What even is this show!? More Excel Saga! Join us this week as we ponder the existence of Castlevania pornography, reminisce about Angelic Layer, and agree that the enemy must be referred to as the Alien Queen! [Episode 7] Melody of the Underground Passage: In a parody of monster horror movies, the Puchuu shock troops have penetrated F City's sewers, and Kabapu's new Department of City Security is closing in on ACROSS' HQ! Excel and Hyatt try to deal with the two-front situation at arm's length, but hands-on action is required – including an Alien Queen who breeds more Puchuus as reinforcements. [Episode 8] Increase Ratings Week: In a bout of pure fanservice, the girls chill out at the pool. Everyone is in their best poolside attire – except Excel, who gets stuck with a decidedly un-stylish high school swimsuit. Things get even worse for Excel when she gorges herself into a bloated, immobile state on free food provided by their new friend, Cosette – who is not quite as innocent as she appears. No men are fully shown in this episode, except Rikdo, briefly and to approve the experiment, Nabeshin to hold up ending signs to the Beauty Theaters (and getting hurt), and Pedro, with the rest – including Ilpalazzo – at the end. Join Sarah as she hears from Joe all the wild differences between the Angelic Layer anime and manga. They'll then rank all the angels from the series. Who will be crowned the top angel? Listen to find out!
We've done it! One whole show under our belt! It's been a, uh, some time since we recorded and we've done some stuff… like play video games. We go on to spoil some of Persona 3 and 5 and FF7 because we can't help ourselves. In the final two episodes, Shuko must reckon with her plan of announcing herself at the tournament backfiring spectacularly. Misaki sure is going through it. Will they work out their feelings? Will they cry in the rain? They definitely cry in the rain. Then we get a cool ass fight because this is a Shonen remember??Recommendations:Sarah - Sweat and SoapJoe - Infinity Train
Since we are wrapping on our first series Angelic Layer we decided to release our original pilot episode. In it Sarah showed Joe some hand picked openings to select our first series from. Fun times, baby podcasters not quite sure what we were doing at the time. The opening songs have been removed so there may be some silent moments where we were simply watching and not talking. Sarah was too lazy to edit those out but hey, it's a bonus episode!
The penultimate episode! Just a few fights left before close! In IRL time, Sarah has been playing Horizon Forbidden West. Meanwhile, Joe has reached the original ending of Macross which asks the age-old question “Is the power of song and love stronger than 5 million warships?”In Angelic Layer, Misaki must overcome Wizard's Magic Guard! But how will she do it? Is there a gimmick? Is Wizard casting real magic? Doesn't look like a real wizard to me… Then in the next episode, we get the promised fight between Sai and Shu. Will Shu continue her winning streak? Or will Sai have something in store for her? Something? Anything? Sai? Hello?Recommendations:Sarah - Tokyo Mew MewJoe - Immortality
We are approaching the end of Angelic Layer, with a fun, lighthearted trip to the beach! No teen drama here! It's all good times! In the real world, Sarah talks about the live-action Fallout show. Maybe live-action adaptations can be good!? Meanwhile, Joe has gone to the theater to watch the Spy Family Code White movie. In Angelic Layer, Ogata finally gets his summer vacation. Unfortunately, everyone else is going through it. Misaki is getting Ohjiro's attention, Kotaro is trying to get Misaki's attention, Tamayo is trying to get Kotaro's attention, and Hatoko is trying to get a sweet tan. Then in the next episode, Misaki gets some more alone time with Ohjiro and we learn about his, uh, unfortunate first love. I'm sure things will work out for everyone in the end!Recommendation:Sarah - Battle Chef BrigadeJoe - The Beginner's Guide
This week's angelic layer is brought to you by romantic angst. Have you ever wanted to ask someone out but refused to and just felt bad instead? Hope so, because these episodes are full of that.In the real world, Sarah tries to wake up from her exhausting work week, while Joe has finished, not one, but two seasons of anime (High Card and Faraway Paladin). In Angelic Layer, Misaki reconsiders her thoughts about Height when a new challenger reveals the ugly truth about being a tall girl; Boys won't think you're cute! The horror. In episode 20, a new challenger takes on Misaki with a very familiar Second. Will she be able to beat this powerful new opponent? Tune in to find out!Recommendations:Joe: Perfect BlueSarah: Paper Girls
This week we go to nationals, but first, we have to party! In the real-world segment, Sarah recounts her forest fair adventure and Joe talks about an anime zombie movie he watched (They really should just let me be a necromancer – Joe).In Angelic Layer, it's time for Misaki to go to Nationals, but first, she has to make a big decision, who will be her second?! At the same time, Shuko also needs to make a decision, to see her damn child! Will she do it?? (no, she won't). At Nationals, Pro Wrestling has arrived as Sai declares she's a challenger and Shuko brings the pain. But who will take the championship belt?Recommendations: Sarah: Walkabout Mini GolfJoe: Crusher Joe - The Movie
