Most people are focusing on how their bodies look, not how they feel—and it's holding them back.If you've ever declined an invitation because of how you felt about your body, avoided activities you love, or spent hours criticizing yourself in the mirror, this conversation is your wake-up call. In this episode, I sit down with Taryn Brumfitt, founder of the Body Image Movement and Australian of the Year 2023, to break down why embracing your body isn't just about feeling better—it's about living better. We're tackling the biggest misconceptions about body image—like why focusing on appearance keeps us stuck, why self-love isn't fluffy but foundational, and how body acceptance actually leads to healthier behaviors than body criticism. Plus, we're getting into practical strategies for handling body commentary from family members, maintaining progress when you have a "wobbly moment," and why taking up space as a woman is so revolutionary.Taryn Brumfitt is an Australian filmmaker, author, and speaker internationally renowned for her work in promoting body acceptance. She is the founder of the Body Image Movement, a global initiative dedicated to transforming the way people think and speak about their bodies, encouraging self-acceptance and self-love.In 2023, Taryn was named Australian of the Year for her significant efforts in changing societal perceptions of body image and fostering positivity around self-image.You can learn more about her mission at https://www.bodyimagemovement.com/embrace-you/We Also Discuss:(01:00) Body Image and Self-Acceptance (03:27) Embracing Body Image and Self-Love(13:31) Empowering Body Acceptance Conversations(17:17) Transforming Body Image Through Reframing(26:14) Setting Boundaries for Positive Body Image(35:20) Journeying Towards Body Acceptance Together(43:27) Empowering Women(57:05) Spreading Love and Taking ActionThank You to Our Sponsors: Broads: Broads gives you structured, progressive training and a powerhouse community to keep you strong, consistent, and unstoppable. This week Nicola and Di chat with the incredibly inspiring changemaker, Taryn Brumfitt. Taryn is an award-winning filmmaker, bestselling author and speaker on a mission to help people redefine the way they think about themselves and to end the global body-hating epidemic. She is best known for founding the Body Image Movement and her inspiring documentaries Embrace and Embrace Kids. Taryn has reached more than 200 million people with her inspiring work and in 2023, her efforts were recognised nationally when she was named Australian of the Year. In this chat we get to talk about how it all started back in 2013, when Taryn posted a non-traditional before and after photo of herself that went viral. Her intention was to show some friends of hers that were struggling with their own body image, that even though she had reached her ‘perfect bikini body' through dieting and bodybuilding, she was actually happier when she let go of that extreme way of treating her body and learnt to embrace her body exactly as it was. What Taryn didn't know at the time was that the photo would go viral, reaching tens and tens of millions of people, leading to worldwide media attention and changing her life forever. We hear about the deeply moving emails and messages that Taryn received from people all over the world sharing their own stories of body hatred and Taryn was determined to help these people and spread the message of self-love and body acceptance far and wide. Taryn has some wonderful tips in this episode for how you can begin to reframe the way you see yourself and start to focus on the way your body feels and what it can do for you, rather than simply your appearance. Taryn also shares what some of the pivotal moments along the way have been like - from winning Australian of the Year, to addressing the National Press Club in Canberra, and getting an invite to a State dinner at The White House with President Biden. This was a wonderful conversation with a brilliant woman who is doing such important work in the world. We loved chatting with Taryn and we hope you enjoy listening to her wisdom as much as we did. Taryn Brumfitt went viral back in 2013 when she shared a before and after photo online that broke with convention. Her before photo showed the results of a body building obsession she picked up after having kids, looking all tanned and trim, and her after was when she'd ditched that and returned to a normal body with lumps, bumps and less tan. Taryn went on to found the Body Image Movement, directing her first feature film 'Embrace' in 2016, and now releasing 'Embrace: Kids', confronting the alarming statistics that say around 60 per cent of children aged five to eleven years want to change something about their body. In this conversation Taryn speaks about the cost of body loathing on our lives, how to change your view of your body and why she shared that first photo all those years ago. Today we welcome our incredible Sponsor and one of the co-founders of Active Truth. We are such HUGE fans of this company and have both lived in the maternity tights before and after birth. So, we are humbled to chat to Nadia Tucker, who moved to Brisbane on the same day in 2011 and as new her neighbor Stevie (sounds like destiny) and they quickly became friends over baby playdates and long pram walks in search of coffee. Together, they navigated returning to exercise after having their babies and the many changes that their bodies experienced