Exploring The Paranormal & Sci-Fi Themes of The Twilight Zone | Arlen SchumerJoin us for a special The Michigan UFO Sightings & Paranormal Encounters Podcast episode as we welcome Arlen Schumer, author and historian of The Twilight Zone Companion. We'll explore the paranormal, sci-fi, and eerie themes that made Rod Serling's classic series legendary.
Whether people like comic books, comic book movies, or comic book characters, we all share a deep passion for tales of heroism that makes the world a better place. That's probably why comic book store Mike (played by Jesse Metcalfe of "Desperate Housewives") and new-kid-in-town Brandon (newcomer Micah Giovanni) take such a liking to each other. From writer/director Jonathan L. Bowen, "The Comic Shop" co-stars Tristan Mays ("MacGyver") as Mike's loyal employee Alex, who may have to take a job at a rival store when her hours get cut; Trevor Einhorn ("The Magicians", "Mad Men") as the spoiled and scheming rival store owner; and with cameos from Eric Roberts and Scott "Carrot Top" Thompson. Bowen's story frames the emotional journey of the characters against the backdrop of their love for indie comics and the unique community of creators and fans who often struggle to find a place in a market dominated by Marvel and DC. Shot on location in Las Vegas, "The Comic Shop" is a slice-of-life love letter to comic fans that general audiences will easily relate to. "The Comic Shop" reminds us that the best sources of inspiration are those around us who are willing to risk it all to help us find our way.

December is a good time to reflect and take stock of the year, and that's the basis of my conversation with this week's guest Jonathan Robinson. Jonathan is a creative powerhouse — a writer, a filmmaker, and a director, just to start — who's currently on a personal journey of self-discovery.We started off doing a bit of a recap of the past year, and Jonathan shed some light on what creative and experiential producers do and how he came into those titles through his work in the advertising industry. He also talked about working with AI and VR, and spoke about how his time spent at Facebook and Twitter helped shape him into his current calling as a storyteller. For Jonathan, chasing his passions and connecting with other people are what drives him. Nearly to the day, Tyler Crook returns to Comic Book Couples Counseling to discuss The Lonesome Hunters, this time digging into its follow-up series, The Wolf Child. As he proved during his last session, Crook is eager to crack open his story and root around inside. There is life here, and we need to know what makes it tick. Centered in this conversation is a paraphrased Jack Kirby quote. In these notes, we'll present it in full as it was spoken during an interview on The Masters of Comic Book Art, introduced by the equally radical Harlan Ellison. You can watch the whole thing HERE. "I'm a guy that lives with a lot of questions. I say, 'What's out there?' and I try to resolve that. And I never can. I don't think anybody can. Who's got the answers? I sure would like to hear the ultimate one. But I haven't yet. And so I live with a lot of questions. And I find that entertaining...If my life were to end tomorrow, it would be fulfilled in that manner. I would say, 'The Questions have been terrific.'" Tyler Crook's comics, especially these first two Lonesome Hunters volumes, are all about scratching at those questions and bumping against unknowable answers. The Lonesome Hunters: The Wolf Child #1 is Tyler Crook on a plate. His script, his art, his letters, his everything. The comic is an out-there horror/fantasy adventure with a powerfully compelling intergenerational friendship at its core. You can read it as straight escapist entertainment, but it invites you to press down a little deeper and consider your reflection within its pages. Yes, it's absolutely a Comic Book Couples Counseling book. We're extremely thankful to Tyler Crook for joining us once again on the show and being so generous with his process and philosophy. Our conversation is about as in-depth as you can get without spoiling every little detail about the narrative. However, we'll probably need Crook back on the podcast so we can have one of our epic Ultimate breakdown conversations about The Lonesome Hunters. The Lonesome Hunters: The Wolf Child #1 is now available from Dark Horse Comics, wherever fine comic books are sold (Click HERE to find the nearest one to you). You can continue your conversation with Tyler Crook via his Twitter, Instagram, and Website. Also, you can listen to his music through his Bandcamp page (although it's also available on Spotify, Apple Music, and the like). A lifelong love of art led Bob Budiansky to Marvel Comics where he spent 20 years drawing, writing and editing fantastic superheroes and supervillains. The Transformers, Spiderman, Sleep Walker and Ghost Rider comics have all been touched by Bob's imagination and creative sensibilities. Today, Bob still draws, designs and teaches when he's not creating and supervising recreation programs for the Borough of Fanwood, New