Angus McDonald had to escape from Scotland or risk arrest. In 1838, he contracted with the Hudson Bay Company to trade in the Pacific Northwest. There he discovers majestic mountains, raging rivers, and buffalo. He meets and marries Catherine, who is related to Nez Perce royalty, and together they face competing claims of British fur traders and gold seekers, settlers and Native Americans who've lives for thousands of years in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. In this week's After Hours, we sip on Big Angus Green Malt Whiskey from Coppersea Distillery. Join us! All About Angus Green Malt Whiskey (from Coppersea): 100% Hudson Valley barley, malted on our malt floor, mashed while still green and without kilning. THE RAREST EXPRESSION OF AN ANCIENT WHISKY STYLE Big Angus Green Malt honors our founding Master Distiller, Angus McDonald. We make this unique spirit from 100% un-kilned, sprouting green barley malt fresh off our malt floor. This style of whisky-making evolved in the days when Scotsmen could be killed for illegal distilling, and the need to avoid the malt-drying peat smoke that alerted the Crown's tax authorities was absolute. We floor-malt the barley in our own malt house in the traditional manner, hand-raking daily to ensure proper aeration in the sprouting grain. Then, at the moment when we would normally kiln-dry the malt to preserve it for later use as necessary, we mash directly with that green, germinating malt. As with all Coppersea spirits, the 100% green malted barley is fermented in open-top fermenters and distilled twice in direct-fired alembic stills, imparting a richer flavor, and then barrel at low proof of 105. In addition Angus is an ambassador for Human Rights Watch Australia and Asia. He received many awards for his wonderful arts and just recently was awarded with the People's Choice Award for his portrait of writer and filmmaker Behrouz Boochani who is a Kurd from eastern Kurdistan which is occupied by Iran. Angus directed and produced the famous documentary film called ”MANUS” which also received international a lot of attention on the refugees who were locked for years under very brutal conditions where unfortunately also Behrouz Boochani was held in. Angus tries to better the life of people by bringing to light the injustice which many many refugees are facing which also got him closer to the Kurdish cause. I personally think his work is very important for us Kurds because he is portraying and visualising the things we Kurds saw and know but always feel others around the world don't. Angus McDonald signed our Petition www.change.org/KurdPeople & we wanted to know more about how he developed more interest to the Kurdish cause which is sadly still widely ignored world wide. Thursday Night Live! June 13th - Refugees now and then - has Australia lost its compassion? Australia has a long history in resettling refugees, viewed as a world leader in the years after World War II and yet, policies and attitudes towards people who come here to seek asylum have hardened over the last two decades. Principled solutions to the complex and difficult problems faced by refugees in the world would seem to be lacking in contemporary Australian politics. If this is a reflection on the character of the nation, is it now fair to ask, have we lost our compassion? How quickly have some of us forgotten our past? Join Facilitator Dr Leticia Anderson, Lecturer in Humanities at Southern Cross University, in conversation with this months panel: Nathan Willis - PhD student and Solicitor, and Migration Consultant; Katka Adams - Visual artist and political refugee; and Angus McDonald - Visual artist and filmmaker advocating for more humanitarian approaches to managing the welfare of forcibly displaced people seeking asylum. 5.30pm there will be a film screening by Angus McDonald and Slate Cafe opens. Eric and I are on vacation so this episode is from...THE PAST. Wow, spooky, right? This week we chit chat about some good stuff. Lots of good stuff I definitely remember. Did not forget what was said in this episode since we recorded it a week ago and my ass is on a whole different plane of existence right now. So like here's the titles and please listen to these fuckin absolutely righteous episode. Keeping Up the Act Amelia Landhart: Tractor Gal U.S.S. Cloverfield ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ideas used: Sarah‏ @sarahkarolin - SAT/ACT exec goes undercover to try and discover the source of teenage cheaters. But this guy is 30 pretending to be 17. Angus McDonald‏ @natepthomps - Amelia Landhart: Tractor Gal Becks @MissTheKeep -There's a planet out there in space that's resembles ours just in a miniature version .but they're so much more advanced in technology that they destroy their planet. They sent off emergency rockets that carry as many people as they could but the Rockets were made so long ago that they failed not to long after being stable in space for a few hours. They crashed onto our planet and they're considered a new population of "aliens" but they're JUST like us (just mini no taller than 2ft) but we consider them aliens because they came for space but we integrate them into society and they eventually help us advance in our technologies and other stuff but there's racism and people don't accept them.   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eric Lee and Thomas Stapleton takes your suggestions and ideas and adapt them into good movie pitches for the Hollywood big wigs who are straight up desperate for material. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our theme was written and recorded by Nate Thompson.