over this time. They were frustrated with buying activewear online and receiving products that looked beautiful on models but didn't perform in real-life on bodies without model proportions, so they decided to take matters into their own hands. This was a common theme when talking with friends and family. So, they set out to create a brand that not only serviced the activewear needs of women, but celebrated them too!Active Truth is committed to showing a diverse range of women wearing their activewear. They want women to look at Active Truth and see someone like themselves – happy, active, looking and feeling amazing in their activewear. They refuse to photoshop their models and continue to challenge stereotypes and bias around body image which we love. Active Truth are proud to work with organisations that support women through their partnerships with Share the Dignity, Body Image Movement, and a number of smaller female-led, or female-focused, charities. We talk about:Pumping and BIG boobiesStarting the business in the living room and sleeping in swags etc.How the 4th Trimester was for Nadia and the challenges that she overcameHow far the business has come and her fave pair of tightsWhat the idea of 'success' means to Nadia and a Businesswoman and MotherThe power of word of mouth and reviews and Mothers sharing the loveThe Most beautiful and Challenging aspects of MotherhoodAdvice to any parent starting a businessMotherhood in 3 words and MORE!This episode is brought to you by Active Truth who Soph and I absolutely LOVE. Bullying, self perception and gender identity are just some of the focuses of a new documentary on body image. Adelaide filmmaker Taryn Brumfitt, founder of The Body Image Movement and director of documentary Embrace: Kids, said a new documentary to be released September 1 focuses on body loathing and just how pervasive it is in Australia and around the world. She told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings recent statistics on body image and kids were alarming, with 60 per cent of children aged five to 11 years old want to change something about their body. "It's about striking that balance and for kids, that's learning to be kind to themselves, which allows them to be kind to others," she said.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How mean can you be to your body? Several years back, Nicole Ayers realized she wasn't okay. She was experiencing rampant thoughts and having nightmares, and old wounds she thought she had buried were reappearing. This led Nicole on a journey of self-discovery only to find that she didn't like myself very much, especially her body. She was horrified by how cruel she was to her body and now, with two daughters (ages twelve and ten), she couldn't allow her body-shaming be the model for how they might relate to their bodies. Nicole set herself on a mission to be a better role model for her girls and she did this through, of all things, writing letters. She started a daily journaling practice of writing love notes to her body and all its parts. The transformation was liberating and was the tool that silenced the voice of shame. Bio: Self-love sage and author Nicole C. Ayers is a dynamic and engaging speaker who gets real, raw and vulnerable about her personal journey to finally loving herself. And all her body parts. She's a strong voice for female empowerment and the freedom it brings. Nicole's speaking style is just like a warm embrace, pulling people in and leave with transformative tools to get to know themselves. Nicole is the award-winning author of Love Notes to My Body, recognized as one of 2020's best life-changing books, and its two body-positive companion books. She's been invited by local and national media to speak about the importance of body acceptance and where she encourages everyone to disrupt the narrative that tells them they are not enough. A few short years ago, 43 year-old Taryn Brumfitt’s life changed monumentally when she decided to stop hating her body. A simple ‘before and after’ picture Taryn posted online resulted in 8000 women reaching out to share their own tales of body dissatisfaction, and that’s when her body image revelation - and revolution - started. Now a best-selling author and director of the social-change documentary, Embrace, Taryn’s won a stack of global awards and accolades and celebrities’ support...but that’s not why she continues to push for self-love and acceptance. It’s moments like meeting a woman in her seventies who broke down crying after seeing unedited vulvas in Embrace...and feeling ‘normal’ for the first time in her life. Many thought-provoking and freeing conversations ahead in this episode, and Taryn also opens up about finding herself suddenly single at 40+ following the end of her marriage, how she coped with being alone during 2020, and the trepidation and excitement of finding a new love. So, what happens when you let go of past versions of yourself? We find out in FORTY. Re-releasing this beauty to celebrate the launch of Embrace on Netflix on March 5th!!! Three women who represent IWD to me had to postpone their recordings, but Taryn also inspires me everyday to embrace my womanhood so if you missed this back in 2019, what a perfect week to catch up Today's guest is one of the people I admire most in this world who is the fiercely passionate thought leader behind The Body Image Movement and whose first film, the documentary Embrace, has reached over 100 million people with her