What do a sweltering hot day in New York City, the river flowing from the throne of God, and a river baptism service have in common? Answer: Robert Lowry's hymn, Shall We Gather at the River? Of Lowry's many hymns, this is his best known. It came about as his imagination took flight from the oppressive heat and dwelled on the "pure water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb." Over time, it has also been used, and is a symbol of, baptism services conducted at the riversides. Let us refresh ourselves as we contemplate that river of life. Grammy Award-winning baritone Lucas Meachem just released his first-ever solo album called Shall We Gather. It's a collection of American art songs that celebrate resilience and togetherness. His wife, Irina, the dynamic collaborative pianist, joins him on this album. For those of you who might not know, Lucas Meachem is one of the most in-demand opera singers right now. He opens this season at LA Opera in Tannhaüser, then later appears at the Metropolitan Opera in La Bohème, followed by London's Royal Opera House in Madama Butterfly. It's certainly one of those high-gloss, jet-set lives, but he's so down to earth. Both Irina and Lucas join me on the Classical Post podcast today where we discuss the profound questions that their album poses. For example, it makes you question: Should we connect? Should we physically be together? Should we be distanced? As Irina points out, music is here to heal and to inspire. As the performing arts continue to return and gain traction again with larger audiences around the world, this album is a poignant milestone to contemplate. It's a type of cathartic unpacking of the turbulent period we all just experienced. -- Classical Post explores the intersection of classical music, style, and wellness, diving into meaningful conversations with leading artists from an array of different backgrounds. Based in New York City, Classical Post is a touchpoint for tastemakers. Visit our website for exclusive articles or subscribe to our monthly newsletter to be notified of new content. Deathwalkers, psychopomps, ancestors--we may be alone on our final voyage, but we needn't be lonely. The Universe itself will welcome us home, just as it birthed us in the first place. Death, it turns out, is a wondrous window on life itself, and who better to remind us of this than a death doula and ritual healing practitioner. Try to Be Magical by Mason Williams The two people I met in my life who I thought were great men were Pete Seeger and Ken Kesey. Not only were they clever and could write great songs and great books, they were able to embrace all of humanity—warts and all, I guess you might say. All kinds of people would come by Ken's place and visit and talk, and they were welcome. Pete Seeger was always trying to improve the welfare of the common man. He had a broad love of humanity. One thing I learned from my friend Kesey: he used to say, “Almost everybody can be clever, but what you really want to do is be magical.” He was part of my Of Time and Rivers Flowing. He told me, “I like your river show, because not only is it very entertaining musically, it's about history and conservation of natural waterways. Those three elements make it magical.” I had a place up in Oak Ridge, and Ken lived in Pleasant Hill. I knew about him from his books, which I had read. I found out where he lived, and one day I stopped by just to introduce myself. We sat outside, and he had a parrot who was chewing wood off the side of his house. We had a couple of swigs of whiskey. I told him, “In the River Show that I am doing, since I play guitar and it's mic'd, I'm stuck behind the microphone. What I need is somebody who could be more like an actor, someone who could be on stage and move around and have some motion. Also I need comedy bits that I could engineer for him to do.” Ken was my man. He said he wanted to be an actor more than a writer. He used to act on paper. Ken had a big room upstairs in his house. Zane and Sunshine told me you could hear him talking to himself. In actuality he was being these characters he was writing about. He was thinking about what they might say to each other, moving around up there and acting out what wound up being on paper. I would write ideas for Ken the same way I wrote for The Smothers Brothers. “Here's a structure; beginning, middle, and end. You can improvise in the middle of it, any way you want to.” I wrote one piece, Shall We Gather at the River. There was a section of hymns. I said, “Ken, I want you to be the preacher and I'm going to call you Ken ‘For God's Sake' Kesey.” He used my lines as a structure, but then had some great lines of his own that he added, just as The Smothers Brothers did.
