Water is the great equalizer. For most, it's where our true limits are found, tested and overcome. Where failure becomes the stepping stone to greatness. In this episode, PJ Nestler, the Director of Performance at XPT: Extreme Performance Training, joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff on the final day of the 2023 Sandlot Jax and GORUCK Games to share how the highest achievers embrace discomfort to win no matter the challenge. PJ coaches athletes in the NFL, NHL, MLB and UFC and reveals the secrets behind XPT's unique training philosophy including their Performance Model of Breath, Move, Recover, Fuel & Connect. Founded by elite athletes Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reese, XPT puts water at the center of their training model, forcing athletes to face their fears early and often to build a foundation of hard work and resilience aimed at dealing with everyday life.PJ also illustrates how making gains requires a deliberate process, variation in our training and a focus on building connections with ourselves, others and purpose beyond our own goals. We can be great at one thing, but versatility across many things is the key to longevity and overall health. Learn more about XPT and PJ Nestler on the web or follow them on social media. Today we spoke with Niamh Brady - Productivity Coach, creator of the Better Workday programme, and author of ‘Remote Working Essentials' Niamh stood out to us at the recent IBEC KeepWell Summit 2022 in Croke Park - her clarity of thought and simplicity of message is a rare thing these days. Her mission is to help create a better workday for professionals worldwide, with her areas of focus being wellbeing and productivity in the workplace...we love this at Hauora! We unpacked her transition from employment to being a self-employed business owner, and when she recognised she needed that change. She is considered a thought leader around Burnout in Ireland - and shed light on early identifiers of it, and the story of the truck that caused her to look closely at her work - life balance. Niamh spoke about boundaries, working from home, and its challenges for working women and men (especially those with young families), work intensity during a typical day and week, fallow fridays - and the necessity of taking genuine time off from work to recharge...with a plan around the year being essential. This was jam-packed with actionable tools, and simple pieces of advice - enjoy! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights
Today we spoke with Craig White - Transformational Men's Coach and Elite Sports Consultant Craig is a high performance consultant for World Rugby, supporting tier 2 nations like Chile, who recently beat the USA to qualify for RWC 2023. He is a mentor to elite performance coaches and teams and the founder of 'Men Without Masks', a transformation programme and community. Craig was the WRU National Squad Physical Performance Manager, a strength and conditioning coach for the British and Irish Lions in 2005 and 2009, and has worked for other teams like Leicester Tigers, Wasps and the IRFU. Craig shared his story for us today, his journey of self-discovery and change...from high performance rugby, to yoga and meditation...and Men Without Masks - and what is the essence of this movement. Craig has been searching to understand how to optimise performance; his quest has taken him from the gym and rugby field, to the Yoga Ashrams of India, the jungles of South America, and the four corners of the world. Compassion and love come through this dialogue...and vulnerability, echoes of our recent chat with Cameron Schwab. Craig is impacting many - understand why today. You will leave this conversation with something to think about! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights
Today we spoke with Ben Darwin - Director Gain Line Analytics, Former Australia Pro Rugby Player and Coac. Ben had to retire from professional rugby prematurely due to a severe neck injury. Here's the story about what he's done since, and why he went this way...examining team cohesion and teamwork indices that contribute to consistent winning and on-field success. Ben propped for the Brumbies and the Wallabies, before embarking on analytics and forward coach positions with teams such as Western Force, Melbourne Rebels and Suntory in Japan. His company, Gain Line, founded in 2013, is changing the game around data analytics revealing that great teams are the product of the connections and linkages within. There is a wonderful dialogue around the structural layers that drive cohesion in teams, namely shared experiences, combinations and the overarching system - one for pro sport and business. As distinct from other operations and management consultancies in the industry, Gain Line places a strong focus on data analysis and quantitative research. We really appreciate this as the solutions are backed by evidence and real-world experience, like our worlds in physio and sports medicine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights
