Today I will be taking Dr. Feser's Five Proofs book and analyzing the pros and cons. I will start with the chapter "Augustinian Proofs" since it comes the closest to the transcendental argument for God, as well as looking at other works about the inadequacy of bare monotheism, St Basil Vs Aristotle's "great architect of the universe god" and thus no natural theology in the Thomistic sense, as well as some rejoinders to these problems from St. Maximos, as well as Q n A and super chats.

Was the Catholic Church slow to condemn racism? Can Catholic teaching be used to justify slavery? How should Catholics engage with Critical Race Theory, in its popular or academic forms? In this episode, philosopher Edward Feser discusses these and other questions with Catholic World Report editor Carl E. Olson. Feser is the author of the new book “All One in Christ: A Catholic Critique of Racism and Critical Race Theory,” in which he examines what the Church has said and done historically on issues of race, and takes a close look at the origins—and recent bestselling popularizations—of Critical Race Theory. Feser and Olson talk about the genesis of the book, common misconceptions about the Catholic Church and race, the inherent limitations of CRT, and more. Scott and Karl finish their discussion of Edward Feser's Scholastic Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction. The duo picks up where they left off last week, exploring Feser's arguments against scientism and the issues that arise when the scientific method implies moral truths or the limits of reality. Karl says, "It becomes a problem when the scientific method quits being a tool and becomes a metaphysics... things leap out of their proper spot." Scott adds, "There are things about humans that are not explicable by scientism. Those things end up being entirely denied." Tune in to learn more about Feser's contemporary introduction to scientism and what can happen to the human experience if it is reduced to the quantifiable. Brought to you by onlinegreatbooks.com.
Scott and Karl explore Edward Feser's Scholastic Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction. Published in 2014, Professor Feser provides an overview of scholastic metaphysics in the tradition of Thomas Aquinas, relying heavily on an appeal to reason. Scott says, "The scholastics are the best at steel manning. They will investigate, and explore, and expand upon any possible objection to their case and refute them one by one." Karl adds, "Think of it as a classroom of really smart people...it's a very charitable way to think." Scott and Karl discuss the style and approach of the scholastics, guided by the Aristotelian theory of actuality and potentiality. Scott concludes, "The reliance on reason that the scholastics have is more rigorous, more generous, and more modern than most modern philosophy and even science." The duo also begins discussing the professor's arguments against scientism. Producer Brett provides us with a definition of scientism being an excessive belief in scientific knowledge both in its explanatory power and its ability to guide action. Tune in to learn more about the illusion of scientism and the defense for scholasticism. Brought to you by onlinegreatbooks.com.

Fuentes: Feser, E. (2021). The Thomistic Dissolution of the Logical Problem of Evil. Religions, 12(4), 268. What we have here is a failure to communicate… with our constituents. More precisely to consult with them on projects that will affect their communities. Instead current Council and administration talk AT Calgarians and tell them what's best for their neck of the woods. Myself and my guest this episode Ward 9 candidate Kimberley Feser want to change that dynamic. We discuss the need to bring your voice back and make your hard-earned money go further instead of “death by a thousand cuts” when you open your tax bill. After all, it's more important to improve your experience living in Calgary than get bogged down in legacy projects that many Councillors won't see the completion of.Campaigning is always a challenge but this year has presented some unique ones between the pandemic and the recent heatwave. This created an interesting topic as we compared experiences on the campaign trail. From issues, you've brought to our attention to the reaction by some to conservative candidates on social media and how to combat it. Kimberley also shares some insights on how different it can be to campaign as a woman. This episode is great for some laughs, insightful commentary on the state of political discourse, and real solutions to make Your Neck of the Woods a better place for years to come!

In this episode of the Parker's Pensées Podcast, I talk with Joe Schmid about one of his recently accepted papers on Edward Feser's Aristotelian proof for God's existence. Joe takes aim at the first half of Dr. Feser's arg and he schools me on potency, actuality, and types of causal chains and regress. We also discuss his favorite reasons for and against God and what it might take for him to move from agnosticism to belief in God. The previous debate review was well received, so today we will cover the most popular WLC debate on YouTube, his squaring off against atheist Sam Harris. Is William Lane Craig solid in his argument? Does Harris stump him? What about WLC's conglomeration of various arguments and the Kalam Cosmological Argument? As we saw with Dr Feser's book, there are serious issues with this type of argument and even if it proved anything, it doesn't prove a Personal God, much less a Triune God.
John DeRosa of the Classical Theism podcast returns to The Pat Flynn Show to introduce a famous -- and quite controversial -- argument for the existence of God, called the Kalam cosmological argument. The full lecture is for paid subs to JaysAnalysis.https://jaysanalysis.com/membership-account/membership-levels/
Lewis from Discord covers the basics of Thomistic metaphysics from the works of Dr. Ed Feser. This will be a good prep for my first half talk on divine conceptualism and chapter 3 in Feser's book on 5 proofs loaded after this one.

