Cultivating Presence (with a Dash of Mischief): A Conversation with Mitch Davidowitz

Cultivating Presence (with a Dash of Mischief): A Conversation with Mitch Davidowitz In this episode, Traci Ruble, founder of Sidewalk Talk, sits down with longtime therapist and Vipassana practitioner Mitch Davidowitz to explore something that feels harder than ever: being present. Together, they wander into the heart of what it means to show up—truly and fully—for ourselves and others. Mitch brings decades of wisdom wrapped in humility, humor, and a touch of rascal spirit. The two dig into the medicine of deep listening, the rebellious act of slowing down, and why love and compassion aren't just soft concepts—they're radical practices in a fractured world. This conversation is part invitation, part provocation: What if staying present is the real revolution? What if mischief is a doorway to wisdom? And what if, in this wild world, just being someone who cares deeply is a contribution worth being proud of?   About Mitch Davidowitz Mitch Davidowitz, MSW, M.Ed, Ed.S. is a psychotherapist, writer, photographer and inspirational teacher known globally. His work is a confluence of his decades of intensive mindfulness training and being a clinician for the past 45 years. Mitch has trained healthcare and mental health professionals around the United States in the compassionate care of those facing loss since 1984. Mitch has appeared on radio and television to provide education about the challenges that mourners and those supporting them experience. He is currently in private practice outside of Boston, Massachusetts seeing clients nationally and globally with a wide range of issues. His approach is diverse and deeply informed by his mindfulness training. In addition to his clinical background, Mitch began intensive retreat practice in Vipassana meditation in 1974 with Anagarika Sujata. He continued these trainings extensively with Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzberg. Baba Ram Dass was also one of his primary teachers.   Episode Timeline 00:00 Introduction to Sidewalk Talk 01:04 Meet Mitch Davidowitz: Therapist and Vipasana Practitioner 04:08 The Journey to Heart-Centeredness 08:05 Love, Compassion, and Advocacy 16:58 The Power of Discipline and Meditation 21:53 The Changing Landscape of Human Suffering 25:19 Rising Anxiety and Insecurity 26:24 Guilt and Happiness Amidst Suffering 27:49 The Power of Small Acts 29:30 Introducing Playfulness and Mischief 31:03 Therapeutic Approaches and Personal Growth 36:25 The Importance of Listening 38:53 Reflections and Future Plans 45:00 Closing Thoughts and Encouragement   Standout Quotes  One can be very fierce and very strong from a place of empathy. (Mitch)   It's not that I spend my days lighting candles and sticks of incense. It's not that we don't get annoyed.  But we look and see what leads to well-being. What leads to contraction? What leads to openness and connectednes,s and what leads to estrangement?   That doesn't mean not confronting people with things that are not right, you know? It's not indifference. But it's not reactivity.  It takes a lot more strength and power to stand down and sit up and invite someone to share with you how they came to their thoughts and beliefs.   Joseph Goldstein, one of my mindfulness teachers, said just assuming the position every day at the same time awakens those mind states that we're trying to cultivate.   People are more afraid, people feel more vulnerable, and so what happens is that that is setting off and triggering other things that have happened that made them feel unsafe.  We can't save the world, but we can save the moment. We can show up in a way that restores this sense of belief in each other, of the fundamental goodness of humanity. Even though there's so much darkness, we do need to remind each other about hope and restoring the belief that good people are here available.   help bring down the suffering on the planet.   I'm helping people not to take themselves so seriously.  Carl Jung said, Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but when sitting with someone who's a human soul, just be another human soul.  Connect: Find | Mitch Davidowitz On LinkedIn: @MitchDavidowitz Facebook @MitchDavidowitz   Find | Sidewalk Talk  At sidewalk-talk.org On Instagram: @sidewalktalkorg On Twitter: @sidewalktalkorg On Facebook: @Sidewalktalksf On LinkedIn: @SidewalkTalkOrg   Find | Traci Ruble At Traciruble.com On Instagram: @TraciRubleMFT On Twitter: @TraciRubleMFT On Facebook: @TraciRubleMFT   SUBSCRIBE TO THIS PODCAST On Apple Podcasts On Google Podcasts On Spotify On YouTube

