Welcome to Pass Around the Smile's first guest episode with the one and only, Sarah Davidson. You may know her as Spoonful of Sarah, or the woman behind Seize the Yay where through her podcast and book she effortlessly guides and inspires with uplifting, honest and thought provoking content. Sarah is witty, intelligent, and from my eyes, one of the most inspiring business women in Australia who went from the corporate world as a lawyer, to funtrepreneur when she founded Matcha Maiden and Matcha Mylkbar.I received a very supportive and encouraging email from Sarah at the beginning of my podcasting journey, so I thought what better way to begin this episode than chatting about her quote, ‘success doesn't halve when you share it, it doubles.'We dive into Sarah's leap from what was expected to be her long term career as a lawyer to the unknowns of starting a business - with all the fears, blocks and limiting beliefs which came along the way. Sarah has a really refreshing approach as we discuss comparison and imposter syndrome and how we can combat it, so it doesn't take away our inner power. We finish the episode chatting about growth and how we just don't know when the seeds we are planting will bloom! Your hard work WILL pay off in the way that is right for you and your unique path.Sarah's links below:View Sarah's website here!Find Sarah on Instagram here!@seize_the_yay @spoonful_of_sarah Cleo's links below:View my website here! Today I am joined by the wonderful Sarah Davidson - founder of Matcha Maiden, Matcha Mylkbar & host of the Seize The Yay podcast. I have a been a big fan of Sarah's for some time now and I love her even more after this interview (total fan girl moment for me)! Today we chat about how Sarah got to where she is today, the happy accidents & sliding doors moment that have landed her in many unforeseen but amazing situations as well as how the entire Seize The Yay concept came to be. In and amongst this, a chat about the danger zone a lot of us are in - the zone where we won't really question what we are doing, unless we are actively unhappy. She refers to this as the autopilot circuit and gives us her tips on how to break this and find true purpose - even if we don't change a thing. We also chat about Seizing Your NAY which is equally as important as the yay, finding your why, rewiring failures as movement forwards and her tips on meaningful self care.We end with a chat about the importance of PLAY & why dreaming big needs to be small enough so you can actually start.I can't wait for you to tune into this one - I know you will love it as much as me! Sarah began her working life as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer at a leading international law firm. While she enjoyed several years building strong professional foundations, she found it increasingly challenging to reconcile the all-consuming corporate lifestyle with her personal passions for health, wellbeing, creativity and adventure. In pursuit of balance, Sarah and her partner started Matcha Maiden closing a gap they discovered in the health food market for matcha green tea powder. Matcha is now one of the world's premier health food trends and Match Maiden leading the way with a very bright (green) future ahead. Sarah has now hung up the suits and heels to step into the business full time. In 2016, the matcha mission developed into a physical venue and cutting edge cafe, Matcha Mylkbar, which is taking the food world by storm. Sarah now splits her time between the two businesses and is thoroughly enjoying life as a full time funtrepreneur. She has also started a podcast, Seize the Yay, which investigates the difference between success and happiness, the importance of cultivating "joy" and showcases the down to earth, human side of her diverse and esteemed guests. The podcast became a book in 2020 and Sarah continues to grow the yayborhood as far and wide as possible. For a second guest this person was exceptional and boy was she both eloquent in her explanations as she was (and is) intelligent!! Spoonful of Sarah / Sarah (Holloway) Davidson is a Lawyer Turned Funtreprenuer and like many other guests I will have on, I was first introduced via one of the challenges I partook in through Body By Finch, which she was an expert guest on. Anddd the rest is history!! Sarah is the one and only who brought MATCHA into the mainstream markets of Australia where it was neither easily accessible nor recognised, naming it Matcha Maiden. Then went onto launching a Melbourne cafe dedicated to all things Matcha (Mylkbar). Not to mention has a Spoonful of Sarah forum, is an Author, has a Seize the Yay podcast and merchandise owner which includes: flipbooks; t-shirts and necklaces!! Since our introduction I had purchased her book and I seriously felt like I was following her life events in symmetry, where her “sliding doors” moments were in fact occurring to me. Not to mention whilst reading I decided to bring this passion project up a notch plus continue to educate myself through this forum which is now called Unearthing Wellbeing. Sarah's humility is emphasised in spades during this podcast whereby she shares anecdotes, advice, and a giggle with me. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to have her on and I hope you enjoy this episode. If you would like to purchase any of her merchandise including her book Seize The Yay the link is here! Use YAYBORHOOD for 10% off everything. To find out what unfolded, tune into this week's episode. Topics covered: imposter syndrome, start-up business, author, seize the yay, matcha maiden, self-doubt, wellbeing, adrenal fatigue, mental health, anxiety, covid19, vulnerabilities, self-care + Follow Sarah Davidson here + Announcements on Insta at @_askelizabeth + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of Unearthing Wellbeing! I really appreciate your support during this new venture of mine. I also hope you took something from the episode in the quest of discovery. Sending love & light, Ask Elizabeth.

