Fearless - The Art of Creative Leadership with Charles Day

Edited highlights of our full conversation. Here's a question. If you died today, what would you regret? This week's guest is Jon Cook. Jon is the Global Chief Executive Officer of VMLY&R. Jon died last October. As you'll hear, the fact he is still here to have this conversation required a set of circumstances so improbable that they would have strained the credibility of your favorite episodic drama. But the fact he is still here, gives him, and those that meet him, a living and breathing teacher of what will really matter to us, when we reach our end. As we age, our priorities and the emphasis of our life changes. We define success in more personal, more human ways. And yet, when we become leaders we are judged - and we judge ourselves - against metrics that have limited shelf lives. That will not change any time soon. If you do not deliver economic performance in a for-profit business, you will not be a leader for long. But, and this is a big but, ask yourself now, what would you would regret if today was your last day on the planet? And then live a life that makes room for the behaviors that would change that answer. Life and leadership are about choices. Don't wait until you're dead to make better ones.

Best Moments and Surprises from Paris: 2022 Medical Affairs Professional Society Meeting

Alloutcoach Tim

A few months ago I spoke live across social media with four colleagues, experts and Medical Affairs senior leaders with diverse, global perspectives across pharma and medical devices to discuss some of the best moments and surprises from the Medical Affairs Professional Society's (MAPS) May 2022 Meeting in Paris which we attended. The conversation was a recap of this meeting yet with lots of very forward looking concepts many of you, my friends and colleagues, may enjoy reviewing, particularly as we prepare for the 2023 European meeting to be held in Lisbon by MAPS. So listen to this conversation with Marc Sirockman, Global Chief Executive Officer of MedEvoke; Meg Heim, President and Founder of Heim Global Consulting; Marcus West CEO and Co-Founder of 60seconds.com, and Viorica Braniste, Medical Excellence and Patient Engagement Director at Kyowa Kirin, which emphasizes some of the most pressing issues our Medical division is facing in the industry as we anticipate more developments in our Age of Information. Meg Heim highlights innovative qualitative research in R & D demonstrating Medical Affairs' value earlier in a product lifecycle from Kyowa Kirin as an example of how far along the drug development pipeline the division is able to impact with meaning. Marc reminds the group about the powerful turning point Medical Affairs is undergoing presently, summarized by the meeting's theme "The Medical Affairs' Time to Lead is Now". He mentions that while digital information has exploded over the last two years, Medical has outgrown other functions and it is critical to communicate its value internally to receive the appropriate funding and resources. Marcus speaks about the need for enhancing the coaching culture and real time feedback in Medical - a recurring theme at the meeting. Viorica addresses the unmet need of coaching and training to connect medical insights with powerful business impact to critical diverse stakeholders. Throughout our discussion, we concede how fragmented Medical continues to be in its organization, and why we must change our communication to be more consistent with our environment. We recall an inspirational quote from the meeting shared by Ben Bryant, a veteran pharma executive coach, who said "Leaders are not paid to make the inevitable happen. They are paid to make happen what would otherwise not happen". Our group refers to several sessions about shortening the lag time from generating to capturing to communicating insights, and we compare raw medical insights to oil, which if "unrefined" by definitions or context, become difficult to translate into value. Thus, Marc encourages pharma to begin to "ask for help" more because data insights are becoming overwhelming to manage alone without various agencies and life science solution providers. We also discuss intriguing, controversial, but also encouraging moments from the meeting such as the growing critical need of "ROI" of Medical and performance metrics as well as new conversations about Medical's potential in guiding an entire organization in improving the accuracy of their Sales forecasts. Avishek Pal, Scientific Communications Director at Novartis Oncology in Basel, Switzerland, relays his impressions of the importance of the "cross functional co-creation journey" between Medical Education, Field Medical as well as their insights, and multi-channel and formats of Medical Education to improve how pharma reaches healthcare professionals across the globe. So we look forward to more conversations on leadership, metrics, mentorship, as well as prescriber and patient engagement and education perspectives (comment on our discussion from Gorana Dasic, a pharma executive from Pfizer), at the upcoming 2023 meeting in Lisbon as well. Finally, we discuss the value of joining the incredible non-profit MAPS society, its Mentorship program, and vote on our favorite cities for future meetings after Lisbon: Florence, Berlin, Milan, Rome, Tbilisi, Dubrovnik. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/alloutcoach/support

