Marx's American Journey with Andrew Hartman

America's hidden Marxist history reveals a country where radical ideas took root in ways we've deliberately forgotten. Dr. Andrew Hartman takes us on a journey through this erased past, uncovering how deeply Marx's ideas penetrated American society from the Civil War through today.Marx himself was surprisingly connected to America, writing hundreds of articles for the New York Tribune—the world's most-read newspaper in the 1850s—and developing key theories about labor and freedom through his analysis of American slavery. These writings would profoundly shape his masterwork, Capital, yet few Americans know this historical connection exists. The real revelation comes when we discover how widely Marx's ideas spread across America's heartland. Oklahoma socialists outnumbered Republicans for a decade. Mining towns in Montana and Colorado witnessed class warfare that rivals any European struggle. Jack London wasn't just writing adventure tales but promoting Marxism through passionate speeches and novels like The Iron Heel. These weren't fringe movements but significant political forces shaping American life. What makes American Marxism distinct is its remarkable hybridization—merging with evangelical Christianity in the South, populism in the Midwest, and civil rights activism in Black communities. Far from a rigid foreign ideology, Marxist thought provided analytical tools that diverse Americans adapted to understand their specific struggles against exploitation.Through economic crashes, war, and cultural upheaval, Marxist ideas have resurged repeatedly in American life—most recently since the 2008 financial crisis. By recovering this deliberately obscured history, we gain insight not just into our past but into the persistent appeal of radical critiques when capitalism fails to deliver on its promises of freedom and prosperity for all.Send us a text Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeLeadership Lessons From The Great BooksReading great literature is better than trying to read and understand...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showCrew:Host: C. While we're told by politicians that the ideas of Karl Marx are foreign and have no place in this country, history proves otherwise. Andrew Hartman shows that Marx and Marxism have had an a significant influence on the United States, from Marx's journalistic writings for the New York Daily Tribune, to the mass politics the Socialist and Communist Parties and the Wobblies, on the most radical edge of the New Deal, and the New Left, and finally with the return to Marx's ideas since the Global Financial Crisis. Get Andrew's book here: https://press.uchicago.edu/.../chicago/K/bo245100866.html   In Karl Marx in America, historian Andrew Hartman argues that even though Karl Marx never visited America, the country has been infused, shaped, and transformed by him. Since the beginning of the Civil War, Marx has been a specter in the American machine. During the Gilded Age, socialists read Marx as an antidote to the unchecked power of corporations. In the Great Depression, communists turned to Marx in hopes of transcending the destructive capitalist economy. The young activists of the 1960s were inspired by Marx as they gathered to protest an overseas war. Marx's influence today is evident, too, as Americans have become increasingly attuned to issues of inequality, labor, and power.   After decades of being pushed to the far-left corner of intellectual thought, Marx's ideologies have crossed over into the mainstream and are more alive than ever. Working-class consciousness is on the rise, and, as Marx argued, the future of a capitalist society rests in the hands of the people who work at the point of production. A valuable resource for anyone interested in Marx's influence on American political discourse, Karl Marx in America is a thought-provoking account of the past, present, and future of his philosophies in American society.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. There are a myriad of examples of this, one of my favorites happens to be Ben Paterson's version of ‘Here, There and Everywhere', which I encourage you to take a moment to look up.  Grammy winning drummer Paul Francis understands this as well and his 2022 release ‘All My Life', and this week's performance in support of it explores the melodic elasticity of the intersection of The Beatles and Jazz. Here is a little bit about Andrew Hartman: At 27, I lost my sense of smell due to stress at work. I was a knowledge worker, responsible for my own schedule, and I was stressed out of my mind.Waking up in cold sweats was the norm, often from project management nightmares.I couldn't keep my calendar or to-do list straight, and every day felt like a battle, culminating in me unable to smell anything or even taste food. I realized the red warning lights of mental breakdown were flashing all around me, and something had to change. This was rock bottom for me, starting me on a 15 year journey to find a way to restore my mental health while still making progress on strategic priorities. And guess what: it worked. Every week, my Time Boss (Aka me) plans out my week for me, ensuring I run at the highest sustainable pace, making massive progress on my priorities, all the while maintaining peace. And there's hope for you too. The Time Boss Model is a distilled version of 15 years of learning. I've ran the experiments, made the mistakes, learned what works and what doesn't. It's my joy and privilege to now share that with others. I lead every Time Boss Group, and I do all the 1x1 coaching, because I believe in this work deeply, and I get the deepest joy from helping people make peaceful progress in their life. I believe that each of us has a part to play. Each of us has a unique contribution that the world needs. Corey Robin is a big deal on the intellectual left in America, and for the better part of a decade, from about 2012 to 2019, his Facebook page was one of the most vital and interesting spaces on the American intellectual left. Back in 2017, I wrote this about Corey and his most influential