They delve into the themes of Copulsky's book, American Heretics: Religious Adversaries of Liberal Order, which examines religious critiques of America's political foundations from the Revolutionary era to the present. Copulsky unpacks how various religious thinkers have rejected liberal democracy and envisioned alternative political and theological systems, including theocracy and biblically centered governance. The discussion navigates the intersections of faith, politics, and pluralism, exploring the fragility of liberal democracy and the tensions between religious liberty and political authority. The episode challenges listeners to critically examine the evolving role of religion in America's political landscape.Buy American Heretics: Religious Adversaries of Liberal Order: https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300241303/american-heretics/Guest Bio:Jerome Copulsky is a research fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveThe Declaration of Independence affirms that all human beings are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” Yet the Declaration is silent about who this Creator is. Is it the Jewish deity or the Christian God? Or is it the god of the philosophers — the blind watchmaker of the Enlightenment? The Constitution, on the other hand, doesn't mention the divine at all, except for the phrase, “Year of Our Lord.”Mainstream liberals and conservatives, whatever they may think of the silence regarding God in our founding documents, believe in the American experiment. But as Jerome E. Copulsky writes in his new book, American Heretics: Religious Adversaries of Liberal Order, throughout American history there have been those who do not, radical groups who opposed the American project, root and branch, for being liberal, as opposed to Christian. In his book, Copulsky, professor at Georgetown's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs, writes about the Loyalist churchmen who opposed the American revolution, the proslavery theologians of the 19th century, the “Theonomist” theocrats of the 20th century, and the “Integralists” of our own time.Jerome joins Shadi Hamid and Damir Marusic to discuss his book, but as often happens in Wisdom of Crowds, the conversation takes an unexpected turn. Early on, Shadi presses Jerome to specify exactly what a secular liberal Founding really means for religious practice in the public sphere. Then Shadi submits his own interpretation of the modern state as an inherently secularizing force.Damir brings the question of the secularity of the American project to bear upon current events. To what extent was the American liberal state ever “neutral”? Or is technocratic liberalism the default, unspoken “religion” of the American state? Or was it, until Donald Trump came along? And is Trump, by filling his cabinet with representatives from various American ideologies, violating liberal neutrality, or simply exposing it for the fiction that it always was?In our bonus content for paid subscribers, Jerome discusses the National Conservative movement, as exemplified by intellectuals like Patrick Deneen and Adrian Vermeule, and its influence on Vice President-elect J.D. Vance. In the second Trump term this movement will have unprecedented access to power and, Jerome argues, pose a serious challenge to — and even a “betrayal” of — the American system.Required Reading* American Heretics: Religious Adversaries of Liberal Order by Jerome E. A question has long hung over the the United States regarding the proper role of religion in public life. Those who long for a Christian America claim that the Founders intended a nation with political values and institutions shaped by Christianity. Secularists argue that those same Founders designed an enlightened republic where church and state should be kept separate. American Heretics: Religious Adversaries of Liberal Order (Yale UP, 2024), Jerome E. Copulsky examines the Americans who rejected the secularism of American society, predicted the collapse of the nation, and hoped to develop a new and decidedly Christian commonwealth. By reviewing extreme religious dissent from colonial times through the current age, Copulsky shows how these thinkers opposed the American orthodoxy of pluralist democracy on theological grounds. Their views are diametrically opposed to the idea of America as a place where multiple sects and creeds peacefully coexist. Each chapter explains a different strain of heresy, beginning with loyal Anglicans who opposed the American Revolution and ending with current National Conservatives who embrace illiberal populism in an effort to enact their vision of a Christian America. Awakening: Rising Into Consciousness How is Awakening and Rising Into Consciousness part of Quantum Spirituality? Is there a connection? My esteemed guests today, Rev. John Scott, Bishop Carlton Pearson, and Pastor D. E. Paulk say “YES.” and are here to explain it all to you. Rev Jon Scott- is three generations fundamentalist preachers who from his earliest years has always had a love of music, singing in church and connecting with people. Jon is a consummate communicator and world changer who skillfully unveils a mystery through meditation, song or inspirational message. He makes a cosmic concept of the Universe accessible and easy to understand through his visionary teachings. A man who is helping to create a better world by showing people new ways to see it. Jon receives some of his inspiration from the teachings of leaders such as Dr. Wayne Dyer, Bishop Carlton