The transformation that Steven Baert is leading as Chief People and Organisation Officer at Novartis, in shaping culture and leadership to a re-imagined medicine is hugely impressive. As Steven explains in this week's episode of the podcast, Novartis is successfully fuelling a scientific and entrepreneurial spirit of the company through its inspired, curious and un-bossed culture. This equips the people closest to the customer or product with the freedom to own the important decisions about their work for themselves. Novartis is also empowering their people by re-imagining its approach to performance management. As one of the worlds foremost science companies, that is entirely fitting that Novartis has taken a scientific approach to diagnosing, developing, trialling and productising its approach to performance management. In our conversation Steven and I discuss: How he partners with CEO Vasant Narasimhan and the rest of the executive team at Novartis The concept of un-bossing and what that entails for leaders How Novartis has diagnosed that their previous performance management culture was a point of friction for employe How Novartis has taken a scientific approach to re-imagining performance management involving 16,000 people The four elements of the new approach to performance management, encompassing objectives, feedback, recognition and reward This episode is a must listen for anyone interested or involved in the role of organisational culture and performance. So that is Business Leaders, Chief HR Officers and anyone in a Strategy, People, Analytics, Culture, Employee Experience or HR Business Partner role. As Steven wraps up the school year, ordination is 3 years away. This brings up the questions; What is a Priest? and the more important question is; Who is the Priest? What then, is the role of the Laity? We all have a Universal Call to Holiness.Jesus has atoned for our sins, but this desires a response from us. This response flows from the understanding that we have been rescued. In this age when it is harder to live an authentic Catholic Faith, we are called to be the Leaven of the World.
It’s daunting to wake up every day and try your best at whatever it is that you do. Maybe it’s your job, maybe it’s real estate, maybe it’s writing a book. When you sit down at your desk, there’s that little voice that says “get another cup of coffee” or “just take a little email break before you start” or “you’re not going to get anything done, who are you kidding?”This is the voice of resistance, and to author Steven Pressfield, it’s a voice that needs to be silenced and controlled at all costs. Steven should know, he wrote the book on fighting resistance, The War of Art, where he talks about how to keep up inspiration, even when there isn’t any to be found. As Steven puts it “an amateur does things when they feel like it, a professional doesn’t care how they feel, they just do it.”This is something many real estate investors struggle with. We want to buy another property, but we get stuck in analysis paralysis, or scared off by some new type of financing, or don’t want to take on another rehab. Professionals don’t let their environment (or their own mind) tell them what they should and shouldn’t do. Professionals do what has to be done.We also talk with Steven about his latest book A Man At Arms and why the ancient world of nobility and strength intrigued him so much. If you’ve seen any of Steven’s films, read any of Steven’s books, or just want to push through to success, you’ll love his take on writing, success, and failure. In This Episode We Cover:How to push past failure, regardless of the line of work you’re inOvercoming the “analysis” phase of any new venture or life dreamHow resistance plays a role in failure for many real estate investorsHow to fight resistance so you can push through to your goalsThe villain on the outside, and the villain within youAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets PodcastOpen Door CapitalBiggerPockets book storeBrandon's InstagramDavid's InstagramThe 90 Days ChallengeSteven's WebsiteClick here to check the full show notes: https://www.biggerpockets.com/show461
This week, I sit down with Steven Webb, host of the Stillness in the Storms podcast, a show that helps you find inner peace at difficult times. Each episode, Steven brings a different perspective and way of living life that eases your suffering. Being severely paralyzed is just a fraction of Steven’s mountain climb to find his inner peace. If Steven can sit with stillness, you can also. It’s the first time, really, that being paralyzed really creeped up.Steven talks about the moment that he hit rock bottom when he was forty. At that moment, it felt that his life had come to a grinding halt, and that he was going to be truly alone, and couldn’t see how his future was going to play out. The Dark Night of the SoulSteven talks about how, leading up to his darkest moment, he had been thinking about all the things that were going wrong in his life, and likened it to The Dark Night of the Soul, a poem by John of the Cross. I was creating everything