How do you, as an athlete, combine your understanding of sport science and your training and racing experience to most effectively map out your training? That question is the basis for today’s episode, one in which we drift between the philosophical and the practical.   Essentially, we’ll dissect the different ways science and experience can influence how we train. Where does the science shine? Where does experience come into play? How do we best balance the two? And how can we use so-called scientific thinking to improve how we digest and analyze each and every experience we have in our training and races to become a better athlete? Remember that even when we’re talking about your experience as a rider, you are essentiallyJame experimenting on yourself – it's just an N of 1. We’ll talk about all that and much more, on today’s episode.  Our primary guest today is former pro racer turned Ph.D. student Cameron Cogburn. After years of racing for teams including Smart Stop and Jelly Belly, Cameron took an academic turn. He’s now a Ph.D. candidate in theoretical physics at Boston University.   We also hear from physician Dr. James Hull, who appeared in our last episode on breathing; pro racer Erica Clevenger; and our friends from The Pro’s Closet, Spencer Powlison and Bruce Lin.   Let's make you fast!  Learn more about your ad choices. ResMed S9 Autoset CPAP Machine Review: The Answer to a Good Night's Sleep Do you randomly wake up at night, gasping for breath? Experience chronic tiredness throughout the day? Are you prone to morning headaches and restless sleep? All these are symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea--a condition wherein your throat muscles block your airway when you sleep, causing you to breathe intermittently. It's not easy living with sleep apnea. It can even contribute to the development of health problems, like hypertension, heart problems, and diabetes.Fortunately, you can keep it at bay with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. It blows pressurized air into your airway, keeping your throat from collapsing and helping you breathe and sleep better every night. It even helps with snoring problems so you don't have to worry about disrupting your partner's sleep ever again!Key FeaturesIntuitive InterfaceThe device offers a fully colored screen with user-friendly controls. It's also easy to set up, as long as you follow the instructions in the manual.  Both the CPAP machine and its heated humidifier attachment are easily removable for cleaning and traveling.Mask-Fit SystemThe ResMed S9 AutoSet CPAP Machine has a Mask-Fit System that allows you to test the fit of the mask first. Because of this, it's easy to check for leaks.Climate Control Heated HumidifierThe H5i Heated Humidifier uses intelligent humidity controlling technology to offer optimum relief from dryness and congestion.  But take note that this attachment is optional and can be purchased as an add-on to your CPAP machine.SlimLine TubingThe narrow SlimLine tubing helps eliminate drag on your mask, thus improving overall mask fit and sleep comfort.Easy-Breathe TechnologyThe ResMed S9 AutoSet automatically adjusts the pressure to make sure that it only provides the exact amount of pressure required from breath to breath.  Thanks to this technology, you can naturally and effortlessly breathe through the mask as if you're not using a CPAP machine at all.Smart Start / Smart StopResMed's Smart-Start and Smart-Stop technologies allow you to start your machine automatically by breathing into the mask. Your CPAP treatment will also stop once the mask is removed.  No need for controls or switches that you might easily forget.On-Display Advanced Data ReportingThe ResMed S9 AutoSet provides a snapshot of your sleep therapy directly on the device. THIS EPISODE Mike catches up with pal Alex Howes of Garmin-Sharp in the middle of the 2014 USA Cycling Professional National Championships. Mike and Alex had their chat just a few days before Team SmartStop very nearly swept the podium in a one-two finish that put Howes on the bronze medal step.Their raucous and rollicking conversation starts with a cryptic discussion of PCBC (Pro Cyclists Book Club), a somewhat mysterious reading group for Girona-based cyclists akin to Fight Club, crazy tales of their respective grandmas, dysentery as a climbing enhancement, and exploration of the Howes motto - "When bad things happen, I like to be in them."Tough, confident, and talented on the climbs and in the sprints, Howes was tapped as one of the favorites to win the road racing national championships in Chattanooga this year. His experiences in Europe have given him the skills necessary to take his place on the World Tour arena, and this entertaining and insightful conversation between good friends shows the many facets of Howes' diamond-in-the-rough personality.Knowing now how the nationals road race finished with a win by SmartStop's Eric Marcotte and second place by Travis McCabe (as well as the sad and unfortunate crash by Taylor Phinney), it's fascinating to hear the speculation and prediction by Mike and Alex of how the race might play out.We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.As always, Open Mic with Mike Creed is presented by The Colorado Cyclist, Mike's very first professional cycling team in 1998.
