In episode #302, we revisit one of our best talks from last year's TCS Live coaching conference from Cody Royle. Royle is a coach to some of the most accomplished coaches across multiple sports, along with being the author of three books, The Tough Stuff, Where Others Won't and his latest, Second Set of Eyes. He was a coach himself and has pivoted to providing coaches the sounding board and observations that nudge them towards discovering the best version of themselves. In his talk, “Coaches are Performers, Too,” Royle provides tremendous insight into the importance of coaches not possessing ego, who are willing to be coached themselves. He also provides a system that supports coaches and helps them in situations in which they are experiencing negative mental health symptoms or early burn out.  Listen as he shares why coaches are the greatest source of competitive advantage, how to improve the three primary skills of leadership and why even the best coaches need coaching.

His coaching focuses on the performance and well-being of coaches so that they have access to their best coaching skills when they need them the most. Some of Cody's quotes: “I believe the greatest source of competitive advantage available in professional sports is the optimization of the head coach.” “While we scrounge around for a new squat technique to try to uncover a 0.01 per cent improvement in an athlete, I believe there are multiple percentage points of talent sitting dormant within our head coaches.” “To realize this untapped potential requires a shift in our thinking. We must begin to think of coaches as performers. We must appreciate what a coaching performance entails. We must begin to seek better coaching, not more coaching.” This is why I'm so excited to have Cody on, as he is leading the way in this space. Enter today's guest, Cody Royle, a coach who's dedicated his entire focus on improving other coaches through the ‘user experience' of coaching. Cody's coaching career has taken him from playing Rugby in his home of Canberra, Australia, all the way to Toronto, Canada where he currently resides. During this time, Cody saw the opportunity to help leaders in both the sports world and business world. He met and interviewed hundreds of coaches around the world, and compiled much of his learnings into his first book Where Others Won't: Taking People Innovation from the Locker Room to the Board Room. The success of the book led to Cody hosting a podcast of the same name, and two other books The Tough Stuff: Seven Hard Truths about Being a Head Coach and Second Set of Eyes: How Great Coaches Become Champions. Cody Royle is the Head Coach of AFL Team Canada, the men's national team for Australian Rules Football. He was born and raised in Australia, but has lived in Canada for over a decade now. Cody has spent the last number of years researching, interviewing, and writing about leadership, culture, and performance. As a result he is the author of two books on these subjects, Where Others Won't and The Tough Stuff. In addition he has his own podcast titled, Where Others Won't, where he has interviewed the likes of Joe Dumars, Adam Grant, Patti McCord, Michael Gervais, James Kerr, Rasmus Ankersen, Tony Granato and Peter DeBoer. Our discussion with Cody validated a lot of what our experiences and assumptions have been about coaching. Cody provided both anecdotal as well as empirical evidence to support the concept that coaches need to be high performers themselves, which in turn allows for their athletes to achieve peak performance. This self-care included nutrition, sleep, fitness, and most importantly in having someone to work with, a listening partner, who is outside of the inner circle who has no judgement, and is totally impartial. Cody's discussion is a great kick off to season 3 of the Beyond the X's and O's Podcast. Listeners are sure to take away numerous insights on how to be an effective coach and leader with today's athlete. Enjoy the discussion. Find out more about Cody at: https://www.codyroyle.com/
