflection on the inevitability of war.

The story might go on and on and on but our three part interview with Tony Award winner Richard Malby, Jr. must come to an end. In the final episode of season one, Vanessa and Casper pull out a few key insights from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. They finally get around to talking about Harry himself, revisit the kindness of the Weasley twins, and think about the thematic relevance of food in the book. Throughout the episode they come back to ideas about vulnerability, friendship, and love. Note: Unfortunately, we're still having trouble with microphones. This time, just to keep you on your toes, it's Vanessa that sounds a little wonky. All will be fixed (hopefully!) in season two. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We listen back to a TBTL two-fer from 2013 featuring dreams of childhood heroics and a private work bathroom. Plus, Bobby apologizes, Mike comes out as bidet-curious, and Elizabeth shares a tip on getting racy pictures developed. (Hint: Find the Walgreens staffed by amiable old women with poor natural vision.) Note: Unfortunately for our youngest Wagoneers, this one gets a little blue in spots. But if it’s any consolation, I think we lost any chance of getting free marinade when we hit bidet talk, so we’re all hurting here.

Play Episode 69 Here A common challenge for SE Practitioners is accommodating clients who have high expectations for the success (or failure) of this work. Too often immediate demands from either the client or practitioner curtails curiosity, participation and permission to engage with a process that necessarily takes time to develop and unfold. In this episode I look at some of the considerations we can hold while accommodating high expectations in our office. Note: Unfortunately the recoding of this episode included a background buzz that I'm unable to eliminate. This will probably make listening through earbuds or headphones unpleasant. My apologies for that. I'm still learning. I appreciate your patience. - Twig
What do you do when your twelve-year-old son announces he’s going to run across America? That's the dilemma Brett & Kris Wilcox faced, hoping that in time their son David would simply forget about his crazy idea —“it's a phase….he'll grow out of this fantasy eventually……right?”Well, David refused to let up. In fact, he doubled down. On the heels of becoming the fastest freshman cross country runner in his region of Alaska, David became more determined than ever to become the 2nd 15-year old ever to complete a transcontinental run.Needless to say, his parents had a decision to make – quash their son's dream, or dig deep to help make it happen. I am happy to say they chose the latter. And on January 18, 2014, David and his father — supported by his mother Kris and 13-year old sister Olivia — began their coast-to-coast attempt, launching from Huntington Beach, CA en route to Washington, D.C.David has his motivations. But in order to run alongside his son, Brett needed his own.As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Brett has spent his career helping people heal from the poison and pain they’ve endured at the hands of bullies and batterers. Now, he's turned his attention to global bullies—bullies like the giant chemical companies that poison the Earth, our political processes and our agricultural system. The author of We're Monsanto: Feeding the World Lie After Lie*, Brett knows a thing or two about GMO's, the ills of factory farming, the depletion of our soil, and the future of food.So Brett — and David — are running across America to say enough is enough. And during the course of our conversation we dig deep into these issues — what exactly these companies are doing to our food system, why we should care, and what we can do about it.It's a fascinating conversation and one I am proud to share with you. What this humble family has set out to accomplish is extraordinary. But they can't do it alone. Every great accomplishment requires the support of a great team. They need all the help they can get. So let's be that team for them. Towards that end, I implore you to visit their Indiegogo fundraising page and — if it feels right to you — consider contributing to their mission and advocacy — a cause that affects us all, irrespective of dietary preference, geographical location or political prediliction.I hope you enjoy the conversation!NOTE: Unfortunately we did experience some audio quality issues with the recording. Just when I think I have this whole thing figured out! Something about my mic being too hot and the others lower. I don't know. Tyler worked really hard to clean it up, but it's not perfect. Hope it's not too distracting, and all I can say is that I will continue to try harder, learn and do better. Give Tyler a shoutout in the comments below, he's doing a great job as my producer. And all the music cues are his own original compositions.SHOW NOTES* Indiegogo Campaign: Running For a GMO-Free USA* Running The Country Official Website: http://www.runningthecountry.com/* See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Chef Homaro Cantu is blazing the way into the new era of postmodern cuisine. Heralded as one of America’s most daring chefs, Cantu pushes the limits of known taste, texture and technique in stunningly futuristic fashion at Moto. A scientist at heart, Cantu is driven by insatiable curiosity and endless possibilities. The same childhood enthusiasm that drove Cantu to dismantle his father’s lawnmower many times over and chomp on five-, ten- and twenty-dollar bills as a young boy still consumes him. Tagged a “techno chef” and a “real life Willy Wonka”, he brushes off these labels and merely refers to himself as a cook when asked. But calling him a cook only scratches the surface – delve a bit deeper and discover an equally talented and inquisitive chef aiming to shatter the traditional rules of the kitchen by introducing new technologies to his chosen craft. Cantu’s goal? To entice 21st century diners to embrace unimaginable — for most — edible creations. Make no mistake, Cantu has not lost sight of what entices most to the dinner table – great tasting food. While guests may be stunned by the creativity on display at Moto, rest assured that this young chef can cook. Having grown up in Portland, Oregon, Cantu graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in 1994 and then staged in nearly 50 kitchens on the West Coast before moving to Chicago in 1999. He chose to settle in Chicago having obtained a position as sous chef at the world-renowned culinary mecca that is Charlie Trotter’s. Cantu honed his already sharp skills in this demanding kitchen and after four years, ambitious and with a hunger to test the waters, he left Trotter’s to open MOTO. Dining at MOTO is more than a culinary experience; it also provides a window into the inner workings of Cantu’s mind and the future of gastronomy. It both questions and challenges the diner. Offering tasting menus comprised of ten and twenty courses, Cantu stretches the imagination and takes you on a culinary adventure from the very first bite – a bite which may be taken directly from your menu, one that is printed on edible paper. Chef Ben Roche has become a leader of creativity and ingenuity in the field of pastry arts. In less than 3 years as Executive Pastry Chef of Moto in Chicago, news of Ben’s work has been the subject of numerous print articles and national television shows including Iron Chef America, Dinner: Impossible, Unwrapped, Sugar Rush and print articles including USA Today, The Chicago Sun Times, The Chicago Tribune, Fast Company Magazine and Gourmet Magazine. Ben has also been featured as a keynote speaker at prestigious gatherings around the world for his inspirational approach to innovation that influences numerous aspects of creative sciences. These appearances have included a design symposium for the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC), Stanford University’s Design School, Taste 3 Napa Valley in both 2007 and 2008, Pop Tech’s Impact of Technology on People in Camden, Maine and numerous other venues. When asked to describe himself, Chef Roche simply states, “I like to constantly evolve existing dishes by making them slightly different every time, even when following recipes. Sometimes this ends in a failed experiment, but that’s how we learn and progress. That’s a reflection of my personality as well, evolving with the times and always being prepared for change.” NOTE: Unfortunately this segment was not available in 720p.
