We swear to god, we haven't turned into a sports podcast (despite all Matt's efforts). But it turns out there's a not-insignificant intersection between the World Cup, democracy, and authoritarianism. So we invited Alex Shephard—a senior editor and writer at the New Republic and founder of Golden Goal, a literary magazine about the 2026 World Cup—to walk us through the dramas, controversies, and political implications of the global tournament that's kicking off this week. Whether you're obsessed with sports, like Matt, or have barely heard of them, like Aaron, there's something in this conversation for you.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

On this episode of The Beautiful Idea, we speak with long-running journalist and researcher Chris Mathias on his new book, "To Catch a Fascist: The Fight to Expose the Radical Right."In the book, Mathias profiles multiple antifascist researchers and activists, shinning a light on grassroots opposition to fascism and the everyday people that put themselves in harms way to stand up to violent white supremacists.During our discussion, we talk about several of the people profiled in the book, as well as how many organizers and researchers are now turning their attention on ICE. We also talk about how the GOP has consumed much of the existing white nationalist movement, what happens to fascist street formations with Trump in power, and how journalists, communities, and organizers can respond.https://bsky.app/profile/letsgomathias.bsky.socialhttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/30/antifa-unmasking-iceFollow Chris and his reporting here on BlueSky and be sure to check out this piece at the Guardian about how antifascist sleuths are now turning their attention to unmasking ICE agents.https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/To-Catch-a-Fascist/Christopher-Mathias/9781668034767

Today we are joined by Mattie Fitch, Associate Professor at Marymount University and author of The People, The Workers and the Citizens: Antifascist Cultures and the Popular Front in France, 1934-1939 (Routledge, 2026). In our conversation, we discussed the way that antifascist culture undergirded the French Popular Front, the tensions between the Communists, Socialists, and Radical antifascist projects, and the ways that each Popular Front party of defined “the people.” In The People, The Workers and the Citizens, Fitch explores Popular Front antifascist programs and the cultural work that illuminated their diverse visions for a “people's government.” The book is thematic: in her first chapter, Fitch examines the Communists' Maison de la Culture and the Fédération musicale populaire. The communist's efforts to produce a worker's culture successfully mobilized French national symbols in novel ways but had difficulties navigating between high and low culture. By contrast, chapter 2 centres on Jean Zay and the Radicals. Zay's influence abounded and he was willing to work with anyone in the Popular Front to see cultural access extended to all French citizens. Yet his vision of a civic nationhood clashed with his Communist and Socialist allies who privileged workers. The most enigmatic were the Socialists. Although they were the largest party in the French National Assembly, Leon Blum's party struggled to articulate an antifascist program that encompassed all of their voters. Their pacifism proved a problem in the context of a rising Nazi Germany, and they were squeezed between the increasing nationalism of the French Communists and the Radicals' appeal to the working class. Fitch's analysis moves beyond earlier studies that focus mostly (or only) on Paris. In chapters 4 and 5, she looks at the antifascist activities of politicians in Marseille and Rouen and finds two very different Popular Fronts at work in the regions. In Marseille, working class politics dominate and an authentic endogenous Popular Front culture precedes directives from the capital. While in Rouen, extremely moderate Radicals battle working class activists on the other side of town. Fitch's work is compelling and shines a new light on the history of the Popular Front. It will be of interest to scholars of modern France and political culture. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, we're sharing a conversation with Nina at Anarchist Black Cross Dresden to speak about the political landscape in Germany, the Antifa Ost and Budapest Komplex cases and the impacts on anti-repression work in Germany since the Trump administration's declaration that a group they're calling Antifa Ost be added to the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations that is kept by the US State Department. This sits alongside the US government prosecuting the Prairieland case in Texas that was the subject of our prior episode, and could be one step further toward an official declaration of war on Antifa in the US, whatever that means exactly. We really feel that these cases are important to keep up on as the administration telegraphs it's bizarre but frightening counterinsurgency strategies. 4. Headline: Challenging Fascism with Sinclair Lewis Guest Author: James Shapiro When Hollywoodrefused to film Sinclair Lewis's anti-fascist novel *It Can't Happen Here* due to censorship and foreign market fears, the Federal Theater stepped in. Hallie Flanagan secured the rights and staged the production simultaneously in twenty cities, proving that live theater could match the national reach of movies. The play served as a stark warning against the rise of domestic and foreign dictatorships. Despite having to navigate local political sensitivities and avoid accusations of being a "commercial theater" competitor, the production became a massive cultural success. James Shapiro recounts how the Federal Theater simultaneously staged Sinclair Lewis's anti-fascist play It Can't Happen Here across American cities after Hollywood studios rejected the film adaptation.
