Neste processo, onde ficou a esquerda? In speaking with my two guests, they shared stories of the three generations of writers in the family including, Irene's mother, Wilma, followed by my guest, Irene and her son Brendan. Brendan is an award winning graphic novel/picture book author and acquiring editor at Blackstone Publishing where he also runs the TV and Film Division even made notice of having his maternal grandmothers published books on his desk. Brendan shares that he was always supported and encouraged by his family with his passion for comic books which he started writing and drawing caricatures at a young age.In time, Irene expressed "that the family was moving in a different direction and the divorce was almost inevitable." Irene continues, "I'm highly emotionally intelligent and I finally found my tribe. I found people who spoke my language." This all occurred once she went back to school for her Masters Degree in Counseling, and later on became a social worker. Brendan raves about his childhood as a latch key kid. He loved growing up in Connecticut. And now as a father, he appreciates even more what it takes for parents to raise their children. And now he's learned even more about what his mother was going through raising the four Deneen children. Both Irene and Brendan claim to be emotionally intelligent-they are very good at listening to others, which Brendan feels that "not many people listen to one another these days." Brendan has always been there for his mom as a sounding board. Irene says " Brendan was my listening post." When she needed to talk, she call Brendan. They have a special bond for sure. They respect one another.Irene Deneen Murray: Irene Deneen Murray grew up in the 50's, an era when a woman could be a nurse, teacher or secretary. She chose teacher because it pleased her mother. In truth the first half of her life was devoted to taking care of or pleasing her mother. At age 50 having raised 4 kids in a Hollywood -worthy suburb, Irene became a divorcee and learned to love being more adventurous than she had previously ever imagined. By then she was working as a social worker having recently earned a Master's Degree in Counseling. Irene loves the natural world and has been a devoted hiker and later a biker, paddler and pretty consistently a practitioner of yoga. She continues these pastimes presently sometimes to the chagrin of her children since they may picture her falling off a cliff, rolling over in her kayak or some other catastrophe. Her children and grandchildren are her greatest achievement. She is a good observer and has insight galore but is sometimes amazed at how each of her children has developed so uniquely. Brendan Deneen is the author of the novelsThe Ninth Circle andThe Chrysalis, as well as the bestselling four-volume Night Night, Groot picture book series for Marvel/Disney. He's also the author of the middle-grade graphic novelGreen Arrow: Stranded for DC Comics; the novels Morbius: Blood Ties and Guardians of the Galaxy: Annihilation:Conquest from Marvel/Titan, and Alien: Uncivil War from 20th Century Studios/Titan. His other graphic novel work includes multiple volumes of Flash Gordon, an original Island of Misfit Toys book, and the original graphic novel Scatterbrain. In addition to his writing, Brendan has been working in the publishing and film/TV industries for twenty-five years, including development jobs with Scott Rudin Productions and Miramax, as well as editorial and book-to-film jobs with St. Martin's Press and Tor Books. He currently works at Blackstone Publishing, where he's an acquiring editor in addition to running the company's film/TV division, which he created, and where he has dozens of literary projects set up at movie studios, streamers, and networks. His short stories and essays have been published by St. Martin's Press, Reader's Digest Books, 13Thirty Press, and Necro Publications. Today's guest is Patrick Deneen, professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame and one of the most debated thinkers of our time. His book Why Liberalism Failed (Yale university press 2018) made waves in intellectual circles—not because it predicted the collapse of liberalism, but because it argued that liberalism has already won. And that's precisely why it has failed.Deneen's analysis transcends the traditional left-right divide. He argues that both camps have actually worked together to realize liberalism's grand project: freeing the individual from all traditional bonds. The right has done it through the market, the left through the state—and together they have dismantled the very communities that once held societies together. Family, local communities, religion—everything has been sacrificed on the altar of individual liberation. In Regime Change: Toward a Postliberal Future (Sentinel 2023), he deepens his critique. He describes today's elite as a technocratic aristocracy—a class that speaks of equality but ultimately serves only its own interests. Here, he draws inspiration from Christopher Lasch, who described how modern elites have isolated themselves from the people while seeing themselves as humanity's great liberators. According to Deneen, this new aristocracy has created a society where ordinary people have less and less say, even as we continue calling it a democracy. But what is the alternative? Deneen does not argue for a return to the old elite or a new meritocracy—on the contrary, he sees meritocracy itself as a central part of the problem. Instead, he envisions a leadership class deeply rooted in society, one that is not exclusively drawn from universities and metropolitan expert culture but from the very communities that liberalism has sought to dissolve. Is this a conservative dream, a populist revolt, or a realistic path forward? We discuss Deneen's ideas, how his critique challenges both the right and the left—and what might come after the liberal era.Prenumerera eller stötta Rak högerI takt med att fler blir betalande prenumeranter har Rak höger kunnat expandera med fler skribenter och mer innehåll. After chasing drug runners on the high seas as a Coast Guard officer and reporting on climate change for GlacierHub, Peter Deneen has found his true calling in the rugged landscapes of Ojai Valley. As the new Executive Director of Keep Sespe Wild, Deneen brings his distinct blend of military precision, journalistic insight, and environmental passion to one of Southern California's most precious wilderness areas. His path to conservation leadership reads like an adventure novel – surviving a mountain lion attack in Sisar Canyon, documenting the devastation of the Thomas Fire, and studying climate science at Columbia University. But it was a teenage bike crash that first connected him to the community he now serves, as a teenaged intern at the Ojai Valley News. Today, Deneen channels his diverse experience into protecting the Sespe's delicate ecosystem. From helping coordinate the Save White Sage campaign to tackle overharvesting, to addressing single-use plastic pollution, he's taking on the region's most pressing environmental challenges. As co-founder of the Sisar Canyon Run Club and board member for multiple local organizations including The CREW and Ojai Raptor Center, Deneen embodies the connection between community engagement and conservation. Join us as we explore how this Coast Guard veteran turned environmental leader is working to preserve Ojai's bioregion for future generations, one project at a time. We did not talk about Yankee clipper ships, the unexpected environmental challenges of transitioning to an all-electric future, or the evolution of baseball from the English schoolyard game of rounders. Patrick Deneen has released a new book, and predictably, Jonah has some pointed opinions on it. To critique Deneen's post-liberal vision for American society and the political right, Jonah is joined by a returning Stephanie Slade, senior editor at Reason and noted liberty-lover. With furious agreement and ornery hand-wringing, they take a deep dive into the strange world of the new right, analyzing how seriously we should take its vision for the conservative movement. They also provide a few thoughts on the state of Catholicism, what the Dobbs decision revealed about voters, and why nobody can agree about immigration. This week, Jonah Goldberg joins Eric, Dan, and Dylan to discuss his newly released review of Patrick Deneen's book, "Regime Change: Toward a Postliberal Future.” Following on the success, or at least the popularity, of his last book, “Why Liberalism Failed,” does Deneen have solutions to the problems he sees in modern society? Does his scholarship hold up under scrutiny? And is that the odor of Marxism exuding from the book—or is it just the choice to name the final chapter after the famous speech by Lenin? Is there more to it than that? (Narrator: “There's more to it than that.”) To close out, the guys comment on the passing of the novelist Cormac McCarthy and how his books understood and demonstrated the grotesque violence of man in a state of nature.Subscribe to our podcasts Patrick Deneen's Otherworldly Regime | Jonah Goldberg, Acton Institute Liberalism Isn't Rule by Elites | Stephanie Slade, Reason Magazine ‘I Don't Want to Violently Overthrow the Government.