that was terrible in the world, and I was the victim of everything. As Steven sank deeper into depression, he began drinking, and he shares how the embarrassment of needing to ask his carers to pour him a drink was a major turning point in getting his life back together. On Living in Invisible ShameOne of the things that Steven pushed back on in his early years was the belief by others that he was doing something amazing or inspiring. If he heard people say that, he’d run away. But then he realized it was pretty amazing when it came to what he’s done: Multiple charity challenges Organizing music festivals Running in politics and becoming the deputy mayor elect Steven talks about how it took him a long time to accept people were being genuine, and not just saying or doing something out of pity for his disability. I don’t look at it as incredible for being paralyzed to do that; it’s just incredible for me.Why It’s Important to ReflectIn one of the episodes on Steven’s podcast, he talks about the anniversary of his accident - not just to the year, but the exact day and time that it happened. In that episode, Steven recounts the moments of the day leading up to his accident. Steven does this every year, and as he mentions in our chat, he reflects more on that than he does his own birthday. He believes it’s because it was such an ordinary day like any other, until it wasn’t, that it remains so clear and so remembered. It was just an ordinary day; but we never know when it’s the last day we’ll do that ordinary thing. How His Difficult Childhood Served Him Well for What Lay AheadWhen Steven was a young child, his parents were divorced, and he, his sister, and his mum were left homeless. At the time, he thought it was a big adventure and something cool - after all, they eventually moved into a big house. It was only afterward that he learned it was a refuge for women. This knowledge of having nothing and losing everything helped shape an important mindset for what was to come. Those are the times that really decide who you’re going to be, and how you’re going to show up.Join us for an open chat about loss, adversity, affirmation, consistent persistence, and why losing everything isn’t the end of the world. Steven Walt, General Manager of Fabriik Markets describes the business as the digital assets service arm of the Bayesian-owned, Fabriik group. He highlights the company’s three major offerings - market making, liquidity provision and its OTC or over-the-counter desks.“The focus of the company is trading” Steven says. As he points out, digital asset prices change every second. To address the volatility, clients are provided a stable fixed price of up to 15 minutes. This would essentially allow payment processors the ability to provide their customers time to transact. “What we do is we use really outstanding algorithms ...to forecast volatility and fix the price of up to 15 minutes.”Steven was talking to Charles Miller on this week’s CoinGeek Conversations podcast. In addition to trading, Fabriik Markets is positioning itself to be a one-stop-shop for liquidity. Steven describes their liquidity plan as disruptive, stressing they will be the first in the space to temporarily absorb price risk.Furthermore, Fabriik Markets takes great pride in their OTC desks. Also referred to by the company as a ‘white glove service,’ this is where they assist their clients in the buying and selling of digital assets. This type of service will be made available to institutions and individuals that are looking to make trades of $100,000 US or more.Fabriik Markets’ OTC desks will have more to offer compared to others in the space, Steven explains. For instance, customers will be given more variations and approaches to execute an order.“Most desks out there, they quote a single price which is also what we do, but what we plan to do as well is offering additional ways of entering into and exiting out of a position.”Having worked in the traditional financial market, as well as the digital asset space, Steven notes, there are many similarities between the two industries.“I think ultimately where the digital assets is right now is maybe where traditional asset was 20-30 years ago, it’s very early days in my opinion.”In light of this, he believes a lot can be taken from the traditional assets space and applied to the digital assets space. One of them, is algorithm. At Fabriik, he says customers will be able to use some traditional algorithm but more catered toward the digital asset space. Ultimately, they want to build simple products that people understand.“What’s familiar is what works the best.”Charles and Steven also touched on other topics such as tokenization. This is where Bitcoin SV is believed to make an impact. As Steven explains, they see massive potential in the BSV blockchain when it comes to creating tokens.Fabriik Markets has committed to dealing with decentralized digital assets, such as BSV, BTC and BCH.“We believe there’s a lot of power that comes from the BSV ecosystem. The blockchain is extremely scalable. And we’ve chosen it, for example to support tokenization.”