Today we spoke with John O'Regan - International ultrarunner, Martial artist, and Running coach John has conquered 7 marathons on 7 continents. This is a story of how a recreational runner learned about his body, studied physiology, and educated himself on the importance of preparation and planning…to conquer remarkable running feats, ultimately representing Ireland in several categories now. He competes in ultratrail, 100k and 24 hour and has a podcast called 'No Finish Line'. John defined ultrarunning for us and discussed why this sport is not crazy - it is about passion. He loves to run and loves where it brings him. Hear about a journey from the Marathon des Sables to Swedish survival training, to the Yukon, Poles - and what's next. John leaned into resilience, how to build it…and how to overcome the moment after the race, when you feel low - when the race is over. We learned about the value of discipline and sticking to a course for a specific goal, and how to listen to your body when you are physically and mentally challenging yourself. This was inspiring stuff! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights

My guest today is PJ Nestler, a human performance specialist with over a decade of experience training top athletes and fighters for competition. What I love about PJ's approach is his ability to deconstruct a system, figure out what is not working or working, and then put together a cohesive plan. He gives a wonderful overview on how to approach reaching your fitness goals and how you systematically improve one area of training over another and then put it together. PJ is the Director of Performance at XPT, and I have had the great privilege of not only knowing him as a person but working with him. PJ Nestler is my guest this week on the podcast. PJ is a performance coach that Laird and I have the great fortune of working with, and I thought it would be a good idea to talk with him before the Holiday slam, and New Years resolution time. The idea was that we would talk lists and make all kinds of "suggestions" but PJ got down and dirty on getting honest with ourselves. This show is about the Holidays but really it's about everyday. In fact it's about TODAY and RIGHT NOW. This talk was an important reminder for me and I didn't try to control it I just went where the conversation wanted to go. Thoughts on Coach PJ Nestler podcast with Chris and James
PJ Nestler Interview from Episode 60.
How much in your life do you do that just sucks or you go out of your way to avoid? For the most part we live in or very close to, states of underlying fear, overwhelm and anxiety and they affect our ability to live in our potential and take ourselves to another level. It isn't the removal of the situations which cause these states that is the key but rather developing the ability to stay calm within ourselves and adapt to the situation which presents itself and move through it with the minimum amount of friction. And we can do this with the right training, the right people around us and as our mentor Tony Molina says, when we have got to the point where we know that change is required and we no longer want to go on living the way we are. And it is under that premise that we release this weeks conversation with performance director for the performance and longevity protocol XPT, Coach PJ Nestler. We have watched XPT develop for a few years now and with two of our good friends @kimmy.moss and @richienorton_ XPT instructors we were delighted to sit with PJ and talk through what the XPT system is, what it can do for individuals and how we have the ability to continuously adapt ourselves to overcome our perceived limits and remain calm in the face of a storm. On the physical surface level we love XPT for its combination of underwater pool training, sauna and ice bath practices and the full range of breathing practices and more, which in and of themselves are great fun to test yourself surrounded by other like minds. But what holds the eternal appeal for us with XPT is the way PJ and the founders Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece think about life, performance and potential. It connects and resonates with our own views on life, performance and potential and gives another flavour and blend of how physical movement, ice, sauna, breathwork can combine to unlock the potential we all have within us, and the key to unlocking many of the doors is to learn and practice the skills which diffuse the emotions that arise when we face the things which we are so accustomed to running away from.
Episode 60 Menace and The Man Show! We return from a few weeks off for the holidays, we are joined by recently retired UFC fighter Pat Cummins & coach PJ Nestler. We open the show catching up on what happened while we were on hiatus. We talk about the holidays, we talk about Dennis Bermudez day in December, recap UFC 245 a little bit, recap Frankie Edgar vs Korean Zombie, ref Marc Goddard, Rampage vs Fedor, fighter of the year 2019, what could be next for Henry Cejudo, recent statements made by Joanna Jedrzejczyk & much more. About 52:15 we get Pat Cummins on. We talk to Pat about his bromance with Menace, bike riding, recently retiring from the fight game, going to do gymnastics with Menace, taking Menace to the Korean spas, training at the UFC PI, being a legend in the gym competing with some of the best in the world, getting stiffed on fight bonuses, the highs & lows of the fight game, what he plans on doing post fighting, foot sweeping Menace's girl and much more. Always some laughs when Pat joins the show. Around 1:29:52 we are joined by coach PJ Nestler. PJ is a world renowned human performance specialist who has worked with a lot of world class athletes from all around the world. We talk to PJ about what he does with athletes, he drops a lot of fitness knowledge, the difference between MMA fighters & other athletes, the always evolving science of fitness, athletes working on the mental side of things, the importance of working on your breathing, his time working with Menace, his work with XPT Life and much more. Hope you enjoy!

