Kurz: bunte Folge, viele Meinungen, einige Überraschungen. Genau so mögen wir's.
Lynzee, Jacki, and James debate Yoshiki's choices in the latest episode of The Summer Hikaru Died before rocking out with HAYASII from DAN DA DAN! This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Forest. I've known Forest since he was rated 1000 and just recently he crossed 2200 achieving NM! I brought him back on the show to talk about how he did it. He talked about breaking out of plateaus and the study changes and mental changes it took to get there. We talked about his busy life, the important role of parents, and the fun experiences that he's had outside of OTB chess. Forest has played many chess celebrities such as the Botez sisters, Anna Cramling, and he even defeated Hikaru! As the chess world digests the devastating news of the passing of Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, I found myself thinking back to our first interview in August of 2020 (Episode 191). At the time, as chess boomed during the pandemic, Danya was ascending from promising young American player to chess commentating superstar. In the interview Danya's eloquence, empathy, and hilarious impersonations were on full display. It is among the most listened-to Perpetual Chess episodes in the podcast's 9 year history. As you may have heard, GM Hikaru Nakamura made a surprise appearance at the Louisiana State Championship, as part of fulfilling FIDE's World Championship qualification criteria. In return, the players he encountered gained memories and stories they'll never forget. In this multi-guest special episode, I speak with several of Hikaru's opponents, as well as the tournament's organizer, to hear their firsthand accounts: Senior Tournament Director Richard Campbell (13:00) – on why he and his team initially thought Hikaru's registration was a prank, and how they realized it was real. 20-year-old college student Harry James (32:00) – on how being paired with Hikaru in Round 1 unexpectedly cured his hangover. Tulane graduate student Nahum Villamil Garces (47:30) – on the lifetime memories he made after facing Hikaru in Round 3. Five-time Louisiana State Champion FM Nick Matta (1:06:00) – on how he forced himself to play Hikaru with no fear, and how the opportunity to play him re-energized his passion for chess. Baton Rouge-based NM Charles Campbell (1:34:00) – on the mixed feelings he had before his last-round showdown with Hikaru, as he vied for the state champion title. It was so much fun hearing the stories of our guests, and I was touched by the galvanizing effect Hikaru's visit had on the Louisiana chess community Thanks to our sponsor, Chessable.com! Welcome, welcome! As the title suggest, we have a lot of laughter for you this episode. I will apologize for trauma dumping on all of you, my life story goes on for way too long. You can just listen for the music at the 26 minute mark (roughly, don't quote me nothing I say is exact) if you want to skip it which I recommend. As for Anime as the title of the podcast implies, we have My Dress Up Darling, That Summer that guy died... what's his name? Hikaru? The Lord of Mysteries makes a return and the Water Magician has a mini update.
In the series The Summer Hikaru Died, after Hikaru disappears, he is replaced by a mysterious otherworldly entity that perfectly mimics him but is not human, leading his childhood best friend, Yoshiki, to a fraught decision to keep the entity's secret. This entity, known as "the "Hikaru"" or "the monster," maintains Hikaru's memories and appearance but also possesses otherworldly abilities, such as being able to consume other spirits and heal injuries. As strange events and spirits plague their village, Yoshiki must navigate his complex relationship with the new Hikaru, a being that is both a replacement for his lost friend and a frightening supernatural threat.Support The Podcast!https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/roose366/subscribeFollow For More Content &Streams!Science Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5nFXe9dPeWrMpyObyAlrnF?si=7358d1cf32cb45b7Youtube Gaming: https://www.youtube.com/@RooseJp/videosTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@podcastonanime

Short on time but still in need your seasonal anime fix? In Bloom is your 60-second weekly recap—comfy, quick, and packed with the latest episodes, surprises, and seasonal standouts! This week:
Summer 2025 is filled with dark new anime, and few are darker than Netflix's The Summer Hikaru Died. After an inhuman monster takes the place of the deceased Hikaru Indo, Hikaru's best friend, Yoshiki, tries to keep it all a secret out of a need to keep Hikaru in his life, but unfortunately, it isn't long before the situation takes a major toll on Yoshiki's psyche. The Summer Hikaru Died was one of the most anticipated anime of summer 2025, and it's already living up to the hype in more ways than one. Fans and critics alike have already sung its praises for its great writing and production values, and that's already paying off well for it, as The Summer Hikaru Died is already breaking major records on Netflix. It's easy to see how that happened, given the show's great quality, and hopefully, this won't be the end of its success.Support The Podcast!https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/roose366/subscribeFollow For More Content &Streams!Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/roosejpKick: https://kick.com/roosejpYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@Roose366 Youtube Gaming: https://www.youtube.com/@RooseJp/videosTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@podcastonanime