Great conversationalist, knows his work, and just an all around friendly guy: our friends at Bloomerang really picked a winner when they enlisted Steven to be their chief engagement officer. Today we had a chance to check in with Steven as his new book, Robots Make Bad Fundraisers, is now on bookshelves everywhere. Steven is the right person to be tackling this subject; he works for one of the most-celebrated CRM companies in our space. It was encouraging to hear some of the trends that they are tracking which are very consistent with my own read on the sector and what we are hearing from our guests. Fundraisers are relying on the phone more often; their donors are picking it up when it rings, and these meaningful conversations are apparently paying off. As Steven noted, perhaps in the midst of Covid, fundraisers are strengthening some of the muscles that have been overlooked and ignored for quite some time. If you’d like to pick up a copy of Steven’s book, go ahead and click the link in the comments section. Responsive's recovery plan is now available for free download (https://lnkd.in/dyhvmPv). One of the most valuable life-hacks you can learn in sales, is the art of The Four Quadrants, a system you can use to prioritise your life, and which can help you to quickly recognise the parts of your life that need more, or less, attention. As Steven explains, by mastering this art, you can rapidly re-order your life and take complete control over your time management. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Four Quadrants we should be using to categorise each of our tasks in life are: Quadrant 1: The parts of your life that are not important and non-urgent Quadrant 2: The parts of your life that are urgent, but not important Quadrant 3: The parts of your life that are important, but not urgent Quadrant 4: The part of your life that are important and urgent While we may be inclined to focus purely upon quadrant 4, it is in fact quadrant 3 that we should be aiming for in general. By working on tasks in that order, we prevent tasks from slipping into quadrant 4. Less urgency means less stress. Stress only hampers your ability to operate effectively. Plan ahead and avoid that pressure! BEST MOMENTS 'Selling really is a way of life' ‘We're here for a very, very short time' ‘Failure to prepare is preparing to fail' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. Tune in, enjoy - it's Time to Get Your Khonshu On! BARE BONES: (courtesy of Rey) In a rundown church in the South Bronx, a lone woman drifts within, tortured by memories. She is Stained Glass Scarlet, and amongst the solitude, she contemplates her next move involving a recent prison escapee, Mad Dog Fasinera. As Steven and Marlene enjoy a cultured evening, their night is cut short by news on the radio of Mad Dog Fasinera in a shoot out with police. Moon Knight springs into action and it’s not long before he spots the gunfire from the Mooncoptor. Moon Knight manages to subdue the bank robbers, but Mad Dog manages to escape, killing one of his own men along the way. Having evaded Moon Knight’s grasp, Moon Knight decides to track down two of the other bank robbers who also managed to escape. They lead him to an abandoned store, but Moon Knight is surprised to see a Woman in Red appear, and enter the store as well. The robbers are also surprised that their secret safehouse is compromised and are stunned that the Woman in Red knows of it. Moon Knight intervenes and makes short work of the criminals, but is so intrigued by Stained Glass Scarlet – the Woman in Red – that he is compelled to follow. Moon Knight confronts her in the abandoned church and Stained Glass Scarlet tells of her origin – how she was a nun, before meeting a reformed criminal Vince Fasinera. How they married but Vince returned to his old ways, neglected his son and ultimately returning to a life of crime; how his last big bank job ends with his death and the mysterious disappearance of all the bank money; and finally, how Joe, left without a father, grows resentful and ultimately criminal, abandoning his mother. As Moon Knight reflects on this sad Tale, Joe ‘Mad Dog’ Fasinera appears, determined to retrieve his father’s hidden loot from Stained Glass Scarlet. She pleads to her son that she is all he needs, and Moon Knight valiantly attempts to diffuse the situation. Moon Knight is shot, but in the melee, Stained Glass Scarlet pulls a gun on her own son. Stained Glass Scarlet makes the hardest decision that a mother never should and is forced to kill her own son. In a final twist, as Mad Dog clutches at the bell rope, the bell sounds his death knell, but also reveals the hidden stash which had been hidden within the church bell for all these years. As you may have seen if you follow me on social media, this week I recorded a podcast with one of my idols and role models, Steven Pressfield. Steven has written over 20 books, one of his most famous, and my favorite of his, is The War of Art in which Steven talks about the battle against Resistance. As Steven is a writer, much of the way he communicates is through the lens of a creative but his strategies for fighting against resistance can be used in so many ways like exercise, forming better relationships, learning something new, partaking in personal development, dating, and on and on. Steven says that Resistance rears its head whenever we are attempting to ascend to a new level in our lives. Listen in to this podcast to hear me highlight two ways we can overcome resistance based on my conversation with Steven, and look for our podcast which is coming out next Monday! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jakeparker/support
