Can you imagine living in a city without roads on the surface? We've already put trains underground successfully, but the idea of building roads underground is now inspiring urban planners and engineers. Bradley Garrett, author of 'Subterranean London', says that there's something magical about things happening out of sight, that it "gives the illusion of seamlessness". So, how might underground roads reshape our cities and redefine the daily commute? 那么,地下道路将如何重塑我们的城市并重新定义日常通勤?"If you want to revitalise the city centre, you pedestrianise the roads," says Tom Ireland, the director of tunnelling at engineering company Aurecon. Moving roads below the surface can free up space for parks, pavement cafes, and other public amenities, improving the urban environment and mental health of the population. Not only that, it could reduce traffic congestion above ground, and who doesn't want to be freed from noise pollution and the sight of gridlocked traffic? “如果你想振兴市中心,你就需要在道路上修建步行街,”工程公司 Aurecon 的隧道工程总监汤姆·爱尔兰 (Tom Ireland) 说道。 将道路移至地下可以为公园、路边咖啡馆和其他公共设施腾出空间,从而改善城市环境和人们的心理健康。 不仅如此,它还可以减少地面交通拥堵,谁不想摆脱噪音污染和交通拥堵的困扰呢?Underground roads could also make self-driving cars more popular, which are often more energy-efficient, and less prone to collisions. This, in a world trying to reduce its fuel consumption, is appealing. But if driverless cars end up becoming more attractive than public transport, it could actually make traffic worse, because cars take up more space than trains and buses. That's not the only drawback that may come with a motorised world beneath our feet. The construction and maintenance of underground infrastructure are both hazardous and energy-intensive processes. On top of that, most people don't like the feeling of confinement you get when you're travelling through underground tunnels, which may affect public perception. Dreams of roadless, car-free cities bring both excitement and scepticism. John MacDonald: Commissioners needed for Chch council?

Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 29, 2023 5:40

Yesterday, I was contacted by someone who, I think it's fair to say, has had a gutsful of the Christchurch City Council. They are someone who is involved with business groups and community groups in Christchurch and they've felt compelled to get in touch after all the goings-on over the last couple of weeks. We've had the chief executive quitting, the chief financial officer quitting, the KPMG report which looked into that $6.5 million budget blowout in the Three Waters division - where we had a whole lot of unapproved spending on hiring more staff. Not to mention all the other comings and goings —generally goings— throughout this year. To the point where the council in New Zealand's second-largest city has no chief executive and no CFO. And other senior people away on “leave”. There's been a lot of that this year. It seems that if you're on leave at the Christchurch City Council, it generally means you've left. Then there's the other crazy stuff going on. Stuff like the money being blown on that beautification trial on Gloucester Street, in the centre of town, near the Turanga central library and where the new Court Theatre's being built. So, quite rightly, people are scratching their heads and wondering what the hell's going on at that outfit. You may have heard that the new Local Government Minister is keeping an eye on things and wants to find out more. It's also being reported that the Auditor-General's office is taking an interest. It says it's been in touch with the council and wants to “further understand” what's going on. Particularly, the $6.5 million in unapproved spending, and the other issue that's emerged in the last few days. This leaked report by external consultants Aurecon which says a lack of leadership and accountability at the council is putting billions of dollars of public assets at risk. These are things like underground pipes, roads, parks and playgrounds, as well as facilities such as libraries, pools and community centres. I understand the report that was leaked is still in draft and not yet finalised. But the council's had the draft since September. As it's being reported, the report talks about the council's ongoing failure to document the condition of many of its core assets and some maintenance is understood to be years behind schedule. So, when you consider all of these things, you can see why this person involved in business and community groups has had enough. They say the majority of Christchurch citizens are sick and tired of the incompetence, and lack of accountability and common sense at the council. And they think the Government needs to step-in and appoint commissioners to take over.We know the Local Government Minister is aware of reports about the city council and is taking his time to get across all the details. He also expects to be briefed on the resignations of the chief executive and the chief financial officer. Personally, I think we're close to needing government intervention. But I don't think we're at that point just yet. Because I think we need to know first whether the departures of the chief executive and the chief financial officer were more than just “resignations”. Because if they were given their marching orders, then that would give me a little bit of confidence that there is some hope that the council can sort out its own mess. But, I tell you what, I'm not far away from joining the call for commissioners to take over. Not far away at all.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kate Moshoadiba is the Head of the Bid Management Office at IQbusiness, which is a leading independent Management Consulting firm in South Africa, for the past 6 years.                   This “Proposals Fanatic” has over 15 years of experience in handling winning Proposals and Bids, and has earned herself a great reputation and experience within this profession. A pioneer in what she does! She guides her organization's key stakeholders in developing compelling, compliant, responsive and winning proposals.                Kate has worked for a diverse range of companies (in Auditing, Consulting, Engineering and Mining), such as Deloitte, Aurecon, LRGM, Lexmark, RSV Enco to name a few. She holds a degree in Bachelor of Business Administration (2017) from Milpark Education and a Marketing Management Diploma (2010).                 Kate has been part of the APMP family and a member of the APMP South African Chapter since 2014, and now appointed the Chair for APMP South African Chapter. She has an APMP Foundation accreditation and is currently pursuing her next, which is the Practitioner, hoping to bag it by June 2022.                  This bid professional is purpose-driven, that is, she acts on things bigger than the services she provides in her career. Within the organization she works for, IQbusiness, she drives and leads as part of corporate social responsibility, an initiative within the education space called the Alexandra Education Committee (AEC), mentoring young people and raising funds towards their education. This way creates an impact and empowers young people's lives and their future to create and embrace lasting positive changes. She has served on this NPO, on the AEC Council and the AEC Alumni Committee as the Alumni Chairperson since 2013 (on the committee since 2009).              Kate is an independent, ambitious, well-spoken, well-groomed and vibrant woman, who faces life with courage and determination. She is a widow and a mother of three (1 girl, now late as of June 2021 and two boys). Never mind “a series of her unfortunate events”, she carries on living a purpose filled life, with her shoulders up and a smile on her face. She keeps on thriving and her plan is to obtain her PGDip in Business Management. One day she hopes to run her own organization training people in entrepreneurial skills and business acumen.               Before her boys wake up, she jogs, 2kg of weights, 30 minutes of exercise and she is ready to conquer the day. When she is not taking over the world, you will find her at some park or some fun-fair event with her boys being playful, in a world of superheroes, unicorns, rainbows and jelly tots. What she likes doing for fun, is to watch the same episode of “Peppa Pig” and pretend she has never seen it before

In this episode, Maithili Ghadge, podcast host, talks with Rudi Vermaak, a Professional Structural Technologist specializing in the design of the water retaining structure's team in the Water Unit at Zutari (Formerly known as Aurecon). He is responsible for structural analysis, design, and coordination. He has done the structural design (including reinforcement detailing and supervision) of numerous structures including three hydro-power stations, settlement analysis of a reservoir, pump stations, biological reactors and even a tiny pre-cast slab for a chamber. Rudi talks about the stigma around structural Engineers, agility, and adaptation of structural engineers to the environment and why structural engineers are underappreciated and misunderstood. He also shares some insights on how modern structural engineers fit into an organization. Tune in to learn more about the soft sides of Structural Engineers. Timestamps [01:06] Stereotypical structural Engineers [02:40] The stigma around structural Engineers [02:40] Structural Engineering generational changes [05:23] Are structural Engineers technical dinosaurs or specialist's analysts? [08:51] Why structural Engineers are underappreciated and misunderstood [11:43] The agility and adaptation of Structural Engineers to the environment [16:29] How the modern structural Engineers fit into an organization [22:42] Rudi's conclusion Quotes ● Structural Engineers are good technical, analogical thinkers but have weak intrapersonal skills. ● The new generation is willing to work more as long as there is a tangible benefit. ● Structural Engineers are difficult. They are not the easiest people to work with. They are always asking questions. ● Don't stop talking. You need to make sure that people are aware of your feelings and needs. ● As Structural Engineers, we need to be part of the bigger picture. We need to be involved in every component of a project.
