Podcast Notes: Women's Running Collective – “What We Wish We Knew Before We Started Running” Welcome to another episode of the Women's Running Collective podcast! In today's episode, we'll dive into the lessons we've learned from running and what we wish we knew when we started. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, these insights might just resonate with you! Key Topics: How Much We Needed to Learn When we first started running, we didn't realize just how much there was to learn—about training, techniques, pacing, and how to listen to our bodies. The journey of running is not just physical; it's a steep learning curve that teaches us resilience, adaptability, and patience. The Community and Friendship Factor One of the biggest surprises was how running connected us with so many amazing people. From joining running groups to making lifelong friends on training runs, we discovered that running is more than just a sport—it's a community. The True Cost of Running We underestimated how much running can cost, not just in terms of gear, but with entry fees for races, travel, and accessories. It's easy to spend money on new shoes, clothing, and other running essentials, so budgeting for running can be important if you're serious about the sport. Running Doesn't Have to Hurt One of the biggest misconceptions we had was that running should always be painful or uncomfortable. But with proper form, appropriate pacing, and a focus on injury prevention, running can actually be enjoyable and pain-free. Running is Addictive Once you start seeing progress, running has a way of becoming addictive. The high from a runner's rush, the sense of accomplishment after a long run, and the challenge of hitting new goals can all become irresistible. It's Never Too Late to Start Running For those thinking it's too late to pick up running, know this: it's never too late! Starting running at any age comes with its own set of challenges, but it's never too late to begin, set goals, and enjoy the benefits. The Importance of Rest and Recovery One lesson we learned the hard way is how crucial rest and recovery are. Overtraining can lead to injuries and burnout. Prioritizing rest, foam rolling, stretching, and sleep is as important as the training itself. How Much Your Fuel Intake Increases Running long distances requires fueling the body properly. We quickly realized that the more we ran, the more we needed to pay attention to our nutrition and hydration. Keeping up your energy and aiding recovery is key to running well and staying healthy. Success Doesn't Come Overnight Whether it's hitting a new PR, completing a race, or simply making running a regular habit, success takes time. Progress is a gradual process, and consistency is everything. The key is to trust the process and celebrate small wins along the way. Recommendations: Jussie's Pick: Archies Footwear – These super-comfy, supportive sandals are perfect for recovery days and keeping your feet happy after long runs. Check them out here. Hayley's Pick: One Running – A brand that understands runners' needs with their high-quality gear. Visit their site for great running apparel and essentials: One Running. Karmen's Pick: Quad Lock Phone Case – For those who love to listen to music or track their runs, this secure phone case is a must-have. Check out the best way to carry your phone while running: Quad Lock. Final Thoughts: Running is a journey that comes with ups and downs, but it's also filled with triumphs and moments of joy. Remember to be kind to yourself, celebrate every milestone, and stay connected to the community that supports you. Thanks for joining us for this episode of the Women's Running Collective podcast. Happy running! xo Hayles, Jussie and Karmen

Alternatives considered were - apps which can be used in boats; Lowering the cost to membership of tracking simple measures like time, split and stroke rate. 04:15 A mount for the phone I used a Quad Lock mount phone case which includes the female mount. It came with three different lengths of velcro. I loop this around the wing rigger or the footstretcher in any boat. The Quad Lock I bought was a version for an arm band velcro strap - which is very long. 07:15 Different mounting solutions 3D printed mount that goes over a wing rigger. Has an NK mount on one end. The silhouette of the profile of the curve for the mount is unique to each wing rigger design. It isn't a very snug fit because you need flex to get it on and off the wing rigger. The second one has a curve which allows a water bottle to sit on the far side of the rigger. This version has a Quad Lock mount instead of the NK mount. Thirdly a footstretcher metal bracket which slots into the saw tooth adjustment for your foot stretcher adjustment. It tightens with a screw knob and I chose a Quad Lock mount. 