Jersey. But it's his legacy as one of the creators of the Transformers that commands the attention at the many comic conventions he attends. Abby Denson is the award-winning author of Cool Japan Guide: Fun in the Land of Manga, Lucky Cats and Ramen, Cool Tokyo Guide: Adventures in the City of Kawaii Fashion, Train Sushi and Godzilla and the Kitty Sweet Tooth series (with Utomaru). Her most recent book, which we're going to talk about today, is Uniquely Japan: A Comic Book Artist Shares Her Personal Faves - Discover What Makes Japan The Coolest Place on Earth!Abby has scripted comics for Amazing Spider-Man Family, Powerpuff Girls comics, Simpsons comics, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Disney Adventures, and many others. We start off the show with Abby helping define for our listeners the difference between Japanese manga, graphic novels, superhero comics, and American style comics.Amy talks about how she used to read Japanese manga to study Japanese language, and tells what she thinks distinguishes manga from other types of comics including Abby's. She gives some of the features of Abby's books that make them stand out from others.Abby talks about the role of color in her comic-drawing and names Keith Haring as one of her inspirations. She especially loves drawing desserts and all kinds of foods!Abby talks about some of the challenges of putting together her two Japan guides and her latest, Uniquely Japan, which was much more of a multimedia effort.Amy mentions she especially likes the tips in the book, such as suggesting people order the teishoku daily special (set menu) when people go to a restaurant to get the chance to sample as many amazing Japanese foods as possible.Abby says the book aims to provide a fun way to learn about different Japanese topics. Parfaits for example! “You can see gorgeous parfait displays everywhere,” she says, referring to the plastic food models in the display window of many restaurants and cafes in Japan. "I find them so dazzling,” Abby says. This launches into a discussion of Japan being a very visual culture.Abby says Uniquely Japan is different from her previous books because Cool Japan and Cool Tokyo were conceived as guidebooks. They have travel tips and information helpful for tourists planning their first trip to Japan. Uniquely Japan can be read just to learn about Japanese culture.Abby elaborates on the reception of her books in Japan and some surprising feedback she received from Japanese readers of the book. She also elaborates on the “Street Sites” chapter in her book that highlights decorative manhole covers, police boxes, and the specific design motifs of each town you can discover. "As a visual artist, it really makes you feel validated to see all this amazing graphic design everywhere. I feel like it's used so much more aesthetically, and in a more visually pleasurable manner in Japan than other in other places. The little accents and the motifs come together for a visually pleasurable experience.”Amy mentions Abby's use of stamps in Uniquely Japan, referring to the rubber stamps at every railway station that you can press into your diary or journal. The stamp features a graphic of the place you visited along with that town's motif. This leads to a discussion of “stamp rallies” (and where to find them) and also collecting the beautifully brushed goshuin stamps from temples. When Amy asks Abby for an interesting backstory to one of her books, Abby tells the story of writing Kitty Sweet Tooth, a collaboration that started with a random meeting of an artist in a bar. The first book, Kitty Sweet Tooth, was published last year and the next book, Kitty Sweet Tooth Makes a Movie, will be published this fall.Lastly, Abby reveals her 3 favorite books on Japan and why:1. Manga! Manga!: The World of Japanese Comics by Frederik L. Schodt2. Tokyo on Foot: Travels in the City's Most Colorful Neighborhoods by Florent Chavouet3 Himawari House, a fictional graphic novel by Harmony BeckerAmy ends the podcast by suggesting what Abby's next book should be to which Abby responds that her husband keeps telling her the same thing. Action, adventure, intrigue? None of these things abide in this podcast, but we do chat about a lot of things that harbour these necessary virtues of entertainment. Namely Netflix Manga adaptations, questionable art and animation along with a bit of history and theology to boot. We even diverged into a chat about Gears of War… again. So sit back, relax and don't worry, Mervyn only gets slightly gatekeepy when he starts yammering on about art.Available on Amazon Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Castbox, Deezer, Podcast Addict, and Podchaser.Spicy Beets: https://soundcloud.com/jesse-senpaiPaper Lab Studios: www.paperlabstudios.comFollow us on Instagram: @zippertan @paperlabstudiosFollow us on Twitter: @zippertan @paperlabSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/paperlabstudios