book, The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Sarah Palin:The Reactionary Mind has emerged as one of the more influential political works of the last decade. Robin himself has become, since the book's publication, one of the more aura-laden figures on the intellectual left. Paul Krugman cites him and the book periodically in his New York Times columns and on his blog. Robin's Facebook page, which he uses as a blog and discussion forum, has become one of the places to watch to understand where thinking on the left is. Another key node of the intellectual left is Crooked Timber, a group blog of left-wing academics to which Robin is a long-time contributor, and another is Jacobin, a socialist magazine that often re-publishes Robin's blog posts sans edits, like dispatches from the oracle.I've long been fascinated by Corey's Facebook page, in particular, because it was such a novel space. It couldn't exist prior to the internet, and if there were any other important writers who used the platform in that way, as a real venue for thoughtful and vigorous political discussion, I'm not familiar with them. It didn't replace or render obsolete the magazines, like The Nation and Dissent, that were the traditional places where the left talked to itself. It was just a different thing, an improvisational, unpredictable, rolling forum where you went to see what people of a certain bent were talking about, who the key players were, what the key debates were. And Corey himself, in this context, had a charismatic presence. To even get him to respond seriously to a comment you made on one of his posts was to get a little thrill. To be praised by Corey, in the main text of a post, was to feel like you were a made man. Over the past few weeks I've spent some time dipping into the archives of his page, and while there I compiled a list of notable names who showed up as commenters. My list included: Lauren Berlant, Matt Karp, Tim Lacy, Miriam Markowitz, Annette Gordon Reed,  Doug Henwood, Jeet Heer, Freddie Deboer, Raina Lipsitz, Elayne Tobin, Scott Lemieux, Paul Buhle, Jedediah Purdy, Jodi Dean, Alex Gourevitch, Tamsin Shaw, Rick Perlstein, Greg Grandin, Katha Pollitt, Joel Whitney, Liza Featherstone, Andrew Hartman, Rebecca Vilkomerson, Samuel Moyn, Tim Lacy, Yasmin Nair, Bhaskar Sunsara, Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor, Gideon Lewis Kraus. This is just the people I recognized (or googled ) in my brief time skimming. The full list of eminent leftist Americans who populated Corey's page over the years would surely run to hundreds of names, which is to say that a significant portion, maybe even a majority, of the writers and intellectuals who comprised the intellectual left in those years was reading and participating in his page. How this came about, and what it meant, is one of the topics we cover in the podcast, which ended up being a kind of stock-taking of sorts of the very recent history of the American left. We also talk about Corey's involvement as an organizer with GESO, Yale's graduate student union, when he was getting his PhD in political science; his retrospective thoughts on why he over-estimated the strength of the American left in the mid-2010s; what he got right about Trump and Trumpism; and why Clarence Thomas may be corrupt, but is at least intellectually honest about it. Corey is a professor at Brooklyn College and the author of three books: Fear: The History of a Political Idea, The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Sarah Palin (revised and re-issued as Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Donald Trump), and most recently The Enigma of Clarence Thomas. He has written for The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, the London Review of Books, and Jacobin, among many other places.  Eminent Americans is a reader-supported publication. The debate in the United States on a woman's right to abortion has raged on for decades. For conservatives, it is about religious values and the country's future as a Christian nation. For progressives and many moderates, it is about individual rights. If the US Supreme Court rolls back Roe v Wade in the coming months, it will be a milestone in the Culture Wars. Host Steve Clemons asks journalist Julia Manchester and historians Jonathan Zimmerman and Andrew Hartman whether there is still room for compromise among the two camps on abortion and other values- and lifestyle-based issues like gay marriage, immigration and racism. #TheBottomLine

In a new article, Anton Jäger argues we've now moved into a hyperpolitical age. Is everything being politicised...except the really important stuff?   We discuss some examples of hyperpolitics in Europe and North America and ask if what's going on is just a hot culture war, or something bigger. In episode six, we speak to Andrew Hartman who is currently a doctoral student in Psychology at the University of Saskatchewan, and a Certified Health & Wellness Coach. Also the founder of Saskatoon-based business, Psystem, Andrew and their team run a virtual wellness space to provide support, resources, and services for those on pain journeys - an endeavour that was directly inspired by Andrew's own lived experience of pain!Andrew has had a lifetime of experience with chronic pain, and currently suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). AS is a global inflammatory disease similar to arthritis that causes pain; over time, it can cause bones in the spine (vertebrae) to fuse, and can spread to additional joints causing damage in other parts of the body.During our conversation, Andrew shares some inspirational stories and insight on how perseverance and self-advocacy are crucial parts of accepting and managing a chronic pain condition. They also provide some keen takeaways and advice for those struggling with depression and/or physical limitations alongside their pain, the importance of conscious breath work and yoga practices to enable feelings of safety in one's body, and excellent advice to both care providers and patients. Lastly, we close with some education on the “The Spoon Theory” of chronic illness, which is a self-pacing strategy that emphasizes the need for chronic pain patients to work within a certain quota as a pain management strategy. Developed by Christine Miserandino to relate to many types of chronic illness, it describes perfectly an idea of each person having limited energy – using the analogy of “spoons” as a unit of energy - on how someone can approach their day and learn to live well.   