When we last spoke to NJ CAR president Jim Appleton in April, New Jersey was in the midst of the COVID-19 shutdown. All vehicle sales were done remotely, all delivery was contactless, and there was an 80 percent drop in vehicle sales state-wide. As April came to a close, sales were down 50 percent but continued to steadily rise. Sales really started to pick back up in June and July as Coronavirus restrictions began to loosen. The pent up consumer demand started rushing back into the dealerships. While sales look strong as we settle into August, the industry now faces inventory challenges. The OEM supply change started breaking down as far back as late 2019 according to Jim. China, South Korea, and Japan were affected by the virus and couldn’t manufacture the parts that were then assembled in the U.S. As the pandemic started rolling through the U.S., those plants were forced to shut down as well. So, what the industry is seeing is a rolling disruption that Jim believes will go well into October of this year. “Dealers have become much more efficient. They’re working leaner in their sales and BDCs,” says Jim. “So, this combined with the fact that we’re back at record sales levels with fewer people and less overhead, and then you layer on top of that, the PPP money and dealers are looking at a pretty good quarter.” As president of the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers, Jim Appleton has represented New Jersey’s franchised new car and truck retailers for over 20 years. https://www.cbtnews.com/what-the-future-holds-for-new-jersey-dealers-jim-appleton-nj-car/
We’ve been hearing and seeing a lot over the past few weeks about anti-racism education and the need for white people (like me) to learn about how deep systemic racism is embedded throughout our society and the actions we can take to combat racism and anti-Blackness. This is a very different conversation about racism. My guest is April Harter, who is a therapist and licensed clinical social worker and the founder of the Racism Recovery Center. April has what I call a radically different approach to understanding racism. She looks at it from a behavioral/psychological/personal level. What she has found is that racism is rooted in childhood trauma/abuse/neglect and narcissism. This is not exclusive to people who join white supremacist organizations like the KKK. This is all of us who are white. As I discovered from this conversation, I tend to be very cerebral and intellectual (from my academic background and my personality). I thus intellectualize my understanding of racism (which really is a defense mechanism) - and is not a substitute for the personal work I need to do. As April says, activism is not a substitute or solution for dealing with our personal racism. I invite you to listen to this conversation with an open mind and an open heart. In this episode, April and I talk about: The two types of racism: institutional (history and the law) and personal (behavioral and psychological) The trauma, narcissism, and codependency behind racism (which results in hyper-vigilance and defensiveness) The performative allyship that we see on social media - and the connection to perfectionism, shame, and inauthenticity 95-98% of white people *haven’t* done their personal psychological racism work (which results in denial) Most white people don’t recognize the emotional neglect or abuse they experienced growing up (including perfectionism and over-achievement) White women saviorism and the connection to codependency in a patriarchal society Take action and do the work from a place of LOVE, not saviorism The stages of change: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse Activism and learning about racism tend to be a way to bypass the personal healing journey About My Guest: April Harter, LCSW is a former medical social worker, where she provided counseling to her patients and their family members to help them cope with the trauma of medical emergencies in the state of Texas. She later moved to Colorado and started her private practice to serve QTPOC patients with a history of racial trauma. After having worked with QTPOC, she decided to help prevent racism in society by working with white clients as a coach using the Racist Signature Theory. Finally, she opened up the Racism Recovery Center to offer psychotherapy to white people in interracial families. About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. Early this spring, I was working in my greenhouse, pinching back stalky plants, when I accidentally broke off a long stem of a geranium plant. I placed that stalk in a tall, clear vase half full of water and put on the kitchen table. This simple bouquet soon gave birth to a squiggly mosquito larva that added an extra interest to breakfast time. As April advanced, my partner, Jill, and I kept track of it as we ate. One morning, we noticed it had changed into a tiny pupa, a black creature that looked a little like a shrunken tadpole. The pupa was more adventurous than the larva, and we kept track of it for almost a week as it travelled up and down the glass vase. Then one day, we were drinking coffee and we saw that our companion had changed shape once again and had become a fat mosquito. We knew that if we allowed it to get into the house, it could become an enemy and either bite one of us or die trying. So I took it outside and set it free. And then I wondered what to make of this
To mask or not to mask⏤that is the question they say! The first official message coming from the task force was not to wear the face mask. As April approached, that sentiment started to change. The New York Times reported: The Trump administration is close to recommending that all Americans wear cloth masks if they go out in public, a change in position that reflects new concerns that the coronavirus is being spread by infected people who have no symptoms and new data suggesting the United States is not yet slowing the rate of infections. At a White House briefing Thursday evening, both President Trump and Vice President Pence said that new guidance on masks would be issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the coming days. And then finally on April 3rd, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges Americans to use the cloth face coverings during trips to the grocery store and other public outings. The guidance, according to the CDC document, is intended not to guard the wearer but instead to prevent the wearer from unknowingly transmitting the virus to others. Wearing masks may have surprising unintended consequence, reports Fast Company. Could a mask provide such a strong sense of security that people have become lax in protecting themselves in all the other ways that are recommended? ARE YOU CONFUSED YET? Indeed, most Americans are. In the face of that confusion; we started to see the face masks in public settings, as business establishments were requiring the use of face masks, in addition to social distancing, and not buying all the toilet paper.... we hope! One listener happened to hear the commentary on Viewpoint This Sunday when it was discussed in one segment where folks were talking about the fact they didn’t want to wear the damn masks, and they certainly didn’t want to be ordered to wear the damn masks. Demasking America: I recently listened to a favorite show the other day and the topic of discussion was about wearing face masks. The consensus was that it was unwarranted, unhealthy, and unnecessary. The participating guests seemed to speak particularly to their individual rights. They also shared a frustration at the glances and visual scorns they received when not wearing a mask in public areas. The next day I read an article about a birthday party in Pasadena, California. During the shelter-at-home orders, a large group of extended family member and close friends got together for a celebration. They did not social distance. They did not wear a mask. Five partygoers tested positive, and through contact tracking officials discovered many more in attendance had become ill. As April approaches, tenants whose incomes have dwindled during the state's "shelter in place" order still have to come up with monthly rent while landlords and homeowners still have mortgage payments due. Some elected officials have called for a moratorium on evictions and for landlords to freeze rental payments. Four of the nation's five largest banks have agreed to delay mortgage payments and suspend foreclosures for California homeowners for up to 90 days. That has left many people dealing with fear and uncertainty about their housing costs. We discuss how coronavirus has impacted the housing market and what relief and resources are available to landlords and tenants.