My guest today is Sal Abbinanti. Sal is an art rep for the comic book superstars Alex Ross and Bill Sienkiewicz. By night Sal is also an artist, and for over the last two decades, Sal has been obsessed with creating a graphic novel inspired by a visit he made to Brazil in his early twenties. With COVID, he could finally sit down and get back to the workshop and tell the story lingering since that experience. Now that story is launching on Kickstarter under the name of the hostage. You can find it in the link in the show notes. I highly recommend you check out Sal's work because I think his style is unique, and that's one of the things that grabbed me about the hostage itself, but across all the work that he shares on his social media, I think there was a lot there. It's part of the reason why I wanted to reach out to him. This conversation gets very interesting for me because not only does Sal truly appreciate comic book Art, but art more broadly, and he's truly a master of craft or a student of craft in the sense of an artist. He talks about being open to new ideas and having a framework that allows you to constantly be receptive to new ideas, whether they may pop up randomly or planned or however they may happen. He's always constantly trying to push himself. Many artists, especially if you're into comic books, will take a lot from this conversation. With that, everyone, please enjoy this conversation with Sal Abbinanti. Show Notes (00:04:08) Becoming a Comic Artist (00:06:59) When did art and comic books enter the story? He hustled for any job he could and has gone on to draw for comics like My Little Pony and Star Wars. Now, Tony is releasing his first comic book, “Stray Dogs.” In this episode, Kristi and Tony discuss the importance of evolving your dreams.

Pop culture aficionado ARLEN SCHUMER makes his debut with us to examine the last 80 years of multiple art forms. Arlen will discuss his comic book illustrations, how he accomplishes and presents them. We will delve into the legacy of media heroes that emerged from the early '60s like Rod Serling and James Bond. Arlen brought his artistic eye to analyzing many of the haunting images from "The Twilight Zone" and presented his insights in his book "Visions from The Twilight Zone." Arlen will also expound upon the early career of Bruce Springsteen and his monumental 1978 concert at the Capitol Theatre. ARLEN SCHUMER, MFA creates award-winning comic book-styled illustrations for the advertising and editorial markets, and is one of the foremost historians of comic book art—Comic Book Artist magazine named him "one of the more articulate and enthusiastic advocates of comic book art in America,” his coffeetable art book The Silver Age of Comic Book Art won the Independent Publishers Award for Best Popular Culture Book (http://www.silverageofcomicbookart.com), and ABC-TV's 2020 called him “one of the countryʼs preeminent authorities on comics and culture" after interviewing him (http://youtu.be/_e634FDTBaI). His other books are Visions from The Twilight Zone and The Neal Adams Sketchbook. https://arlenschumer.com
On this interview episode, Andy and Derek are pleased to have as their guest Arlen Schumer. His book, The Silver Age of Comic Book Art, has recently been released in a beautiful, new revised edition from Archway Publishing. It originally came out in 2003 as a softcover, with a hardbound companion that included an extra section, but in this revised edition Schumer includes all the material from the longer hardbound release, but with brighter images and cleaner type. The result is a unique visual experience, a text on comics art history in the form of a coffee table book. As the guys point out in their discussion, this is the kind of book that every comics aficionado will want to get, and the perfect gift for anyone unfamiliar with the medium but interested in the many forms of American art. The Two Guys kick off the conversation by asking Arlen how he defines the Silver Age, and he argues that while everyone can agree that it began in 1956 with the publication of Showcase #4, the era ended in 1970, a watershed year that inaugurated the way we read comics today. Then they get into the particulars of the book, Arlen's chapter-by-chapter visual study of legends Carmine Infantino, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Gil Kane, Joe Kubert, Gene Colan, Jim Steranko, and Neal Adams. They spend quite a bit of time discussing the work of Infantino, Colan, and Adams (one of Arlen's favorites), but the artist they spend the most time exploring is Gil Kane. In fact, on the topic of Kane's art -- specifically, the way he rendered punches -- Andy is able to flex his superhero acumen in ways he normally doesn't on the podcast. The guys also talk with Arlen about the creators he didn't have the room to explore in the book, many of whom receive some attention in the final "More Masters" chapter of the book: Murphy Anderson, Wally Wood, John Buscema, Nick Cardy, and Curt Swan. In many ways, this is a departure for The Comics Alternative, a podcast devoted to non-mainstream, non-superhero comics, but given the significance of this book as both a work of art and a necessary critical/historical text, the guys just had to have Schumer on their show.
