In this episode, I sat down with Johnny Cooper to tackle a big question: Who is your ideal client? If you're like most business owners, you've probably wrestled with this at some point, worrying about whether narrowing your focus means missing out on other opportunities. Johnny, who runs the popular community Johnny Hates Marketing, had a refreshingly straightforward take on the subject. With his British wit and practical insights, he laid out a simple approach to targeting the right people without overcomplicating things or getting stuck in “what-if” thinking. Here are the big takeaways from our conversation: The Value of Defining an Ideal Client: Aiming to please everyone dilutes a brand's appeal. Instead, identifying a specific group with distinct needs creates a stronger, more targeted message. Overcoming Fear of Exclusion: Business owners often fear losing out on clients if they narrow their focus. Defining an ideal client doesn't exclude others—it simply helps businesses attract the most compatible clients. Adjustments can be made over time if necessary. Johnny's Three-Legged Stool for Ideal Clients: He outlines three essential traits for an ideal client: They have a pressing, significant problem you can solve. They are visible or identifiable by certain markers, making it easy to connect with them. They have the financial means to invest in your services. Simplicity in Targeting: Take a straightforward approach, avoid over-complication and make adjustments If you've enjoyed this conversation sign up for a weekly newsletter get links to episodes you might have missed and other resources for your business https://morethanafewwords.com/avoid-fomo/

In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with Business Coach and Mentor, Jonny Cooper.Jonny's unique perspective on marketing, especially for online solopreneurs, is a breath of fresh air in an industry often seen as a necessary evil. The name "Jonny Hates Marketing" was born during a podcast interview where we discussed marketing practices that lacked respect. Johnny realized that many of his community members shared his sentiment, viewing marketing as a pain and a necessary evil. But Jonny's hatred for marketing isn't about the concept itself but how it's often executed.Jonny believes marketing should be about solving someone's problem rather than self-promotion. He quotes Seth Godin's definition of marketing as the generous act of solving someone's problem. This approach requires a deep understanding of your ideal client's challenges, hopes, and dreams. One of the critical points Johnny emphasizes is the importance of building communities and creating a sense of belonging for ideal clients. When people feel that people like them work with a particular service provider, they will likely trust and believe in that provider's products or services.Johnny works with coaches and therapists either starting their businesses or struggling to attract clients. He helps them clarify what they do in simple terms, identify their target audience, and develop their signature programs or offers.Key Points from the Episode:Jonny Cooper's work and why he hates marketingFocusing on working with online solopreneurs (coaches, therapists, consultants)How the name "Johnny Hates Marketing" came aboutMarketing as solving someone's problem rather than self-promotionImportance of understanding ideal clients and their challenges, hopes, and dreamsBuilding communities and creating a sense of belonging for ideal clientsHelping coaches and therapists clarify what they do, identify target audience, and develop signature programs/offersThree pillars of online therapy or coaching: what, who, and howRecommendations for taking action: reviewing language and copy, understanding the audience, sharing client transformationsAbout Jonny Cooper:Jonny Cooper is a British author, accomplished piano player, and international racing driver. When it comes to finding your ideal client Jonny Cooper thinks of the process like a three legged stool. You need all three pieces. Without one of the three, the stool falls over. The first one is to identify a type of person for whom we can solve a big expensive problem. This should be someone who's suffering with something really important to them, a life changing challenge we can solve for them. Next, your ideal client needs to be visible, with identifiable characteristics. It's no use saying you help stressed out middle-aged women who are feeling a bit stuck because people don't wander around with a badge saying I'm feeling a bit stuck. That's where demographic criteria can help. The third criteria is the group you identify must be able to pay you.

Today we spoke with Professor Brendan Kelly - Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin and Consultant Psychiatrist at Tallaght University Hospital Dr Brendan Kelly is a medical doctor who has specialised in psychiatry. His research interests include the epidemiology of psychosis, mental health services, the history of psychiatry, and human rights in mental health. He is most interested in the extent to which persons with mental illness participate in civic and social life, and the barriers they and their families face in exercising their rights, including economic and social rights. Brendan contributes frequently to print and broadcast media and writes regularly for the medical press. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry and has a new book called 'In Search of Madness: A Psychiatrist's Travels Through the History of Mental Illness', following the success of 'The Science of Happiness: The Six Principles of a Happy Life and the Seven Strategies for Achieving It'; reminds us of our chat with Dr Tim Sharp, #132. Brendan compared psychology and psychiatry for us, and where they compliment each other in practice. We asked why Brendan took this career path...what it is about this profession that stimulates him...and various types of babble! He discussed how psychiatry has evolved globally and in Ireland from the Shutter Island perception of lobotomies to new ways of treating people...and how we are still learning about mental health, neuroscience and mental illness all the time. There are so many questions to be answered! ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Episode Highlights

Jonny Cooper is a lifetime entrepreneur, having built a financial business from zero to 8-figures before selling to a public company in 2003. Since then, Jonny "fell into" coaching through being asked for advice on growth and exit strategies by former clients and his wider network. He attributes the spectacular success of his early venture to his ability to define a clear and simple marketing message, and in identifying and engaging with an audience for that message. For the last 15 years, Jonny's been coaching entrepreneurs and business owners large and small in the three principles of what he calls Effortless Marketing - Awareness > Interest > Engagement. In 2017, Jonny launched The Success Party with the following Massive Transformative Purpose: "My MTP with The Success Party is to empower 100,000 entrepreneurs by 2025 with the principles of Effortless Marketing, reducing stress and creating more impact around the world." He launched The Jonny Hates marketing podcast in October 2017, with Season 1 promising to bring his unique philosophies to life with humour and passion. In Jonny's words from The Success Party homepage: “We're alive at a point in history where there is more opportunity to thrive than ever before. Digital tools and access to universal connectivity provide us with everything we could need to build an exponential business, and a life of our wildest dreams. Yet too often we find ourselves stifled by procrastination, fear and overwhelm. Overwhelm from too much information. Overwhelm from social media noise. Overwhelm from the death of traditional marketing. Overwhelm from the scale of opportunity. The antidote to all that is clarity: Clarity of Thought Clarity of Ideas Clarity of Action" As Jonny says - Let's Get On With It!