Pearson and Baba Ram Dass. He considers himself to be a lifetime student and open to all inspiration. https://firstunity.org/member/rev-jon-scott-first-lady-kerri-bell-scott/ https://firstunity.org/event/awakening-conference-2023-rising-into-consciousness/ https://firstunity.org/ Bishop Carlton Pearson- author, The Gospel of Inclusion, and Get the Hell out of My Bible , he had documentary movies ( American Heretics on Netflix) made about him , was one of the most beloved Pentecostal Christian personalities of his generation. Thousands would fill arenas and churches to hear him sing, preach and inspire. But things dramatically changed when he stood in his mega church pulpit to proclaim a new doctrine, one that declared that because of Christ, no soul will spend eternity in hell. This controversial doctrine polarized faith communities all over the world. Bishop Pearson wasn't prepared for the rejection and stones aimed at him. He lost everything: his influence, his church, his friends and finances. In a short period of time, one of the church's most beloved went from hero to zero seemingly overnight and became the most prominently titled heretic of his generation. After spending the last two decades rebuilding and rebooting his life and ministry, Carlton Pearson has emerged with a new purpose aimed to help others examine and reconsider what they believe, why they believe it, and how those beliefs add to or subtract from the quality of their lives. ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for December 8, 2019* * *Dear Folks -This is a gentle reminder that your last two opportunities to see the documentary “American Heretics” will be today, Tuesday, December 10th at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The showings will be in room 204 of the Jones Building - the same building in which Ordinary Life meets.Chris Newlin did an outstanding job this week in his presentation, “Moral Failings: Why Religion and Politics Are Tearing Us Apart.” There is no text of his talk. On the Ordinary Life website you will find the audio version of the presentation and a pdf of his presentation slides. The Jonathan Haidt TED talk he showed can be found on YouTube and is definitely worth the 17 minutes it takes to watch. One of my “take aways” from this time with Chris has to do with how important are the words we use in talking to one another - especially in talking to those who have a viewpoint that is different from our own.So, a HUGE shoutout from me to Chris Newlin for taking the time to be with us and to offer us an abundance of rich material to continue our journey forward. If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.Be well and much love,Bill KerleyTo view or download the presentation slides of the talk Chris gave, click here.To listen to or download the audio version of the talk, use the link below.
ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for December 1, 2019* * *Dear Folks -We have picked two additional times to show the documentary film “American Heretics.” In order to publicize it as widely as possible we have scheduled this for next week and not this one. The dates and times are Tuesday, December the 10th at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in J204, which is upstairs in the Jones Building. This coming week in Ordinary Life Chris Newlin will be presenting a program -Moral Failings: Why Religion and Politics Are Tearing Us Apart.I heard Chris present this program recently and was so impressed I asked him if he could come and present it to Ordinary Life. I promise you it is most valuable and educational to hear.Holly and I will co-teach again on December 22. Our topic is “Holding Hands in the Dark.” It was inspired by, among other things, one of my favorite Christmas carols - “In The Bleak Midwinter.”The Ordinary Life Christmas party is Friday, December 20. Details on the Ordinary Life website. In the talks being offered in Ordinary Life I am being guided by the documents “Reclaiming Jesus” and “Charter for Compassion.” You can find both of these on the Ordinary Life website. I chose this week as a time to offer my understanding of a phrase that I think is important if people are going to use Jesus and his teachings as a guide to navigate these prickly times. What does it mean to be “in Christ”?In my opinion the church’s obsession with cosmological dualism and individual salvation are offensive in the face of the issues that are pressing down upon us. What we are learning from evolutionary cosmology is about paradox and harmony. A favorite line of mine from the poet Basho is, “Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. See what they sought. Your experiential identity of who you are in Sacred Mystery is all that matters. I use the metaphor of entering a river as a way to think about what it might mean to take another and deeper step into the sacred. I called the talk -Shall We Gather At The River? That is a very brief summary of the talk I offered this week in Ordinary Life. As is often the case, I think the audio version is better than the text from which I spoke. You can read or download the text from which I spoke, view the presentation slides, and listen to the audio of the talk using the links below. If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.Be well and much love,Bill KerleyIn order to read or download the text of the talk, click here.In order to view or download the presentation slides, click here.In order to listen to or download the audio version of the talk, use the link below.
ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for November 24, 2019* * *Dear Folks -Sometime after Thanksgiving we will schedule two additional showings of the film “American Heretics.” I will announce those times this coming Sunday when we meet. These times will also be included in the e-mail that goes out after next Ordinary Life. There is no written text for the class that Holly Hudley and I co-taught this week. I urge you to listen to the audio version of the talk. Also, I am grateful to Tim Leatherwood for posting the audio version of the dialogue between Matt Russell and me about the film. I know that was live-streamed and am assuming this week’s audio version will also be on the website.Holly and I gave the talk we gave this title -Choosing - A Better Way to LiveBetween being stimulated by some event or some person and the time we make a response there is a moment where we have the opportunity to choose the wisest and most useful way to respond. Our culture seems more and more reactive and to encourage such behavior. Not helpful.I read the first part of the “Reclaiming Jesus” document about how racism in its various forms is a growing issue in our culture. This is what both Holly and I attempted to respond to. One of the things I did was show a brief clip of Jane Elliott asking people a stunning question. It takes less than a minute to watch. Click here. Holly spoke about liberation theology and the issue of reparations. She went into the etymology of the word and also talked about the differences between equality, equity and liberation. She showed a video of a starling murmuration as a metaphor for social change. It too is stunning. Click here to see it.I encourage you to listen to the audio and view the presentation slides as well. All available using the links below. On December 8 Chris Newlin will be presenting a program - Moral Failings: Why Religion and Politics Are Tearing Us Apart. ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for November 10, 2019* * *Dear Folks -I will let you know that Richard Rohr’s last conference is now open for registration. It will sell out. The dates for it are May 15 - 17, 2020 and it will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. You can find out more and register for it if you are interested by going to the Center for Action and Contemplation’s website - www.cac.orgWe found out that we did not have permission to post the recording of the film, American Heretics on our website and so have taken it down. We had another very large crowd watch the second part of the film and there will be two additional showings in the next two weeks at St. Paul’s. I’ll announce those times here.I have been trying to lay a foundation for the direction and purpose of the talks I hope to give in Ordinary Life going forward. The two roadblocks to our growth in responsible and relevant spirituality are “cosmological dualism” and “individual salvation.” You can go into the archives of recent talks to read more. I have also handed out hard copies of two documents that are foundational documents for the future as well. These are “Reclaiming Jesus” and “The Charter for Compassion.” Copies of these are posted on the Ordinary Life website under “resources for growth.” Please check them out. I encourage you to print them and keep copies close at hand for reference. It was during this week’s talk that I talked about “The Charter for Compassion.” I first learned about this when I met Karen Armstrong at a Jesus Seminar event in 2004. If we are to make a positive contribution in healing the various divisions that are ripping our culture and world asunder, we must “widen our circle of compassion.” This phrase comes from a passage written by Albert Einstein long before we had the evidence we now have about “evolutionary cosmology.”I have borrowed a phrase from Jim Wallace that encourages us “not to go right, not to go left, but to go deep.” We must go deeper into our selves, into the lives of each other and into the lives of those we consider “the other,” if we are to contribute to healing. Because of the context in which I am teaching, I am raising the issue of the relevance of Jesus, his life and teachings, for this venture. In this talk I borrow heavily from a piece I got from Jacqui Lewis on “the greatest story ever told.” What it means to be faithful is to love your neighbor. Everything else is commentary. Everything. That is a very brief summary of the talk I offered this week in Ordinary Life. As is often the case, I think the audio version is better than the text from which I spoke. You can read or download the text from which I spoke, view the presentation slides, and listen to the audio of the talk using the links below. If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.Be well and much love,Bill KerleyTo read or download the text of the talk, click here.To view or download the presentation slides, click here.To listen to or download the audio version of the talk, use the link below.
ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for November 3, 2019* * *Dear Folks -We had a very large group attend the viewing of the first part of the film “American Heretics.” I would say it was enthusiastically received. It certainly is well done. Several people have asked how they might be able to view it if they were unable to attend the viewing. All I can say now is that we are working on that. This film is still in distribution and has not yet been released through any streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon. We rented the film as a non-profit group and agreed to show it as an educational service. I think that the session was live-streamed this Sunday. I will try to make sure the subsequent sessions are as well. They will be at 11 a.m. on the next three consecutive Sundays. In Ordinary Life this week I did more on trying to show how "cosmological dualism" and "individual salvation" are concepts that actually impede our growth as people who can be set free to love and care for all who are and all that is. To put these two things aside can be very disturbing for some people. My contention is that in spiritual work it is good to be disturbed. In the text of the talk you can read the piece I wrote years ago on the importance of being disturbed. There is a new story that is emerging that is telling us that once all places were one place and all things were one thing. Further, this new story says that this entanglement is still true - ongoing, but true. Our cultural addiction to the notion of a “separate self” keeps us from entering into this story. Further, it causes us to see the world as a hostile place. In terms of the Christian religion the question I want to raise and explore as we go forward is, “What would it mean if Jesus were a model for being rather than an object for belief?”Near the end of this talk I introduce the statement issued by a group of prominent religious leaders. It is titled “Reclaiming Jesus.” In the Summary on the Ordinary Life website is a link to this document. Christian is back! She updates us on her travels to France and the status of her new film, “The Girl Who Wore Freedom.” A review of the new documentary “American Heretics” reveals that liberals in Hollywood are begging Christians to follow Jesus. Tim Dalrymple, the new president of Christianity Today, says white Christians need to confront Donald Trump when he takes aim at people of color. Has CT rediscovered its prophetic voice? A former missionary asks why white evangelicals are so eager to help the poor and suffering overseas but are the least likely group to welcome or help them at home? Skye says it’s because the latter makes us feel righteous, while the former requires repentance. And Phil worries that tweeting Christian values will spark a backlash—among Christians!

In spite of all the weird ways the word has been abused since the 2016 elections, I think of myself as a liberal. As a basic value, I try to be open-minded. And like many liberals, I live in a big, liberal city where I rarely meet anyone who doesn’t share my values, religious outlook, and political beliefs. As a result, like it or not, I’m in a bubble. And when I’m not being careful about it, I’m vulnerable to seeing “the Bible Belt” and the American South as one monolithic, mostly white, evangelical, anti-abortion, Christian Right-leaning mass. As some kind of living history exhibit of a past us New Yorkers have left behind. And I know lots of people in some of the same bubbles I occupy who are quick to point to religion as the cause of horrors throughout human history. People who see reason and science as progress, religion as unequivocally retrograde, and who point to data showing that people everywhere are getting less religious as a hopeful sign that humanity might be moving in the right direction. But just as it doesn’t have a monopoly on morality, religion doesn’t have a monopoly on intolerance. And reason alone can’t give us values like love and kindness. Religion’s one of many ways that people organize their lives and like everything we make, it’s subject to both our courage and our cowardice. The best and the worst of us. A recent Pew survey says that 63% of Americans believe in God. In Bible Belt states like Oklahoma, where that number is much higher, there are fierce political battles going on for control of the Christian narrative—pushback against fundamentalist interpretations of the Bible as aligned with conservative republican values. These battles, invisible to most of us out here on the coasts, are the subject of AMERICAN HERETICS, a powerful new documentary by my guests today, Jeanine and Catherine Butler. In this episode of Sacred Tension, I talk to Reverend Lori Walke: a badass lady preacher, public theologian, and social activist who is prominently featured in the new documentary American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel. We discuss her work as an activist fighting against encroaching theocracy in Oklahoma, her journey to becoming a heretical female pastor, and her work to provide sanctuary for our undocumented fellow human beings. American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel takes audiences into the buckle of Bible belt where a group of defiant Oklahomans are rising up to challenge deeply rooted fundamentalist Christian doctrine. Labeled as “heretics” for their beliefs and actions, they refuse to wield their faith as a sword sharpened by literal interpretations of the Bible. Especially those interpretations that continue to justify nationalism and hack away at landmark civil rights protections for women, minorities, immigrants, and the LGBTQ communities. These American Heretics are still interested in saving you from hell, but it’s the earthly one, where poverty, discrimination and nationalism oppress those “who are the least among us.” Directed and Produced by Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Jeanine and Catherine Butler; edited by award-winning editor Jamie Lee Godfrey (National Geographic, Newseum); and lensed by Peter Hutchens (Showtime’s “The Trade,” and Oprah Winfrey’s “Belief” series).