We enter the back half of Angelic Layer this week. Joe catches us up on his multiple birthday outings and Sarah talks about not-so-scandalous Apothecary Diaries! In Angelic Layer, girls' love has arrived! Sai takes up a lot of screen time in her match against Hatoko and later in her match against Misaki. Will the Ice Machine keep her cool or will she melt under the pressure? Also, we learn about Shuko's new bestie Sekiko and they play catch together. Good for them!Recommendations: Sarah - RMBJoe - We Love Katamari (Reroll+)

As sorry for skipping last week we are releasing this main episode as well as a bonus one so be sure to give that a listen too!Joe is off to Las Vegas (Woot Woot) and while Sarah is recovering from a daunting few weeks of work/life.These episodes have Sarah and Joe shouting from the rooftops about how amazing this series is. They're still iffy on Shuko being a bad mom and her sister Shoko has another...intriguing moment.Recommendations:Joe - OMORISarah - Chihayafuru
Your favorite Shoujo podcast continues its coverage of the technically Shounen, but decidedly feminine series Angelic Layer. Sarah explains the newest manhua she's reading while Joe shares his thoughts on the original Macross anime. In Angelic Layer, we see Misaki face off with the cheater sisters and later she goes on a date with Kotaro-chan! Will this be the first Shounen series to acknowledge its romantic implications?!Recommendations:Joe - Star Wars RebelsSarah - Mass Effect Legendary Edition
This week we run through some (mostly bad) news that happened this week. Then we pay our dues to International Women's Week by sharing our favorite female anime characters. Sarah has been busy with work while Joe finished two whole shows! In Angelic Layer, Misaki must face off with first, an Idol and then a cheat! How will she fare? Will she be able to keep her promise to Hatoko? You'll just have to listen to find out!Recommendations: Joe - Frieren: Beyond Journey's EndSarah - Persona 3 Portable
Another great episode of Shoujoe is upon us. Sarah considers the past as she discusses the new historical drama Shogun and the complex time-travel revenge story Marry My Husband. Then Joe and Sarah go on a full tear through Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a somehow more simplified version of a children's cartoon. In Angelic Layer episodes 7 and 8, Misaki is on a mission to teach some fools the true meaning of Angelic Layer, having fun with your cool Angel! We also learn that girls name their dolls and thus have a better psychic command over them giving them +3 to agility, truly enlightening stuff. For recommendations, we have:Sarah - History of the 90sJoe - Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
We're back to recap two more great episodes of Angelic Layer! Joe talks about different series of space wars and Sarah reminisces on Code Lyoko and her first impressions of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender - no spoilers. In Angelic Layer, Misaki is making short work of the tournament. But does she really believe in Hikaru? Or is she just playing it safe? Meanwhile, Hatoko continues to be the coolest kindergartener on the planet. But it all comes to a head when Misaki and Hatoko face off in their match, who will come out as victor!?For recommendations both Sarah and Joe recommended webcomics:Sarah recommends A Spell for a Smith & Unholy BloodJoe recommends Harpy Gee
We're back this week to discuss Angelic Layer episodes 3 & 4. Sarah reveals that she's in an anime slump, oh no! Meanwhile, Joe is raking in the cash from an apparent class action settlement against HiDive. And you thought being an anime watcher wasn't profitable. In Angelic Layer, having just won her first match, Misaki's next challenge is to learn some cool dance moves. And a new mysterious and talented boy enters the picture, Ooo la la. We then move immediately into a tournament arc and find out that Hatoko is the coolest kindergartener ever, who'da thought? We double down on how this show really is Shoujo and we imagine a world where Esports are actually good.We cap off with some recommendations:Joe recommends a podcast called Game Studies Study BuddiesSarah recommends a video game called WitchSpring R
Welcome to the first episode of ShouJoe, a podcast where our host Sarah shows her longtime friend Joe some Shoujo anime (anime with an audience intended for girls/young women). Every episode we recap and discuss two episodes of a shoujo anime. We are starting with Angelic Layer and this episode will cover episodes 1 & 2. …okay look, so maybe, just maybe, Angelic Layer is technically a Shounen anime (the intended audience is boys), and perhaps Sarah just assumed it was a Shoujo because she watched it as a child, but it's got a female lead, and mother-daughter drama, and, uh, dolls, so I think we should count it. We're going to count it. It's Shoujo now!