James Shapiro details Welles's innovative Voodoo Macbeth, its anti-fascist themes, the racial condescension of white critics, and the production's massive success and subsequent national tour across America.
The word fascism gets tossed around a lot these days, but what does that term even mean, and what does it mean to call, for instance, the Trump regime fascist as opposed to, or in addition to, authoritarian, or autocratic? And what about terms like eco-fascism or petro-fascism?Last fall I interviewed University of Oregon Professor Sarah Wald and we touched on the term ‘eco-fascism'. That sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole on that term and the dangerous myths that many environmentalists may be unwittingly buying into.Sarah was kind enough to connect me with the Anti-Creep Climate Initiative, a collective working to expose eco-fascism ideas and myths that permeate our culture and media.Maybe this sounds like an esoteric subject, but I think it has real world importance, because our beliefs and actions are often shaped by stories and myths that are so subconsciously ingrained in us, they become like the air we breathe. My guests are two of the co-founders of the Anti-Creep Initiative, co-presidents of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment, and professors at the University of Connecticut, April Anson and Alex Menrisky. Please note: This episode was recorded on Friday, January 23 2026. Recently, Dog-Eared Books shared a reading list designed to help deepen our understanding of fascism, full of titles we believe are essential for thoughtful learning. We paired that list with a quote from George Orwell's 1984 as part of a window display at the store, and the response was overwhelming. Comments poured in from across the country and around the world. Today, we're taking a closer look at that reading list of both fiction and nonfiction books, and reflecting on why their ideas remain so urgent and important. ! JOIN SHERI HORN HASAN @ https://www.karmicevolution.com/astrologically-speaking FOR THIS WEEK'S “ASTROLOGICALLY SPEAKING!” PODCAST WHICH DROPS OCTOBER 17!As we wax now toward the Libra New Moon on October 21, we can see that the Libra Sun opposes wounded healer Chiron, & Eris, the dwarf planet of chaos, discord, & strife. And that this opposition is forming a square to Jupiter as it waxes toward an opposition to Pluto. That this is occurring as we head into the nationwide No Kings protest day on October 18 is troublesome to say the least. Republican governors from Texas, Virginia, & Missouri have already called up their National Guard in preparation for these protests. And that means, even before the Libra New Moon hits on Tuesday, October 21, that protesters must call upon their inner Libran archetype to emphasize their peacefulness rather than fall prey to any coercive actions by others who try to make them respond otherwise (read: aggressively.)Billed as the largest protest in American history, millions will gather in all 50 states to protest the current policies ordered by President Trump & his administration since he took office in January 2025. The caution here is not to get sucked in to losing one's cool, as the heavens are telling us that even the slightest provocation might land one in trouble now.Given that political rhetoric has coarsened to the point of becoming radicalized since Mercury, the god of communication, entered Pluto-ruled Scorpio on October 6, now is not the time to release anger in any way other than verbally. However, the tension increases since Mercury will join Mars in Scorpio exact late on October 19/early October 20—depending on your time zone--making this waxing energy extremely strong on October 18's No Kings day. Take this as a warning not to lose your cool now, whether you're part of these protests or engaged in any other dispute personally with those with whom you disagree. Rather, as stated, channel your inner Libran archetype to simply stay calm & carry on! GIVE ME THE MAN & I WILL FIND THE CRIMEMeanwhile, more vindictive prosecutions were announced this past week as we head toward the Libra New Moon on October 21. The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ), which has been weaponized against Donald Trump's perceived enemies—as Attorney General Pam Bondi & Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche now serve as his personal lawyers--indicted former National Security Advisor John Bolton accusing him of releasing classified information to unauthorized individuals.Whether the charges stick or not, the fact that Trump has stated publicly that he's going after his “enemies” & is hell bent on “retribution” is clearly reflected by the waxing