An important note: do you feel that you need someone to talk with during all this craziness? Please feel free to give our Instagram, Twitter, or email a message. We’re happy to give you a friendly and caring ear. On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are biting our freshly washed nails in the monkey-biting Wolfgang Petersen film, Outbreak. Is the world bursting into flames around us? Nah, not really, but it got pretty dang close in this film. Outbreak was released in 1995 and has proven to be pretty prescient for these current times. What is always timeless, though, are Steven’s puns. The show opens with several and they don’t let up. We’re, uh, we’re not sorry about them. As Steven mentions, this movie is a good example of following protocol and also a fantastic example of people who really should listen to authority a whole lot more. As it can do, life imitates art. Speaking of, we’re a little upset with the general lack of sense in our real-life world when it comes to washing your hands and not hoarding the supplies that we all need. Seriously people, be cool! There are people in the world that need the toilet paper and soap more than the awful hoarders do. Shame on them. Shame! From its intense melodrama to the harrowing suspense of trying to save an entire city from a terrible end, Outbreak does a good job of drawing you in and keeping you on the edge of that seat you’re sitting on. It can be a tough film to watch when so much in the world seems uncertain, but if you’re up for it, you really can’t do any better. So fair warning about that and also about the significant Kevin Spacey presence in this one. We know… We know. Also, if Donald Sutherland suddenly shows up in your city wearing military fatigues, run. Run away as fast as you can. He’s going to try to blow up your city. "The gift is in the giving. And I will tell business people that when you give to a good cause...you give the gift in the giving." ~Steven Lazar Can surplus commodities become a driver for change? If you ask Steven Lazar, president of Lazco Corporation, the answer is a resounding “yes!”. We began our conversation discussing the business of buying and selling surplus HVAC equipment but quickly expanded our focus to include family dynamics, getting young people involved in entrepreneurship, and the importance of personal altruistic pursuits. “I think once we recognize the value of community, even in the heating and air conditioning industry, that we have to be able to help each other, you know, and do things.” But Steven isn’t satisfied with just unloading a client’s product for the best price - although that certainly is chief among his considerations when organizing a sale. What truly motivates him is the role he plays in his client’s future - be it the buyers who get good products at great prices or sellers who would otherwise take a hit on a warehouse full of unused goods. “This is why my passion, to help distributors and manufacturers turn their surplus inventories into working capital.” *** Distribution Talk is produced by The Distribution Team, a consulting services firm dedicated to helping wholesale distribution clients remove barriers to profitability, generate wealth and achieve personal goals. http://www.distributionteam.com This episode was edited & mixed by The Creative Impostor Studios. Ego often prevents sellers from accepting bids which have been coordinated with their best interests in mind. As Steven sees it, there’s no reason not to consider a 70-cents-on-a-dollar deal when it could mean the difference between moving on to greener pastures or standing still -- watching your equipment depreciate. “Logistically, it doesn’t make sense!” What does make sense is his ability to put sellers together with buyers and even renters. “This is perfectly good equipment that we can use to help save people money that don’t have a budget to buy.” Steven’s commitment to his customers is matched only by the concern he has for his community. Veterans affairs are close to his heart. To that end, he’s working to create his first subdivision of homes outfitted to serve veterans (and veteran families) in need. In partnership with Legacy Manufactured Homes, Steven hopes to open the first of these villages in Arizona in 2020. It’s a footprint that features 30 modular units of various-sized dwellings with additional onsite support for personal and professional growth through community gardening, job training, and social services. If all works as he envisions it will, the goal is to set up additional communities to repay those who have given so much to their country. “One of the important things is the attitude of gratitude,” Steven says. It’s this philosophy that he applies to his business and philanthropic endeavors. Listen in to find out more about how Lazco might be of service to your business or how you can get involved with his homes-for-veterans project.

Today I am talking about Setting goals for your social media. So many people don't understand why their social media efforts don't work for them and one of the reasons for this is that they use a scattergun approach and they just don't plan it, deliver it or evaluate it on a consistent basis. So the first thing you need to do is to Identify Your Goals. As Steven covey once said, ‘start with the end in mind'. So you need to think about what it is you want to achieve with your social media efforts and make sure that you plan your goals to be a SMART goal. ...