It's finally here! It's the finale of our season 10, and Angelic Layer. Will Misaki and her Mother face of in a fight to end all fights? Will her mother admit she has a daughter!? Chitose reveals that she wrote A City With No People to help Chi with her search for her soulmate. Hideki runs off to find Chi, while Chi decides that Hideki is her soulmate and activates her unique programming. Topics: Should Yuzuki have died? Is Freya's love creepy? Covers all five volumes of Angelic Layer by CLAMP.What if battle shonen, but for GIRLS? That's the premise of Angelic Layer, where young girls get to fight with super-cool dolls that they control with their minds (OK, Ohjiro can play too). Upon coming to Tokyo, Misaki immediately becomes smitten with this game and learns the ropes very quickly. Shojo & Tell host Ashley, her boytoy Asher, and guest Aisha discuss the gender dynamics of the manga (moms can play with VR tech too!!), the fanfiction-y nature of CLAMP’s works, and who the best deus and angel are (Sai! Wizard??).REFERENCESAngelic Layer is currently out of print, but you can find copies of the Dark Horse edition floating aroundOther CLAMP works:Tsubasa: Reservoir ChroniclexxxHolicShirahime-SyoChobitsMagic Knight RayearthTokyo BabylonWishCardcaptor SakuraXIf you want to hear more podcasts about CLAMP works, you should listen to CLAMPcast in WonderlandAisha's series about smutty manga: Thirsty ThursdayOutro song: "The Streatham Hill Gods" by DanosongsCONTACT USAsher on Archive of Our Own: dasheryFollow Aisha on Instagram and Twitter @MommaLuvsMangaWatch Aisha's manga reviews on her YouTube channelShojo & Tell on Twitter, Tumblr, and InstagramAshley on Twitter: @AshMcD00The next episode will cover Fruits Basket Another with Jacob Chapman.

Covers all of Magic Knight Rayearth by CLAMP (that's six volumes across MKR I and II) Take a trip to Cefiro, grab a sword, and get in a mech in this wild and beautiful Clamp classic. Asher and Ashley do a character walkthrough that’s mostly gushing about how pretty everyone is (Eagle! Lantis! Umi! Fuu! Hikaru! That's only 1/100th of the number of characters in this six-volume manga!), debate whether Princess/Pillar Emeraude committed suicide and how this relates to controversies over assisted suicide, and of course, fail to escape hitsuzen because everything is hitsuzen. Plus, the Ashes solve global problems that plague many nations, laugh at how many characters/places are named after cars (AUTOZAM! CLEF!), and fawn over how cute all the (problematic) ships are. LINKS Magic Knight Rayearth is available from Dark Horse Comics Other CLAMP works mentioned: Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, xxxHolic, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc (all available from Kodansha USA), plus Cardcaptor Sakura, Angelic Layer, Chobits (all available from Dark Horse Comics) Adolescence of Utena (available in iTunes) Assisted suicide in America Fahren means “to drive” in German Lots of characters are named after cars. A prime example is the “Autozam Clef.” Everything is hitsuzen Joe from Cyborg 009 Outro song: “Yuzurenai Negai” by Naomi Tamura (one of the Magic Knight Rayearth openings). We don't get hype or stay hype. As the race to catch up before the fiscal year ends continues, we've got quite a bit to cover in this episode. Stephen's New Business is light with just a little bit of co-op Starcraft 2, as his birth in the world championships slips away. Donald has the biggest game of the episode in the form of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, including the sudden realization that this is probably going to be his answer to Final Fantasy X for Austen a couple of years ago (though there are a few brief mentions thrown in). Austen is still telling his Digimon Story, but the Cyber Sleuth is upstaged by a rather stacked Prince of Darkness. (Surpisingly, he's not weak to wind, but he is stacked.) Austen has also been wrangling Paper Toads in Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, but has an understated aquatic racer Riptide GP2 as a tribute to the then-unemployed Kyke Bosman. Whatcha Watchin' has the usual round of superhero tomfoolery, followed by Stephen coming up with the unpronouncable and as-of-yet undubbed Concrete Revoluio (knock it off, spellcheck). Donald got around to watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala, which seems to have forgotten something small - like a functioning atomic bomb. In other unexpected bursts of energy, Austen punched through the Angelic Layer and found some pretty illogical things waiting on the other side. It's another Big Block o' Cheese Day in the Feature, as Microsoft's console plans, Sony firmwares and a discussion of potential Japan/US relations serve as the warmup for a rapid-fire breakdown of this month's Nintendo Direct that Donald's still not sure he saw everything in. The Mushrooms are so extreme Austen's main recorder broke as we debut the Weird Mushroom and Donald's giving a Poison to a mainline Pokémon game. Episode 75 will be a hair shorter, but we want to know what's after that, so drop us an email or tweet @nfrpodcast to let us know anything we should cover. This podcast was recorded on March 5 and was edited by Donald Theriault. The editor would also like to congratulate friend/former financier of the show Ryan M on his impending nuptuals.
