I met Ben Moon years back at Burning Man. He was carrying a five-gallon bottle of urine, and I was not entirely sober. Since then, I've admired his work from respectful a distance, (his IG is worth a stalk). I was very grateful to cross paths with him again for this podcast. This time, he held a kombucha and I was reasonably sober.Ben is an adventure, lifestyle, and portrait photographer whose vibrant images have graced the pages of Patagonia catalogues for the past 18 years.  In recent years, he has shifted his focus to filmmaking. In 2015, he founded his production company, Moonhouse as a platform for collaboration with friends and creatives to bring a wide range of thought-provoking, impactful and cinematically beautiful stories to life on-screen. As a director, Ben's unique ability to connect with his subjects paired with the talent and experience for visual storytelling allow him to bring a high level of emotional and visual depth to his films. Surviving colorectal cancer in his 20s inspired Ben to develop a deeper connection to others and the natural world and gradually shifted his artistic focus from capturing the pursuit of adventure to telling nuanced human stories that have inspired and impacted millions worldwide.  Most notably, he told his own story about his journey with colorectal cancer and his special relationship with his dog, Denali in the viral short film, Denali. Ben currently resides on the Oregon coast where, in addition to his film and photo work, he is building a house and just published a personal memoir called "Denali: A Man, a Dog, and the Friendship of a Lifetime" on Penguin Books about his journey with cancer and his life with Denali. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? Adventure and action are commonplace for this week's podcast guest, Dailyn Matthews, a stunt woman and adventure photographer. She explains to host, Sue Stockdale about the mindset and degree of preparation required to appear on set ready to be in a fight scene, car chase or plunge headfirst into a tank of water wearing a strait jacket.Going to extremes is also the unique flavour in Dailyn's other career as an adventure photographer. With a camera in hand since she was 18, Dailyn uses her lens to harness the magic of the wilderness she so adores. The enthusiasm she brings to this medium is the same vibe that powers her career as a stunt performer. Today's guest, adventurer and photographer Oscar Manguy of Finland, epitomizes the philosophy of ‘fast and light', he's as comfortable sleeping in a hammock under a tarp as he is in a King sized bed…in fact probably more so.He's been running expeditions into the wilderness, from the Arctic to Baja, since he was 16 years old….and lives with his wife in in eastern Finland, In a Cabin on a lake, off the grid, no electricity or running water, compost toilets, their drinking water comes from springs or from the lake….As a professional wildlife and wilderness photographer and cameraman, his Cadillac is his kayak…. A casual gander at Oscar's Instagram will reveal photos of terrifyingly massive bears fighting, a transcendent moonrise over serene waters….towering glaciers, adorable penguin chicks, smiling faces, lots of smiling faces, & kayaks and mesmerizing images of figures standing before the Aurora BorealisI  wondered, how a professional photographer can capture such perfection when working out of a skinny kayak….well, he's fast and light….HERE'S MY CONVERSATION WITH OSCAR MANGUY OF FINLAND FROM HIS CABIN ON A LAKE….AND, YOU MIGHT wonder how he gets a telephone or wifi signal out there? The entire country of Finland has 4G….it's everywhere, even out in the wilderness….Oscar, despite all the comforts of being able to do an Instagram post from a remote island in the middle of nowhere,  KNOWS how to get things done under THE MOST austere conditions….You'll want to take note about how he lightens the load, especially his toothpaste trick for long journeys….

This week we get the opportunity to talk with adventure photographer Scott Rokis! Over the last few years Scott has been able to capture the stories of thousands of athletes all around the country as they have participated in some totally epic events. He has been the photographer for Destination Trail's 200 milers and was recently at Aravaipa Running's inaugural Cocodona 250. In this episode we focus mostly on Scott's experience working an aid station and capturing photos up in Alaska at the Iditarod Trail Invitational. In what ways did he try to show the vastness of Alaska, what stories of individual racers was he able to tell, and how did that experience test his photography skills. We also talk about what led him to this career (we both grew up about 30 minutes away from each other on the Mississippi River!!), how he battled self doubt and confronted all the obstacles that he faced as he pursued his dream job. This is a really good one and I hope you all enjoy it!!