A Note from James:So the question is, I really feel that in order to get not good at something, but great at something, you have to be obsessed. You can't just wake up and decide to be obsessed—it has to be deep, almost irrational. Obsession is like addiction. It throws your life off balance, and yet... there's this insane joy when you enter the subculture of your obsession and get better at it.I've seen this recently in crypto. I saw it in chess in Norway, commenting on what might've been the best chess tournament ever. And I felt it again when I sat down with Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam from New In Chess. We didn't just talk about chess. We talked about obsession, aging, failing at something you love, and trying to find your place in a subculture that's moved on without you.If you care about learning, obsession, or just love chess, you're going to get something out of this episode. Dirk and I recorded this in Stavanger, Norway. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did being a part of it.Episode Description:What does it mean to return to your first love after nearly 30 years away? In this special crossover episode, James Altucher sits down with Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, editor of New In Chess magazine, to reflect on his lifelong (and recently rekindled) obsession with chess. They explore how obsession shapes mastery, why wisdom sometimes trumps raw skill, and what it's like to try and reclaim an old identity as an older version of yourself.James opens up about losing games to kids half his age, obsessively chasing improvement, and why it still might be okay to fail—as long as the journey is honest. From teenage blitz tournaments to dinner with Garry Kasparov, from neuroscience to narrative writing, this episode is as much about how to live as it is about how to play. What You'll Learn:Why obsession is both a superpower and a dangerHow James approaches relearning chess after a 27-year breakWhat changes in the brain as we age—and how to work with itThe surprising ways chess opens doors in life, business, and writingWhy storytelling and vulnerability matter more than "success" aloneTimestamped Chapters:[00:00] The Power of Obsession[01:00] Travel Tales: Norway and Crypto[03:00] Chess Commentary and Podcasting with Dirk Jan[05:00] Dirk Jan's Intro on James Altucher[08:00] James' Curiosity and Love of Learning[10:00] Starting Chess at 17 and Becoming Addicted[13:00] Losing to Irena Krush and Facing Limits[17:00] Chess, Ego, and Real-World Consequences[22:00] How Chess Skills Apply to Business Problems[26:00] Writing as a Path Through Vulnerability[33:00] Returning to Chess: Memory, Aging, and Rediscovery[37:00] Eric Rosen, Coaches, and Mental Decline[41:00] Pattern Recognition vs. Calculation[47:00] What Makes Chess Players Unique[50:00] Interviewing Kasparov, Judit Polgar, Hikaru[56:00] Obsession and the Myth of Talent[58:00] Will the Book Get Written?[60:00] The James Altucher Invitational[62:00] Reflecting on the JourneyAdditional Resources:
IM Alex Ostrovskiy is a former Scholastic National Champion, New York State Champion, and accomplished coach who has earned one GM norm, and reached a peak USCF rating of 2560. In addition to his coaching work, Alex is a regular commentator on GM Hikaru Nakamura's Twitch channel, and a tournament organizer who runs frequent invitational tournaments in New York City (where he has lived since the age of 5.) Alex and I discussed the following: Alex's three main tenets of chess improvement- tactics, opening prep, and playing consistently Lessons from a couple recent tournaments, and why Alex has scaled back his GM-title ambitions The origins of Alex's longtime friendship with Gotham Chess, and whether he is surprised by Levy's success. 31-year-old GM-elect Mark Heimann is an accomplished research scientist by day, and avid powerlifter, who has recently been making headlines in the U.S. chess scene during his work vacation time. In late 2024, Mark went on a stunning run where he earned GM norms in back-to-back tournaments in order to clinch the GM-title, less than 3 years removed from being an inactive FM. These experiences were highlighted by playing on the top boards in Charlotte and St. Louis, playing GM Fabiano Caruana twice, and even hearing his game dissected by GM Caruana on the C-Squared podcast. Mark joined me to explain what he thinks has led to this incredible chess breakthrough, and to answer a question that GM Anish Giri recently tweeted- “Who is Mark A. Heimann?” Thanks to our sponsors Chessable.com! Their entire catalog is on sale through the end of the year! https://www.chessable.com/courses/ 0:02: GM-elect Mark Heimann joins the show!