Transcend your mind by practicing observation of your thoughts, mantras, breath work, and more in this deeply relaxing meditation. This 18 minute long meditation includes elements from SadhGuru's Isha Kriya, inspiration from the letting go process by Dr. David R Hawkins, insights from the spiritual teacher Baba Ram Dass, and lessons learned from your guide, Stephanie, over the past six months. It also includes healing Hertz frequencies specifically geared for relieving pain, invoking change, activating your intuition, and returning to oneness. A special thank you to Troy Valencia for allowing us permission to use this music from his album “The Sounds of Medicine.” Listen to his full album Spotify by clicking here. We begin with the practice of observing our thoughts. Then, we will engage in breath work as your guide chants the mantra, “I am not the body, I am not even the mind”. After this, you will hum to activate your upper chakras, and then we will finish with one final mantra of “I am observing, I am loving”. This meditation is designed to help you settle into a space of remembering your purpose in this lifetime and the love that has always existed within you. There's something here that you're not accepting, that you've never received fully. And receiving It, feeling It, leaning into It, is what will get you unstuck. It's the Portal, and your attention opens It and closes It, seemingly. While you may 'think' you're in need of accepting a certain circumstance, relationship, or strong, 'negative' emotion, it's actually Love that you're not accepting. Breathe It in, and smile It out. By cultivating inner quietude through practices such as meditation, introspection, or contemplation, we create the space to listen deeply to our inner wisdom, intuition, and the subtle messages of the universe. In the silence, we transcend the noise of the ego and gain access to deeper truths and insights.   Actionable item: Dedicate a few minutes each day to sit in silence, either through meditation, nature walks, or finding a quiet space. Allow yourself to be fully present and attuned to the sounds, sensations, and thoughts that arise without judgment or attachment.   Journaling prompt: Describe a moment when you felt completely quiet and still. What insights or revelations did you gain from that experience? How can you incorporate more moments of stillness into your daily life to foster self-transcendence and deeper connection with your inner self?   Find inner peace and transcendence through the practice of silence and stillness in this guided meditation. Inspired by the profound words of Baba Ram Dass, "The quieter you become, the more you can hear," learn to quiet the mind and listen to your inner wisdom. Cultivate a sense of calm, clarity, and deep connection. Allow this meditation to guide you towards self-transcendence by embracing the power of silence and stillness within.

Thousands would fill arenas and churches to hear him sing, preach and inspire. But things dramatically changed when he stood in his mega church pulpit to proclaim a new doctrine, one that declared that because of Christ, no soul will spend eternity in hell. This controversial doctrine polarized faith communities all over the world. Bishop Pearson wasn't prepared for the rejection and stones aimed at him. He lost everything: his influence, his church, his friends and finances. In a short period of time, one of the church's most beloved went from hero to zero seemingly overnight and became the most prominently titled heretic of his generation.   After spending the last two decades rebuilding and rebooting his life and ministry, Carlton Pearson has emerged with a new purpose aimed to help others examine and reconsider what they believe, why they believe it, and how those beliefs add to or subtract from the quality of their lives. He also discusses our relationship with the divine, and gives us a behind the scenes look at the nature of reality itself... This amazing lecture was recorded in Gainesville, FL, 11/27/75.. Drop In!www.beherenownetwork.comRam Dass Bio:Ram Dass also known as Baba Ram Dass, was an American spiritual teacher, guru of modern yoga, psychologist, and author. His best-selling 1971 book, Be Here Now, which has been described by multiple reviewers as "seminal", has sold two million copies and helped popularize Eastern spirituality and yoga with the baby boomer generation in the West. He authored or co-authored twelve more books on spirituality over the next four decades, including Grist for the Mill (1977), How Can I Help? (1985), and Polishing the Mirror (2013).Dass was personally and professionally associated with Timothy Leary at Harvard University in the early 1960s.In 1967, Alpert traveled to India and became a disciple of Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba who gave him the name Ram Dass, meaning "Servant of Ram". In the coming years, he founded the charitable organizations Seva Foundation and Hanuman Foundation. He traveled extensively giving talks and retreats and holding fundraisers for charitable causes in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. In 1997, he had a stroke which left him with paralysis and expressive aphasia. He eventually grew to interpret this event as an act of grace, learning to speak again and continuing to teach and author books. After becoming seriously ill during a trip to India in 2004, he gave up traveling and moved to Maui, Hawaii, where he hosted annual retreats with other spiritual teachers until his death. In this episode, Brynn Anderson and I listen to a lecture from the the legendary speaker, author, and so much more... Ram Dass. Recorded in 1987, Ram Dass talks about what true success is and shares his perspective on spiritual goal setting. He also breaks down how to achieve a form of conscious capitalism when doing business.. Drop In!Ram Dass:Ram Dass also known as Baba Ram Dass, was an American spiritual teacher, guru of modern yoga, psychologist, and author. (1985), and Polishing the Mirror (2013).Dass was personally and professionally associated with Timothy Leary at Harvard University in the early 1960s. In 1967, Alpert traveled to India and became a disciple of Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba who gave him the name Ram Dass, meaning "Servant of Ram". Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have the consummate balance of an entrepreneurially sharp yet resolutely calm mind? Well … mystery solved! Our intrepid host, Mirena Umizaj, invites mindfulness paladin, Attorney Joe DiNardo, an incredible source of inspiration and pillar of strength to many in the field of law. Revisiting his humble beginnings, Joe reminisces about the 1100 square feet home of his childhood. Not expecting to attend college, he almost serendipitously finds himself at Brockport State College and surprises himself as he turns into a mainstay in the dean's list. Enjoying his undergrad success, he transfers to the University of Buffalo, subsequently attending law school. With so much altruism in his cadence, he starts his career in a “lower economic and African-American part of the city,” teaching part-time at a GED and adult education center—all the while offering his services to an impoverished community who have no means of affording an attorney. Because of all the false arrests and destitute offenses he had to represent, his reputation as a defense attorney flourished. From one mountain to the next Everest, his 26-year career burgeons from personal injury work into the litigation funding company he founded in 2000, Counsel Financial. Meanwhile, sharing the same interests, Mirena and Joe deep-dives into the zen of mindfulness and spirituality.  He impresses us with his stalwart, 4 am meditation habit, and five decades of transcendentally centering oneself to bravely face the many pitfalls life throw his way. As a mindfulness expert, Joe expounds on the foundation, nuances, methods, and health benefits of “sitting” and intentionally drawing strength from a quiet mind. It's no wonder Joe knows how to find peace even from the tragedy of his wife's passing.  We hit a hard note as he shares Marcia DiNardo's bittersweet journey and her brave battle with cancer. Her undue demise in 2015 rocks his world in so many ways. As Joe engulfs us with their beautiful story—the tremendous love and family they shared and the best things he derived from knowing her—we see a successfully prolific yet humble man, seeing our dreary, cimmerian world through cloudless eyes of unabashed hope. EPISODE SURVEY  [00:13:41] From humble beginnings to major asbestos case building[00:19:37] On pioneering a new model of lending loans to law firms, known today as Counsel Financial[00:44:54] An acid trip, ultrasonic hearing, and expanding consciousness[00:55:55] Joe speaks of his meditation retreat with Baba Ram Dass during his journey to pursue Buddhism and Mindfulness. [01:27:28] “And that's what the Buddha said in the very first discourse he ever gave...the illness for all of mankind is craving. It's just wanting ... either to hang on to things or wanting to push away the uncomfortable things, it's all just one little thing- craving” [02:02:18] “As a caretaker, it's not our job to do what we think a sick person needs, it's our job to listen to what they think they need, and to comfort them as best we can.” ABOUT OUR GUEST: Joe DiNardo Founder of Counsel Financial, a commercial lender offering loans and credit lines to law firms. Recently we all lost a great spiritual teacher who touched the loves of many walking the spiritual path - Baba Ram Dass.  Ram Dass was an American psychologist and spiritual teacher who studied and practiced meditation for many years. He shared his understanding and suggested how you can find methods suitable for you on the journey of awakening. He illuminated the stages and benefits of meditative practice, and provided wise and often humorous advice on overcoming difficulties along the way.  To honor his death I wanted to do a deep dive on my favorite chapter from his book The Journey of Awakening.  The chapter "Losing Your Way" was eye opening in explaining that many things that can derail us on the path to awakening.  When we gain powers, see visions, meet angels, experience states of bliss, sometimes these things are just distractions for something even greater and we end up losing our way.  Regenerative Spiritual Reset ✧ 111Hz, 222Hz, 444Hz, 888Hz ✧ Deep Healing Meditation  111Hz ✧ The Divine Frequency ✧ Cellular Regeneration ✧ Deep Meditation  ➤ Listen on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2KjGlLI➤ Follow them on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2JW8BU2➤ Join them on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2G1j7G6➤ Subscribe to their channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyvjffON2NoUvX5q_TgvVkw For coaching – https://www.advancedsuccessinstitute.com For all episodes of the Reality Revolution – https://www.therealityrevolution.com Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/RealityRevolutionPodcast/ Join our facebook group The Reality Revolution  https://www.facebook.com/groups/403122083826082/ Subscribe to my Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOgXHr5S3oF0qetPfqxJfSw Contact us at media@advancedsuccessinsitute.com

