The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery RESPONSIBLE HUSTLING! The worst of hustle culture is a toxic, mentally straining, alpha-bullshit race in which carnage is left in a trail behind the winner. Whatever winning is. The best of it is in the drive to continually innovate and to respond to need. It's not that strategic, but it gets things done and it moves things on. Sometimes that is exactly the energy needed to start something. My question to people in businesses and charities listening to this - what can you do to harness more of the best of it, when you're driving forward impact, whilst avoiding the negative behaviours? It doesn't make me an elite runner but it is a challenge, and it is hard, and I did achieve it. I got to the end of it and I was like, uh alright, and I stopped running. Just stopped running last year. And actually I got a lot of joy from running. But the goal was frustrating for me. Setting goals is a frustrating behaviour.” “I don't actually believe in building goals, I believe in building habits. I think the problem with goals are, as soon as you hit them you're not satisfied. When you build a habit, you start to learn about it as you go. Building habits leads to excellence and greater outcomes than you would've had initially if you'd just set yourself a goal.” “There's a lot of rubbish people out there, I'm not going to lie.” “If I retired tomorrow and left the startup world, my hope is that no-one would feel the impact, they'd just carry on. And that's not because I'm insignificant, it's because I've done a good enough job of preparing people to do their jobs independently.” The Army Reserve https://www.army.mod.uk/who-we-are/the-army-reserve/ “It sounds so obvious but people forget about it all the time: communicate for your audience. Stop talking where your audience isn't.” “I like hustle culture. I'd use the analogy of an athlete. Do you think anyone said to Kobe Bryant, when he was turning up in the gym at 4am before he went training, they said aw mate, you're working too hard, you're just training too hard. It's bollocks, no-one's saying to him afterwards, you're practising too much, you're getting too good at this. No-one says that. But the thing is, that's his choice. No-one's going to tell a musician how often they can play, that's their choice. But for some reason we have a problem with people doing it in business and we have to tell people how much they can work. Fuck you. If I want to work from 5am til 10pm that's my choice. And if I want the outcomes that I'm trying to achieve, I have to. And it may not be great for my work life balance, but it's my choice. It's not hustle culture, it's hustle choice.” “Fuckin' high-five.” ----------- This episode was recorded in January 2023 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts For more visit alwayspossible.co.uk

In the very first episode of Rugby Pod sessions, Andy Rowe interviewed Joe Marler during one of his preseasons at Quins and found out a bit more about the England and British and Irish Lions prop. From how he got into rugby, all the way to the "pinnacle" of his career, sitting on the wet tarmac in Wellington Harbour eating a late-night snack, we got an insight into one of the biggest characters in the modern game. We also hear a few cracking stories from the Lions Tour and the mid-week Veg, including sinking pints with Rory Best, an awkward match review session with George Kruis, and an expensive game of credit card roulette. Today we spoke with Niamh Brady - Productivity Coach, creator of the Better Workday programme, and author of ‘Remote Working Essentials' Niamh stood out to us at the recent IBEC KeepWell Summit 2022 in Croke Park - her clarity of thought and simplicity of message is a rare thing these days. Her mission is to help create a better workday for professionals worldwide, with her areas of focus being wellbeing and productivity in the workplace...we love this at Hauora! We unpacked her transition from employment to being a self-employed business owner, and when she recognised she needed that change. She is considered a thought leader around Burnout in Ireland - and shed light on early identifiers of it, and the story of the truck that caused her to look closely at her work - life balance. Niamh spoke about boundaries, working from home, and its challenges for working women and men (especially those with young families), work intensity during a typical day and week, fallow fridays - and the necessity of taking genuine time off from work to recharge...with a plan around the year being essential. Today we spoke with Craig White - Transformational Men's Coach and Elite Sports Consultant Craig is a high performance consultant for World Rugby, supporting tier 2 nations like Chile, who recently beat the USA to qualify for RWC 2023. He is a mentor to elite performance coaches and teams and the founder of 'Men Without Masks', a transformation programme and community. Craig was the WRU National Squad Physical Performance Manager, a strength and conditioning coach for the British and Irish Lions in 2005 and 2009, and has worked for other teams like Leicester Tigers, Wasps and the IRFU. Craig shared his story for us today, his journey of self-discovery and change...from high performance rugby, to yoga and meditation...and Men Without Masks - and what is the essence of this movement. Craig has been searching to understand how to optimise performance; his quest has taken him from the gym and rugby field, to the Yoga Ashrams of India, the jungles of South America, and the four corners of the world. Today we spoke with Ben Darwin - Director Gain Line Analytics, Former Australia Pro Rugby Player and Coac. Ben had to retire from professional rugby prematurely due to a severe neck injury. Here's the story about what he's done since, and why he went this way...examining team cohesion and teamwork indices that contribute to consistent winning and on-field success. Ben propped for the Brumbies and the Wallabies, before embarking on analytics and forward coach positions with teams such as Western Force, Melbourne Rebels and Suntory in Japan. His company, Gain Line, founded in 2013, is changing the game around data analytics revealing that great teams are the product of the connections and linkages within. There is a wonderful dialogue around the structural layers that drive cohesion in teams, namely shared experiences, combinations and the overarching system - one for pro sport and business. As distinct from other operations and management consultancies in the industry, Gain Line places a strong focus on data analysis and quantitative research. We really appreciate this as the solutions are backed by evidence and real-world experience, like our worlds in physio and sports medicine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights
Today we spoke with John O'Regan - International ultrarunner, Martial artist, and Running coach John has conquered 7 marathons on 7 continents. He competes in ultratrail, 100k and 24 hour and has a podcast called 'No Finish Line'. John defined ultrarunning for us and discussed why this sport is not crazy - it is about passion. He loves to run and loves where it brings him. Hear about a journey from the Marathon des Sables to Swedish survival training, to the Yukon, Poles - and what's next. John leaned into resilience, how to build it…and how to overcome the moment after the race, when you feel low - when the race is over. We learned about the value of discipline and sticking to a course for a specific goal, and how to listen to your body when you are physically and mentally challenging yourself. This was inspiring stuff! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Highlights

CBD oil seems to have come from nowhere. Naturally there is a stigma around it as it is extracted from the cannabis plan. A lot of people initially view it as a something that gets you high and sloppy rather than something that can benefit you in ways that positively support a busy and stressful day to day work life.