Sarah Davidson, Is best summed up by her overarching life philosophy – “seize the yay”. "As for my journey, I started my professional life as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer at a leading international law firm. I enjoyed several years of invaluable learning, development and even exciting travel opportunities and quite enjoyed pretending my life was as glamorous and high-flying as lawyer life appears in Suits. However, I knew early on that the corporate life didn't light my fire and wouldn't be a long-lasting career for me. While my inner geek adored the intellectual gymnastics, the profession and its lifestyle weren't easily reconciled with my personal passions for health, wellbeing, nutrition (I'm a fanatical foodie) and creativity. My chance to “make the jump” popped up sooner than I had imagined, when the “side project” that my partner Nic and I had started as a creative outlet grew itself into a booming business. Out of our own personal frustrations at a gap in the market, we founded an organic matcha green tea company, Matcha Maiden, in late 2014. Within six months, we had grown big enough to draw attention from giant US retailer, Urban Outfitters, who placed a recurring order that could only be fulfilled if one of us went full time. I'm a big fan of trusting the universe and, terrifying as it was, I made the jump into the business that day and we've never looked back. Two years later, our beautiful matcha family is still going strong and has taken on a physical embodiment in our trailblazing café, Matcha Mylkbar, co-founded with dear friends, Mark and Attil Filippelli. If you've seen any crazy green burgers and blue lattes flooding your social media feeds, that was us! While Spoonful of Sarah initially started out as a personal page (mostly dedicated to my all-too-regular foodie adventures), my shift into the entrepreneurial world was accompanied by some happily accidental profile building, so Spoonful is also now “a thing”. This has added speaking gigs, guest articles, content creation, consulting, and more food frolicking to my repertoire and I wake up every single day pinching myself that this is all real life."Follow on Sarah Davidson on Social MediaInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/spoonful_of_sarah/Website - https://www.spoonfulofsarah.com/about-me/Follow The Story Box on Social MediaInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/thestoryboxpodcast/Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/thestoryboxpodcastFacebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/125781678801513YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEXHMRPxW0qoxV8kKjaFdYwIf you enjoyed this episode please subscribe to YouTube & Apple Podcasts, and leave a 5-star positive rating and review over on Apple Podcasts. ""Are you on auto pilot or are you choosing the path you are on?" This week on the podcast I am interviewing one of my nearest and dearest Sarah Davidson (formerly Sarah Holloway). A lady who I certainly consider to be in my inner tribe, quite literally the smartest person I know, fellow lover of verbose responses, 'lawyer turned funtrepreneur' (podcast host + author + entrepreneur) and the Queen of Quotes. This conversation is a reflection of our 12 year relationship, that includes both our willingness to ask the challenging conversations and our spark of joy when we are with each other. We met as eager beaver law students 12 years ago and our paths lined up as corporate lawyers in top tier law firms... before I abandoned the coup to run & speak.... One year later Sarah & her now husband Nic Davidson started Matcha Maiden - an organic matcha green tea company. The brand sky rocketed through the use of social media and Sarah's amazing ability and connection. Within 6 months it gained the attention of US retailed Urban Outfitters - which was the trigger for Sarah to leave her job in law to jumped head and feet first into the business. She is the co-founder of Matcha Mylkbar - a vegan inspired cafe The host of globally renowned podcast Seize the Yay And most recently an author to Seize the Yay. This conversation discusses (amongst many things): •How Sarah revamped her metric of 'success' •How she's reignited the inner child. •Her strengths and weaknesses, including anything confrontational!! •Creating a brand as a reflection of the most authentic representation of her •The learnings from writing her book, including the uncovering of why she's struggled to self manage and say NO to opportunities •Learning how to create milestones and celebrate the small successes •Her mantras of 'Dreaming Big but Planning Small', 'Done is better than perfect' •How to change your default settings Sarah is a huge lover of life, all things yay, flexible thinking, spontaneity and she is a GEM. Sarah Davidson (nee Holloway) is the good friend who finally not only convinced me to create my own podcast but also kindly offered to edit it for me if I took the suggested