Ben Arc is a free open-source software advocate and founder of LNbits. In this interview, we discuss how LNbits helps to decentralize custodianship and how Bitcoin's widescale utility outweighs the environmental FUD. - - - - In April of this year, Arcane Research published the 2nd volume of its “The State of Lightning” report. It showed adoption of the payments system is growing rapidly. Transaction and usage data indicate exceptional growth (e.g. since January 2021 capacity on the Lightning network has increased by 450%). However, they don't provide the full picture: equally important is the flourishing ecosystem. There are well over a hundred companies working directly with Lightning: developing operating systems, node and liquidity services, wallets, payment infrastructure, financial services, rewards programs, gaming, podcast/streaming and social media payment options etc. etc. The investment such companies are attracting is growing: the prize is access to the world's best payment rail. LNbits are providing the services of a Point of Sale payment and accounting technology. Its founder, Ben Arc, started hacking hardware to integrate Lightning functionality after attending the very first Lightning hack day in 2018. Since then he has taken a passion to contribute free open-source software for the community, into a VC-funded business seeking to bring scalable products to market. LNbits already has a free open-source Lightning wallet/accounts system with an array of extensions enabling users to create paywalls, faucets, offline shops, and even a jukebox! But Ben continues to hack hardware: he has created a Lightning ATM that he provided a live demo of during the show. Those who attend Real Bedford should soon be able to see one of these! Ben is looking to help grow the adoption of a technology that can provide freedom through decentralization. Bitcoin, the world's most-valued cryptocurrency, has the potential to be a significant energy consumer in the future, but only if it reaches several million dollars per coin, according to new estimates by Arcane Research. Crypto research and analytics firm Arcane Research on Monday released a report estimating the development in Bitcoin's energy usage toward 2040. If the BTC price hits $2 million in 17 years, Bitcoin may consume 894 Terawatt-hours (TWh) per year, surging 10 times from today's level, the report suggests. Despite huge growth, such energy consumption would only account for 0.36% of the estimated global energy consumption in 2040, increasing from Bitcoin's 0.05% share today, the analyst estimated. The Future of Gaming on the Blockchain The GameFi space is a huge, evolving space that's constantly innovating as time goes on. Traditional game development studios are seeing the huge amount of investment capital in the space and are looking to see how the blockchain could solve some of the problems they face, or, enhance a players experience.   Niantic, the company behind Pokémon Go, starting to explore the blockchain Earlier this year, Niantic had met the team behind SpotX Games, a Miami-based company that describes itself as “a web3 innovation studio for the real-world metaverse”. Hanke was taken with SpotX's work and acquired the studio. “The potential for web3 is to move us back — to a more decentralized version of the internet,” Hanke said. “And to recapture some of that spirit and vision that was there when it started.”   Game developer Akatsuki announces $20 million web3 fund Japanese entertainment and gaming firm Akatsuki said on Wednesday that it has raised a $20 million fund focused on investing in web3 projects. The fund, dubbed Emoote, will look to back startups working on projects in GameFi, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse, Akatsuki said in a press release.