Engineer-to-Leader: Creating Your Successful Engineering Career
Welcome to the Episode #11 of the Engineer-to-Leader podcast series. In Episode #2 Steven talked about your career path. That information was based on the perspective of your overall career… that is, if you can make it happen in a relatively straight line. But the possibility of a straight line career is probably limited. As Steven has stated many times, your career will probably not be a straight line. In this podcast, Steven will discuss the future job market and career opportunities for engineers, scientists, and technologists in the light of coming technological changes and advancements. The future will more unlike the past than at any time in the last 50 years or perhaps the last 100 years. So what can you expect? What does the “crystal ball” say about where the opportunities will be and what will those opportunities actually demand of us? Whether you are a veteran engineer/individual contributor with 20 years of experience or a new graduate, the answer to the question "What will the next 10 or 20 years bring" is critical to your success? Please enjoy, like, share, and subscribe to the show for lots more to come!

This week on the Barbell Shrugged podcast we welcome Dr. Steven Platek, Neuroscience Professor, Crossfitter and gym owner, contributor to Power Athlete Radio, and current member of the NPGL’s Miami Surge. Yeah, he’s a busy guy. Those are impressive credentials, but I actually didn’t know any of it at the start of our interview. I just knew that Steven was a really sharp guy, and yes, he was strong as hell. Earlier that day at the Las Vegas NPGL Combine he absolutely destroyed the deadlift ladder, lifting close to 4,500 pounds in total in less than 60 seconds, and finishing with a lift of 585 pounds. Not bad for a Master’s level Crossfitter, right? Really, it’s amazing. It was no surprise that Miami took him when they had the chance. There’s a clear niche for Master’s level competitors within this new sport of Grid. No, Steven and most Master’s level athletes simply cannot get away with the super-high training volume that some of his teammates and competitors require in order to make progress. A huge priority has to be placed on recovery, any older competitor who wants to stay in the game and remain strong has to accept that. However, Steven’s vast experience translates to a very high level of skill, especially in strength movements like the deadlift. Other teams in the NPGL should take note, you should have a Master beast on your bench just in case things get really heavy. Loads of people struggle to make progress in the gym, especially as they age and become more experienced. They have a plan, they work as hard as they can, but at times nothing improves. It’s frustrating, but the answer might be as simple as training less and spending more time on recovery. Just like Steven, back off and consider leveraging your valuable experience instead. Train smarter and more optimally, and you’ll get a superior result. The same thing goes for the manner and mindset with which you lift the barbell. Many lifters assume that you have to be very intense to be very strong. I myself assumed that Steven’s coach had to have been screaming and pushing him from the sidelines during that aforementioned 585 pound deadlift, but actually the opposite was true. His coach’s function was actually to keep Steve more calm and focused as the barbell got heavier and heavier, maintaining an optimal balance between arousal and performance. As Steve explained, this was a classic real world example of theYerkes-Dodson law, which basically states that arousal is a great thing for performance, until there’s too much of it. If you are an athlete that’s interested in performing optimally, you need to know just how much arousal is necessary for you. Will a little do, or are you a 7-cup of coffee type of person? The very best athletes know just how far to push it, and just how to modulate their sympathetic nervous system response to stress. The result is more fight than flight, you could say. If you find yourself getting far too excited and anxious ahead of training or competition, take note. You are more than likely out of balance. If you can do a better job of controlling that sympathetic response - if you can settle your mind a bit - you’ll perform much better. If you find that you’re still a little sleepy and groggy after a few cups of coffee, well, maybe you’re Jon North! That guy really loves his stimulants. He also believes 100% in himself, and what he’s capable of lifting, and his purpose. As Steven will also tell you, the mind is unfathomably mysterious and powerful. Your very first step towards success, regardless of what you're training and living for, is to believe in what you’re doing. Call it the placebo effect, call it magic, it doesn’t matter at all. If you can believe 100% in what you’re doing then magical things will happen. Thanks for the reminder, Steve. You can see hear more from Steven over at Power Athlete Radio. You can also follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Cheers, Chris
As the third season of Doctor Who comes to a close, the TARDIS crew frees an enslaved civilization ("The Savages"), then they stop a supercomputer from destroying mankind ("The War Machines"). And when the dust settles, we're left with an entirely new set of companions. As Steven and Dodo make their exits, Polly and Ben find themselves unwillingly whisked away by The Doctor.