Pastor Doug Nicely and Gary begin a series of Easter hymn stories. This week they talk about the American preacher, Robert Lowry, who became a popular writer of gospel music in the mid- to late-19th century. His best-known hymns include "Shall We Gather at the River", "Christ Arose!", "How Can I Keep from Singing?" and "Nothing but the Blood of Jesus"
"Shall We Gather At The River?" by Robert Lowry. Presented by Sunny Baik (organ), Michael Ekbladh, Robert Jackson, Katy Lassiter, Jennifer Miller, Lynn Sandefur-Gardner, and Jessica Van Leer.
Fort Street Presbyterian Church Order of Worship November 15, 2020 | 11:00am Prelude “Berceuse” Louis Vierne Welcome Rev. Sarah Logemann & Rev. Garrett Mostowski Call To Worship To all who need mercy, God says, “Come to me.” To all who are living in darkness, God says, “Come out!” To all who hunger and thirst, God rains food from heaven and bubbles up springs from the earth.. To all who have too much, God calls to give to those who have too little. Let us worship, knowing God will not forget us, we are written on the palms of God’s hands. Hymn 375: Shall We Gather at the River 1 Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God? Refrain: Yes, we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God. 2 On the margin of the river, washing up its silver spray, we will walk and worship ever, all the happy golden day. (Refrain) 3 Ere we reach the shining river, lay we every burden down; grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown. (Refrain) 4 Soon we’ll reach the shining river; soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace. (Refrain) Prayer of Confession Rev. Garrett Mostowski Holy and Merciful God, you are our judge. You know the sins we hide from others: the unkind thoughts, the unspoken words of grace, the refusal to understand and empathize, the denial of mercy, the judgement. You alone know how we harbor jealousies and resentments; hoard resources; and hold prejudices, judging others. Forgive us, we pray. We seek your tender mercy, for you love us as a mother loves her little child. In this time of silence, hear the confessions of our hearts. Amen. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Hymn 353 My Hope is Built on Nothing Less 1 My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand. 2 When darkness seems to hide his face, I rest on his unchanging grace; in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. (Refrain) 3 His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. (Refrain) 4 When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found, dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. Welcome to Day 1507 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomTemperance – Humor UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your Captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1507 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30) A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22) A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny which is titled: Temperance Pastor Jeremiah, an old-time country preacher, was disturbed by the increasing amount of drinking in his county and even within the church. Pastor Jeremiah thought it was well past time to address it in a sermon. One bright and sunny Sunday morning, he was all prepared. He had all of his points lined up and backed up with Scripture. Pastor Jeremiah went through all of his points, and after about 30 minutes, he was really getting wound up about his temperance sermon with great enthusiasm. As he was getting close to the end, he wanted to drive his point home. He pointed to the congregation and shouted: “If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river.” The congregation cried, “Amen!” “And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it in the river.” The congregation cried, “Amen!” “And if I had all the whiskey and the rum in the world, I'd take it all and throw it in the river.” And the congregation cried, “Amen!” After the sermon, pastor Jeremiah sat down, exhausted, sweating, and panting. Next, Deacon Jones stood up and said: “For our closing hymn,” let us turn to page 126 and sing together, ‘Shall We Gather at the River.'”I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is from Ernest Hemmingway, “Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%205%3A18&version=NLT (Ephesians 5:18) Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. Just as you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1506 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com. I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. Thank you for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and most importantly, I am your friend as I serve you through this Wisdom-Trek podcast and journal each day. As we take this Trek of life together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen...

