The ANC in the Eastern Cape has condemned AfriForum's attempt to pressure the NPA into reviewing a case against Premier Oscar Mabuyane and ANC NEC member Babalo Madikizela. AfriForum's push for private prosecution relates to the alleged misuse of funds for transporting mourners to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's funeral in 2018. The ANC has labeled this move as "unethical and illegal," claiming it undermines the NPA's independence and noting that the issue was already resolved by the Public Protector, High Court, and NPA. ANC Eastern Cape Communications Head, Gift Ngqondi spoke to Elvis Presslin
AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit is considering a private prosecution against Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane. This follows the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) decision not to pursue charges in a multimillion-rand scandal tied to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's funeral. Allegations claim a businessman was paid for unrendered services and directed to channel funds to politicians and companies. Nel argues the evidence is compelling and accuses the NPA of political bias in its refusal to act. Elvis Presslin spoke to Barry Bateman, spokesperson for AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit

Welcome to Pagecast, the book-centred podcast series presented by Jonathan Ball Publishers. In this episode, Shaun de Waal, News24 Books Editor, interviews South African writer Jonny Steinberg about his latest book, "Winnie and Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage." In this captivating book, Steinberg explores the marriage between Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. As Mandela spent years in prison, his love for Winnie grew, portraying her in his letters as an idealized version of his wife, frozen in time like young lovers. However, Winnie, who was his political equal, became increasingly distant from her husband's political beliefs. Behind Mandela's back, Winnie attempted to orchestrate an armed seizure of power, a path that he feared would lead to an endless war. Jonny Steinberg narrates the compelling story of this extraordinary marriage, delving into its desires, obsessions, and betrayals, while also weaving it into the political tapestry of South African history. "Winnie and Nelson" is a modern epic that demonstrates how the trauma within a marriage can reverberate throughout an entire nation. It also resembles a Shakespearean drama, intertwining themes of love, commitment, and timeless questions about revolution, such as seeking retribution versus pursuing a negotiated peace. With powerful and tender emotional insight, Steinberg reveals the extent to which these inseparable leaders would go for each other, as well as the boundaries they set. Ultimately, they understood that their union was not just a marriage, but a struggle to define the policies of anti-apartheid. Thank you for listening, and enjoy this episode of Pagecast. About Jonny Steinberg: Jonny Steinberg is the author of several books about everyday life in the wake of South Africa's transition to democracy. He is a two-time winner of South Africa's premier non-fiction prize, the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award, and an inaugural winner of the Donald Windham-Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prizes. Until 2020, he was professor of African studies at Oxford University, and he currently teaches part-time at Yale and is visiting professor at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (Wiser).
Author Jonny Steinberg's new book, "Winnie and Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage," explores the complex relationship between Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, two of the world's best-known freedom fighters. Steinberg joined The World's host Marco Werman to discuss the fraught political partnership of these iconic revolutionaries.

The Bhisho High court has granted Eastern Cape premier, Oscar Mabuyane and public works MEC, Babalo Madikizela an interim interdict to stay Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane's remedial action. This is related to the public protector's report implicating Mabuyane and Madikizela on misappropriation of funds during the memorial service for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Mabuyane's lawyer Ngido Sakhela
Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has hit back at allegations of factionalism related to the timing of the release of her report on allegedly siphoned funds that were meant for transport to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's memorial service. The Eastern Cape provincial executive committee (PEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) met on Monday to discuss the report. In a statement, it alleged that Mkhwebane timed the report to coincide with the elections, which are scheduled for 1 November. "It is unfortunate that the report of the Public Protector (PP) is released on the verge of the local government elections when it was finalised two months back. This stance and timing regrettably weaponised the belief that the PP is a party to intra-party and external factionalism," the PEC said. The Public Protector found that Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and Public Works MEC Babalo Madikizela unduly benefitted from funds that were intended for the memorial service. Mabuyane allegedly benefitted from R450 000 which was used to pay for upgrades to his East London home. Madikizela allegedly received R350 000. The ANC in the province was said to have been paid R288 000. The roughly R1.1-million was transferred from the Eastern Cape government to the Mbizana Local Municipality. It was intended to help fund transport for the public to the memorial service. Mkhwebane's office said the allegations were far from the truth. It countered that Madikizela and Mbizana Municipal Manager Luvuyo Mahlaka were the ones who asked for extensions in response to notices issued in June and July. The Public Protector's office then compiled the report and investigated certain aspects of the matter. Mkhwebane's office said, "The report was released along with seven others at the office's most recent end-of-quarter media briefing. The office does not stop exercising its powers or performing its functions merely because an election is approaching." It said: "That would be at odds with the Section 181(2) of the Constitution, which provides that the office is independent, and subject only to the Constitution and the law, and that it must be impartial and must exercise its powers and perform its functions without fear, favour or prejudice." The Public Protector's office added that the Eastern Cape ANC should concern its self with the contents of the report - firstly on whether public funds were siphoned to Mabuyane, Madikizela and the ANC and secondly, on the criminal questions that arise from the funds being transferred to unintended beneficiaries. "The office of the Public Protector stands by its report. The office has also taken note of intentions by some of the parties to obtain an order suspending the implementation of the remedial action, pending the judicial review of the report. The office looks forward to a speedy review process to pave the way for full accountability," the Public Protector's office said.

