Dr Matthew Adams is a Principal Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Brighton, UK. In both teaching and research, he is an advocate of psychological, cultural and social approaches to experiences of distress that challenge medical and individualist models. He has undertaken research and written extensively on the healing benefits of nature and human-nature relations in an era of unprecedented ecological crisis. His most recent book is Anthropocene Psychology: Being Human in a More-Than-Human World, published by Routledge in 2020.It was his article recently published in The Conversation which caught our attention : A radical nature based agenda would help society overcome the psychological effects of coronavirusMatthew explains: More of us than ever are stuck indoors, whether we are working at home, self-isolating, or socially distancing from other households. Long periods of isolation are already impacting many people’s mental health and will continue to do so.On the other hand, people have reported discovering outdoor spaces on their doorstep as they are forced to stay local. Many say they have felt happier for doing so.This reinforces the surge of research exploring the psychological benefits of connecting to nature that has developed in recent years. The idea is also growing that encouraging time in and engagement with nature has enormous potential in terms of mental health and wellbeing.Matthew shared this beautiful meaningful poem with us: William Martin - The Parent's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parentshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/101826.The_Parent_s_Tao_Te_ChingDo not ask your childrento strive for extraordinary lives.Such striving may seem admirable, but it is the way of foolishness.Help them instead to find the wonderand the marvel of an ordinary life.Show them the joy of tastingtomatoes, apples and pears.Show them how to crywhen pets and people die.Show them the infinite pleasurein the touch of a hand. And make the ordinary come alive for them. The extraordinary will take care of itself.Matt referred to Attention Resoration Theory by Kaplan and Kaplan.Theory (ART) and first appeared in their late 1980s book The experience of nature: A psychological perspective. Everything is an object of design with Maureen Thurston

Maureen’s 40-year career as an industrial designer has spanned the globe, multiple industries and creative disciplines. Her diverse background as an entrepreneur, educator and consultant has manifested itself into her current role as the world’s first Chief Experience Officer (CXO) for an engineering firm Aurecon – quite possibly the first CXO in any of the big-4 professional service firms today.  She led the company’s Design to Innovate program – part of Aurecon’s Future Ready, by design strategy - by embedding the mindset and methods of design as a catalyst to foster innovation, reframe culture transformation and reinforce Aurecon’s brand promise to ‘Bring ideas to life’. She is also Chair of Good Design Australia, indeed a multi talented guest!  Maureen believes we are all creative, and that is part of our super power as human beings and that we need to ask more questions and seek more answers, rather than simply looking for solutions .  She believes all innovation is simply an output - an outcome - of asking the question  - Why?  The why question is to trigger learning.  She loves to use her design thinking skills to work on problem solving with groups and have fun in reframing problems into opportunities.  She loves nature, being outside and seeing the expansiveness of the horizon - as a way to pause more and think about what it is that might be possible?  In a Design Context - Maureen describes TetraMap as a  framework for catalysing innovation.   Fire- is the catalyst to spark innovation.Water - is the flow of co-creation.Air - is the space to achieve clarityEarth - is how the discipline of design helps make the world a better place. She is passionate about Inclusivity and Diversity as a strategy for Innovation, and likens it to an insurance policy - one that will help teams and organisations reach better outcomes and achieve competitive advantage.  Maureen explains how anyone can think like a designer, or work like a designer. She say anyone can learn the methods but it is more about the mindset of being human centric - where she refers to the culture of design - as being one of trying to democratise creativity.   Maureen’s professional journey continues to be guided by her absolute belief in the strategic business value of design as a means to unlock innovation, creativity and sustainable growth. There are many, many gems in this 30 minute interview.     Book Recommendations: A more beautiful question by Warren Berger Dancing with Disruption by Mike LipkinQuote  chosen from Oscar Wilde:LIfe is too important to be taken seriously. Maureen's Linked In Details: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maureenthurston/Short Explanatory Videos: The why of things : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmj9lG9hcFgAurecon’s DNA: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mixo1k6gdaskn1u/AURECON_DNA_2020.mp4?dl=0Podcast: Royalty-free music with permission from artist: Woah by Vincent AugustusProducers: Alasdair and Uros: Far Out Podcast

He reveals how past traumas negatively shape personality, and how-to re-frame those traumas, change your memories and break free from self-limiting beliefs. I've been following his work for several years and was lucky enough to score a podcast interview with him. In preparation he sent me an advance copy of his book, fast becoming a best seller. The reviews indicate this is something we'd all benefit from reading.   His in depth knowledge on this topic is particularly relevant for TetraMap facilitators and their clients. In the interview Ben helps explain why people are so concerned about 'personality tests'. This pertains in particular why we always request you don't describe TetraMap in this way.   There's a lot of insights from Ben in this interview, all backed up by science and we're sure you'll find it thought provoking, and him charming. Episode NotesConstantly curious, Lorenzo Gilomee was Head of People Development at the mobile phone network O2 where he worked for over 5 years until recently.  O2 are one of the UK's best known brands with a customer base of over 35 million consumers.  One of his proudest achievements during his time at O2 was developing a new learning culture he called Change the Learning Game, which was to become a recognised commercial differentiator.  