Cody Royle is the Head Coach of AFL Team Canada, the men's national team for Australian Rules Football. He was born and raised in Australia, but has lived in Canada for over a decade now. Cody has spent the last number of years researching, interviewing, and writing about leadership, culture, and performance. As a result he is the author of two books on these subjects, Where Others Won't and The Tough Stuff. In addition he has his own podcast titled, Where Others Won't, where he has interviewed the likes of Joe Dumars, Adam Grant, Patti McCord, Michael Gervais, James Kerr, Rasmus Ankersen, Tony Granato and Peter DeBoer. Our discussion with Cody validated a lot of what our experiences and assumptions have been about coaching. Cody provided both anecdotal as well as empirical evidence to support the concept that coaches need to be high performers themselves, which in turn allows for their athletes to achieve peak performance. This self-care included nutrition, sleep, fitness, and most importantly in having someone to work with, a listening partner, who is outside of the inner circle who has no judgement, and is totally impartial. Cody's discussion is a great kick off to season 3 of the Beyond the X's and O's Podcast. Listeners are sure to take away numerous insights on how to be an effective coach and leader with today's athlete. Enjoy the discussion. Find out more about Cody at: https://www.codyroyle.com/

Thanks for joining us for today’s panel on Creating Culture During Uncertainty. I have been fortunate to chat with over 150 remarkable people on my Intentional Performers Podcast. These people have overcome adversity, thought deeply about leadership, and have setup intentional lives for themselves to perform at their best. The coronavirus has created challenges for so many throughout the world and it is my hope that these panel discussions will help those in need. While everyone on the panel has tremendous expertise, I also want to note that what we are going through is truly unprecedented and there may be questions that the panelists don’t have the answer to. That’s ok. This isn’t designed to give you the answer to every question you have, instead, it’s designed to have you think deeply about how you can handle this challenging time. Bio’s Below. This week’s inspiring guests are Claude Silver, Chief Heart Officer at VaynerMedia, and Cody Royle, author, podcaster and head coach of the AFL Team Canada. Host Kevin Monroe is excited that they both are travelers on the Road Less Traveled. They chat about creating a workplace culture that helps people grow. One of the most enlightening challenges of the Gratitude Challenge, Kevin says, is Phone-A-Friend. You ask someone else, If you were me, what would you be grateful for? Kevin poses that very question to Claude and Cody. They bring tears to each other’s eyes with their answers. The #1 request Claude hears from employees is “Help me grow.” This is what people are actually saying when they ask for feedback or when they want to improve their skills, she says. Along their journey, they’re going to experience many micro-journeys - some successes, some failures - and that is what they’ll remember in life. People want to get from point A to point B. As a leader, what are you doing to coach and mentor to get there? Cody is happy that the conversation is moving away from management towards coaching and mastery. The sports world can teach us so much about this, he says. When you master your craft, you notice that the game slows down, Cody says. The coach’s job is to get the athlete to reach that point by honing skill as well as removing barriers. Kevin finds this a beautiful description of the idea of mastery. He comments that the game slows down because you’ve grown and developed your skill, so you are now able to show up in the environment differently. Claude says you can help others grow by creating an environment of psychological safety. Be real, inspire them and live by example so that they feel comfortable to talk about anything with you. She shares a game she uses with employees that opens them up and helps them to talk about what matters to them personally. Cody adds that everyone has to be involved in creating a psychologically safe environment. We can all help each other then because we all feel safe. Kevin, Claude and Cody discuss the difference between drinking the water vs drinking the Kool Aid. Kevin asks, “What does it take for people to shift and get comfortable with a trusting, welcoming human environment?” Claude says that her company gives trust first not last. It takes time for people and interaction with other workers to accept that it truly is as good as it sounds. Cody comments that it starts with being truthful at recruitment. It’s just like dating: if what you deliver is not what you promised, things go south pretty quickly. We have the impression that someone has to stay at an organization for a long time in order to have an impact. We need to rethink this idea, Cody argues. A more productive approach is to ask, How can I help this person right now and maybe momentarily in their life, whether that's with us or not? A good coach helps his players grow so much that they don’t need him anymore, Cody says. Accept that they may leave, but ask them to give you their best while they’re with you, and be the best coach and mentor to them you can be. If you want your company culture to change, you be the change, Claude encourages listeners. Find a mentor to guide you if you need to. On this episode I share my interview with Jeremy Snape; Managing Director of Sporting Edge - a company helping leaders in sport and business to succeed. He's also a former England cricketer, MSc sport psychology, conference speaker and coach. On work-life balance Jeremy says; One of the hottest topics in performance. Everyone is debating it because it's so illusive. Trying to find balance is becoming harder and harder. I love doing what I'm doing and wouldn't change it. Partly it's about energy balance rather than time management. Background Jeremy spent 19 years as a professional cricketer. He played with some very talented people and was privileged to have represented his country. On his debut tour of India at Eden Park in front of 120, 000 people the pressure got to him. In his words, he failed in front of that huge crowd. Not being beaten by India, not being beaten by a particular difficult delivery to hit; it was the voice in his head. After years of practice and playing, no one had told him what to do with his head. He thought he was the only one under pressure. Sporting Edge This set him off on a bit of a quest to discover what could be done to support similar people in similar situations in the future. Having retired from Cricket Jeremy studied a masters degree in sports psychology and then set up Sporting Edge. Sporting Edge is high performance consultancy that works with elite sport and business teams on this winning mindset. Jeremy has worked with Shane Warne in the IPL, South Africa Rugby and Eddie Jones and England Rugby, Most recently he has worked with Pep Guardiola at Man City. Failure When you're playing international sport, with lots of cameras on you it's pretty transparent and you have to be honest. In your own mind you know if it's a technical issue, a fear or lack of skill. Failure has been my best teacher. Every step of the way during his career has been failure. It's been more like snakes and ladders; using the motivation as fuel to navigate choices. It's definitely been a key driver in his career. The Game of LeadershipTo win today we have to treat our top talent as team players, but how can we create a culture of high-performing teams that actually work? If we now refer to our employees as team mates, then maybe we should know how high-performing teams actually work. Cody Royal solves that… He's the Cody Royle: The Sports-Business Guy and he offers not only a look behind the curtain of pro sports, but a walk through what's really going on that makes a pro team excel, and how we can mirror this in business. Cody wants to bring the business of sports out of the 'motivation' category, and place it squarely at the centre of mainstream business discussion. He is the Head Coach of AFL Team Canada, and Author of the hit sports business book WOW “Where Others Won’t."Cody's consulting focus is on recruitment, leadership, culture and high-performance.In this fascinating interview Cody Royle busts 3 mainstream myths: Myth 1: Retention is an effective measure of business health. The reality...tune inMyth 2: Your team must adapt to you and your leadership style. The reality...tune inMyth 3: Culture is a set thing that can be maintained irregularly. The reality...tune inCody Royle has coached professionally in Australia while always working in sync with corporate organizations. It was in these dual roles that he got to see the gap he could fill. As Head Coach of AFL Team Canada, he was building a high-performing culture on the weekends, then working in the banking world Monday-Friday, he saw that his manager and mangers throughout showed mastery at maintaining a low-performing culture. This is when he realized that he needed to write his latest book: Where Others Won't. The focus is in bringing proven high-performance ideas to the forefront of business discussion. Cody then spent a year interviewing execs, coaches and players from the NFL, NBA, MLS, English Premier League, AFL and many other sports, as well as Founders/CEOs from a range of high-performing Canadian companies.
