#197 The Eunuch: The First Incel Novel On this episode of #mensexpleasure, I chat with Charles Fischer, the author of The Eunuch—a darkly comic novel set in Babylon during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II. Told from the point of view of Nergal, a eunuch slave-scribe who keeps the secrets of the king's harem, the book is a tale of depravity and love in a time of imperial decline. Charles Fischer holds degrees from St. Olaf College, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Washington. He lives in Seattle with his wife, Lisa, and teaches writing and humanities at Everett Community College in Washington. The Eunuch is his first novel. Key Points: - Charles introduces himself - "The Eunuch": Journey of a decade's creation - Babylon invasion story through a eunuch's eyes - Nergal's struggle with masculinity and isolation - Sublimating desires into art through writing - Importance of community in personal growth - Exploring love's forms: eros, philia, agape - Finding love in unexpected places and forms Relevant links: Charles' Twitter: https://twitter.com/cfischer2 Charles' novel: https://www.gabbrohead.com/the-eunuch --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cam-fraser/message

With a background in ancient Greek, a Ph.D. in English combined with a Master of Theological Studies degree from the Harvard Divinity School, Charles is uniquely positioned to draw on the events of ancient history as the basis of fiction. He lives in Seattle with his wife, the author Lisa Wogan. He is the author of The Eunuch a new book from The Gabbro Head Press. The Eunuch is a twisted tale of personal love, moral depravity, imperial overreach, and societal decline.  The scope is staggering, the setting exotic, the characters original—and the narrator's voice is not only compelling but also frequently hilarious. The historical details have been painstakingly researched.  Although it can stand scrutiny as a historical novel, The Eunuch is really an accessible literary mash-up that calls to mind the Game of Thrones novels, Lolita, the Gormenghast novels, and Memoirs of a Geisha, with aristocratic gluttony and sexual indulgence set against the drought and famine of the failing Babylonian empire.  The central themes of The Eunuch are big and timeless: sex and sexuality, love, greed and ambition, power, betrayal, religion, war and the causes of war. An ambitious writer, Charles realized he couldn't compete with “the big swinging, literary dicks” of his father's generation – writers like Norman Mailer, Philip Roth, and John Updike – because times change and he could not write about sex and power in the same way that they did. But through the voice of the insignificant Nergal the Eunuch, Charles was able to address such topics while empowering the weak: who is more important, Nergal asks, the King that slaughters 10,000 or the slave scribe who records the King's deed for posterity? Charles's novel is a will-to-power for the powerless that ends in a bang rather than a whimper: Nergal is like a little rodent who gnaws at the foundation of the mighty Ziggurat of Babylon until he causes the summit to topple. Mystic-Skeptic Radio produces programs such as Uncensored & Raiders of the Unknown. On February 16, 1987, Warren Burns, a seasoned firefighter, was a newly appointed fire investigator on duty in Everett, Washington when a fire was reported at Everett Community College, where Burns himself had studied Fire Science. On his way to the scene, he heard the unthinkable over the radio, a firefighter had been separated from his team and was trapped inside the burning Library. The firefighter was Gary Parks, a close personal friend of Burns'. Gary Parks died that night in the line of duty and when the fire was declared arson, Burns' vowed to never give up on holding the arsonist accountable for the death of his friend. Immediately, there were three main suspects that held the focus of investigators. But Burns along with the Parks family would endure more than three decades of waiting before the arsonist was sentenced in Gary Parks' murder. This  to Crime to Burn.  Crime to Burn is a true crime podcast focused on that intersection where true crime meets arson and criminal negligence. April is a licensed Fire Protection Engineer with 20 years of industry experience and a former firefighter. Jenny is a true crime buff and spent months talking April into taking on this project. Plus, Jenny keeps April from going too deep into the weeds on the science. No boring college science lectures here, it's all true crime, fire, and expert opinions.  Special thanks to Warren Burns, Mike McGill, and Dave Statter Show sources: The majority of this Episode is from an interview with former Fire Investigator, Warren Burns.  Other sources: https://www.upi.com/Archives/1987/02/16/Library-fire-kills-firefighter-hurts-3-others/7739540450000/   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lT03m_Icht0   https://www.heraldnet.com/news/solved-arsonist-behind-1987-firefighters-death-was-only-12/   https://www.firefighterclosecalls.com/lodd-history-25-years-later-firefighters-death-in-arson-weighs-on-family-comrades/   https://www.firehouse.com/safety-health/video/21216027/man-admits-to-starting-1987-fire-that-killed-wa-firefighter   https://myeverettnews.com/2021/05/13/judge-sentences-elmer-nash-jr-to-ten-years-in-death-of-everett-firefighter-gary-parks/   https://coffeeordie.com/everett-fire-1987/

