We catch up with the "indomitable force" for a quick introduction to the upcoming Fastest Known Time Of the Year award, and more. "This is my favorite time of the year! We get to discuss all the cool FKTs." But first, we delve into the wonderful world of gravel-bike racing. Many runners got into SkiMo, which we've discussed here, but now the new cross-training sport is gravel riding. "I got into cycling after an injury, and now I love it. It's so fun. And so easy on your body - you can ride all day, and the next day you feel fine." We discuss the 'super bowl' of gravel racing, Unbound Gravel, in Emporia Kansas. "It was really hot, and windy, and sunny ... it was carnage out there ... riders were flopped out the shade on the side of the road." "There was this guy drafting me, and he wouldn't come around. He just wouldn't take a pull. So I started crying. That's what you do, right? He finally comes around, then doesn't do anything, so he's actually slowing me down. So I pass him back, and this time pull away, still crying." "That's what endurance sports are. It's so incredible what the body can do. And the mind." Rob Krar on the Tonto Rim, "Hole to Hump" in the Grand Canyon, and why there are many FKTs in the UK but few in France ... this is a fun conversation. And lastly: Buzz propositions Hillary live on air! What was her response? There was no advertising on this podcast - we rely on YOU. Please show your support here! (The Internet is NOT free). Our Co-Founder and our Director of Community Partnerships gives us the scoop - - - PB: "Races are resuming so FKTs are coming in at a more manageable rate. The UK has a very strong tradition so a lot of action there, including in winter. Australia is active as well." AM: "It's been an amazing year! We forget that Rob Krar and Mike Foote did R2R2R.alt almost a year ago. Then Stringbean beat the AZT by 3 days after temporarily quitting due to snow." FKTs are now a standard part of the sport. The term is used all over the world, the same in every language, pro runners go for FKTs like they would a race, and we all can participate ourselves. PB: "You can - and should - find what is meaningful to you." AM: "I love FKTs! I met my husband doing them, and am continually amazed and what people come up with." Their advice? PB: "Learning and growing is fun. That's probably how I got into this." AM: "Do your homework." It's time for year-end gifts. Consider us! There was no advertising on this podcast - we rely on YOU. Dr. Teddy Bross has finished seven 100 mile races (and 12 of the Nolan's 14 summits :-), and is a physician. Host Hillary Allen asks him for his best advice to manage your long projects in the winter. "The R2R2R.alt is probably too short a swim to develop hypothermia, but is a perfect scenario for 'cold shock'." Teddy confirms Rob Krar's theory (previous week's podcast), that rather than taking the time to change in and out of a wetsuit, it was more important to get warm immediately once out of the water by putting on an insulated puffy jacket and getting moving. "Moving your body by immediately moving is great. But it is depleting glycogen stores, so dehydration and bonking cannot be overlooked." People die from hypothermia. Listen to Dr. Bross's advice so you're not one of them!
Matt Fitzgerald is back for his third appearance on the Rambling Runner Podcast and this time he discusses his new book. A good comeback makes a great story. In The Comeback Quotient, sports journalist Matt Fitzgerald shares the stories of top athletic comebacks, to give you inspiration and tools for your own comeback in sport or life. Every sports fan loves a great comeback. Is there a special quality shared by top athletes who triumph over great challenges? And can anyone acquire it? In The Comeback Quotient, celebrated sportswriter Matt Fitzgerald supplies the answer to both questions. He identifies these mega-achievers of astounding athletic comebacks as “ultrarealists,” men and women who succeed where others fail by fully accepting, embracing, and addressing the reality of their situations. From ultrarunners like Rob Krar to triathletes like Mirinda Carfrae to rowers, skiers, cyclists, and runners all over the world, Fitzgerald highlights and speculates on just what makes these comebacks so compelling. As for whether anyone can stage his or her own great comeback, the answer is a resounding yes: Anyone can become an ultrarealist to some degree. In the tradition of his best-selling How Bad Do You Want It?, The Comeback Quotient combines gripping sports stories with mind-blowing science to deliver a book that will forever change how you perceive the challenges you face, giving you the inspiration and the tools to make the next great comeback you witness your own. Rob and Mike not only did a great route in fine style, but their photo went big in the FKT world. (It should be on the cover of Outside Magazine!) R2R2R.alt runs across the Grand Canyon, with the same distance and elevation profile as the very popular (overpopulated?) Rim to River to Rim to River to Rim route. Big difference: there is no bridge across the river - have to swim! Join co-host Hillary Allen in hearing more memorable thoughts from Krar and Foote. With few races being held it takes creativity to create your own challenge. In this episode we talk to a few runners that did just that. Mike Foote and Rob Krar set an amazing FKT on a Grand Canyon R2R2R crossing in the frigid temps of December 31, which included a naked swim across the Colorado River TWICE! You can see their video HERE. You can find out more about Rob's camp and coaching HERE. You can check out Mike's mountain races at The Rut or at The Runner's Edge. But you don't have to be so elaborate in your planning to have an adventure. Cory Reese shows us that it just takes a simple idea. His challenge was a 23-mile route connecting all eight Mavericks (convenience store) around his town with the added challenge of eating something unhealthy at each! You can find Cory each month in Ultrarunning Magazine as a columnist and check out his book, Nowhere Near First:Ultramarathon Adventures From The Back of the Pack