Mercury/Mars energy in Scorpio now. Trump has already forced his DoJ to indict former FBI Director James Comey, NY Attorney General Letitia James, & District Attorney Fani Will of Fulton Country, Georgia, (& others) against experienced DoJ attorneys' advice & with little evidence. “Vindictive prosecution” is a great way to define not only the Mercury/Mars conjunction, but also the Sun waxing toward its exact square to Pluto on October 24 & Jupiter's current out of sign opposition to Pluto. All of those smell of “retribution” against one's enemies through legal recourse. The Scorpionic & Plutonic nature of these aspects, however, reek of underhanded methods to achieve one's goals. And that is part & parcel of what the No Kings day protests are about. In the short-term, however, it's clear that the U.S. Government shutdown is on peoples' minds as well, as the fight between the two congressional parties--where one refuses to negotiate & compromise with the other--continues.Why? Because the capitalist-oriented GOP majority in Congress believe they are being “responsible” by cutting the federal budget's Medicaid & Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies—along with a host of other aid to poorer citizens--to offset the growing federal deficit. However, they fail to acknowledge (though clearly they MUST realize) that part of the reason for the expanding budget deficit is due to the Big Ugly Bill they passed at the behest of Donald Trump in July which granted huge tax relief to the richest among us in the country. At the same time, the same people who refuse to compromise accuse anyone who disagrees with them—particularly the millions of citizens (many their own constituents) scheduled to protest on October 18--of being members of Antifa.Woe to the poor soul who doesn't have the intellectual capacity to understand that Antifa stands for ANTI FASCIST. Or that this country has been anti-fascist to its core, particularly since its citizens fought & died during WWII against the FACIST Nazis in Germany. Apparently, they never read George Orwell's “1984,” let alone understand that Antifa is NOT an actual organization. Rather, it's simply a non-existent group made up by Trump & Republicans, labeled "terrorists," & designed to attack liberals or anyone who disagrees with them.K, there's a lot more Astro News You Can Use—including about the upcoming Libra New Moon, & how we're definitely in the throes of the fight for democracy since U.S. Pluto Return (& no, it wasn't a one-off aspect here today, gone tomorrow!)--in this week's podcast, so be sure to tune in starting today @ https://www.karmicevolution.com/astrologically-speaking Till then, namaste…
Hey everyone… special drop today: the inaugural episode of Matthew's new side project, Antifascist Dad Podcast. Matthew sits down with songwriter Nathan Evans Fox to talk about kinship, Appalachia, and the viral hymn that's resonating across communities. Nathan shares the roots of his concept of yallidarity—solidarity rooted in labor, joy, food, music, and taking care of one another. They discuss the myths and realities of Appalachia, the erasure of labor history, and the dangers of “bootstrap” individualism. Nathan tells about his upbringing in fringe charismatic churches, the connections between charismatic Christianity and Trump-style politics, and how faith traditions can nurture resilience—or be co-opted by empire. They dig into Nathan's viral “Hillbilly Hymn”: why the cops disappear when Jesus returns, why kinship always beats bootstraps, and how to imagine an abolitionist future that doesn't erase culture but reorients it toward joy, justice, and care. All theme music by the amazing www.kalliemarie.com. Full episode on Patreon Part 2 moves from Christofascist spectacle to the “mushy middle” of liberal Christianity—why it so often blesses order over justice and falters when fascism rises. Drawing on MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail, Reggie Williams's Bonhoeffer's Black Jesus, and lived experience inside white urban churches, he traces how bureaucratic piety, respectability politics, and spiritual bypassing drain the Gospel of conduct and courage—what Bonhoeffer called a “funeral wreath” laid on the culture. How do institutions become procedurally compassionate yet politically inert? Matthew weaves in memories of global South Christian art, Denys Arcand's Jesus of Montréal, and the everyday service-industry grind of parish life to show how care without solidarity becomes maintenance—while Black Jesus points to co-suffering, mutual aid, and material resistance. Touching grass means moving from abstraction to accompaniment and from decorum to defense. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this first installment of Antifascist Christianity: Black Jesus, Matthew revisits Dietrich Bonhoeffer's journey from the theological classrooms of Berlin to the Black churches of Harlem — where he encountered a Jesus entirely unlike the imperial figure of his upbringing. Bonhoeffer arrived in New York a servant of white European Christendom, and left transformed by the radical, suffering, and liberatory presence of Black Jesus. Matthew connects Bonhoeffer's awakening to today's spectacle of white nationalism in worship — from the triumphalist religion on display at Charlie Kirk's memorial to the enduring cultural power of “white Jesus” as theology for empire. Drawing on Reggie Williams's Bonhoeffer's Black Jesus, Cedric Robinson's Black Marxism, and Jeanelle Hope and Bill Mullen's The Black Antifascist Tradition, the episode traces how colonialism created a Christ built to bless domination, and how the Black church reclaimed him through solidarity, suffering, and resistance. The contrast between the fortress hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God and the spiritual Were You There becomes the turning point in Bonhoeffer's faith — from triumph to trembling, from power to empathy. Part 2, out Monday on Patreon, explores how liberal Christianity tried to stand between these poles, and why it failed. Show Notes Hope, Jeanelle K., and Bill V. Mullen. The term ‘Antifa' derives from the German word for Antifascist — and the constellation of resistance movements largely created as a response to Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Today, Antifa describes a decentralized anti-fascist movement with local groups and unaffiliated activists all over the world. Many became aware of Antifascist organizing following Antifa's intervention at the white supremacist ‘Unite The Right' rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. For the last decade, Antifa has come to symbolize progressive protest and movement building – engaging in doxxing,, property destruction, and street-level physical confrontations. In late September of this year, U.S. President Donald Trump officially designated Antifa a domestic terror organization. Mark Bray is an academic, scholar of European history and radicalism, and the author of several books including ‘ANTIFA — the anti fascist handbook.' He joins the show to discuss the rise of antifascist movements from the 1930s to today, and why Trump's terror designation recalls authoritarian crackdowns through history, both in the U.S., Canada and abroad. https://thecommunists.org/2025/09/01/news/history/remembering-china-role-global-antifascist-war-ww2/ China's enormous sacrifices during WW2 and its epic contribution to the defeat of fascism is routinely overlooked, as is the wider significance of the war in the east. The Chinese people's titanic struggle against Japanese imperialism played a vital part in the antifascist victory in WW2. Led by the communists, including revolutionary forces from Korea, this struggle also laid the groundwork for the victory of the Chinese Revolution in 1949, and for a string of other democratic and socialist revolutions that took place in east Asia in the following period. Making Antifascist War: The International Brigades' Transnational Encounters with Civil-War Spain, 1936-1939 (Cambridge UP, 2025) is a study of the 35,000 antifascists who joined the International Brigades in order to defend the Second Spanish Republic and of their encounters with civil-war Spain. Dr. Adrian Pole offers the first in-depth history of the rich array of cross-cultural encounters which emerged between the multinational soldiers of all five International Brigades and the people, places, politics and culture of the country which accommodated them for almost three years of civil war. He sets out to recover the place of these encounters within the making, imagining and running of a transnational fighting force, showing how they influenced the volunteers' experiences and emotions, underlined their ideas and identities, informed their motivations and actions, and ultimately underpinned their ability to imagine, wage and justify the war. In doing so, he demonstrates how they enabled thousands of transnational actors to define a deeply contentious conflict in their own very particular terms. Learn more about your ad choices. The second installment in a two-part exploration of Simon(e) Weil for the ongoing Antifascist Christianity series and the Antifascist Woodshed project. At the heart of the episode is Weil's terse, luminous definition of love—“belief in the existence of other human beings as such”—and Richard Gilman-Opalsky's unpacking of how