Today we are talking to Everett Community College President, Dr. Daria Willis. Only 6 months into her presidency, COVID-19 hit, which she says made it a very interesting experience. She says they are now up to about 30% face to face or hybrid and that number will trickle up as they get into the Spring quarter. They're currently focusing on their strategic plan and looking to the future. Dr. Willis says she has found that some students really love online learning and want to keep it, while others are looking forward to being back in person. They're working on a balance of the two, so students can do what works for them. When it comes to burnout, Dr. Willis says that was an issue even pre-pandemic. She refers to it more than initiative fatigue that was exasperated by the pandemic. She says they're trying to get back to the mission of who they are, and to say here are some things we can't do anymore. Her message to the college is that they can't be all things to all people. One way they're managing burnout is by looking at telecommuting policies. The pandemic has shown us that it's possible to run a college from a home computer, and so flexible scheduling for their employees will be in the works. In Washington state, the legislature has put a lot of focus behind guided pathways. She says that while they get a considerable amount of funding, they also get many coaches who are all there to do the same thing. She's found herself asking which of these coaches they actually need, and they've gone from 6 to 2. This is just one decision that gives them room to breathe. In a tight-knit community, people want the college to do everything, but Dr. Willis says that ‘no' is a complete sentence occasionally. Dr. Willis says the best advice she was ever given was in kindergarten, and that was to treat others the way you want to be treated. It's simple advice, but it's often hard for people to do. When asked for her best advice, she tells others to say yes more. The more opportunities you take, the further you'll go. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/innovationalliance/message

During our interview, Fife looks back at some of the early days of his life in baseball, which included a trip to the Little League World Series. After not receiving much interest from Division I teams coming out of high school, Fife started his collegiate career at Everett Community College north of Seattle. He joined the Utes for his sophomore season in 2007, going 6-2 with a 4.43 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 63 innings. As a junior in 2008, Fife went 7-5 with a 3.72 ERA and a team-high 78 strikeouts in 92 innings. In our conversation, Fife recalls pitching in college against eventual No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State in 2008, and how his performance that night in front of nearly 40 professional scouts raised his profile heading into the 2008 MLB Draft.

We've all heard a tall tale or two, but when it comes to Captain Dan Blanchard—well, he's the real thing. Growing up in Washington State, he has always been around boats. Even as a kid, Dan worked alongside other family members restoring the family's wooden tug. And the reward of all that hard work paid off in a big way—exploring winding waterways, beachcombing on remote shores, oyster picking and clam digging, learning to skin dive, incredible wildlife and cultural encounters, and a lifetime on the water. At this point, it's just part of his genetic makeup. Dan's unassailable career began early. As an accomplished Sea Scout, his leadership skills earned him honors of Regional Boatswain and National Boatswain Mate when he was 16. At 18, he received his Ship Master's License. He attended Everett Community College, and from there he's lived a storied-tale—owner and operator of Blanchard Marine; Captain of sightseeing vessels at Glacier Bay Lodge in Alaska; 14 years at Alaska Sightseeing/Cruise West working through the ranks from Captain to Director of Marine Operations to Vice President of Operations; and in 1999, he joined American Safari Cruises. Dan acquired the company in 2008 and as Principal/CEO, launched InnerSea Discoveries, a new small boat expedition company specializing in active adventures on the water. In January 2013, the company changed its name to Un-Cruise Adventures. A natural storyteller (2012 winner of Seattle's annual "Stories of the Sea" contest), enthusiastic skier and cyclist, energetic hiker, world-explorer in off-the-chart places, accomplished sailor, ocean lover, lover of the natural world, and lover of life are just a few of the tags and feverish passions you can pin on Dan. And in May 2013, he was adopted into a native Tlingit tribe. He's living the dream and wouldn't have it any other way. For Dan, it can't get much sweeter with both of his kids in the biz working beside him—it's safe to say it's in their genes too.

Is it time for Democrats in Washington DC to shift their thinking about how they can win and maintain power? We talk this week with political scientist David Faris, author of the book, “It's Time to Fight Dirty: How Democrats Can Build a Lasting Majority in American Politics,” about the ways Republicans have used loopholes in the Constitution to their advantage, and how Democrats need to fight back by, among other things, passing a voting rights act, granting statehood to DC and Puerto Rico, expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court, and doubling the size of the House of Representatives, among other cures. All of this can only occur, of course, after Democrats have taken back Congress and the White House, and Faris also has several thoughts on how to make that happen. I want to take a step away from the real estate market for a moment to talk about my darling Chloe. She graduated from community college last week. We’re celebrating that big life step in our family. When Chloe graduated from high school two years ago, she announced, “I think I want to open a bakery. If that doesn’t work, maybe I’ll go work for NASA.” I asked, “Why don’t you go work for NASA and bake on the weekends?” “Nah,” she replied, “I don’t want to do all of that really big math.” Chloe is good at really big math problems, but having to do that all the time was just not her cup of tea. And she really loved to bake. So, she went to community college to study business administration and prepare to open the bakery. When she took her first accounting class, she realized how much accounting made sense for her. I am so proud of Chloe. She just finished up at Everett Community College and she will move to the University of Washington Bothell campus in the fall. “I am so excited for Chloe and her bright future.” These transitions give us opportunity. How great is it that we get to celebrate these awesome times in our family when we get to see growth? It’s so amazing that we get to see the people our children are becoming. I am so excited for Chloe and her future. She’s made some awesome steps. She has been working for Chick-fil-A for the last year and before that she worked at Alfie’s. She’s been so strong and responsible, and I am excited because her future is bright. I hope that you take the time to talk to your own graduates and tell them how proud you are. After all, they’ve done something really big, whether they are graduating from high school, college or some other training program. They are taking a step forward, making themselves better, and working to be the best person they can be. This is the time of year to celebrate your family and friends’ accomplishments. So, I would like to take a minute to say: Chloe, I am so proud of you. You are awesome. I couldn’t be more happy with the young lady you are today. I hope you have an awesome day and remember, celebrate! Of course if you have any real estate questions, please be sure to reach out. I am happy to help you!