Thomas discusses his libertarian past, explains why he abandoned that political philosophy, and summarizes an article on the topic by the Catholic philosopher Edward Feser. Feser, himself an ex-libertarian who has written books on Hayek, Nozick and Locke, argues that the libertarian view of self-ownership and private property rights cannot be reconciled with classical natural law theory, and lays out a proper natural law theory of private property rights and taxation. The 1st Way of St. Thomas Aquinas is still eminently defensible. I'm joined by Mathoma, a youtube content creator and classical theist, to defend the first way of St. Thomas Aquinas. He answers various objections and comments on the difference between the traditional 1st Way and Feser's rendition of the 1st Way. The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others. Ed Feser is a philosopher, writer, and atheist-turned-Catholic who's published some of the best contemporary academic and popular work on the reasonableness of belief in God and arguments for His existence, and attributes. His popular titles include 5 Proofs for the Existence of God (which I can't recommend enough, and often have), The Last Superstition: A Refutation of the New Atheism (also a necessary read), and Philosophy of Mind. His more technical book, Scholastic Metaphysics, is absolutely worth having on the shelf for any serious philosopher. I wanted to have Ed on because 1) his work greatly caused me to reconsider the religious worldview and 2) share his own conversion story of how he went from being a decade-long atheist to one of the most prolific--and persuasive--philosophers on the religious scene today. I hope you enjoy the interview. Show notes and Resources at: http://www.chroniclesofstrength.com/ed-feser-of-proofs-for-the-existence-of-god/

In this episode we begin a series of recaps and discussions of the issues brought up by individual lecturers at the Society of Catholic Scientists conference on June 9 and 10. We start with Ed Feser's keynote, "The Immateriality of the Mind." Feser's objective was to highlight how our ability to be rational, and in particular for our thoughts to mean something unambiguous - even in the face of our inability to express ourselves in a completely unambiguous way in our spoken or written words - makes it difficult to maintain a purely materialist / physicalist view of human minds and therefore of the universe they inhabit. At the outset he noted that rationality tends to occupy less attention in philosophy of mind and matter than two other properties, consciousness and intentionality, which seem widely taken as more difficult to explain by our contemporaries. For ancient and medieval philosophers, however, rationality was probably the clearest indication that the human mind is not some sort of solely physical mechanism. Feser presents an argument via James Ross (Thought and the World) to try to bring this older consensus into the mainstream. It can be presented thus: Formal thought processes can have an exact, unambiguous content. Material signs and processes never have unambiguous content. Formal thought processes must employ an element not dependent on materials signs and processes. We discuss Feser's points and a few of our own in favor of the two premises: our inability to be sure of the content of arithmetical symbols used outside our own range of experience, the ambiguity of translating ancient languages like Linear A, and the absurdity of believing I can't ultimately know what I'm thinking about.

This episode continues the energetic exchange of last week’s live interview with philosopher Ed Feser. After the show proper, we turned the mikes over to the audience. This week’s special Part II show is the result! Remember, Dr. Feser is the man that professor emeritus of Oxford, Dr. Richard Dawkins, does not want to debate. You can see why in this lively Q&A session, held at St. John the Baptist in Costa Mesa, CA. Feser is sharp, clear, funny, and engages the issues in a way that resonates with young people especially. In this episode, you’ll learn: How to answer basic (and more complex) questions about theism Effective ways to listen before giving answers even true and accurate answers Additional sources of information and formation for Christians looking to improve their communication skills with atheists The importance of patience and humility in the process Resources mentioned in this episode: Five Proofs of God’s Existence by Edward Feser I Burned For Your Peace: Augustine’s Confessions Unpacked by Peter Kreeft. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that the number of atheists has doubled in the United States. Atheism is definitely in the rise. Is God’s existence a matter of faith only? Is there a way we can come to a certain knowledge of God apart from the Bible or the Church’s teaching? If you have friends or family who say they stopped believing in God, this is the interview to share with them. Philosopher and writer Dr. Edward Feser is the author of The Last Superstition, Aquinas, and other books of philosophy. This special episode of The Patrick Coffin Show, taped before a live audience at St.John the Baptist church in Costa Mesa, CA. In this episode, you’ll learn: The right questions to ask atheists That there are strong reasons for believing in God apart from divine revelation Science itself cannot disprove God How to really listen to the atheist objection and provide a great answer in reply Dr. Feser is the man that professor emeritus of Oxford, Dr. Richard Dawkins, does not want to debate. Fog of confusion has settled over the Catholic Church on a number of fundamental teachings in the last 50 years. This is the certainly the case with capital punishment. Countless Catholics have been led to believe that “the death penalty” is morally equivalent to abortion, and many documents from the episcopal level have appeared urging Catholics to vote against laws supporting it. The late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago tried to square the circle with his “seamless garment” approach. While Catholic moral teaching does belong to a whole tradition and thus can’t be segmented into separate silos, the net result of the Bernardin proposal has been further confusion. Did the Catholic Church change her teaching on capital punishment under Pope Saint John Paul II? What about the informal remarks by Pope Francis? What does the Bible say about it? Are there conditions under which a Catholic can still support capital punishment in good conscience? Enter Dr. Ed Feser, co-author with Joseph Bessette of a substantial guide to these questions and more. It’s titled By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed: A Catholic Defense of Capital Punishment, and you owe it to yourself to become familiar with what was once unexceptional and ultimately unquestionable. In this interview, Feser tackles the main objections I threw at him based on the many denunciations of capital punishment I have heard in my life. Finally, a voice of clarity and reason speaking to an issue so prone to emotion and sentimentalism.
