In this excellent conversation from 2021, we are joined by Rasmus Ankersen (@RasmusAnkersen), an internationally known author, speaker, and film producer and one of the worlds leading experts on talent identification and development. Today he is one of the founders of Sport Republic, which is the majority shareholder of Southampton FC, where he also works as the Director of Football. He was also the co-director of football for Brentford FC of the English Premier League from 2015-2021 and Chairman of Champions League club FC Midtjylland of the Danish Super League. His 2012 book The Goldmine Effect is an incredible read and was one of the books that inspired me at the beginning of my Changing the Game Project journey, so to say that I am thrilled to have Rasmus on is an understatement. In 2021 he released a film called “The Hockey Miracle in the Middle of Nowhere,” the true story of how the small town of Herning, Denmark (pop. 50,000) sent five players to the NHL in a ten year period. No Danish player had ever made the NHL before! In that same period, the US cities of Chicago and Detroit, hockey hotbeds, each sent less than 5 players to the top of the ice hockey world. How did they do it? In our talk, Rasmus and I break down the major principles outlined in the film and speak about how you might apply these same ideas in your own community so you don't just ID the talent that shouts, but you can identify and patiently develop the talent that whispers! Please connect with Rasmus at www.RasmusAnkersen.com and grab yourself a copy of The Goldmine Effect. Does success come from luck or skill, and how do you tell the difference? One way to find an answer: think like a pro gambler does, says football executive Rasmus Ankersen. Using sports analytics to emphasize his point, Ankersen digs into the reasons why successful companies often hesitate to change until it's too late, offering data-driven lessons on how to stay ahead of your competition. This week, the TED Audio Collective is releasing a bunch of great episodes about sports, in celebration of the launch of a new podcast: Good Sport with Jody Avirgan.
Cody Royle is the Head Coach of AFL Team Canada, the men's national team for Australian Rules Football. He was born and raised in Australia, but has lived in Canada for over a decade now. Cody has spent the last number of years researching, interviewing, and writing about leadership, culture, and performance. As a result he is the author of two books on these subjects, Where Others Won't and The Tough Stuff. In addition he has his own podcast titled, Where Others Won't, where he has interviewed the likes of Joe Dumars, Adam Grant, Patti McCord, Michael Gervais, James Kerr, Rasmus Ankersen, Tony Granato and Peter DeBoer. Our discussion with Cody validated a lot of what our experiences and assumptions have been about coaching. Cody provided both anecdotal as well as empirical evidence to support the concept that coaches need to be high performers themselves, which in turn allows for their athletes to achieve peak performance. This self-care included nutrition, sleep, fitness, and most importantly in having someone to work with, a listening partner, who is outside of the inner circle who has no judgement, and is totally impartial. Cody's discussion is a great kick off to season 3 of the Beyond the X's and O's Podcast. Listeners are sure to take away numerous insights on how to be an effective coach and leader with today's athlete. Enjoy the discussion. Find out more about Cody at: https://www.codyroyle.com/
Was machen diese besser?

A great deal has happened at Southampton FC since the last episode and Ray and Kevin are back to catch up. Aside from events on the pitch - a spectacular Boxing Day win at West Ham, draws with Crystal Palace and Tottenham and an eventful Cup Game in Wales - they look at the cancelled matches against Brentford and Newcastle and, of course, the successful takeover bid by Sport Republic. A tale that involves war, spies, and sex scandals, Kevin does a deep dive on how the man with the money - Serbian media magnate Dragan Šolak - made his fortune. Also, we meet Dragan's other 'dragons' - elusive investment banker Henrik Kraft, and tech boffin Rasmus Ankersen. Tim is also in, here to look at the latest proposition of our opponents this week: the recuperated Brentford and a trip to Molineux to face a tricky Wolves side. There's also the failed product demonstration of the extra time segment, in which we see how Super 6 and FPL scores are looking, and even try our hand at some Serbian phrases to welcome in our new Balkan overlords. Don't forget to join our Fantasy Football, Super 6 and predictor leagues:
In this episode, Musa and Ryan begin with a brief roundup of some midweek results, as Romelu Lukaku returns in Chelsea's win over Spurs in the Carabao Cup and Barcelona escapes a scare in the Copa del Rey (03:07). They then discuss Southampton being taken over by a group that includes former Brentford co–director of football Rasmus Ankersen (14:17) and what this might mean for the Saints. Finally, this week saw Gianni Infantino throw out the possibility of more international tournaments, more European Super League nonsense, and Davy Pröpper citing the hectic schedule as one reason for his retirement from football at age 30. The boys discuss whether there is too much football, why federations are trying to add more, and what can be done about it (24:15). When we talk about being a champion, not too many people in professional sport can claim to understand what it takes to get to the top of the game like Wes Brown. Brown loved taekwondo and playing pickup games in the park as a kid, and didn't join his first soccer team until the age of 10. But from there he blossomed, joining Manchester United at age 12, turning pro at age 16, and eventually winning 2 Champions League titles (1999, 2008) 5 English Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and making the PFA team of the year in 2000-2001. He eventually played over 300 EPL games for Manchester United and Sunderland before finishing his career with a stint with Blackburn and in India. In our discussion today, Wes talks about the influence of role models in close proximity (we spoke about this with Rasmus Ankersen a few weeks back), as players such as Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Davis Beckham, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo all influenced his journey as a player. We speak about playing with Ronaldo, and marking Lionel Messi. We touch on his boyhood sport experiences, as well as the massive impact legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson had on him and so many players. Finally, we talk about pressure and Simone Biles, and get Wes's take on the inner game and what it takes to perform in front of millions, even billions of people, on the world's biggest sporting stage. Brentford played their final friendly of pre-season against Valencia at New Griffin Park. And an entertaining contest it was in front of 10,000 fans as Brentford grappled with VAR, disallowed goals and coming from behind to despatch their Spanish rivals We spoke to fans in ground and in the pub after the match We also spoke to Brentford Director of Football Rasmus Ankersen who gave us his thoughts on Brentford's pre-season as well as how Brentford are shaping up going into the Arsenal match on Friday
Brentford signed Frank 'The Tank' Onyeka from Danish club FC Midtjylland for a club record fee (at the time. Until they signed Kristoffer Ajer a few days later) of around €10m. This impending transfer was revealed at the Beesotted Podcast in the pub with Brentford's Directors of Football Phil Giles and Rasmus Ankersen - much to Rasmus' surprise that Beesotted had got an early sniff FCM fan Simon Hansen gives a great rundown as to what Brentford fans can expect of Onyeka. Fast. Strong. Good with the ball. Duracell bunny. Rated as one of the best, if not the best player playing in the Danish Superliga last season.