More information about the Andrew and Psystem can be found on Facebook and Instagram (@MyPsystem – links below), or by e-mailing “info@psystem.ca” We will also post a link about the “The Spoon Theory” on our social media channels for more information following the release of this episode. “We started to create a strong bridge between inside and outside of the house; we were realizing that we needed to make both pieces great.”  -Andrew Hartman Teams flourish under teachable leaders. For proof, look no further than Andrew Hartman, president of Hartman Independent Company based in Canonsburg, PA. As the third-generation  decision-maker, his conscious efforts to remain open to new ideas and willingness to engage in challenging conversations have transformed this 70-year-old distributorship. Jason chats with Andrew about tweaking team roles, buying group advantages, and leading by example. “I actually had to apply to the company where I was working part-time for a full-time position,” Andrew recalls, explaining that, in hindsight, the speed bumps his father put in place before he could join the family business served him better than having the keys to the kingdom simply handed over. The experience reinforced the notion that he was applying for a “real job” and, if he wanted to rise in the ranks, he’d have to earn every rung. No spoiler here; Andrew did succeed. “To be a great leader, you have to first be able to be led. That’s not possible if you’re not teachable,” he says, with the self-assured yet humble style that’s at the core of Hartman Independent’s thriving culture. Teachability is behind a recent shift within the company. Intrigued by the prospect of strengthening Hartman’s value proposition, Andrew split his customer service team and inside sales staff into two separate entities. While not without its challenges, especially during a pandemic, the change has allowed the organization to reallocate resources for potentially more significant returns. “I think, again, just being willing to learn and to grow and to change, it’s gonna end in success,” Andrew says. The education doesn’t stop once Andrew leaves his office. In addition to STAFDA membership, he’s also active in several buying groups: AFFlink and Sphere 1. He’s a firm believer in the tools and services provided and the relationships fostered among members. “There’s really a triangle effect that is going on, three strands if you will,” he says, “and it creates a strong bond driven by the organization but, still, with the distributor and the manufacturer at the core.” Here, too, Andrew approaches his membership with humility, knowing he’ll only get out of these associations what he puts in.  CONNECT WITH ANDREW HARTMAN: LinkedIn CONNECT WITH JASON BADER: LinkedIn *** Distribution Talk is produced by The Distribution Team, a consulting services firm dedicated to helping wholesale distribution clients remove barriers to profitability, generate wealth and achieve personal goals.    This episode was edited & mixed by The Creative Impostor Studios.  http://www.distributionteam.com

This week we hear from Andrew Hartman, a professor of history at Illinois State University. Andrew is currently hard at work on a book about Karl Marx. I asked him to come on the podcast because the name Marx seems to be in the air right now. It’s not just that we’ve come up the centenary of the Russian Revolution. People seem to want to talk about, or at least debate once again, the merit of Marx’s ideas and the form of economic and cultural analysis that he inaugurated. Consider the many books that have recently come out, like China Mieville’s "October," re-assessing the October Revolution and wondering if it inevitably led to Stalinism; consider also the many articles and essays in periodicals not just like Jacobin and the Nation, but also The New York Times, reintroducing Marxist concepts into the national debate as a way to assess and critique what is called neo-liberalism.

Andrew Hartman is associate professor of history at Illinois State University. His book A War for the Soul of America: A History of the Culture Wars (University of Chicago Press, 2015) provides a whirlwind tour through the most salient debates of what became known as the culture wars of the late twentieth century. As a set of debates and political tussles the culture wars reflected America’s struggle to deal with the vast changes left by 1960s and more complex than a simple left/right, secular/religious binary that characterized public discussion. Beginning with the normative Americanism fragmenting under the influence of the New Left, Hartman shows us how the watershed decade set the terms for the cultural wars. Public intellectuals such as Paul Goodman and C. Wright Mills to rock stars such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix and the comedy duo the Smothers Brothers marked the changes. Seemingly everything about American life from sexual mores to national history was up for renegotiation. Hartman places the genesis of the debate for the American future in the struggle between the New Left and their chief ideological opponents, and former liberals, neoconservatives. Soon this initial intellectual battle fueled a popular war for the social, religious, and economic future drawing in the newly formed Christian Right, self-identified ethnic groups, feminist and others. The struggles over school curriculum, the rewriting of history, cultural power, the family, religion, and the nature of truth, was the process of coming to terms with a new reality – a situation of a permanent culture revolution and the loss of a normative shared culture. With the heat of the battle significantly cooled, we are left with what Hartman calls an “antiauthoritarian individualism” under intransigent capitalism weakening the hope for social democracy.