Called the O2 Campus, Lorenzo discusses how along with his team how they climbed 'Mount Everest' - his metaphor for enabling the team to be successful. - no-one climbs Everest alone. And why his philosophy of 'my success is entirely dependent on your success' set the conditions for something radical, innovative and scary - and ultimately succesful - to emerge. He was generous to acknowledge how TetraMap played a key role in the approach they took. He says "Learning is not done to people, it is done in partnership with people."  This led the team to consider why learning is important and how they could build a learning culture on three key principles - Connect, Learn and Grow.   Lorenzo is clearly a smart, wise and gracious leader who believes leadership is a priveledge to be enjoyed.  His gift for others is "Earn your leadership by building trust,  and make sure you have fun whilst doing it.".Lorenzo shares two quotes which are meaningful for him. One from American poet Maya Angelou and the other from Barack Obama. Barack's quote he chose to share with our listeners,  tune in for both full quotes.Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. Remote working isn't new, but what is new is the scale, pace and impact of the change. Liz says remote working can definitely work, it can and it does does, but a large part of success is down to the role of the leader. She says it  is important to focus on what we can do, not what we can't influence.  This is the biggest leadership challenge any of us has faced and we need to make a choice to reconnect with our purpose. Do I need to change my purpose, or my team's purpose?  This will help us pick ourselves back up.   Liz shares what she did to pick herself up after most of her work was postponed, what helped to get her thinking clear, and to focus on the longer term. Louise and Liz discuss growth mindset, and why this drives behaviour and therefore the success of any change.  Is there another way to look at this? At the heart of TetraMap and its success is the use of nature as a metaphor. Aristotle said  to master and use metaphor was a sign of genius. Metaphor is compelling and engaging to people of all types of intelligences, or as we start to define in a TetraMap way, people with preferences relating to different elements; earth, air, water and fire. The beauty of use of metaphor in TetraMap is that it is broadly applicable across very diverse teams and organisations, providing a way of unifying the disparate, and ordering the complex.  Narrated by Andrew Melville, a long time friend of TetraMap and the editor of our book ‘ Develop People and Business the way Nature intended’. She talks about  the skills of handling the emotional and sometimes irrational aspects which will often come to the fore when conflict is present.  Jane's chose a favourite phrase  of hers which forms a key part of her work "The only constant is change"  and how recognising a change will often provide a shift to see opportunities which arise during a conflict situation.  She shares a workplace situation where a simmering tension arose and led to a need for workplace mediation. The "I am right and you are wrong" fixed mindset caused an escalation from something small into a much bigger problem. Ultimately her intervention allowed each party to hear the other's perspective and move forward.     Jane unfolds how a fundamental underlying human need  "we all want to be heard"  is a key part of the work she does.   She encourages people to be optimistic about conflict and look for small opportunities to give some thought about - What they are going to say? and What is the best way for me to engage with this other person?  Bio Jane Beddall, MA, JD, is founder and principal of Dovetail Resolutions LLC, a mediation and consulting firm focusing on preventing and resolving damaging conflicts for extended families and their businesses. The impact of this very likely meant a significant proportion of the whole employee population were potentially being overlooked for development opportunities.  Ally set out to prove her theory, and with her findings was able to raise the broader issue of inclusion and what it means at O2.In this 30 minute episode she shares more about the nature of inclusion, leadership and strategies organisations can use in promoting greater respect for diversity in senior roles, and shares some of the initiatives O2 have implemented in recent years to help push their inclusion agenda forward. The results should serve as a role model for catalysing action for many large and small organisations across the globe.Bio: Allyson FayAlly is currently Employee Engagement and Experience Manager at O2/ Telefonica. Since then, we have enjoyed a long- lasting relationship with Ruhia and the team she worked with her through her previous role in Practice Excellence, at Te Wananga O Aotearoa. Whilst at Te Wananga, Ruhia wrote a case study which you can see on TetraMap's website. It explores how they used TetraMap to develop a unique indigenous communication model that supports cultural diversity, fosters stronger leadership and deepens the educational experience for both tutors and students. Ruhia's quote was one handed down by her own mother, relating to Earth, Air, Water and Fire. "When one of these Elements is missing, the body, soul and mind become unwell." We hear from Andrew Melville, a long time friend of TetraMap and also the editor of our book ‘ Develop People and Business the way Nature intended’. Andrew narrates part 4 of the book for our listeners, and in this reading he describes The Nature Series and the TetraPath of learning . He touches on the notion of regenerative development for individuals, teams and organisations. The Nature Series moves from Behaviour, to Team, to Planning and then to Customers. The first step into TetraMap's journey is most important, thus starting with self-awareness a powerful entry point. From there, study each TetraMap and decide for yourself what sequence of understanding will be more effective for you and your people. Andrew has recently published his book - The Weave: The Surprising Unity in Difference. The Weave offers a bold new model and metaphor for navigating today’s complex world. It builds on the ancient and universal craft of weaving, to offer pathways in communication, engagement and facilitation. ” The Weave gives an insightful new meaning to the flow for strategy…it makes a brilliant and clear map for 21st C thinking, I will revisit the book many times.” Sir Robert (Bob) Harvey Book: Develop people and business the way nature intended.
