In this deeply moving episode of Something Bigger, we sit down with acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and actor Rukmini Vijayakumar. Together, we explore the intense discipline of classical Indian dance and discover how the ultimate mastery of movement requires the absolute surrender of the ego.Rukmini opens up about her grueling training regimen, practicing eight hours a day, six days a week and explains how dance evolved from a physical language into her ultimate spiritual anchor. We dive into the true meaning of bhakti (devotion) as a reverence for all creation, break down the complex polyrhythmic mathematics of Bharatanatyam, and discuss how the ancient concept of rasa (aesthetic emotion) allows an audience to experience true emotional catharsis. Whether you are an artist, an athlete, or someone seeking deeper presence, Rukmini's insights offer a masterclass on how to transition from the structure of discipline to the freedom of flow in daily life.About the Guest:Rukmini Vijayakumar is one of India's most celebrated classical dancers, choreographers, and the artistic director of the Raadha Kalpa Dance Company. Known for her striking stage presence and rigorous adherence to technique, she has performed on prestigious stages worldwide. Beyond classical dance, Rukmini holds a degree in ballet and modern dance, has starred in major Indian feature films, and is a passionate advocate for fitness, yoga, and free-diving.HighlightsThe Dissolution of the Ego: True artistic mastery occurs when the performer entirely ceases to exist on stage. The audience claps not for the individual's ego, but because the individual stepped aside to let the dance flow entirely through them. The Mathematics of Movement: Far from just ethnic expression, Bharatanatyam relies on an incredibly sophisticated, polyrhythmic structure where the feet, the music, and the percussion operate on entirely different, overlapping mathematical cycles.Devotion as Life, Not Ritual: Within Indian classical arts, bhakti (devotion) is often misunderstood as simple temple worship. In reality, it represents a deep, unwavering reverence for the divinity present in all aspects of creation, nature, and human connection. The Non-Linear Path of Discipline: Training isn't a straight line upward. True discipline is an oscillation, progressing forward, only to willingly return to the basics over and over again to build a wider, more stable foundation.Finding Flow Through Anchor Routines: Entering a "flow state" requires a highly consistent mental and physical baseline. By anchoring the brain with tangible, detailed focus points, we can quiet future anxieties and unlock spontaneous creativity.Timestamps(0:00) – Beginning of the Episode(0:50) – 38 Years Of Practice: What Dance Teaches You About Life(4:10) – Training 8 Hours A Day, 6 Days A Week For Over 15 Years(7:35) – What Is Bharatanatyam Really About?(15:13) – The Purpose Of Art: Making People Forget Their Heaviness(17:22) – How A Performer Makes You Cry Over Something You Know Isn't Real(18:35) – Rasa: The Ancient Science Of Emotional Catharsis(21:47) – Why The West Doesn't Understand Indian Classical Dance(25:57) – What Makes Bharatanatyam So Demanding And Complex(29:50) – Why Physicality Is Only Part Of The Dance(36:01) – The Teacher Who Brought Thousand-Year-Old Movements Back To Life(38:28) – How Her Mom And Dad Each Shaped Her Differently(43:25) – What Spiritualists Mean When They Say "Let The Emotion Pass Through You"(52:11) – The Two Things That Bring You Into The Present Moment(1:08:22) – When The Ego Ceases To Exist: Dance As Surrender(1:13:04) – How To Get Into Flow - Lessons From 38 Years Of Performance(1:17:03) – Finding An Internal Sense Of Rhythm And Purpose(1:17:56) – Live Bharatanatyam Demonstration(1:20:10) – The End

A love story, across timelines as one woman tries to reach the other through the words she left behind. In this episode, Tara sits down with Tarana Hussain Khan, writer and food historian, to talk about her novel The Courtesan, Her Lover and I, a book that moves between two women and their love stories separated by a century, bound together by letters that almost didn't survive. The conversation explores how Tarana first discovered Daag's letters to Hijab in archival material and why Hijab became such an enigma to her. Through Hijab's story, they get into the larger world of Tawaifs and the extraordinary dichotomy of women who were the most culturally significant of their time, yet whose writings were lost, romanticised, or dismissed. Through the parallel journeys of Hijab and Rukmini, a contemporary aspiring writer, they also unpack the realities of becoming a woman writer in India today, with Tarana reflecting her own insecurities of pursuing writing full-time and her relationships in Rukmini's world and the ways women now have more agency and opportunities than the generations before them. Tarana also opens up about her process in fiction and non-fiction, and the emotional toll of delving into these stories. They discuss Tarana's bold structural choice of writing Hijab's entire narrative in second person to let Rukmini speak directly to Hijab across centuries, questioning the silences left by history.Press play to be transported to a world of poetry, music and a love story of epic proportions. Books mentioned in this episode: Deg to Dastarkhan by Tarana HussainLast of the Earth by Deepa AnnaparaApplications for The Bound Publishing Course 2026 are now open. The Bound Publishing Course is a 3-month intensive course on book, magazine, and digital publishing. Srimad Bhagavatam [Bhagwat Katha] – Part 45 | Swami Mukundananda  Swamiji narrates the divine marriage of Shree Krishna and Rukmini, revealing the spiritual truth that God responds to the call of pure devotion. Rukmini, the princess of Vidarbha, was deeply devoted to Krishna and longed to be united with Him. Though her family arranged her marriage to Shishupala, she wrote a heartfelt letter to Krishna, surrendering herself completely and pleading for His protection.  Krishna, moved by her unwavering love, arrived in Vidarbha on the day of the wedding. In a miraculous display of divine power, He lifted Rukmini onto His chariot and carried her away, defeating the opposing kings. This leela shows that God never abandons those who surrender to Him with faith and devotion.  Swamiji emphasizes that Rukmini's devotion was not based on fear or duty but on pure, unconditional love. Her faith was rewarded by Krishna Himself, who accepted her as His eternal consort. This leela teaches that when devotion is sincere and selfless, the Lord personally intervenes to protect and fulfill the devotee's heart's desire.  The union of Krishna and Rukmini is not just a historical event but a spiritual truth: God answers true love. It inspires devotees to cultivate unwavering faith, knowing that the Lord always responds to pure devotion and accepts the soul that surrenders wholeheartedly.  About Swami Mukundananda:    Swami Mukundananda is a renowned spiritual leader, Vedic scholar, Bhakti saint, best‑selling author, and an international authority on the subject of mind management. He is the founder of the unique yogic system called JKYog. Swamiji holds distinguished degrees in Engineering and Management from IIT and IIM. Having taken the renounced order of life (sanyas), he is the senior disciple of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, and has been sharing Vedic wisdom across the globe for decades.

Today, we are learning from Rukmini Iyer. Rukmini is a leadership and organisational transformation consultant and peacebuilder with over two decades of global experience. She works at the intersection of conscious leadership, peacebuilding, and systems change, weaving in ecocentric and decolonial perspectives. She is the founder of Exult! Solutions, a practice dedicated to meaningful, values-driven change, and serves on the International Board of Creators of Peace. Her facilitation integrates the SDGs and IDGs, the Work That Reconnects, and narrative and somatic practices, supporting communities, organisations, and movements worldwide. A Rotary Peace Fellow and Vital Voices Fellow, she is committed to helping people and systems make decisions that nurture wellbeing, equity, and planetary balance. Let's get started... In this conversation with Rukmini Iyer, I learned: 00:00 Intro 02:20 Explanation of why I want to learn more about colonization and decolonization of the Inner Development Goals. 06:30 Starting with peacebuilding and her experience in this work, she concentrates on dialogue and peace education. 09:30 Gandhi probably drew his inspiration for his non-violent way of living from the Jain philosophy of ahiṃsā. 11:05 Peace-building is a lot about recalling the possibility of non-violence for Rukmini. 11:50 Violence is part of life. It is natural, but is it in the service of life? 16:05 The tendency of humans to take power over others using violence, and at the same time have the free will to choose not to exercise that tendency. 16:30 One of the earliest forms of colonization is agriculture. We decided to settle on a piece of land and to make it grow what I want it to grow. 18:25 All of human history has been about exploring our relationship with power. Power over vs power with. 20:35 Examining land ownership from a different perspective. 22:45 What we call resources, the indigenous people call relatives. 25:05 Rituals that remind us that we are in a relationship with the planet, the cosmos, the plants and animals. 30:15 We need a complement to the SDGs, which speaks to the internal aspects of our psyche. That is why inner development is of great importance to Rukmini. 34:30 Working with frameworks like the Sustainable Development Goals is a luxury. 36:25 To repair our relationship with life through inner development. 37:15 The main points of why there is colonization in the IDG framework and organisation - see links to resources below 44:20 The business model that makes her work accessible. 47:40 We have given a lot of power away to money. 48:50 Start sensing into the patterns of colonization. 51:50 An empowering connotation around colonization. 53:10 Creating localized versions of the IDG framework. 54:10 We allow ourselves to be colonized by technology (companies). We colonize our children. 57:35 The work of Joanna Macy - the work that reconnects. 1:04:05 The sense of guilt about colonization from the past does not serve anyone. 1:06:00 To open up the umbrella, bring in those who do not have shade.