message about learning to love your body. Taryn Brumfitt broke the internet in 2013 with an unconventional before and after photo where the after shot was heavier and HAPPIER than the leaner before shot taken during a body building competition when she was more restrictive, less balanced and less happy. After going viral all over the world and receiving over 7000 messages from women struggling with body confidence, she wrote a book and crowdfunded an incredible documentary, Embrace, that is set to become Australia's highest grossing documentary ever. She is now in the process of raising money for the second film, Embrace Kids, and I couldn't be more excited for the positive impact and contribution it will make to a comparative, competitive and sometimes overwhelming world that our children will grow up in. Not only is she making serious waves in the world, she also loves to play and doesn't take life too seriously which I LOVE about her and the cackles are next level – hope you smile as much as I did during our chat!!! + Full show notes here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with the extremely talented, funny, intelligent and down-to-earth Comedian, Musician & Artist - Jude Perl.We reminisced and had a good laugh about the school we both went to and had so many moments of shared understanding of all the parts that live inside us and the ups and downs of life as a performer creating your own shows. In this episode we speak about: How to not letting other people's opinions and voices get to you as a performerthe ups and downs of creating solo showsthe journey of embracing all parts and voices inside of youhow to find peace with your inner critic letting go of the identity of being a performer and self acceptance About Jude:Jude Perl is a multi-award-winning singer, songwriter and comedian based in Melbourne. In her hometown, she has created a name for herself by writing and performing hilarious, yet brutally honest, stream-of-consciousness-style lyrics, set to undeniably catchy and well-crafted songs. In 2015, Jude performed her first hour long solo comedy show ‘Is It Just Me?' for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Her season sold out and 3 extra shows were added due to popular demand. Her first 4 solo shows won 3 consecutive Green Room Awards for Best Original Songs (2 shows were in one year, hence the weird math). In 2016, several of Jude's songs were featured in the internationally acclaimed documentary ‘Embrace' from activist and Body Image Movement founder Taryn Brumfitt, including a track that was written specifically for the film, which you can listen to hereBook Tickets to her upcoming shows here: "I Have A Face" - Gasworks Theatre&"Greatest Hits: So Fresh Spring 2020" - Melbourne FringeFollow Jude: Instagram: @judeperlFacebook: Jude PerlTo listen to more episodes & subscribe, rate & review The Creative Zone Podcast, click hereSupport the show
Taryn Brumfitt started her public career by doing things unconventionally. In 2012 she casually posted a photograph of what her body looked like years after competing in swimsuit competitions. With pure embrace, love and fearlessness she posted a nude photo that showed skin folds, cellulite and the realness of a woman’s body without the spray tan and photoshop. The act was almost as beautiful as she is. And it went viral. 100 million people kind of viral. Since that day, Taryn has dedicated her life to sharing a simple message: get your relationship right with your body. She’s an internationally recognized keynote speaker, founder of The Body Image Movement, a best-selling author, creator of a documentary called Embrace, 2019 Australian of the year and a mother of three.

Taryn talks about the persistent obsession with a type of body shape, and how we can help children grow to love the skin they're in.

Today’s guest is one of the people I admire most in this world who is the fiercely passionate thought leader behind The Body Image Movement and whose first film, the documentary Embrace, has reached over 100 million people with her message about learning to love your body. Taryn Brumfitt broke the internet in 2013 with an unconventional before and after photo where the after shot was heavier and HAPPIER than the leaner before shot taken during a body building competition when she was more restrictive, less balanced and less happy. After going viral all over the world and receiving over 7000 messages from women struggling with body confidence, she wrote a book and crowdfunded an incredible documentary, Embrace, that is set to become Australia’s highest grossing documentary ever. She is now in the process of raising money for the second film, Embrace Kids, and I couldn’t be more excited for the positive impact and contribution it will make to a comparative, competitive and sometimes overwhelming world that our children will grow up in. Not only is she making serious waves in the world, she also loves to play and doesn’t take life too seriously which I LOVE about her and the cackles are next level – hope you smile as much as I did during our chat!!!+ Full show notes here+ Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah+ Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

“You weren’t born into this world hating your body.” Host Amelia Phillips chats with founder of The Body Image Movement, Taryn Brumfitt, about how we can stop negative self-talk and learn to love our bodies after kids - stretch marks, muffin tops, mum tums and all.
