Iona Anderson is a teenage Australian Olympian and one of the best backstrokers in the world. 5th at her first Olympics individually, she came home with silver and bronze medals for her relay efforts in Paris. A native of Perth, West Australia, Iona grew up focusing primarily on gymnastics and didn't even start swimming until age 12, so her rise to be among the elites happened quickly. Perhaps this success in the pool comes from a short term focus, not being distracted by the potential she has down the road as Iona is simply focused on this season, in particular improving her skills off the block and the walls. Iona joined us from her temporary training base in Scotland but will return soon to her main base at the WAIS as she focuses on the build toward Commonwealth Games. “I think I'm ready for it. I'm excited for it. I have a lot of self-hatred, anger and adrenaline kicking in for this race. I know it's just the beginning of my season…With this, it's just about proving where I belong in Australian running and I have to back myself thinking I am in record holder in the event and I should act like it and train like it. I feel like we've been training smart and training well over the past few months. I've gone from a little confidence to a lot of confidence in about six weeks.” Australian Olympian and 1500m national record holder Olli Hoare unfortunately had to miss last year's World Championships with a sports hernia and some swelling in the groin area. He had just run a personal best of 3:29.41 at the Oslo Diamond League but the pain was too much to race through. After some time off and some heavy cross-training, he rejoined his OAC teammates for workouts in the fall and will race for the first time this weekend at the Australian National Championships. In this episode, Mac Fleet and him talk about the comeback process, what it was like watching his teammate have success at the World Indoor Championships, the way 1500m racing has evolved and more. Australian Olympian and World Champion Isaac Cooper does things differently. Having tried a typical training program for swimmers, Isaac Cooper realized the norm is not for him. He doesn't keep up with results and happenings in swimming. He doesn't know the names of many of his competitors or the elite swimmers in the world today. He just likes to swim fast and for short distances. Isaac Cooper incorporates a lot of non-swimming activities into his program where he builds strength and aerobic fitness outside of the pool, and while he does some very hard training in the water, he doesn't swim a lot of volume. Seems to be working really well. This conversation is packed with nuggets of wisdom Isaac drops on us. One of our favorite conversations on the pod. Enjoy!

A child of athletes and with close ties to the greatest Australian Olympian ever, Lani Pallister was destined to become a World Champion, a title she earned 4x in 2022 at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in front of a home crowd in Melbourne. Lani Pallister has dealt with a steady stream of setbacks in the past few years: heart surgery, eating disorder, and missing selection to the famed Australian Dolphins senior team by one spot for 4 years in a row. Lani Pallister could have easily fallen back on her roots as a world-class athlete in competitive Lifesaving (yes, it's a sport, and she still holds a youth world record in it), but instead she has emerged as a legitimate medal threat in the swimming distance events in Paris. Enjoy!

Show Sponsor AnyQuestion - https://link.anyquestion.com/Greg-Bennett Support the show at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=26936856 "The Greg Bennett Show" In this episode of The Greg Bennett Show, Greg has an insightful conversation with swimming legend Brett Hawke. Brett is one of the rare few who not only reached the top of the world as an athlete in his chosen sport of sprint swimming, but he has also coached numerous athletes to do the same—a five-time Olympian, twice as an athlete, and three times a coach. He was an Australian Olympian at the 2000 Sydney & 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Before his Olympic career, he went to Auburn University to swim. There he earned seventeen All-American honors and was a nine-time NCAA individual champion, and helped Auburn win two national team championships. After his Olympic athlete career, he returned to Auburn to become an assistant coach in 2006. And then became head coach from 2009 – 2018. During that time, Auburn won the NCAA National title in 2009. And he trained countless Auburn swimmers for the Olympics. He Coached Brazilian swimmer Cesar Cielo to the 50m freestyle gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games In 2008 He was last on the Greg Bennett Show on episode 62, almost 2 years ago. A lot has changed since. He now works as the Head of Expert Acquisition at AnyQuestion, has the world's number one swimming podcast, “inside with Brett Hawke”, and we've become good mates in the process. I'm excited to discuss with him the various pivots and transitions throughout his career. Simply, a wonderful conversation with a great athlete and coach. Timestamps 2:13 - Interview with Brett Hawke begins. 5:27 - Brett explains how he sees opportunity and commits 'all-in' and throws himself into ensuring success. 7:49 - Brett and Greg discuss his determined journey to becoming a world class athlete. Being smacked in the face when he didn't make his first Olympic trial, but how he went to work. A defining moment that carved his pathway to success at the highest level as a swimmer and a coach. 10:50 - Being at the olympics in a period that was incredibly special for Australian Swimming, Brett's burning desire, and his humbleness in understanding how much he could learn and be inspired by his equally world calss teammates. I was like a spongue sitting there right next to Ian Thorpe 10 minutes before his greatest swim at the 2004 Olympics. 