that love rejects projections and demands the generosity of attention, shared joys and miseries, and a deprivatized ethic of care. Matthew contrasts this with caricatures of Weil as an ascetic or body-denier, arguing instead for a portrait of a neurodivergent activist whose stressed nervous system made hypocrisy intolerable and whose spirituality emerged from embodied encounters. Weil presented a lot of scrambling data—gender nonconformity, ambivalent sexuality, eating and touch aversions, migraines and hypergraphia. Theological and philosophical commentators often pathologize or misread Weil, while sidestepping their autism. As for Weil's Christianity: it wasn't about churchly allegiance but an experiential, anti-hypocrisy faith that found Jesus in direct action and in taking liturgical symbols seriously enough to live them. For Weil, “this is my body” became a present-tense statement of antifascist solidarity: the breaking and sharing of bread and body as an F-you to the imperials, and a call to communal repair. Matthew begins a two-part exploration of Simone Weil—French philosopher, mystic, and antifascist activist—through the lens of autism, embodiment, and political courage. Following the earlier Antifascist Christianity Woodshed series on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, this installment positions Weil as a kind of spiritual auntie to Greta Thunberg, whose uncompromising honesty, rooted in autistic perception, continues to disrupt fascist, capitalist, and liberal narrative. Matthew traces Weil's journey from childhood acts of solidarity, like giving up sugar during WW1, to her immersion in factory labor, revolutionary syndicalism, and frontline service in the Spanish Civil War. Weil's refusal of privilege and their lifelong impulse to take on suffering emerge as core features of both her philosophy and her autistic experience. They also stood up to Leon Trotsky, calling out Soviet authoritarianism long before its collapse. Weil can be understood not only through the posthumous notebooks and essays that editors and institutions reshaped into seventeen volumes, but through the lived reality of their embodied resistance. Their ideas remain striking: the notion of attention as the rarest form of generosity; the insistence that obligations come before rights; the practice of “decreation” as a release of ego in the service of love; and the “need for roots” as an antifascist alternative to blood-and-soil nationalism. Part 2 of this series drops Monday on Patreon, where Matthew goes deeper into Weil's autistic traits, their spiritual life, and how their philosophy continues to confront liberalism and fascism alike. Charlie Kirk shaped modern conservatism and reached youth in ways no one else could—and that's precisely what made him so dangerous to the Left. The trailblazing 31-year-old activist and commentator who founded Turning Point USA was regularly smeared as a “fascist,” a “Nazi,” and a “threat to democracy” by the Left. It was only a matter of time until a crazed person put those words into action. On today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson pays tribute to Kirk and explains how his death is more than just a personal loss; it signals a dangerous new era where political violence is becoming normalized. “ He connected with people. He had a podcast. He was an extemporaneous speaker. He could ad lib. He wrote columns. He was fearless. He was—he registered voters. He might have been more responsible for winning key states than any other political activists in the 2024 election. I don't think anybody in our generation—I'm speaking my generation—could have done what he did. “ We are legitimizing political violence. If you call someone day after day after day, "white, white, white, white"; "racist, racist, racist"; "fascist, fascist, fascist"; "Nazi, Nazi, Nazi"—we hear that from Joy Reid. We see it on "The View." We see it on MSNBC. Even just seconds after Charlie died, we had Matthew Dowd go on and basically said that he got what he deserved because he was an extremist, etc., and he and you "live by the sword, die by the sword" sort of argument he used.”

Matthew recounts the story of a young, hoity-toity soft-nationalist German theologian named Dietrich Bonhoeffer who discovered the radical soul of antifascism by hanging out in a Black Baptist church in Harlem in 1930. He came to the US believing in the white Jesus of European empire, but left enthralled by the Black Jesus of the oppressed. Back in Germany, he played 78s of spirituals and gospel tunes for the students of his illegal seminaries as he and other members of the Confessing Church issued some of the earliest formal rebukes to the Reich.
