Maureen’s 40-year career as an industrial designer has spanned the globe, multiple industries and creative disciplines. Her diverse background as an entrepreneur, educator and consultant has manifested itself into her current role as the world’s first Chief Experience Officer (CXO) for an engineering firm Aurecon – quite possibly the first CXO in any of the big-4 professional service firms today. She led the company’s Design to Innovate program – part of Aurecon’s Future Ready, by design strategy - by embedding the mindset and methods of design as a catalyst to foster innovation, reframe culture transformation and reinforce Aurecon’s brand promise to ‘Bring ideas to life’. She is also Chair of Good Design Australia, indeed a multi talented guest! Maureen believes we are all creative, and that is part of our super power as human beings and that we need to ask more questions and seek more answers, rather than simply looking for solutions . She believes all innovation is simply an output - an outcome - of asking the question - Why? The why question is to trigger learning. She loves to use her design thinking skills to work on problem solving with groups and have fun in reframing problems into opportunities. She loves nature, being outside and seeing the expansiveness of the horizon - as a way to pause more and think about what it is that might be possible? In a Design Context - Maureen describes TetraMap as a framework for catalysing innovation. Fire- is the catalyst to spark innovation.Water - is the flow of co-creation.Air - is the space to achieve clarityEarth - is how the discipline of design helps make the world a better place. She is passionate about Inclusivity and Diversity as a strategy for Innovation, and likens it to an insurance policy - one that will help teams and organisations reach better outcomes and achieve competitive advantage. Maureen explains how anyone can think like a designer, or work like a designer. She say anyone can learn the methods but it is more about the mindset of being human centric - where she refers to the culture of design - as being one of trying to democratise creativity. Maureen’s professional journey continues to be guided by her absolute belief in the strategic business value of design as a means to unlock innovation, creativity and sustainable growth. There are many, many gems in this 30 minute interview. Dr. Benjamin Hardy has a PhD in Organizational Psychology, he’s the bestselling author of Willpower Doesn’t Work. From 2015-2018, he was the #1 writer in the world on Medium.com his blogs have been read by over 100 million people! He has a new, controversial and mind-blowing book that has just been released Personality Isn’t Permanent. In the book, Ben debunks the most pervasive myths about personality, explains why his research show personality tests like Myers-Briggs and Enneagram are non-scientific, can be harmful, and lead people to mediocrity. He reveals how past traumas negatively shape personality, and how-to re-frame those traumas, change your memories and break free from self-limiting beliefs. I've been following his work for several years and was lucky enough to score a podcast interview with him. In preparation he sent me an advance copy of his book, fast becoming a best seller. The reviews indicate this is something we'd all benefit from reading. His in depth knowledge on this topic is particularly relevant for TetraMap facilitators and their clients. In the interview Ben helps explain why people are so concerned about 'personality tests'. This pertains in particular why we always request you don't describe TetraMap in this way. There's a lot of insights from Ben in this interview, all backed up by science and we're sure you'll find it thought provoking, and him charming. I certainly did! Episode NotesConstantly curious, Lorenzo Gilomee was Head of People Development at the mobile phone network O2 where he worked for over 5 years until recently. O2 are one of the UK's best known brands with a customer base of over 35 million consumers. One of his proudest achievements during his time at O2 was developing a new learning culture he called Change the Learning Game, which was to become a recognised commercial differentiator. Called the O2 Campus, Lorenzo discusses how along with his team how they climbed 'Mount Everest' - his metaphor for enabling the team to be successful. - no-one climbs Everest alone. And why his philosophy of 'my success is entirely dependent on your success' set the conditions for something radical, innovative and scary - and ultimately succesful - to emerge. He was generous to acknowledge how TetraMap played a key role in the approach they took. He says "Learning is not done to people, it is done in partnership with people." This led the team to consider why learning is important and how they could build a learning culture on three key principles - Connect, Learn and Grow. Lorenzo is clearly a smart, wise and gracious leader who believes leadership is a priveledge to be enjoyed. His gift for others is "Earn your leadership by building trust, and make sure you have fun whilst doing it.".Lorenzo shares two quotes which are meaningful for him. One from American poet Maya Angelou and the other from Barack Obama. Barack's quote he chose to share with our listeners, tune in for both full quotes.Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we have been waiting for. Louise Duncan, Managing Director of TetraMap International, shares how the system helps people to communicate, build trust, collaborate and get through life's challenges. With the current Covid-19 situation, the TetraMap framework (Firm, Clear, Calm and Bright) can be very effective in ensuring clarity in communication and ensure reach and engagement with a diverse audience. At Inspire Group we've incorporated the TetraMap instrument into our Inspiring to lead programmes as it connects with our way of being at Inspire and is a tool that can be used in any global context to help leaders (or anyone) tailor their approach to situations they find themselves in. It is simple, easy to understand, relatable and fits right in with how we want to help our leaders grow as people through our Inspiring to lead programmes.
At the heart of TetraMap and its success is the use of nature as a metaphor. Aristotle said to master and use metaphor was a sign of genius. Metaphor is compelling and engaging to people of all types of intelligences, or as we start to define in a TetraMap way, people with preferences relating to different elements; earth, air, water and fire. The beauty of use of metaphor in TetraMap is that it is broadly applicable across very diverse teams and organisations, providing a way of unifying the disparate, and ordering the complex. Narrated by Andrew Melville, a long time friend of TetraMap and the editor of our book ‘ Develop People and Business the way Nature intended’. It's an 8 minute episode.Andrew has recently published his book - The Weave: The Surprising Unity in Difference. The Weave offers a bold new model and metaphor for navigating today’s complex world. Ally shares some interesting insights into her research with the Elements at O2 and the differing perceptions of their ability to reach a senior leadership position within the business. She followed through on a hunch she observed during many leadership workshops, that if you have a high preference for Water (calm and relationship oriented) AND are female, the opportunities of obtaining or seeking a senior leadership role in the organisation were low. The impact of this very likely meant a significant proportion of the whole employee population were potentially being overlooked for development opportunities. Ally set out to prove her theory, and with her findings was able to raise the broader issue of inclusion and what it means at O2.In this 30 minute episode she shares more about the nature of inclusion, leadership and strategies organisations can use in promoting greater respect for diversity in senior roles, and shares some of the initiatives O2 have implemented in recent years to help push their inclusion agenda forward. The results should serve as a role model for catalysing action for many large and small organisations across the globe.Bio: Allyson FayAlly is currently Employee Engagement and Experience Manager at O2/ Telefonica. Ruhia is a Master TetraMap Facilitator, and like all great teachers is also a student of learning. She is currently studying full time at Waikato University. And taking a total immersion course in Te Reo – called Te Tohu Paetahi and for those that don’t know Te Reo is the language for Maori – the indigenous peoples of New Zealand . Working with and learning from the wisdom of Maori is and always has been very important to us at TetraMap and Ruhia has played a generous and significant part in that. In this episodes she describes the practices and principles that govern Maori values and beliefs and how nature plays such an important role in her culture. . We met back in 2011 – just after the massive Christchurch earthquake, and I remember the day very well. Since then, we have enjoyed a long- lasting relationship with Ruhia and the team she worked with her through her previous role in Practice Excellence, at Te Wananga O Aotearoa. Whilst at Te Wananga, Ruhia wrote a case study which you can see on TetraMap's website. It explores how they used TetraMap to develop a unique indigenous communication model that supports cultural diversity, fosters stronger leadership and deepens the educational experience for both tutors and students. Ruhia's quote was one handed down by her own mother, relating to Earth, Air, Water and Fire. "When one of these Elements is missing, the body, soul and mind become unwell." Andrew narrates part 4 of the book for our listeners, and in this reading he describes The Nature Series and the TetraPath of learning . He touches on the notion of regenerative development for individuals, teams and organisations. The Nature Series moves from Behaviour, to Team, to Planning and then to Customers. Amy Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School is our latest guest on the podcast. In her early career she worked alongside her hero (and ours) Buckminster Fuller as 'Chief Engineeer'. What an