For this week's podcast, as we near a time of year traditionally associated with the beginning of earnest semesters of normal church service, Rev. Brian Chenowith takes an introspective look at how the forced distance of this new format of online services has created change for those who work or volunteer their time for the church. One of the many questions we must ask ourselves as we face down the further complications of the world since encountering this pandemic. ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for December 1, 2019* * *Dear Folks -We have picked two additional times to show the documentary film “American Heretics.” In order to publicize it as widely as possible we have scheduled this for next week and not this one. The dates and times are Tuesday, December the 10th at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in J204, which is upstairs in the Jones Building. This coming week in Ordinary Life Chris Newlin will be presenting a program -Moral Failings: Why Religion and Politics Are Tearing Us Apart.I heard Chris present this program recently and was so impressed I asked him if he could come and present it to Ordinary Life. I promise you it is most valuable and educational to hear.Holly and I will co-teach again on December 22. Our topic is “Holding Hands in the Dark.” It was inspired by, among other things, one of my favorite Christmas carols - “In The Bleak Midwinter.”The Ordinary Life Christmas party is Friday, December 20. Details on the Ordinary Life website. In the talks being offered in Ordinary Life I am being guided by the documents “Reclaiming Jesus” and “Charter for Compassion.” You can find both of these on the Ordinary Life website. I chose this week as a time to offer my understanding of a phrase that I think is important if people are going to use Jesus and his teachings as a guide to navigate these prickly times. What does it mean to be “in Christ”?In my opinion the church’s obsession with cosmological dualism and individual salvation are offensive in the face of the issues that are pressing down upon us. What we are learning from evolutionary cosmology is about paradox and harmony. A favorite line of mine from the poet Basho is, “Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. See what they sought. Your experiential identity of who you are in Sacred Mystery is all that matters. I use the metaphor of entering a river as a way to think about what it might mean to take another and deeper step into the sacred. I called the talk -Shall We Gather At The River? That is a very brief summary of the talk I offered this week in Ordinary Life. As is often the case, I think the audio version is better than the text from which I spoke. You can read or download the text from which I spoke, view the presentation slides, and listen to the audio of the talk using the links below. If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.Be well and much love,Bill KerleyIn order to read or download the text of the talk, click here.In order to view or download the presentation slides, click here.In order to listen to or download the audio version of the talk, use the link below.

Church is supposed to be a sacred place, but can the sanctuary remain holy when pastors are acting more like pimps than religious leaders? Sexual impropriety, financial misconduct and emotional manipulation can all be found in Bible scriptures, but they also fill headlines about today’s preachers. Roundtable with Stephanie Robinson takes on abuse in the church with men and women of the cloth. Dr. Donald Matthews, offers a test for determining whether the "pastor" or "pimp" label fits your religious leader. Reverend Brandon Crowley, pastor of Myrtle Baptist Church in Massachusetts, and Reverend Trina Evans, from Georgia’s Beulah Baptist Church get real and righteous about the challenges of shepherding a congregation in modern times. They also discuss mega churches, promiscuity, building fund lust and proper responses to church member emotional needs. No, we are not talking about your grandmother’s quiet “Shall We Gather at the River” church services. It’s time to gather at the Roundtable as Stephanie Robinson delivers hot topics, deep talk and a little bit of uplift. “A pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” Revelation 22:1-2Words & Music: Robert Lowry, 1864; first published in Happy Voices, 1865:One afternoon in July, 1864, when I was pastor at Hanson Place Baptist Church, Brooklyn, the weather was oppressively hot, and I was lying on a lounge in a state of physical exhaustion…My imagination began to take itself wings. Visions of the future passed before me with startling vividness. The imagery of the apocalypse took the form of a tableau. Brightest of all were the throne, the heavenly river, and the gathering of the saints…I began to wonder why the hymn writers had said so much about the “river of death” and so little about the “pure water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb.” As I mused, the words began to construct themselves. They came first as a queston of Christian inquiry, “Shall we gather?” Then they broke in chorus, “Yes, we’ll gather.” On this question and answer the hymn developed itself. The music came with the hymn.Robert Lowry Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God? Refrain: Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God. 2. On the margin of the river, washing up its silver spray, we will walk and worship ever, all the happy golden day. (Refrain) 3. Ere we reach the shining river, lay we every burden down; grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown. (Refrain) 4. Soon we'll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace.©2000-2011 Shiloh Worship Music COPY FREELY;This Music is copyrighted to prevent misuse, however, permission is granted soley for non-commercial copying.
