Utes Insider – Pitcher Matthew Sox

Redshirt senior right-hander discusses his first year as the Friday night starter and the highlights of the Gary Henderson's inaugural season as head coach Utah baseball is in the hunt for a Pac-12 Conference Tournament berth and a top-eight finish in the league. With two weeks remaining in the regular season, redshirt senior pitcher Matthew Sox joins the show to talk about the highlights of the season and what has led to his success. Sox, who spent three years at Whitman College, pitched out of the bullpen last season and now is the Friday night starter. He has made 12 starts this year with a 4-3 record and 5.40 ERA. Sox has recorded 54 strikeouts and just 19 walks in 73.1 innings.

Alexia Burch, a super senior from Sparks, Nev., and two-time team captain, is wrapping up her stellar career for the Utah gymnastics team. The three-time All-Pac-12 selection joins this episode of Utes Insider with Mike Lageschulte to look back on her time with the program and preview the NCAA Championships. She also talks about what has helped make Utah a dynamite beam team in recent years. Burch has already captured the Pac-12 vault title and NCAA Regional bars championship in 2022 after not taking up the latter event until last season. She scored three 9.95 scores on vault, bars and beam at the NCAA Regional semifinals.

From playing on a team that was ranked in the Top 25 as a redshirt freshman, to experiencing the struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic, to leading the program to its first Pac-12 Tournament title game and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament this season, the senior point guard from Rapid City, S.D., has been there to experience all of it. Gylten, who ranks top five all-time at Utah in assists, joins the show to look back on her career and look ahead to this Friday's NCAA First Round game against Arkansas.

They also look back on a whirlwind couple of months that included racing with the U.S. Olympic team at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing. Both returned to the Utah team to compete at the RMISA and NCAA West Regional Championships, where McCabe won both women's Nordic events in the freestyle and classical while Jager captured the men's 20K freestyle.

Mandur, a native of Mill Bay, British Columbia, became the third Utah golfer to qualify for NCAAs as an individual since 1990 and has the best Regional finish since that time by tying for fourth. The Ute golf team became the first Utah team to qualify for regionals since 1992, where it tied for seventh place.

Freshman from Park City looks back on winning two titles at the 2021 NCAA Championships  Becoming just the 12th skier in school history to win two races at nationals, freshman Nordic skier Sydney Palmer-Leger joins host Mike Lageschulte on this edition of Utes Insider to look back on her amazing performance at the 2021 NCAA Championships. After winning the 5-km classic during the first Nordic competition, Palmer-Leger came out strong again on the final day to capture the 15-km freestyle by 24 seconds. During this edition of Utes Insider presented by Pepsi, the stories of two recent Utah Athletics traditions, the MUSS and flashing the U, are told firsthand by men behind them. John Fackler worked for the U Alumni Association from 2000-18, but he might be best known as the Godfather of the MUSS. The phenomenon of flashing the U exploded after Utah’s 2009 Sugar Bowl win over Alabama. However, its creation didn’t even involve the Ute football team. Rather, it was born out of promise made by loyal Utah fan John Bircumshaw to the father of a gymnast.

Utes Insider –Stephen Fife, former Utah pitcher who played 11 years in professional baseball

During our interview, Fife looks back at some of the early days of his life in baseball, which included a trip to the Little League World Series. After not receiving much interest from Division I teams coming out of high school, Fife started his collegiate career at Everett Community College north of Seattle. He joined the Utes for his sophomore season in 2007, going 6-2 with a 4.43 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 63 innings. As a junior in 2008, Fife went 7-5 with a 3.72 ERA and a team-high 78 strikeouts in 92 innings. In our conversation, Fife recalls pitching in college against eventual No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State in 2008, and how his performance that night in front of nearly 40 professional scouts raised his profile heading into the 2008 MLB Draft.

Rev. France Davis has worked with the Utah football team since the early 2000s, is an emeritus adjunct professor at the University of Utah, and was the pastor for Calvary Baptist Church for 46 years before retiring last December. Since moving to Salt Lake City in the early 1970s, Davis has fought numerous battles on behalf of Utah’s black community. Part of our conversation with Rev. Davis will be about his time at the U, the other portion will center on his life experiences, which have provided him with unparalleled perspective on the issues caused by social injustice and racial inequality. He also offers great insight on what people can do to be a positive influence during these challenging times.

Utes Insider - Tim Drisdom, former Runnin’ Ute basketball player and musician

As the point guard for the Runnin’ Utes from 2002-06, Tim Drisdom was a part of three Mountain West Conference championships and a run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2005. During this episode of Utes Insider, Drisdom shares his insights on what made those teams so great, as well as his memories of playing for head coach Rick Majerus and alongside Andrew Bogut, who was the 2005 National Player of the Year.   Following a professional basketball career from 2007-10, Drisdom moved back to Salt Lake City to become a high school basketball coach and pursue two of his other passions in his life: religion and music. Drisdom currently serves as the musical director for The Point Church and the Salt Lake City Mass Choir. He recently released a song with his brother Terrence, who performs under the name ERNE, entitled “Hold On,” which aims to provide an inspirational message during these challenging times. It has already received over 14,000 views on YouTube.   You can find the song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRbcQLbT12g   Drisdom started over 100 games as a Runnin’ Ute and ranked among the best point guards in the Mountain West Conference. During Utah’s run to the NCAA Regional Semifinals in 2004-05, he ranked sixth in the Mountain West by averaging 3.21 assists per game and led the league with a 1.95 assist-to-turnover ratio. Utah was 92-38 with a .708 winning percentage during his four-year career.   After college, Drisdom played in Finland, China and Mexico. He has also competed in The Basketball Tournament in recent years in the United States. On a bus while playing in China in 2010, Drisdom says God spoke to him saying, “Give this up for me, and I’ll take care of you.” It was that moment when he decided to choose his current path in life. Drisdom came back to the U to earn his bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies in 2015. He was an assistant basketball coach at Murray High School for four years before becoming the athletics director and basketball coach Intermountain Christian School, where he has spent the past two years.

Our second month of Utes Insider presented by Pepsi begins with Hannah Flippen, a two-time Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year in softball who is vying for a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Summer Olympics.   The first three-time All-American in school history looks back on her career at Utah, which included three trips to the NCAA Tournament and back-to-back Super Regional appearances in 2016 and 2017. Flippen also talks about her playing experience with the U.S. National Team, which dates back to 2017. She earned a roster spot for the 2020 Olympics, which has been pushed back to July and August of 2021.

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month and the challenges facing everyone during the coronavirus pandemic, we invited Jonathan Ravarino, the director of psychology and wellness for Utah Athletics, to join the program. Since Jonathan came on board in 2015, Utah has experienced tremendous growth in its mental health initiatives for student-athletes and staff. Those resources have become even more valuable since the collegiate athletics season was shut down in mid-March and student-athletes and were unexpectedly sent home. Jonathan and his staff have been working diligently to help everyone in the Utah Athletics family maintain good mental health during these trying times and prepare for what’s ahead. He also offers some great advice to help everyone navigate the challenges of the current pandemic.
