Another episode touching on aspects not featured in past episodes. Today playwright Anna Ouyang Moench sits in the Playwright's Spotlight and, thankfully, after botching her name twice, she was nice enough to stick around. In this interview, we discuss the benefits of writers groups, the pursuit of playwriting, and developing a play during rehearsal through a nontraditional writing approach. We also discuss the techniques of structure, working under time constraints and the the practicality and theatricality of producing, transferring from larger markets to smaller markets as well as building your network as you grow. We also talk about how playwriting helps in the arena of film and television, how to take notes and receive feedback and being mindful when receiving it, how to juggle life's responsibilities and finding discipline while writing, the mechanisms of a play, playing with the structure of timeline as well as obtaining theatrical and literary representation and so much more. Certainly a learning experience on my end which I hope you enjoy. Anna Ouyang Moench is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter. Her plays have been produced across the country and include Mothers, Birds of North America, and Sin Eaters. She has been supported by fellowships and residencies from The Playwrights Realm, New York Foundation of the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, the Van Lier Foundation, Yaddo, the Tofte Lake Center, the Sewanee Writers Conference, and the Last Frontier Theatre Conference. We recorded this episode mere days before the Will's birthday, and so it was up to Will to pick the stories. So he satisfied his curiosity about the story where Scarecrow kills his dean, adds in some more Moench and Jones and closes a narrative loop for the podcast. The results for the Big Board are... Not only do we talk about all of her training in crazy detail, we also chat about diet and weight in potentially the most meaningful way we ever have on an episode. He meets and hooks up with Brother Voodoo there, who has reason to believe the terorists are tied to an outbreak of zuvembies he's been fighting. Moon Knight eventually finds out the governor who hired him was also the terrorists' leader and just wanted to throw off suspicion while he arranged a coup from within the government. He also reveals himself as Grand Bois, commander of the zuvembies. Moon Knight and Brother Voodoo work together to break the corpses' link with the evil Loa animating them, which in turn loses Grand Bois the loyalty of his living soldiers, whose dead ancestors he had been holding in his thrall. With the villain defeated, Moon Knight agrees to return his payment, which was illegally taken from the Haitian treasury. MOON RATING : Rey:

In the final interview for USUK for the foreseeable future Tom speaks to our good friend Shelley Moench-Kelly (see her previous interview based on "Here's Your Pill Kitten") The world is changing, quickly too and we have to work hard to keep up. Shelley talks to Tom about her new book Lift which was co-authored by Shelley, Faisal Hoque and Jeff Wuorio. Lift was a New York Times bestseller because it hits a home run when it comes to adapting to life as we know it now and coming out on top. In this episode: There is a longstanding belief that living and maybe training at altitude confers benefits on performance especially when an athlete goes to compete at a lower level. The science on this matter is a little less certain. Yes, there are physiological adaptations that occur but do these actually translate in to better results? I review the evidence. Plus, an interview with Skye Moench: Skye is a professional triathlete who specializes in long-course triathlon. She is a multiple Ironman and 70.3 Champion. In 2021, Skye ended the year ranked 7th in the PTO World Rankings. When central bank policies are driven by their primary mandates, is there a case that these mandates should expand to incorporate the systemic risk that is climate change? And how will increasingly extreme climate events force policymakers' actions or limit the monetary policy space available to central bank institutions? Emanuel Moench, Head of Research at the Deutsche Bundesbank, joins Jason Mitchell to discuss the intersection of climate change and monetary policy; what central banks are doing to integrate climate risk in their macroeconomic models; and why it's vital we continue to examine how climate change could impact the financial system. Read the full transcript of the episode here. Biography Commissioner Emanuel Moench is the Head of Research at Deutsche Bundesbank, Professor of Economics at Goethe University Frankfurt and co-chair of the recent ECB Strategy Review Occasional Paper: Climate change and monetary policy in the euro area. Prior to joining the Bundesbank, Emanuel was a Research Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and comic super-fan Eric Breen to review Batman: First Appearance of Jason Todd Robin and discuss the career of Roy Thomas. Batman writer Doug Moench