Today’s show is all about the taboo conversation of what it’s like to deal with losing a loved one. My dad died when I was 17 and I’ve been wanting to talk about that experience ever since. So, when Sharzad started to share on social media that her mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer I knew we had to talk. I am SO geeked out excited to have her on the show! You will hear about my creepy girl crush in the episode lol, but my stalker ass aside she is really such a gem. Truly entertaining, hilarious and delightful yet so real, vulnerable and honest about the fact that the struggle is real. She’s such a breath of fresh air in real life and on the interwebs. *Since this episode was recorded her mom has passed away, and we will likely record another one in a few months to talk about how she feels.  In this episode you will hear:  -Sharzad’s story about her amazing mother who was diagnosed with terminal cancer -How she has learned to cope with that news -My story about how my dad died when I was 17 -A conversation we all desperately need because death is a part of life that we can’t avoid -A colon cancer joke that you will either love or will make you hate us both immediately -Sharzad’s tips for dealing with death Quotes: “She’s dying the way she lived, full of people and love and energy and happiness.” Sharzad Kiadeh “This has truly taught me to focus on the present.” Sharzad Kiadeh “I have had so many more honest conversations with people ever since this diagnosis.” Sharzad Kiadeh “I have made so many things in my life more intentional like the time with my kids or my mom.” Sharzad Kiadeh “If you are going through a really rough time finding something that is fulfilling to your personal life and gets you up every day to go live your life is going to be the thing that makes or breaks you.” Sharzad Kiadeh “Finding my purpose and my sense of fulfillment came from a lot of soul searching.” Sharzad Kiadeh “If I have something that I work towards every day then I’ll be happy, and I can have something to get up and live for.” Sharzad Kiadeh “My mom is so woke about death that I have to be too.” Sharzad Kiadeh Resources: https://www.instagram.com/sharzadkiadeh/ Sharzad’s youtube video with her mom on life and death Many Lives Many Masters by Brian L. Peter Mt. Shasta lived with Neem Karoli Baba in India on and off from 1971–1972, also spending time with American teacher Baba Ram Dass. He also met and studied with other yogis and saints: Anandamayi Ma, Shivabalayogi and Sathya Sai Baba, as well as being a guest of The Theosophical Society in Adyar, India. On returning to the US the Ascended Master Saint Germain materialized before him in Muir Woods in a physical form and sent him to Mount Shasta, California to study with Pearl Dorris, former assistant to Guy Ballard.[1] The account of this meeting with Saint Germain is recorded in Apprentice to the Masters: Adventures of a Western Mystic, Book II. He also claims to have met El Morya and Koot Hoomi in physical form, as well as meeting with Saint Germain in physical form on numerous occasions. Some of his earliest writing is referenced in Mount Shasta: An Annotated Bibliography by William C. Miesse. He was interviewed by Emilie Frank in her book Mount Shasta: California's Mystic Mountain; however, his comments about a "City of Light" were taken out of context. He is further mentioned by Madeline Duntley in her article Spiritual Tourism and Frontier Esotericism at Mount Shasta. He is currently working under the Masters guidance to incorporate the ancient eastern teachings on meditation and self-analysis into the western teachings on mastery through the invocation of the I AM consciousness.

We welcome Gay Dillingham to the April full moon edition of ATTMind Radio. Gay is an award-winning filmmaker and the director of Dying To Know: Timothy Leary and Ram Das. We have her on the show to talk about Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (no known as Baba Ram Dass), who they were on the surface of history but also who they were as people, friends, and members of a larger community. For full show notes, head to http://bit.ly/ATTMindRadioEp45 We also talk about the process of making this film and why she felt telling the story of these two men was so important that she was willing to invest 19 years of her life into making it. (Also, how it was she got Robert Redford to narrate this film about counter-cultural heroes!) Personally, watching this film was perspective altering for me, which I talk about in the episode. Having been exposed to an intimate revealing of people whom I had only known as the legends that had come before me, was deeply meaningful. If you do, or don't know who these men are it's still a worthy listen, as, like Gay proclaims in the film, "whether you know them or not, chances are they changed your life".