His writing has appeared in numerous sports and fitness publications, including Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health, Outside, Runner’s World, Bicycling, and Women’s Running. ======================================== Get the Book: The Comeback Quotient What’s the secret to a great comeback? Everyone loves a great comeback. In The Comeback Quotient, bestselling sports journalist Matt Fitzgerald examines the science and stories behind some of the most astonishing comebacks in sport. Why are some athletes able to overcome overwhelming odds and rebound stronger than ever—are they superhuman? No, Fitzgerald argues, their power comes from “ultrarealism,” a mental fitness mindset that allows them to fully accept, embrace, and address reality. From triathletes like Mirinda Carfrae to ultrarunners like Rob Krar to rowers, skiers, and cyclists from across the globe, Fitzgerald delves into stories that are not just compelling but constructive, laying out the steps anyone can take to rebound from their own setbacks in sport and in life. Combining gripping tales with compelling research, The Comeback Quotient will change how you perceive the challenges you face, giving you the inspiration and tools to make the next great comeback you witness your own. “Fitzgerald has been writing about the psychology of endurance performance for more than a decade and is one of the pioneers in terms of trying to take this body of research out of the laboratory and into the field for everyone to try.” —Runner’s World “The Comeback Quotient provides elite-tested mental strategies for loving the comeback more than hating the setback.” —Jim Afremow, PhD, author of The Champion’s Mind ====================== Request to Join the FREE Meredith Atwood Community & Coaching https://meredith-atwood-coaching.mn.co/ ====================== Buy Meredith’s Books: The Year of No Nonsense https://amzn.to/3su5qWp Triathlon for the Every Woman: https://amzn.to/3nOkjiH ======================= Get The InnerU Program! Kia Ora Whanau. This week Matt speaks to Dr John Onate, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at the University of California Davis. John is an accomplished ultra runner, speaker at Rob Krar’s trail running camps, the Western States Endurance Run and UTMB. John is also the medical lead at the Devil’s Thumb aid station at Western States. John was in New Zealand to run the Shotover Moonlight Marathon and Matt had the pleasure to host John in the mighty Riverhead Forest and the repair back to Matt’s whare for a beer and a chat. And what a chat it was, it was an absolute pleasure to discuss mental health and running with a mental health professional. We discuss the benefits and challenges of running in regards to our mental health. We discuss John’s journey in both running and medicine and then proceed to veer all over the map touching on topics relating to running and mental health, concierge medicine, and just what makes us tick, in this entertaining and interesting conversation. Enjoy!
Such a great time connecting with Rob Krar - ultra runner extraordinaire ! Such an amazing story - so many stories really!! Enjoy this conversation with him, as we go over so much of his background, including the triumphs and tribulations - rehabilitation for injuries and dealing with depression. Overcoming that to inspire, and how he makes it through that dark place while running these ultra distance events, and in life!!
Imagine this scenario: You load up your car with everything you need to race both the Leadville 100 MTB race and to run the Leadville 100 running race, which occurs exactly one week after the MTB race. But you're still recovering from an injury so don't really expect to do the run. But you find yourself feeling good after your top-20 finish in the mountain bike race, so decide to do the run. Which you not only complete, but win. By close to two hours over second place. And within ten minutes of an all-time record. That's Rob Krar, and that's what we're talking about in this episode of the GU Energy Labs Pinnacle Podcast.

“I said, ‘No way am I running Western States! That’s 100 miles!’” — Rob Krar, Western States Endurance Run winner 2014 Rob Krar is one of the kings of ultra running. He was a middle-distance runner through college, but then threw his running shoes in the trash, insisting he was done with running forever. Famous last words: Though Rob did take a break from running (during which time he worked grueling 12-hour graveyard shifts as a pharmacist), he eventually returned to the sport in a big way — as an ultramarathoner. He has won the most prestigious and competitive ultras, including Western States, Leadville, Run Rabbit Run, and a handful of North Face Endurance Challenge races, to name just a few. Rob is also a vocal advocate for mental health, and on this episode he opens up about his struggles with depression. Rob lives in Flagstaff, AZ, with his wife and fellow ultra runner, Christina. Rob Krar is a special breed of human being. It's not only because he was crowned Ultra-Runner of the year in both 2013 and 2014, has won the Western States multiple times, or excels in Ski Mountaineering around the world during his off-season. Rob's inspiring energy and sense of calm is easily conveyed behind his beard and crystal blue eyes. It's that energy that propelled him to setting the World Record of the Fastest Known Time (FKT) of the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim and that drives him to take on challenges at the hardest running races across the globe. Rob was a successful triathlete as a junior, representing Canada twice at the World Championships. He was working as a night Pharmacist for years before transitioning to full-time professional ultra-running. This transparent conversation with Rob delves into the darkness of depression and how running and the support of his beloved wife, Christina have helped him tackle his demons. Rob goes into detail about his mindset around running 100 miles at a time, his thoughts and personal approach to failure, and how to view pain and dark places.