doesn't get nearly the love he deserves. Unfortunately, during his Batman run DC Comics were overshadowed by Marvel Comics greatest era. Moench superbly weaves the story of Jason Todd becoming the new Robin through Detective Comics #532-#535 and batman #366-#368. It's an era and moment not often explored but most comic book readers are going to find a fantastic version of Batman as he finally accepts Jason as his new Robin (00:00) Roy Thomas is sometimes downplayed as a Stan Lee disciple. Thomas certainly had an enormous respect or even reverence for Stan Lee but was his own comic book creator and Editor-in-Chief. He's not only the most prolific Conan comic book writer ever but he pushed for Marvel to publish the first Star Wars comics before the movie debuted. He's wrote and edited essentially every character and series of consequence during his time as Marvel Comics. Some may call him “House Roy” but that downplays the risk taker and comic book visionary Roy Thomas is. (57:10) Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Endurance News: No, Running Doesn't Wear Down Your Cartilage. It Strengthens Your Joints. Numerous studies have shown that, contrary to what your sedentary friends may sometimes argue, running does not cause arthritis. New research shows, in fact, that running may actually help strengthen your joints against future wear and tear, says Jean-Francois Esculier, leader of research and development for The Running Clinic (headquartered near Montreal, Canada) and a medical professor at the University of British Columbia. In a Sept. 3 paper in Sports Medicine, Esculier's team examined 43 studies that had used MRI to measure the effect of running on cartilage. One major finding of these studies, he says, was that the impact from running squeezes water out of cartilage and into the underlying bone. That means that an MRI taken immediately after running will show a decrease in cartilage thickness. So, Esculier says, “If you want to say running is bad, you can show a study that shows it reduces the thickness of the cartilage.” But the effect is transient and harmless, he says, because the moment you finish your run, the cartilage begins to reabsorb water and expand back to normal. “It only takes an hour,” he says. In fact, he says, running may actually be beneficial. Historically, Esculier says, doctors, researchers, and runners were taught that cartilage simply is what it is, and won't respond to training. “But we now know that cartilage can adapt,” he says. “Even with novice runners, after only 10 weeks, you see changes in cartilage so that it can actually tolerate more load.” What's happening, he says, is a side-effect of having fluid squeezed out of the cartilage into the underlying bone. When it comes back, he says, it brings with it nutrients that feed the cartilage and make it stronger. “So not only is running not bad for your joints, it's actually good for your joints,” he says. It isn't just beginners whose joints can strengthen with use. Studies of more experienced runners, he says, suggest that they have developed cartilage that is more resistant to the type of impacts seen in running than that of non-runners. One of the more dramatic studies looked at competitors in the TransEurope FootRace, a 4,486-kilometer mountain run (2,787 miles) that went from Sicily to northern Scandinavia in 64 days. A team of scientists followed the runners, using a portable MRI to assess them every 900 kilometers or so. Amazingly, Esculier says, they found not only that the competitors didn't have cartilage damage, but that their cartilage adapted during the race. About Bill's friend London Marathon - Raphael Pacheco Deb Connelly - Monday Running What's New in the 303: Small Town America at the Heart of Gravel Racing? The Rad Dirt in Trinidad Shows Us Why Posted on October 5, 2021 By Becky Furuta If the heart of gravel racing is the wild west of cycling – where the rules are few and weirdness is welcomed instead of scrutinized – small town America is its soul. The lure of gravel racing is in the long, off-road adventure. It's tricky trails and hellacious hills and mud so thick it's like riding through peanut butter and rolling roads with expansive views. It's dust and limestone chunks and pea gravel that bury your tires like quicksand. Due in part to its grassroots heritage, gravel remains the antidote to the technology-driven, aggressive and often super-competitive mentality of road cycling. Most of today's gravel grinders began as small-scale events, and often with no entry fees. Despite their growth, they're dripping with the same low-key attitude that attracted participants in the first place. Small towns and gravel are perfectly paired. A convergence of factors have fueled gravel's popularity, but all speak to quiet country roads with little traffic and natural scenery. The character of these towns shape the events and the way they unfold. Trinidad, Colorado is no exception. And the quirky town on the New Mexico border may well become one of gravel's new hotspots. The small city of 9000 