leap. So… she is largely why Hear me RAW exists. Thank you. In her own words she’s not the best candidate for a short bio (and knowing her as I do she is most deserved of a super long one). She is a serial rambler, over enthusiastic life lover with an abundance of interests, passions, career changes, lifestyle revelations, adventures, hopes and dreams. This was in fact the very first ever episode of Hear me RAW that we recorded together and it was such an immense joy to do so. I’ve left it until Episode seven to actually bring it to you to give a little breathing space between the intro (where she interviewed me…).In this ep, it's Sarah's turn to shine and it's my honour to discuss so candidly so much of her journey which includes the transition from being a high powered lawyer into a world of health, wellbeing and nutrition which ultimately led to Matcha Maiden, Matcha Mylkbar and all the incredible adventures in between. In this generous, open (at often times super funny … we laugh a LOT) conversation Sarah candidly shares so much about:-Being courageous enough to get off the corporate treadmillFinding your passion and how to start a (sometimes accidental) entrepreneurial endeavourThe supply chain (how do you ACTUALLY develop a low risk minimal viable product and just begin)How to overcome the struggle, obstacles and build resilienceBranding, revenue streams, distribution, e*commerce and how to build a solid social followingHow to keep the buzz and excitement alive when you scale and evolveHow to keep functioning through the day – rituals and routines and how to figure out what works for youBeing unafraid to seize your YAY (find ways to put play into your day!!)For anyone wanting to start and scale a business AND still live a life you love, this is an absolute DO NOT MISS episode. I loved every minute and can’t wait to hear what you think. If you love it, leave us a review. We are launching Season 2 with an earnest and insightful conversation with the multi-talented and truly wonderful Sarah Davidson. You may know her as Spoonful of Sarah or as the host of her fabulous podcast, Seize the Yay. Sarah's professional career started as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer for a top tier firm in Melbourne but took a sharp left turn when she suffered a severe bout of adrenal fatigue, which saw her exploring other options. It was from this that her first foray into business was underway, in the creation of Matcha Maiden with her now husband Nic Davidson. Their business exploded onto the market and just one year on, they opened their award-winning plant based café, Matcha Mylkbar. Sarah has achieved so much in her life and career to date and is an absolute delight to chat with. One of the things I love about podcasting and this format, is that the shape of the conversation can change dramatically at any point and you can think you're going to be talking to someone about one particular aspect of their lives and then something entirely different comes out of the energy you each bring on that day. This conversation was the perfect example of that. I thought we were going to dive straight into Sarah's incredible journey as a self-styled funtrepreneur - and while we did explore much of that, the conversation went deep into anxiety and mental health from jump. Sarah's story is inspiring and her warmth and candour is infectious. Oh and if you've ever been curious about what goes on on Richard Branson's private island when no one is looking? Then sit tight and Sarah will give you low down on her exclusive retreat and wild bachelorette party thrown by the man himself! You can connect with Sarah through her website Spoonful of Sarah or through Insta as Spoonful of Sarah or Seize the Yay. Don't forget to check out Matcha Maiden and Matcha Mylkbar while you're at it! As always, your reviews and ratings are very much appreciated, so if you like the show - please let us know! When Sarah Holloway returned from a trip to Africa, she came back with more than memories of an Instagramable adventure. Within days of being home in Melbourne from the trip with her fiancé Nick Davidson, the 30-year-old then lawyer began drastically dropping weight. A few months later she crashed with adrenal fatigue. Doctors to discover she had been suffering with a parasite for months. During her recovery Sarah took a work trip to Hong Kong where she discovered matcha green tea powder. Sarah and her partner Nick became hooked and decided to launch a social media-driven side hustle selling matcha powder, investing just $5000. Just six months after Matcha Maiden launched in 2015, US retailer Urban Outfitters placed a monthly, 3000-package order for six months (selling across their US stores) after discovering the brand on Instagram. Sarah took a leap of faith, and quit her job to focus on the booming business full-time. In 2016 the pair opened a vegan cafe Matcha Mylkbar in Melbourne, Matcha Mylkbar. Sarah has gone on to launch a podcast, Seize The Yay.