To discuss The Politics of Equality I am interviewing Mark Nielsen. He is the Global Chief Executive Officer of Talent International and a pioneering leader with over 25 years of experience.  Over the course of his career, Mark has held C-level roles across start-ups, turnarounds, and multinational corporations. This experience spans organizations in Australia, South Africa, China, the United Kingdom, and the USA, and across the recruitment, technology, resources, retail and medical device sectors. Throughout his career, he has held executive and non-executive director positions on listed and unlisted company boards. Mark is often referred to as a “new age” or “next-generation” leader who truly understands the multiple benefits of a fully engaged and committed team. He is particularly proud of having built an open, respectful, and unique culture at Talent.  Mark aims to ensure that each member of the team champions Talent's core tenets of progressive and innovative thinking, passion for technological advancement and digital transformation, and customer-centered service.  Mark's current role is managing Talent's $750m+ business, driving both Talent's global expansion and its cultural and digital transformations. He is also the co-founder and board member of Talent's foundation Talent RISE, which addresses youth unemployment through the mentoring and placement of young people into technology-related roles. In 2018, Mark was named Australian CEO of the Year (CEO Magazine), Professional Services Executive of the Year (CEO Magazine), and Recruitment Leader of the Year – Australia (SEEK SARA Awards). In 2020, he was on the Deliotte 50 Outstanding LGBTI+ leaders list. Mark holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Cape Town is a graduate of The Wharton School's Executive Development Program and is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Mark is highly regarded for his ability to lead and build high-performance organizations with compassion at their core. He is outcome-focused, a long-term thinker and therefore passionate about building strong organizational cultures. Questions we cover with Mark: Can you share your career ambitions – so what you thought you'd do for a living when you were a kid growing up? And did that happen? Your early career story please! How do you define equality and moreover inequality? Is the notion we are all born equal even realistic let alone what we can do to even out the equality divide that permeates everything such as our income status, education, where we live, and of course gender? Is equality above leveling the playfield or compensating when the situation is clearly not equal or fair? E.g. I think of things like superannuation being paid for women who take career breaks for family reasons. Some employers will top it up while they are on maternity leave. You grew up in South Africa which, at the time, was a very conservative country and you say you really struggled to express his identity as a gay man. Still to this day, there are a lot of people who struggle with this and don't have the courage to be themselves. I know you want to change that. As a white male living a fairly comfortable life as far as we know, do you think you have an obligation – maybe more than most – to address equality more than others who may be perceived as less privileged? Why and how do you do that in your work/daily life? The rise of “cancel culture” and the idea of canceling someone coincides with a familiar pattern: A celebrity or other public figure does or says something offensive. A public backlash, often fuelled by politically progressive social media, ensues. Then come the calls to cancel the person — that is, to effectively end their career or revoke their cultural cachet, whether through boycotts of their work or disciplinary action from an employer. Is this recent focus on cancel culture a “mob mentality” on steroids, or a long-overdue way of speaking truth to old forms of power? How can it help balance the power the higher profile people have over us long term or not? What role does business and government play in improving equality in modern society? Share an example or two of how this can be done better or has been done overseas even. Who have been your greatest mentors (1 or 2) and what did they teach you? If you could choose a favorite book, song or film what would it be and why? (Can be serious or quirky!). Take away: What your final takeaway message for us on addressing The Politics of Equality?

Some of the topics discussed in this episode include: • When and why was intensive factory farming introduced? • Why is animal protein mistakenly considered to pack a greater punch than plant protein? • The deliberately hidden costs of meat and how the consumer unwittingly pays for it three times. • The mass mechanisation of the industry devastating the peace and quiet of the countryside, caging animals and removing human involvement. • The grossly distorted economics that surround the factory farming industry. • Why aren't Governments stepping in to help find another way? • The power of the meat lobbies. • How we are locked into a system that forces us to collude with our own destruction. • How factory farming underpins climate change, natural devastation, and global pandemics. • How industrial agriculture is stripping the soil of its biodiversity • The life of a factory-farmed chicken. • The gross misuse of anti-biotics on the intensive farming industry.