amazing connection. Charming and gracious, Amy is a research professor who is 'In Her Element' when teaching a group of students, and asking them deep questions to help them make sense and meaning of the topic at hand. Amy is the author of: The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth, and which is currently taking the business world by storm. Although she had been researching and speaking on the topic for decades, it was Project Aristotle from Google, which prompted her to write her latest highly engaging and relevant book - and as she puts it 'tie it in a bow'. She tells the story of some of her more suprising discoveries - into worlds of mistakes and fear, and positive success in high performing organisations and teams. Well researched and a must read for all leaders, HR professionals, and organisations that want to know how achieve success. The quote she chose to share with our listeners, I seem to be a verb - Richard Buckminster Fuller So many gems to highlight in just 30 minutes. Tune in to the full episode. Global business woman, Entrepreneur and Founder of Olive Strachan Resources, Olive has recently been honoured with an MBE in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday honours list. Having worked as a Management Development Specialist and an International Learning Development Consultant for over 20 years, Olive was delighted to be recognised to receive the award for her Services to Exports in Professional Business. Aside from her profession, Olive has contributed and undertaken many voluntary roles including becoming a mentor for the NatWest Entrepreneurial Spark Programme, mentoring young entrepreneurs in start-up businesses. A whole heap of fun, Olive discusses arriving at Buckingham Palace to receive the award, and her trip up the red carpet to meet Prince Charles. She provides her top tips for becoming successful, and how to get yourself noticed, comparing herself to Madonna and how to remain relevant. Female entrepreneurship and helping boards to become more culturally diverse are her current focus. Olive chose to share a powerful quote from Michelle Obama's book Becoming. “For every door that’s been opened to me, I’ve tried to open my door to others. And here is what I have to say, finally: Let’s invite one another in. Maybe then we can begin to fear less, to make fewer wrong assumptions, to let go of the biases and stereotypes that unnecessarily divide us. Maybe we can better embrace the ways we are the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about where you get yourself in the end. There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice. And there’s grace in being willing to know and hear others. This, for me, is how we become.” Michelle Obama Her love for TetraMap comes shining through, Olive tells us how it changed her life and how she's used it for 10 years with clients all over the world. We hear from Andrew Melville, a long time friend of TetraMap and also the editor of our book ‘ Develop People and Business the way Nature intended’. Andrew narrates part 3 of the book for our listeners, and in this reading he describes how the Elements go 3D and are mapped onto the exquisitely elegant shape of the tetrahedron. He sums up the episode with this from Neal Donald Walshe The greatest complexity is the greatest simplicity. The more 'complex' a system is, the more simple its design. Indeed it is utterly elegant in its simplcity. . . Andrew has recently published his book - The Weave: The Surprising Unity in Difference. The Weave offers a bold new model and metaphor for navigating today’s complex world. It builds on the ancient and universal craft of weaving, to offer pathways in communication, engagement and facilitation. ” The Weave gives an insightful new meaning to the flow for strategy…it makes a brilliant and clear map for 21st C thinking, I will revisit the book many times.” Sir Robert (Bob) Harvey Book: Develop people and business the way nature intended. Ian Blackwell is an Executive Coach and Team Effectiveness Facilitator at Astra Zeneca in the UK. Astra Zeneca is one of the world's leading Bio-Pharmaceutical companies, who employ almost 60,000 people globally. Ian describes TetraMap as a game changer for teams at Astra Zeneca. He says " it validates people, it enhances their self-esteem and most importantly, allows for difference to be seen as a team strength." His personal highlight from TetraMap as a facilitator is learning to 'trust the process' and in doing so without exception is the richness of the learning the experience provides for participants. It helps people can be true to themselves, and give them a real sense of value and purpose within themselves. Although Ian likes the Lao Tzu quote "Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished" his favourite is from Gandhi "Be the change you wish to see in the world." His crusade is to be a catalyst for change in others, to help others be the best they can be. This interview is full of depth, and breadth. If you want to understand more about TetraMap's ability to be a game changer in the hands of a fantastic facilitator, you'll learn a lot. .