Today we cover how we both time manage with (almost) full-time placement, owning/running different 5 businesses, and tonnes of co-curricular activities (VFL for me, naps for Sarah), between the two of us. How strategies are VERY different so we take you through them both. We also take you briefly through our week on plate with some nuggets of absolute random banter between, as per usual. For those who don't already know Sarah Holloway, she is a one-of-a-kind lawyer turned entrepreneur who gave up her financially stable and highly successful career as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer to sell a green powder online (it's not what you think, this is a PG podcast). Sarah CO-FOUND the global matcha business, Matcha Maiden, in 2014, and then infamous vegan cafe, Matcha Mylkbar, in 2015. In addition to co-founding these 2 businesses, she also is the founder of her own brand Spoonful of Sarah and podcast Seize The Yay. To top it all off, she is a speaker, a fiance, a daughter, a mentor and my best friend. Yes she does sleep, yes she is incredibly hard-working, no it didn't all land on her lap, yes she has a lot on her plate and no, I still haven't figured out how she does it all.Follow her Instagram at @spoonful_of_sarahCheck out her website www.spoonfulofsarah.comGet some matcha in your life hereAbout Brain Fart (with Ang and friends) Through this podcast I hope to share all my thoughts and ruminations, learnings and losses and views and opinions on all the things that I have created, experienced, achieved and FAILED in my 22 years of living- alongside some of the most epic people that I have met along the way. Nic Davidson aka @niccyboy aka founder of Bushy Creative, co-founder of Matcha Maiden and Matcha Mylkbar, fiance of Sarah Holloway (from episode 1), ex-elite athlete, tech and gym junkie and one of the greatest people I have ever met, and I sit down for chats. Find out about his incredible path to where he is now and all the things he's achieved along the way.We discuss how Nic is an all-time nerd, what we think about university degrees, coding and tech and being a role model for young kids. You will also be graced by fart chats and Nic's interpretation of a cow sound... yep. I was able break through the social facade, that is Nic's #fitness #gym #fitspo social media presence, to bring out a raw, honest and real Nic- one that I think will surprise most people! He's one of my greatest friends and someone that I think is worth getting to know properly. Today’s Game Changer Chat is with such an exciting extremely insightful entrepreneur, Sarah Holloway !Sarah began her working life as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer at a leading international law firm. Matcha is now one of the world's premier health food trends and Matcha Maiden is leading the way with a growing community of over 1500 stockists including Anthropologie across the USA, Australian and US warehouses, and a very bright (green) future. In today’s chat Sarah is teaching you:How to build a brand that people LOVEHow to network like a BOSSMaking fear and anxiety an advantage How to find the yey in every day Follow Vanessa Here:www.matchamaiden.comhttps://www.instagram.com/spoonful_of_sarah See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
So, it finally happened. We convinced Nic, my partner in life, business and golden retriever parenthood into coming onto the show. I know a few of you have been eagerly waiting to hear this one and I'm always surprised to hear when people say Nic's quiet or mysterious but then I remember he's actually quite shy (which to some of our closer friends is laughable as he's the OPPOSITE once you get to know him). When I think about how he probably comes across in my stories or in take 527 of a photo together, you probably don't see much of who he really is or how we are as a couple so I'm excited to share what I think is one of the most inspiring ways to yay so far. One of the things I love about him most is that there are so many dimensions to his personality, but if you only know one of them then you'll meet a few of the others in today's episode! And perhaps I'm a bit the same – we're both equal parts nerdburger and arty farty” as I always say which is why we're 10 years in and getting married later this year! As for his bio which I've had to write many a time, it still astounds me all the things he's managed to squeeze into his 34 years. I don't think he gives himself enough credit for most parts of the story, so I've tried to weasel some of it out of him. Starting off as a country boy in outer Devonport, Tasmania, Nic's a serial entrepreneur and often laughs at how he's never actually had a real job. His first career was as an international athlete which took him all over the world and, as mentioned in Jana's episode, he was Jana Pittman's training partner on his own Olympic journey until ongoing injury stopped his career short. On returning to Melbourne, he was poached from his retail job into the night club scene where he really cut his business teeth building Baroq House into its glory days and let me queue jump which is the romantic story of how we met. While there was definitely a lot of partying, he and his team started to develop their own marketing and design skills to take things in-house, which eventually morphed into his current full service digital agency, the Bushy Creative. His self-teaching and inner dork has gone to such lengths that Nic's tech skills ventured even as far software development and he's had two full scale tech spin offs that he talks about in the episode. He's also got an aerial asset capture business taking photos out of helicopters and that's all before Matcha Maiden or Matcha Mylkbar were even a dot on the horizon. So sometimes, he's a very serious tech head businessman but most of the time