Officially, it was called the hearing into the Mandela United Football Club. Unofficially, everyone referred to it as the Winnie hearing. For nine days between November and December 1997, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela faced a battery of journalists in Johannesburg at the Truth Commissionís special hearing. "She created her own vigilante gang" out of the Football Club, said one of her fellow top ANC members. But Madikizela-Mandela, one of the most potent symbols of apartheid resistance, appeared unfazed. Two of the most intriguing characters to appear before the Truth Commission were an idol of the liberation struggle and a killer of the apartheid state: Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Joe Mamasela. She was a victim of gross human rights abuses. The apartheid government and its policemen harassed her, banished her to Brandfort in the Free State in 1977 for eight years and jailed her husband, Nelson Mandela, for a generation. Joe Mamasela, on the other hand, was a victim of both the ANC and the Security Police. His liberation movement accused him of being a police informer in 1979 and burnt his brother to death. The Security Police captured him at an ANC safe house near Pretoria, tortured him and tamed him as their "terrorist". But at separate and highly emotional hearings, both Madikizela-Mandela and Mamasela stood accused of perpetrating gross violations of human rights: abducting, assaulting and murdering fellow black South Africans. She denied the allegations. He admitted to them. Both refused to seek amnesty. Often when Black History Month rolls around, we focus on the emancipation efforts that happened in North America. I get pretty offended that we don't pay homage to the emancipation efforts that took place in other Black spaces around the world, so this month I profiled people (their history, their accomplishments, and their legacy) in the hopes in expanding conversations about Black History to include all of the interconnected revolutions that have allowed for us to enjoy the freedoms we have today across the African Diaspora. Episode 38 is about Winnie Madikizela Mandela, the mother of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement.

In our inaugural episode, we have a conversation with Bishop Paul Verryn, Methodist minister, human rights advocate, captivating mystic and champion of the poor. He describes the work he is currently doing around South Africa, hearings in communities called Spaces of Hope. Reminiscent of, but not related to the TRC, these hearings invite anyone to bring any subject matter to the fore. This ranges from apartheid wounds still wide open, to current human rights violations and all the trauma, difficulty and sadness in between. Its a phenomenal initiative that can play a critical role in South Africa’s health and functionality. The second part of the interview is much more personal. We wanted to know how he not only survived decades of trauma, his own and those around him, but how he remains functional, focussed, active and passionate in the world. We asked him what he did to survive the public attack on his person by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in 1998 when she accused him of molesting children, a charge he was cleared of. In this tender conversation, Bishop Verryn talks frankly and generously about how he overcame this devastating trauma. He also tells us what he draws on to do his work, and why he is so focussed on poor and marginalised people and what that means spiritually.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Days after Whites around the planet faked veneration for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s philosophy of non-violence and loving the Racism out of Whites, President Donald J. Trump joined an international White posse including Britain and France in launching a military attack in Syria. The New York Times described the violent offensive as effort to "show Western (White) resolve." Speaking of brute White force, a black 14-year-old Michigan teen was nearly killed by a White man for missing the school bus. Brennan Walker knocked on retired firefighter Jeffrey Ziegler's door in hopes of getting directions to his school. Ziegler's wife allegedly accused the black teen of breaking into the house, and the former fireman grabbed a shotgun and began shooting at Walker. The teen was uninjured, and Ziegler was arrested and charged with attempted murder. In other court news, disgraced entertainment legend Bill Cosby began his retrial facing charges of sexual misconduct. Mimicking the dismantling of Cosby's reputation, Whites also invested a substantial chunk of the week besmirching the life and times of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who died last week at the age of 81. Counsel representing the former wife of the late president Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, has presented their arguments in the Mthatha High Court on her claim to the house and land at Qunu outside Mthatha. Programledare: Cecilia Blomberg Producent: Marie Liljedahl