A Deep Dive into Analyzing Data for the Media Marketplace, with SMI's James Fennessy and MediaVillage

Data seems tied to almost every media conversations today, but the devil is in the detail without strong analytics. Standard Media Index (SMI) provides that for TV networks to hedge funds based on aggregated spending data from agencies. For Episode 16 of Insider InSites, MediaVillage Managing Editor, E.B. Moss, and data/research reporter, Charlene Weisler, spoke with Global Chief Executive Officer, James Fennessy, about SMI's process and its projections for TV and digital advertising. The transcript below has been edited for clarity and length. E.B. Moss: How is SMI unique? James Fennessy: Standard Media Index started in Australia nine years ago, founded by Sue Fennessy, who ran marketing agencies, and Jane Schulze, former media editor for News Corp Australia. They saw a great opportunity to create a “give to get” data consortium. Agencies were having trouble getting at their own data and thus reporting problems with clients. So, the idea was for SMI to work with their data to normalize it, standardize it, and structure it, so they could report faster and more accurately...and then get access to that aggregated data…. Charlene Weisler: How do you get your data? Fennessy: We get data every week from the agencies via an AWS environment and take automated extracts from all of their invoices across TV, digital, radio, print, and out-of-home. Moss: What companies work with SMI? Fennessy: Partners include big holding groups like Omnicom, Publicis, Dentsu Aegis Network, Havas, Horizon…and leading independents like MDC Partners, RPA and others, and organizations in the marketing effectiveness and measurement space, like Accenture and McKinsey & Co... Weisler:  Does your data also help Wall Street? Fennessy:  We have about 15 hedge fund clients in the US – particularly those who invest directly in media stocks -- because they get to see the advertising revenue of major media companies, which could be a Google, a Facebook, a Snap… before those companies report. They have successfully modeled our data for a competitive edge around how those companies are going to perform in their next earnings period. Moss: Let’s talk about trust... Fennessy: We've got very strict privacy protocols. We never see the agency clients’ spend: we take it at the category level. Weisler: How do others work with SMI? Fennessy: Our big relationships are with the national TV networks ... across the pricing/planning/inventory management and can help them size the entire marketplace and understand their position and the flow of dollars.... We just launched a major ROI research piece with Fox Network Group. There are very good services -- the Kantars, the iSpots -- but unfortunately cost data has been 50, or 60 percent off. We fixed that problem. Weisler: What percentage of the US and the world's advertising spending do you track? Fennessy: We have about two-thirds of all U.S. national TV market invoices...about 50 percent of all premium digital invoices (excluding Google search part)… about a third of the market in print and out-of-home, and about 40% of national radio. In other markets around the world, we have between 50 and 60 percent of ad spend. Weisler: What trends are driving the advertising market?  Fennessy:  Cable news continues to be on fire. In the first couple of months 2018 it was up 13 percent. We continue to see real strength in sports; the Super Bowl was up 3.4 percentage points....The Winter Olympics were up more than 10 percent over the 2014 Games. The NFL regular season was down about 6 percent, but the playoffs were up about 1.5 percent. We've also seen real strength in tentpole events like the Grammys. Weisler: What areas are not really doing that well? Fennessy:  Late night programming on broadcast is down 15 percent for the year, but late-night comedy on cable is doing much better. Weisler: When does the drop in TV ratings impact pricing? Fennessy: The ROI studies show national TV in particular is [still] a powerhouse for return on ad expenditure. The massive problems that digital is having [with brand safety and security] is playing right into the hands of TV networks. So, we expect a strong Upfront. Weisler: SMI reported digital grew double digits last year, but there’s been a lot of talk about pulling back data... Fennessy: ...Digital has probably been overbought. As advertisers have taken more money out of TV and put it into digital, their market share has actually dropped. Now they're starting to… put it back into national TV and there’s a direct correlation to an increase in sales…. But I think you do have to have the right mix. The ARF says an ideal mix is about 82 percent TV and 18 percent digital ...and they work well in tandem, reinforcing each other. Weisler: What are the biggest trends in digital and TV for the next couple of years?  Fennessy:  In digital it has to be around privacy and security. …On the TV side we’ll continue to see innovation… less ads, but much more expensive ads; advanced targeting; different types of creative like the 6 second ad; high-quality drama programming and a real focus on live events.