The Body Image Movement can only be described as a revolution. And it began in 2013 when Taryn Brumfitt posted a ‘non-traditional’ Before + After photo one night on Facebook. On the left, the ‘before’ photo showed ‘ripped’ Taryn on stage at a bodybuilding competition. On the right, the ‘after’ photo showed a ‘softer’ Taryn with visible rolls around her tummy looking content and happy. The switching of the photos (not to mention Taryn’s obviously content and happy nature in the ‘after’ photo) clearly resonated. Overnight the image went viral and within 12 months, it had been viewed by 100 million people! That led Taryn to produce the ‘Embrace’ documentary which explored why so many people (and women in particular) hate their bodies. She’s also founded the Body Image Movement (BMI) which is on a mission to help people love and embrace their body, regardless of shape, size, ethnicity or ability. "My body is my home. It's my soul's mate." - Nora Tschirner "My body is not an ornament. It is the vehicle to my dreams." Hey there, lovely radicals! This week on the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, you'll hear me a chat with a fellow official "Body Image Movement Global Ambassador": Dan Lewin from the Sunshine Coast in Australia! Dan is 35 years old and has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics (Honors) and he has started working for a group of specialized dietitians dedicated to working with clients who are battling eating disorders, disordered eating and weight and body concerns in general. In all of his work, he uses the principles of Health at Every Size (HAES) and the non-diet approach. He is very passionate about working with community and raising awareness around body image issues, for women as well as men. As a professional photographer, he uses imagery as a tool to bring attention to male and female body image concerns. Today, you’ll hear Dan talk about: – How he remembers his relationship to food and body as a young boy – Where he got the message that his body was too big – What the role of his family was in the development of his body image – What experience kicked off his first engagement in dieting and trying to "look normal" – How he became a slave to restricting and counting, even while traveling overseas – Why he took things to the extreme after meeting his wife, especially with exercise – How his behaviors influenced his relationship – How, when he got the most compliments, his mental and physical health suffered the worst – What made him let go of his perfectionistic tendencies – Who and what made him see that he didn’t want to spread the diet-word and make others as miserable as he was – What helped him to let go of his old belief that his worth was tied to his looks – What he replaced self-hate and self-criticism with – Why he describes the journey towards body acceptance as an ongoing, fluid process – How defining his personal values helped him move through the initial phase of letting go of dieting – Why uncomfortable feelings and difficult emotions are part of the way to liberation, not a sign that it’s not working – Why we need to face our fears and actually go collect the evidence (that nothing bad will happen if we gain some weight or lose tone) to see that it was only our mind holding us prisoner for so long – Why the study of dietetics and nutrition often only reinforces body-negativity and fails to address the epidemic of disordered eating and the increase of eating disorders – How he discovered "The Body Image Movement" that was created by Taryn Brumfitt, the creator of the documentary "Embrace" – Why he would love to see more men watching this movie – How he tries to encourage and inspire other men to talk about their struggles – Why he thinks body image can never be a static thing – Why he believes it is critical to teach the younger generation about media- and marketing literacy – How he intends to fight against the disgraceful "headless fatty" phenomenon in media imagery... ... And so much more! Check out Dan’s work here: www.innerselfrevealed.com.au www.fmb.com.au His favorite quote: "To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best to make you everybody BUT yourself means to fight the hardest battle that any human being could fight." – E. Taryn Brumfitt is the founder of the Body Image Movement. We talk about her film, "Embrace" and how body-loathing and body-loving inspired her to empower women around the world to love the skin that they're in. Then, STAY TUNED for "Tribe Tips" from Restore Humanity founder, Sarah Fennel, on their mission to "Support Other Women. Period." by providing maxi pads to young women in Kenya.
Body image dissatisfaction is not gender biased, both men and women experience these issues. However, many men do not express their vulnerability when it comes to body image. It can be a long road to self-acceptance, but by sharing his story, Dan hopes that it encourages both men and women who are struggling with body image concerns (and any associated unhealthy behaviors) to reach out if they need support to break free from society’s pressures of conforming to BS beauty ideals. -taken from https://www.innerselfrevealed.com.au/ Dan first inspired me to speak to him as he shared a nude picture of himself with the quote.. "My body is not broken, It does not need to be fixed, It is what it is, not flawed, but characteristically me" I wanted to ask Dan about this great image and why he decided to become an Ambassador of the Body Image Movement.