As April draws near, the list of players who wont be ready for the start of the season seems longer and longer. Clayton Kershaw is very unlikely to make his customary opening day start and on Monday, the Braves confirmed Mike Foltynewicz won't be ready by opening day either. As always, ADOPTION NOW focuses on the many powerful stories centered around adoption and foster care. This episode also includes a topic April Fallon is new to, the topic of surrogacy. Dr. Claire Dumke tells us the story of her two daughters, Ruby and Hazel, and how she pursued both adoption and surrogacy at the same time. As a result of this, her two daughters were born 8 months apart! Key Links Insights Colorado Assessments and Therapy: (303) 935-5307 The episode focuses on the many joys that were felt throughout her experience, but also on the challenging aspects. And in addition, surrogacy is explained: the price, what to expect, regulations, details on medication, and so forth. Below are four of the most crucial aspects of this episode ranging from surrogacy in a nutshell, transracial adoption, the importance of agencies and the selection process for adoption, as well as the relational interplay between biological and adoptive mothers. [#1 What to Expect When your Surrogate is Expecting] As was the case with Dr. Claire, surrogacy may be an option for a family if they have embryos either through IVF but cannot personally carry them to full term. It is very expensive! Dr. Claire mentions that the price was in the six-figure range at least. But as always, no amount of money is too much for the wonderful gift of life. Dr. Claire also discusses and warns of the emotional distress that can occur for surrogates after they give birth. Counseling is a very powerful tool for this common circumstance and Dr. Claire highly recommends that the biological family is prepared to provide this resource. [#2 Transracial Open Adoption ] Ruby--Dr. Claire’s first daughter and who was adopted through an open agreement with her African American birth mother--didn’t make Claire nervous in the slightest at the dynamic. Although she does talk about how nervous she was to meet the extended family of the biological mother, she stresses just how beautiful and wonderful Ruby is. The concept of providing racial mirrors for Ruby is brought up as well, meaning that considerable attention to positive reinforcement of Ruby’s racial identity is a large focal point in their family. And through Claire’s relationship with Ruby’s biological mother and her extended family, Ruby has that much more reinforcement. [#3 Agencies and The Adoption Selection Process ] When talking about how expectant mothers choose adoptive parents for their child, the best advice is, “Be yourself!” As April states; you never know just what detail will stand out and speak to a birth mother in the midst of her choice. And like it is discussed within the episode, the difference between you being chosen or not could have to do with if you have a golden retriever or not; be yourself! Agencies are very important for introducing you to a bigger pool of possibilities for being matched with a child. And the multi-state agencies also give you a higher probability to be selected faster due to more choices. The Adoption Choices of Colorado was the agency Dr. Claire used. She and her husband were pleasantly surprised to find themselves in Texas for Ruby after just two short months of waiting. [#4 Relationship Dynamics Between Surrogates, Biological Mothers, and Adoptive Parents ] There is a fair amount of discussion on the interactions between adoptive parents, the birth mother and a surrogate mother. There can be a lot of grief after placement, so counseling and sensitivity towards that issue are imperative. As Dr. Claire states during the episode, what words are there to express to a birth mother or surrogate mother besides gratitude, gratitude, and more gratitude! In addition, the whole process has strengthened the bond between Dr. Claire and her husband. As April comes to a close, this episode of the podcast covers a lot of territory. There is a brief wrap up of Terry's time at the 2015 Florida Film Festival where he watched The Little Death and Alphaville. The bulk of the discussion is about Wilco's debut album A.M. which celebrated its 20th anniversary back in March. To provide that discussion with good context, we revisit the end of Uncle Tupelo and talk briefly about the other band that came from the ashes of Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt. Terry talks about the one record store visit that helped make him the fan of Wilco that he remains to this day. To wrap up the episode, there is a brief discussion of another album marking its 20th anniversary. April 1995 brought us Home IX, an all-time favorite of Terry's. “Story” is the title and substance of a presentation of the academic pursuits of Vincent F. A. Golphin. Personal stories chart the basic elements of human lives and societies, and in that sense, are a glue that holds disparate parts into a structure. Stories are what Professor Golphin deals with in various forms in the classroom, speeches and publications as a poet, fiction writer, essayist, commentator, memoirist, cultural analyst and ethnographer. As April's featured Faculty Scholar, he will discuss the role of stories in society and culture and share how they are used in a recent memoir, poetry collection and ethnographic study.