Looking for an advantage. We hear the term all the time in sports (and in life). Parents in man facets of raising their kids do all sorts of things (some legal, some not) trying to ensure the success (whatever that may mean) of their children. Personally, I know parents who paid serious money to have their kids play way above their skill level, knowing their child would rarely play in games to be a member of a higher level hockey team with hopes that in just practicing and being around higher talent kids would rub off on their child. I know parents who put their kids in programs like Kumon at a very, very young age to try to get them a leg up on school. Famously, some are currently serving time for cheating their kid's way into US colleges. Freakenomics, several years back studied birth month as an indicator of success in pro sports in "football" aka soccer. Others examined birth month and age as a factor in the NHL. You can bet, would-be parents out there definitely planned their kid's "arrival" accordingly.I'm sure you know parents who have moved from one place or another trying to help get their kids a better chance.Well, one former European athlete turned football executive has looked at location as a factor of success. Rasmus Ankersen has written numerous books and now created a movie about a town in Europe of 50,000 people that has produced 5 NHL players, outranking several North American cities in the same time frame.Ankersen looks at the factors the size of a town may play in the likelihood of success in making it in sports. This is my discussion with Rasums.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

København i skalaens modsatte ende.
With the smell of the Millwall win still very fresh, the Bees travel to South West Wales to take on Swansea City... can Brentford build on the weekend victory, or will the trip over the Severn be a bridge too far?We pick the bones over the great come-back win on Saturday, listen back to the fans in the pub, as well as what the Bees' head coach, Thomas Frank, had to say about his side's performance. We also catch up with Rasmus Ankersen, the club's co-Director of Football, for what is a very insightful chat.Julie Kissick, a Swans fan who runs the Sports Journalism degree at the University of South Wales joins us on the line to give her view on Tuesday night's Championship clash.

We all want to discover our hidden talents and make an impact with them. But how? Our guest, an ex-footballer and performance specialist, quit his job and for six intense months lived with the world's best athletes in an attempt to answer this question. Why have the best middle distance runners grown up in the same Ethiopian village? Why are the leading female golfers from South Korea? How did one athletic club in Kingston, Jamaica, succeed in producing so many world-class sprinters? Our guest presents his surprising conclusions in seven lessons on how anyone - or any business, organisation or team - can defy the many misconceptions of high performance and learn to build their own gold mine of real talent. This book is not about sport, it's about identifying and nurturing talent. In a knowledge economy, talent is a competitive advantage, but bus8ness leaders and coaches alike don't often know how to identify talent, even when it's right in front of them. We welcome the author of The Gold Mine Effect Rasmus Ankersen We discuss: The Challenge of identifying talent Why we overlook talent The child prodigy problem Traits of the best coaches How to nurture talent How parents should nurture talent The balance of parent involvement More about Rasmus here: https://www.rasmusankersen.com/

Rasmus Ankersen joins Saul to discuss his roles as Director of Football of Brentford and Chairman of FC Midtjylland in Denmark and how 'Money Ball' or the use of data has given them the ability to punch above their weight and compete with clubs with much larger budgets.
Rasmus Ankersen is a bestselling author, entrepreneur, speaker on performance development and a trusted advisor to businesses and athletes around the world. In 2012 Rasmus published The Gold Mine Effect, in which he explores how some countries and cities develop a disproportionate amount of top talent.