residents was founded in 1862 after rich coal seams were discovered in the region. By 1910, Trinidad was a company town. Colorado Fuel and Iron operated the largest steel mills in the West, and dozens of mines, coke ovens and transportation lines cropped up to support local industry. CF&I created small communities for the workers they recruited to come from Europe, believing they were less likely to try and organize. To the contrary, this led to one of the darkest chapters in American labor history. Just a few miles north of Trinidad in the Spring of 1914, Union organizer Louis Tikas and 20 others were killed in a violent company crackdown known as the Ludlow Massacre. It was a bloody insurrection that occurred in protest of brutal working conditions. Three of the victims – a woman and her two children – suffocated in the dirt pit where they were hiding. By the 1920s, the coal industry was fading but Trinidad found a new, strange prosperity when mobster Al Capone and his family took the town during prohibition. They were able to easily blend in with local Italian families who continued to call the city home. Lavish hotels, a Carnegie library, an Opera House and the oldest synagogue in the state of Colorado cropped up in what would be called “the Victorian jewel of Southern Colorado.” Just having dirt alone isn't enough to make Trinidad a gravel success story. Part of an event's draw is the community itself, and how well they embrace the cyclists who come to visit. It's about the community and the culture, the adventure and the Instagram images of rolling hills and farmland. It's about getting people to drive hours in search of something different. Trinidad seems to understand all of that. City Council members greeted riders at the start and the finish. Restaurants enthusiastically marketed to gravel tourists. (Just ask me about the singing waiters at Rino Italian Restaurant downtown.) The route featured unique terrain you won't find at other gravel events. Only time will tell if Trinidad's next identity is built around bikes and outdoor tourism, but judging by the reactions of participants in The Rad Dirt Fest, it's right on track. Trinidad, like so many other rural communities, may well become a town transformed by bikes. Video Of The Week: Ironman Chattanooga 2021 Highlights Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. On this week's episode, I sit down with one of my favorite female pro triathletes, Skye Moench to talk about failure. I wanted to talk to Skye about this topic because I believe that the way in which she approaches failure within her training and racing has lended to her incredible success. On top of her long list of successes is her podium finish, 2:56 marathon PR, and top American finish at IM Tulsa!Spoiler alert: she doesn't really believe in failure. And because of this she makes progress faster: building herself up, instead of beating herself up.Follow Skye's training and racing journey through her social channels:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/skyemoench/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/skye.moenchYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDdVLyy31TzDzORfUJ_IOeAJoin my email list and get the 10 Truths Your Tri Coach Hasn't Told You here: https://www.vanessafayefoerster.com/get-the-10-truthsIf you have questions for me, feel free to send me an email at vanessa@vanessafayefoerster.com and follow me on social @vanessafayefoerster
Welcome to the Peak Performance Podcast I'm your host Dr. Marc Dupuis on this show we discuss tips, tools and strategies for optimizing athletic performance, overall health & wellness! Today I'm stoked to bring you this interview with one of America's top professional triathletes, Skye Moench! Skye Moench is the 2019 European Ironman Champion, Boulder 70.3 Champion, and was recently ranked 10th in the world by the Professional Triathletes Organization. As a friend and infrequent training tagalong, I am confident Skye is ascending to the top of long-distance triathlon racing. Near the end of the season of her life, Skye had a freak accident on her bike--a crash that would have ended the career for anyone less motivated. As she watched the Ironman World Championships from a hospital bed, bruised and broken, Skye put that emotion into a deep reservoir for later use--and we've only begun to see what she's going to do with it. As her custom kit reads: “DON'T STOP ME NOW,” Skye embodies the things I like the most about triathlon; dedication and hard work. In this conversation we unpack simple concepts that are hard to implement: How intrinsic motivation before external feedback helped create and Ironman Champion The power of a person's surroundings as it relates to performance. The positive impact of discipline and drive when applied daily The future of triathlon as a sport--and why kindness is more important than flashy gear. The performance-enhancing effect of a coach you trust. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. If you like this podcast be sure to rate and subscribe!
