Mike Harrington Dishes on Sabres Woes, Granato's Future & Lindy Ruff

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Mike Harrington, longtime writer and columnist for The Buffalo News to partake in a candid discussion about the state of the team he primarily covers, the Buffalo Sabres. After showing so much promise and missing the postseason by just two points last season, Buffalo has went backwards in a lot of areas, including the standings are now a lock to miss the playoffs for a 13th consecutive season. Mike assesses several reasons why this happened with a woeful power play being one of the biggest. He also talks about how the home game environment inside the arena lacks compared to many other teams around the league, with an emphasis on the Sabres dull game day experiences not being the fault of fans. He also surmises that Buffalo should cut down on their afternoon matinee games in effort to improve the atmosphere. In the wake of New Jersey just firing former Sabres long-time coach Lindy Ruff, Mike has opinions on if he thinks Ruff reuniting with Buffalo could be a possibility if Terry Pegula does fire Don Granato after the season, citing that Ruff had interest in the Buffalo job in 2019 before then-general manager Jason Botterill chose Ralph Krueger for the job. The guys also talk about the pleasant surprise UPL has been in net and spend a little time imaging what the city of Buffalo would feel like if they finally won either a Super Bowl or Stanley Cup. That and plenty more. Was hat all das in ihm ausgelöst? Hören Sie doch selbst, was er dazu sagt!

The Buffalo Sabres Are The Worst Organization In Major Pro Sports

Moran-Alytics Podcast

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is completely fed up with the ineptitude of the Buffalo Sabres and goes on several tangents outlying why he thinks they are the worst organization not just in the NHL, but of all four major sports. Over the past few days the Sabres went to Minnesota and beat a tough Wild team in overtime on the road, only to return home and inexcusably lose to a terrible Anaheim Ducks team, a team that actually swept both games against Buffalo. It led Patrick to realizing both games are a microcosm of a Sabres organization that perennially finds ways to blow anything good they got going. Patrick backs up his case by reciting tons of notes, ranging from their woes this season and going back throughout the entire drought that sees no end in sight. Along the way he throws out a bunch of terrible free agent signings, extensions and trades GMs made, Ralph Krueger playing 30-goal scorers on fourth line and a host of Sabres from the 2015-16 that all went on to achieve great team success--- after leaving the Sabres organization. He also goes through five other major professional sports organizations that deserve consideration but arrives at the conclusion that only the New York Jets even belong in the same conversation as the Sabres. That and plenty more on today's extremely animated and opinionated episode. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatMoranTweets.

We know you all enjoy when we poke at Ralph Krueger and since it's Valentine's Day consider this our box of chocolates and roses for you because Jeff Skinner has thrown off the shackles and piled up goals (1:30). What makes that all the more fun is he's part of a legitimate top line for Buffalo joining up with Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch (16:00). But... the Sabres are still a losing team (SORRY GANG) and Mark Pysyk was just recently scratched. Something funny going on there with him and the rest of the defense? (27:30)We go off on a small tangent discussing non-Sabres NHL stuff (we got some nerve) but it's OK we'll couch it as part of hot stove talk for the trade deadline in March (40:00). As this podcast episode drops the Sabres have won all three of their games. Joe talks about several of the players that've contributed to the Sabres fast start and albeit a small sample size, if he thinks its sustainable. He also talks about how much different the team looks under Don Granato compared to when Ralph Krueger was the captain of the ship and the guys talk about if Jack Eichel actually brought toxicity to the locker room. Don Granato led the Sabres to a 9-16-3 record in his 28 games as interim head coach after taking over for a fired Ralph Krueger, including a 9-11-2 record following the team's epic 18-game winless streak.  Beyond the wins and losses many of the younger players looked considerably better under Granato, leading several fans and media including Joe to conclude Granato deserves legitimate consideration to become the permanent head coach.  Joe discusses why. However, that's greatly overshadowed by Monday's fiery Zoom pressers from several players, most notably Eichel who sounded like a franchise center incredibly open if not ready to become a former Sabres center soon.  Joe has his thoughts on Eichel's injuries this season and how the organization's handling of them has put them in a lose-lose situation with an already frustrated fan base. It's the first ever “Emergipod” edition of Talking Buffalo Podcast.   The Buffalo Sabres have fired head coach Ralph Krueger and Patrick Moran has a conversation with sportswriter Joe Yerdon about it. The winless streak reached 12 games on Tuesday night with a loss to fellow NHL doormat New Jersey and it was the last straw.  Krueger has been relieved of his head coaching duties less than two seasons into the job and with still another year and nearly $4 million remaining on his contract. Patrick and Joe discuss much of what got the Sabres and Krueger to this point, thoughts on intern head coach Don Granato, who the next coach may be, how much this currently constructed roster is even capable of improving regardless of who is coach, and plenty more. Patrick also tells the story of finding out the night before the firing that this was going on, which included him putting up a cryptic tweet before the New Jersey game was over. All this and much more.  Follow Joe on Twitter @JoeYerdon. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Twitter: @PatMoranTweets.