he's a serial joker – life is NEVER boring when Nic's around. He's the sole reason I was able to leave law for my funtrepreneur life and turned this regimented, conservative lawyer into a crazy adventurer. His abs aren't bad either, as you've probably noticed. This was the hardest episode I've done so far as I'm way too close to be objective so hopefully I've done him justice! #73 How can seizing your yay create monumental shifts and joy in business and life? Sarah began her working life as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer at a leading international law firm. Sarah Holloway and Nic Davidson, are the creators of Matcha Maiden, a range of matcha powder products and co-owners of the plant-based, sustainability-driven café, Matcha Mylkbar in Melbourne and Sydney. In this episode, you’ll hear how Sarah was unable to drink coffee for health reasons and became hooked instead on the nutritional properties of matcha power when working in Hong Kong, for its distinct flavour, high level of anti-oxidants and gentler caffeine level. On their return to Australia, Sarah and Nic started an online business importing and selling Matcha powder, which not only fueled their own daily matcha latte habit, but also creating a community of like-minded followers. This humble side project has evolved into a business with over fifteen hundred stockists, eighty-seven thousand Instagram followers and the launch of an award-winning, sustainability-driven café.Plus, in this episode, you’ll learn about the ‘trickle-down effect’ and how to know when a fleeting food trend will become a more mainstream, mass-appeal opportunity. You can learn more about Matcha Maiden and Matcha Mylkbar, and connect with Sarah and Nic on:https://www.matchamaiden.com/https://www.instagram.com/matcha_maiden/?hl=enhttp://www.matchamylkbar.com/https://www.instagram.com/matcha_mylkbar/?hl=enMany thanks to this episode’s sponsor, the Monash Food Innovation Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Sarah Holloway thought she had her life planned out. She'd studied Arts/Law, graduated top of her class, secured a job at a top-tier law firm in mergers and acquisitions, and soon after had received an offer to become an associate to the Chief Justice of the High Court – a position she’d been working towards for the previous six years. At the very same time her career was taking off, Sarah was busy launching her side-biz ‘Matcha Maiden’, which was born out of her recognizing a gap in the Australian market for matcha-based products. By 2015, and after a year of selling her products locally, it all became real when she was approached by US retailer Urban Outfitters with an order of 10,000 units. Sarah was forced to make a huge life decision – accept the High Court position or quit her job and fulfil the order. Fast forward to now, Matcha Maiden is stocked globally, Sarah and her team have opened a vegan restaurant called Matcha Mylkbar in Melbourne, and the business was recently accepted into the Chobani Incubator program – the first of its kind in Australia.
Lawyer turned funtrepreneur Sarah Holloway says it best. I wouldn’t say I’m the best candidate for a “short bio” because I’m not only a serial rambler but also an overenthusiastic life lover with too many interests, passions, career changes, personal transformations, lifestyle revelations, adventures, hopes and dreams for one single lifetime. I nonetheless do my very best to squeeze in as much goal-kicking, ground-breaking and memory-making as life permits and I’d say I’m best summed up by my overarching life philosophy – “seize the yay”. Sarah is the co-founder of Matcha Maiden & Matcha Mylkbar and is flat out AWESOME! Enjoy the chat! Why and how did Claire start eating a plant-based diet? And how did that lead to the New Normal Project? In this episode, the tables are turned and New Normal Project co-host Claire Davies is interviewed about her story. Claire was featured in a Question and Answer session, hosted by yoga teacher Atika Fraval, at the Body Flow Yoga studio in Windsor in Melbourne. So instead of interviewing a guest herself, this week Claire answers questions from Atika and the live audience at the studio on her journey to plant-based eating, the resources she and co-host Andrew have used to guide and support them, and much more. If you are intrigued as to what might lead an otherwise healthy middle-aged woman and her husband to change their eating habits from a standard meat-laden Australian diet to a healthy plant-based diet, then you will enjoy this podcast. Claire tells several stories about her and her families journey, detailing some resources you will no doubt benefit from checking out, and discussing other topics such as: How the New Normal Project came to be Some of her favourite New Normal Project podcast interviewees (and their stories) The difference between vegetarianism and veganism Her thoughts on oils in the diet How her approach to clothes shopping has changed What exactly she and her family eat in a day How she dealt with plant-based eating and her children Whether freezing food is OK Whether the nutrition in blended smoothies is preserved Her relationship with alcohol Drinking coffee Using soy products Resources from people and things mentioned in this episode: Body Flow Yoga: http://www.bodyflowyoga.com/ Dr Caldwell Esselstyn: http://www.dresselstyn.com/site/ Rich Roll: http://www.richroll.com/ Rich Roll podcast: http://www.richroll.com/category/podcast/ Rich Roll podcast with Andy Puddicombe: http://www.richroll.com/podcast/andy-puddicombe/ Julie Piatt: http://www.srimati.com/ Dr Craig Hassed: http://www.med.monash.edu.au/general-practice/staff-students/hassed.html The Happy Pear: https://thehappypear.ie/ EPIC study: http://www.epic-oxford.org/ The China study: http://nutritionstudies.org/the-china-study/ Dr T.
