Constellation, un thriller complexe sur AppleTV+

BetaSeries La Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 22, 2024

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, we've invited twenty million Zygons over for cocktails, and now we're starting to feel self-conscious about cooking up all that salt-and-pepper squid. And so soon we're involved in an international political thriller that takes us from Fake New Mexico all the way to Madeupistan. It's The Zygon Invasion. Notes and links Sister Lamont from Terror of the Zygons was played by Lillias Walker, who died in August at the age of 93. I hope she knew how many small children she terrified. Bless her. I thought I would probably regret researching this, but here's a link to the Scottish Falsetto Sockpuppet Theatre's YouTube playlist, and here's another link to a video where they announce the casting of Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor Who. (Brendan's impression of them is actually pretty good.) El Sandifer's interview with Peter Harness was broadcast on the Pex Lives podcast feed. You can find it here. Friend-of-the-podcast Erik Stadnik has just finished the RTD1 era on his podcast Doctor Who: The Writers' Room, in which he and Kyle discuss the various writers and eras throughout the show's history. In their most recent episode, they start their long journey through the Steven Moffat era with a discussion of The Eleventh Hour. Highly recommended. Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Richard is @RichardLStone, and Todd is @toddbeilby. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on X at @FTEpodcast. We're also on Facebook, Mastodon, and Bluesky, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll record a really smug and irritating voicemail greeting before going off on holiday for a few weeks. And more Yesterday, we released the first episode of our new Space: 1999 commentary podcast, Startling Barbara Bain. Space: 1999 was, at times, a thoughtful and beautifully realised British science fiction show that dealt with questions about the very nature of the universe, and at other times was mostly about astronauts trying not to get eaten by unconvincing monsters with rubber tentacles. Our first episode, Breakaway, sees the moon hurled from its orbit by a nuclear explosion and heading off into space for some thrilling new adventures. A couple of our podcasts are finished or on hiatus right now. Jodie into Terror was our flashcast on every episode of the Whittaker era, recorded just a couple of days after the broadcast of the episode. Bondfinger was our James Bond commentary podcast, which also covered some of our favourite spy-fi TV shows of the sixties and seventies. Maximum Power is back! Our podcast about Blakes 7, co-produced with the Trap One podcast, makaes a start on Blakes 7 series C, with a discussion of the first episode, Aftermath. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we were astounded to find ourselves enjoying a late-era episode of Star Trek: Enterprise in which the Vulcans go completely rogue — Kir'Shara.

We then take a deep dive on the morality of “The Zygon Invasion” and “The Zygon Inversion,” with Alasdair admitted he both wants Peter Harness to be the new showrunner and wants him to never write another episode, because it’s just too much trouble. We agree this is a great, ambitious story that’s messy in the way Doctor Who probably ought to be, but what precisely is this two-parter trying to say? All that and some more general praise for how great Peter Capaldi has been this year.

ZYGONS, ZYGONS EVERYWHERE!  Mutter's Spiral Podcast is back talking about "The Zygon Invasion", episode 7 of Series 9 of DOCTOR WHO (and, yes, part 1 of 2)!  It's a shorter podcast, since it's half of a very plot-heavy story from Peter Harness.  We don't talk plot much, as that's left to unravel in part 2, but we do talk about the political parallels between this story and "real life" as well as a lot of elements that did NOT work for me (Will) - I'm full of disdain.  John enjoyed the story more, but he was not comfortable with the political messages raining down upon the viewers, either.  We're both hoping that part 2 really brings the story home in a successful way, so we decided to wait until next week for a more full discussion of the story.  It's interesting listening (we hope), but it's not as positive and sunny as our usual podcasts.  Of course, there's also TRIVIA!

Following the events of The Day of the Doctor, a peace existed between Humans and Zygons, allowing 20 million of the aliens to live safely (but in hiding) among humanity, after their planet had been destroyed by the Time War. But the peace is now threatened, as a splinter group of radicalized Zygons plot their insurgency against humanity – and the only ones who can stop the nightmare scenario are the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Osgood (Ingrid Oliver). During TARDISblend 92, we’re joined by guest Chris McDavid akaHenchman21 and discuss the return of Ingrid Oliver as the lovable Osgood, as she appears in an episode that appears to be something of a sequel to The Day of the Doctor. We also look into the deeper political and social commentary integrated into the plot by writer Peter Harness, and how viewers and fans are reacting! Doctor Who. Al Nowatzki from ChildrenOfTheForce @ForceChildren sends us an MP3 where he sits down with his two kids, Anna and Liam, asking them, "Why do you like Star Wars?" 12:25 INTERVIEW – DOCTOR WHO – Andy @skaromedia talks to TV and film writer, Peter Harness, who not only wrote 'Kill the Moon' for Series 8 of Doctor Who and a currently unnamed episode for Series 9 (featuring the return of UNIT, Jemma Redgrave, Ingrid Oliver and the Zygons), but who also recently adapted Susanna Clarke's novel "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" into a television series of the same name. This interview ranges far and wide over his career. 41:16 FEATURE – STAR WARS/DOCTOR WHO – Kate @Kamiduu is on the show floor at Phoenix Comicon @PhoenixComicon and tells us what she's seen and what she is preparing for the next episode of the show, which will include interviews with Star Wars author Chuck Wendig @ChuckWendig ; Doctor Who TV and book writer Paul_Cornell @Paul_Cornell and Yoda voice artist, Tom Kane. As Steven dips further into cricket insanity, a factor leading to his inevitable emigration to India could be the fact that Doctor Who will soon start broadcasting there for the first time. How can he possibly resist? Or perhaps a trip to New York to see the Symphonic Spectacular in October? One thing we can all agree on is that you should all journey between the pages of You and Who: Contact Has Been Made Volume Two, which contains writing from both Steven and Warren! And, and AND! The beauty of Doctor Who is that it can be any story, anywhere and anywhen…and yet inexplicably there’s never really been a heist episode. Well, no longer! “Time Heist,” by writer Steve Thompson of “Curse of the Black Spot” and “Journey to the Center of the TARDIS" (ahem) fame. Did this story surpass his previous attempts?