Offer not guaranteed if your hard drive is screwedJudging from the title, you can probably guess one of the main topics of conversation in this episode, but we've got some important warmup acts. Austen opens New Business with the fourth most important game to release on November 10 - noted bomba and reason for executive canning Rise of the Tomb Raider. He didn't pay full price, but Austen's none too thrilled with his purchase. In terms of things he did enjoyed, there's the follow up to March's masochism simulator Bloodborne with the Old Hunters expansion. Stephen got a little FF Type-0 HD in - for $20, so Donald can put it on the board - and then got ready for adventure with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Finally, Donald drops sixty five hours of perspective on Xenoblade Chronicles X, though that conversation will probably come back around next episode.Whatcha Watchin has a brief bit of Angelic Layer from Austen, then a mutual discussion of Doctor Who, the superhero show segment headed up by the dreaded Netflix queue's Jessica Jones, before Stephen finds the Seven Deadly Sins are missing at least two of those features. Donald has a brief mention here in between Xeno-sessions.The Feature was fortuitously provided by a week's delay in recording, as we cover The Game Awards and PlayStation Experience. Also, we didn't bother providing the Pokémon in this episode as, well, things got a little salty after a PR statement was read into the record. The Mushrooms cover a case of Konami not being preceded by an F-word, the joys of home construction and more Valkyria Chronicles. Now, if the PS3 version would just come out digitally...Next episode is the end of the year spectacular, and we want to hear from you! Send your top 5 games (all platforms eligible) or any awards you'd like us to hand out to the usual spots, or just drop them below. Also, if you missed our performance on the NWR Live Telethon for Child's Play, check it out - unfortunately, you've given Donald a get out of jail free card on Skyward Sword should he choose to use it. Until next time, Genei Ibunroku did it right. This podcast was recorded on December 6 and was edited by Donald Theriault.
We soldier on through technical problems to bring you one heck of a show today! Burr gives his final thoughts on Angelic Layer, with Xenocore calling in to chime in on the ending. Then together with Kitsune we all touch a bit on one of the biggest anime series of 2012, Sword Art Online. The hosts also give their impressions of Guild Wars 2 and the High School of the Dead manga among other things. To Love Ru is our new Anime Night pick. How do you tell people you're drunk when out for the night in Tokyo or Buenos Aires? Find out! Cat vs. Fox is slashing tires and angry about fake stockings. Gawdy calls in while we talk about a live action Kiki's Delivery Service and itanails in our news segment.
Burr time travels with some Sly Cooper and Looper. Kitsune keeps grinding through Ni No Kuni and gushes over Daniel Craig's latest Bond flick, Skyfall. Xenocore joins us to talk some more Angelic Layer. We put up fan favorite Trigun against Kimi ni Todoke for Valentine's Day, and Xenocore casts the deciding vote on air! Speaking of that special day, we'll teach you how to tell someone you love them in Spanish and Japanese, and how they celebrate it in Argentina and Japan. Cat vs. Fox features the latest innovation in motion control, if you know what we mean. We struggle to pronounce Ys in our news segment.
Burr gets a little frustrated by Angelic Layer and a visual novel, something he's never tried before. Kitsune tells us about Genkaka Picasso and Black Butler, two manga she picked up last week, as well as the hit "Zom-Com" in the theaters: Warm Bodies. Trigun was a hit with everyone, but is it enough to beat Eyeshield 21 in the anime vote? We'll teach you how to tell people to wait in Spanish and Japanese. Cat vs. Fox has some dating advice as well as a location for your date! Find out why you can't worship Hello Kitty any more and what Domino's latest wacky sale is in our news segment.

For this minisode I start things off with the anime movie Tokyo Godfathers, it stars 3 homeless people as they discover a discarded baby and want to return it to their respective parents and along the way we find tidbits about our main characters as well. After that I review Angelic Layer, I only got to watch the first 4 episodes but that was more than enough to give a score as well as an idea what to expect throughout the series. Lastly I give a preview of Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, having only watched two episodes I feel comfortable saying that the animation will grab your attention from the get go. (And I didn't mention this in the show but the opening song for Gankutsuou is in my opinion really bad.) Enjoy the show! Opening and Closing Song- Be My Angel by Atsuko Enomoto
En este podcast les hablamos de Little King's Story, nuevo juego para Wii, la trilogía de Metroid y Trauma Center Under the Knife. Además hablamos de los animes Canaan, Angelic Layer y Tsukihime....