PJ is the Director of Performance for XPT which is a performance lifestyle company focused on breath, movement, & recovery methods developed by Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece. PJ has over 12 years of experience coaching athletes from all over the world.
Super excited for this week's show, I've got Mr. P.J. Nestler joining me. P.J. is the director of performance at XPT, Extreme Performance Training. If you are not familiar check out XPTlife.com and listen to the rest of this podcast, because P.J. is going to fill you in on what XPT life is all about. First, let me tell you a little bit about XPT and my experience with it. I got introduced to XPT through a buddy of mine named Justin Singer, he owns Mechanics Calisthenics down here in Houston, Texas. He is also a certified XPT coach. He introduced me to P.J. when P.J. was in town, we did a breath work class together. We actually hung out with Rob O'Neill, a Navy Seal who took down Osama Bin Laden as well, had some good times together. XPT was founded by Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reese. If you think about the quintessential midlife male you've got to talk about Laird Hamilton. Big wave surfer, father, husband, entrepreneur, risk-taker, super fit guy, super spiritual guy, awesome stuff. Pick up his new book Liferiderand check out more on Laird at XPTlife.com. Let's talk a little bit about P.J. too, because he's going to fill us in on XPT, his philosophy, what all this stuff means. He is a human performance specialist with over a decade of experience preparing top athletes for competition. His life mission is to help athletes, coaches, and guys like us realize their true potential. He's been a leader in sports performance training for years, he's worked with dozens of athletes from the NFL, NHL, Major League Baseball, over 100 fighters including multiple Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champions, top 10 ranked UFC fighters. He is out there raising the bar for fitness and lifestyle professionals with XPT. XPT is about pushing your body to readapt. This is a program that's rooted in dynamic stressors and human adaptation. The idea being to maintain a well-balanced body and mind. It's a lifestyle. If you want to get out there and go paddle boarding, go do it. If you want to swim underwater holding dumbbells, go do it. The idea with XPT, and what Laird Hamilton says, is “Don't be a liability”. Be flexible enough to be able to jump into any new activity presented to you and forget any limitations or negative construct holding you back. And that's how you live. Sustainable, longevity-based, performance-based fitness. The ability to get up and do what you need to do, when you need to do it, when you want to do it. It's about breathing, it's about moving, it's about recovering. My personal regimen right now, consists of a lot of XPT. Constantly mixing it up, trying different things, moving a little bit better. Listening to my body, recovering a little smarter. As I get older I start to realize what's most important, and that's feeling good, having fun, being able to do the things that I want to do. So let's get into this XPT life, XPT lifestyle story, learn a little bit more about it and learn more about P.J. Nestler, here on the Midlife Male Podcast.

In this episode, I talk with human performance specialist PJ Nestler. Over the past 10 years, PJ has trained dozens of professional athletes, including several Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champions and Top 10 ranked UFC fighters. PJ is also the Director of Performance at XPT Life, founded by Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece. PJ lives by a mantra: “Don't talk about it, be about it.” Makes sense and sounds pretty badass, but what does it even mean? It's not just a saying, it's the way he lives his life. If he makes a commitment, he keeps it. If he sets a goal, he figures out a way to do it. If he says he'll be somewhere - even if he doesn't want to go - he'll be there. Not only has this mantra helped PJ, but he thinks it's a massive differentiator for anyone who wants to be great. Most athletes come to him with the goal of being the best in the world but “9/10 people are lying to themselves.” They don't put in the obsessive, disciplined work to get there. They don't focus on all of the small things. Put simply, they may talk about it but they aren't being about it. If you're early in your career and struggling, if you have ambitious dreams you're chasing, give this one a listen. And if you like what you hear, tell a friend and help us to share the message.