14:10 - Brett talks through his pathway from athlete to coach. 20:26 - Brett explains how he coached César Cielo and how he brought what he knew from his own learnings from being around the greatest athletes. Brett had the knowledge, César had the talent, and together they tapped into it and created a magical partnership. 23:33 - Swimming is in Brett Hawke's blood. He now hosts a successful podcast - Inside With Brett Hawke. Be sure to check out the recent ep with Cody Simpson, global teen-popstar turned athlete. 25:50 - Brett is all about 'constant and never-ending improvement' and he is utilising all facets of his life and career 9and his podcast) to analyse and learn from other people. I have the full ability to control my brain and my thoughts, that then affect my physiology and performance in every single way 30:07 - Brett describes his favourite learnings from his time producing in excess of 220 podcast epsiodes. 33:55 - Brett is now part of the anyquestion.com team as Head of Expert Aquisition and explains why he is so inspired and what he contributes to the day-to-day organisation. Everybody has a voice, everybody wants to heard 39:14 - A day in the life of Brett Hawke 48:22 - Brett has built his career by recognising that surrounding himself with people better than he is, knowing that they make him smarter and better! Brett tells a beautiful story about Grant Hackett who also understands how the transition from pro-athlete, to the corporate world works. 52:47 - What would Brett Hawke tell his 18 year old self now? Everyone runs from being uncomfortable 55:27 - Brett shares a very raw and authentic answer to the question; "who he would want to have dinner with?" 58:59 - Where will Brett Hawke be in 3 years? If someone has put a lot of trust and faith in me, I better put some action behind this 59:59 - To finish the episode, Greg asks some Rapid Fire questions to get Brett's twitch reflexes pumping. One book you would recommend? Two most-used apps on your phone? What time of day are you most productive? First job? Out of 10, how cool are you? Who would you want to play a movie of your life? Which decade of music is the best? If you could be transformed into one animal, which one would you choose? Where is somewhere you haven't been, you'd like to go? Professional runner for Asics Running, associate partner at IBM where she oversees a team of 236 consultants, and mom to 7-year-old Pete, Lisa could write a book on how she juggles it all, but is quick to credit her incredibly supportive family, running community & colleagues at IBM. Her running journey is truly inspiring and nothing short of remarkable. Time and time again, Lisa was told she wasn't good enough or couldn't do something and has used that to fuel her enormous competitive fire! Lisa has a personal best of 2:25:15 in the marathon, 1:08:43 in the half marathon, 31:20 in the 10k, and was a bronze medalist in the 2008 World CrossCountry Championships. Lisa recently placed 2nd at the Gold Coast Marathon in early July, running 2:25:55 at age 43! Can you say #fasterasamaster?? Lisa grew up in an athletic family and enjoyed netball as a kid until one too many crashes with the concrete caused her to shift her focus to running. In her teens, Lisa would run sessions with her dad's Aussie footy team, the Fitzroy Lions, so he could keep an eye on her. No doubt trying to keep up or outrun Dad's athletes helped forge her competitive fire. It was also a full-circle moment, as she used to sneak into the locker room with her sister to try and listen to the halftime speeches from her dad who coached the Fitzroy Lions in Australian rules football. Topics: managing her training, her IBM team, and family during the pandemic; youth sports, netball, finding running; trying to stay healthy, finding orthotics, persisting through stress fractures; meaningful race moments—Gold Coast, 8th place at NYC, 5th at London Marathon, 2022 Sydney 10K 31:20 (the fastest time ever run in Australia), World Cross Country team medal in Edinburgh; athletes who inspired—Lisa Ondiecki, Benita Willis; mindset, her darkest hole; impactful coaches—Jeff Hawkins (junior coach), Pam Turney (coach in her 20s), Dr. Richard Telford (her mentor since 2000 and coach from 2009, who coached Lisa''s dad in Australian Rules Football; community service—being an ambassador for Running Mums Australia and for a sustainability company called ZeroCo. I'm stoked to meet Lisa and Lachlan at the Berlin Marathon and am rooting hard for her to chase down a new PR! It was truly a privilege to host this convo and share Lisa's incredibly INSPIRING journey! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. On Episode 52, Sunny and Mayank sit with Australian national champion rower and Olympic gold medalist, Rosemary Popa OAM.With a strong bloodline of rowing pedigree, Rosie is the daughter of Sue and Ion, two Australian bronze medallists from Los Angeles 1984.However, behind the glory, Rosie shares openly about what is often hidden behind the closed doors and shiny medals. She brings awareness to the numerous career dynamics that pose mental health risks to athletes: unsustainable expectations for perfection and constant improvement, enormous public pressure to win, pervasive demand to outwork or outlast an opponent, and relatively short career spans that can end in the blink of an eye due to injury. No longer should athletes be viewed as sub-human robots used to serve the needs of the masses. Conversations around athletics must be intersectional and critically evaluate how individual differences interact with cultural environments and systems. Only then will we be able to provide an open, safe, and collective environment for athletes to thrive in.In this episode, we speak about Rosie's:
