broadcasting straight from the heart of the jacuzzi-verse (in a quantum overlap with the heart of the western imperialist, death-cult empire!), let's talk about death, baby. but death and uncertainty as secret core drivers of our lives via the unconscious decisions we make, the people we gravitate towards, and the ways we feel about ourselves. so, let's take a cosmically unhinged journey through the twisty relationship between death awareness, collective death anxiety, and self-esteem. AND THEN, we'll explore what's on the other side—the hope, the compassion, the binary-dissolving, the power of mutualism! dana also shares about her time in post-Katrina New Orleans and more. we truly hope you enjoy this episode of crying in my jacuzzi, where we live, laugh, love in the anthropocene.~show notes (aka a reading list you really need)~"worm at the core: on the role of death in life" by sheldon solomon"foundations of violence" by grace jantzen"this mortal coil" article in SUN magazine"a paradise built in hell: the extraordinary communities that arise in disaster" by rebecca solnit"mutual aid: an illuminated factor of evolution" ak press"solidarity: the past, present and future of a world-changing idea" by astra taylor and leah hunt-hendrix/// sound-editing/design ~ rose blakelock, theme song ~ kat ottosen, podcast art ~ natalee miller///Support the Show.

In this episode, I sit down with actor, singer, musician & songwriter, Eleri Ward. And if you have been listening to Let Perfect Burn, then you have heard Eleri's incredible voice and her soulful original music. This summer, Eleri is opening for Josh Groban for his "Harmony Tour". Her signature indie-folk sound is most notable on her album A Perfect Little Death. This album was produced by Ghostlight Records, and features Eleri's covers of Stephen Sondheim classics. In speaking about her amazing upcoming summer adventure, Eleri says, “I'm going to be doing this alone with the guitar, but in front of thousands of people. I'm freaked out. But also, excited AF about it.”The genesis of A Perfect Little Death came during Covid. Eleri took to her walk-in closet and created an arrangement of the Sondheim song that she couldn't get out of her head. Her Joanna Reprise arrangement and homemade video was created the next day, and before long, her social media posts took off. Over the course of a month, she recorded all 13 songs to create the album. She had a friend mix and master it. She took a Polaroid of herself holding a guitar for the album. She says, “When something is truly raw and organic, you can feel it. And I can't help but wonder if that's the thing that people have responded to.”Eleri uses her reach to encourage others to put their work into the world and to make art from their authentic selves. “There's something about people continuing and truly putting themselves out there, even if it's uncomfortable or no one's watching. Because you don't know what can happen to that work that you put out years from now.”Highlights from Eleri:"It can be hard for me to let go and just trust that the audience's reaction is the truth versus my own inner experience that no one else is seeing. And I'm just I'm really, really hard on myself. And I'm working on not being so hard on myself. But it's definitely a double edged sword, because it's like, that clearly has worked for me in terms of working hard and being the best that I can possibly be.""And it's like, jeez girl, give yourself a break—you're a human being. And they gave you a standing O, and that should be reason enough to ease up on yourself and believe that the imperfections of that performance gave them a special experience that they'll never get if they watch a video.""A lot of the time as an artist, you don't even realize the gifts that you're giving people. And that is a really beautiful thing. I can't stress enough how important it is to me for people to fearlessly and continuously put their work out there. Because that is a gift they are giving, even if they have no idea they are giving it to somebody."Don't Miss a Beat. While not all the stories this week hit the mark, we had a lot of fun discussing them! Prepare yourself for birth control tampering, a misuse of ashes, and a VERY in depth tutorial on proper gun toting. You won't want to miss the shenanigans our ladies find themselves in this week!
Kate Mulvany is a professional storyteller. An award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and actor, she's built a name for herself in her incredible performances, whether in The Great Gatsby, The Little Death, or opposite Al Pacino in the Amazon series Hunters. On stage she's redefined roles like Richard III, and Kate is acclaimed for her writing, holding a knack for adapting and reinterpreting Australian classics. The latest, is her version of Playing Beatie Bow, and in the week before her sold out season at Sydney Theatre Company kicked off, I asked her to Take 5. Away from her CV, Kate has lived an extraordinary life; filled with challenges and heartaches, but also hope and opportunity. For all of these reasons, I was so excited to sit down with her. If you love a good yarn, you're in the right place. I asked Kate to share her backstory across five songs, and from The Muppets to Bowie to Ben Salter, this is a beautiful conversation about the transformative power of story. This week you get to enjoy some riveting stories about Bigfoot, McDonald's police, and the single most inane thing ever put to print. There are many tangents. We know you love our tangents. You deserve them. Tangents.

After attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, Drew Galloway moved to San Antonio furthering his career in the wine industry working with large wine retailers. While in San Antonio, he was bit by the public policy bug and went back to school. Since then, he has immersed himself in voter registration and voter engagement issues through MOVE Texas. He shares successes and discusses his passion for bagpipes. Transcript: Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenido San Antonio. Welcome to the Alamo Hour discussing the people, places, and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On the Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right, welcome to this episode of the Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Drew Galloway. Drew is the executive director of MOVE Texas, and also a bagpipe player. We'll talk to him about that in a little bit. MOVE Texas was started in 2013 by some students at UTSA right here in San Antonio. The goal was to increase participation in local elections. Really I think it's largely been doing that by way of voter registration and we're going to talk to Drew about that. Drew, thanks for being here. Drew Galloway: Thanks, Justin. Awesome to be here with you today. Justin: I got to know about y'all through a mutual friend Stephen Lopez when he was doing some fundraiser. Drew: Stephen's been with us for a couple years now and he's now serving as the board chair. Justin: I didn't know that. Well, I won't hold that against you. Stephen will listen to this and he'll give me his critiques on how I did. He always does. I started all these with a top 10 give a little color to who I'm talking to. I'm just going to walk you through some. They change every time. Drew: Let's go. Justin: All right. When and why did you move to San Antonio? Drew: I got a job with Spec's Family Partners. I was working in the wine business. They reached out. They wanted me to do a new market development for them and I came to San Antonio. Justin: What year was that? Drew: That was 2011. Justin: New market. Did that mean they were just starting to move in here? Drew: They had the store that was in the north part of the city. I helped work at that store and then open the days of all a store and a couple of others. Justin: The one close to me is the one about the airport and it's pretty sad. Drew: It's tucked away under that bridge. Justin: You go to the Spec's in Houston and they've got all the bells and whistles and cheeses and meats and you go to that one by the airport and it's sad. Drew: If you go to the flagship store in Houston, you get spoiled. Justin: All right. Well, we'll take that up with specs. We're all doing our best to support right now. Things are strange. You were talking to me off the record about how you're doing some cooking but are you doing any of the to-gos or the takeouts, the places that are trying to survive and we're all trying to help. Are there any that you've found, "Hey, they've got a great deal like supporting them?" We did Play Lane yesterday and it was fantastic. Any other the places you've been frequenting? Drew: No. There's a little wine shop called Little Death. That is right on the St. Mary's strip. I've been frequenting them just walk in pick up a bottle of wine just because- Justin: You live over there? Drew: No. I live on the south west side. That's one my favorite wine bar in the city. If you've never been at the Little Death you should go. Justin: Were you there when Stephen was cooking his Italian tripe? Drew: No. Justin: Did you see it? Drew: No. I did not. Justin: I was there. Drew: What? Justin: Not only do I support. I went to their, and it
Michael Nava, whose latest novel in the Henry Rios mystery series is titled “Carved in Bone,” is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky. When Michael Nava began writing his Henry Rios mysteries in the late 1980s, the only other mystery writer with a gay male detective was Joseph Hansen. But Henry Rios is more: one of the first Latino noir detectives in American literature. Michael Nava finished the series several years ago, but when rights reverted, he chose to revise and publish the books himself. The first novel in the series, “The Little Death,” was completely rewritten as “Lay Your Sleeping Head” in 2016, and “Carved in Bone,” a new novel that serves as a sequel to that, as well as a bridge to the later Rios novels, was published in 2019. Michael Nava's novel “Lay Your Sleeping Head” is now a kpfa.org podcast, adapted and produced by Michael Nava. The post Michael Nava appeared first on KPFA.