11:00 Rowing Mindset Webinar with Jack Burns - teaching how to train your mind to balance the body training you do. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, we discuss the Quad Lock motorcycle cell phone holder. We bought one to see what they are all about. It's been flooding our social media advertising and we're sure it's been flooding yours. What is it all about and how does it stack up against the Biker Gripper? We here at Law Abiding Biker Media are always open to examining and reviewing rivals to the Biker Gripper cell phone motorcycle mount system. To date, we have not found any other mount system that comes close to the strength, looks, build, quality, and functionality of the Biker Gripper. So, after Quad Lock was spending loads of advertising dollars to push their motorcycle cell phone mount in front of us in our social media feeds, we bought one to handle and test it. Does the Quad Lock stack up to the world's best motorcycle cell phone mount, the Biker Gripper? SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE We did some research and found that the Quad Lock was actually a Kickstarter campaign back in 2011 backed by a couple of bicyclists out of Australia. The Quad Lock was originally designed for a bicycle environment, not a motorcycle environment. It was sold to bicyclists and at some point, the company wanted to expand its market and decided to try to market it to motorcyclists. However, Quad Locks' motorcycle mount system has had serious vibration issues over the years, damaging smartphone cameras internally. And so, they've had to try to appease the angry motorcyclists with adaptations, by making a separate part called a vibration dampener that you can purchase for an additional $20. Now, it seems clear that Quad Lock knew there was a problem with vibrations in their mount system for motorcycles. However, instead of including that part for motorcycle kits, they'll charge you for it. Unless of course, you want to damage your smartphone camera internally. It's also worth noting that all Quad Lock products are made in Chinese Factories. To be fair, the Quad Lock system and cases seem to be of good quality. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! In contrast, the Biker Gripper motorcycle cell phone mount is produced and sold by a company of actual motorcyclists (bikers) and it was designed from the ground up for a motorcycle environment. That's why it has no vibration issues and does not damage smartphone cameras internally. The reason the Biker Gripper does not have vibration issues is that the gripper arms on the head move independently to absorb shaking and vibration. And, the rubber pad in the base with our logo on it actually provides grip and isolation from high-frequency vibration. Our logo, however badass it is, is a functional component of the gripper head. Also, the ball head system on the Biker Gripper has some give, unlike the rigid mounting system of the Quad Lock. Again, the Biker Gripper was made for motorcycles from the ground up. And, to our knowledge, the Biker Gripper is the only motorcycle mount system manufactured in the USA and not in China. After spending time with the Quad Lock, I can tell you that it's a finicky system, but you do get a bit smoother with it after practicing. You see, it's a four-tab lock system on the mount and you have to blindly align those four tabs up with the tab cutouts on the case. Once you do that, you then turn it a 1/4 turn to lock the tabs in. Trust me when I say, you'll definitely miss the tab alignment at times, which is a bit frustrating. NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: What's The BEST MOTORCYCLE CELL PHONE MOUNT? Quad Lock Vs. Biker Gripper-THE WINNER IS? USA Made! In contrast, the Biker Gripper cell phone motorcycle mount has no intricate locking system and is not finicky at all. Yup, easily pull one side or the other on the Biker Gripper head, push your smartphone in, and let the arm go. It comes out just as easy and in literally one second. It's so easy, you can even do it with bulky riding gloves on! It was designed for motorcyclists and that environment. Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Better still, it has entered the vernacular with many people no longer mounting their phones, but rather ‘Quad Locking' their phones. Today Rob takes us on the journey of how he started Quad Lock with his Co-founder Chris. It's a brilliant story given they have been completely bootstrapped and have scaled responsibly - I really enjoyed hearing Rob's approach to scale. You wouldn't believe it starts with a novelty bottle opener. We also discuss how they approach Quad Lock rip offs, the beauty of having limited SKU's and why they are focusing on a direct to consumer model to serve their customers better. Endurance News: Challenge Miami Results No Finishers at 2022 Barkley Marathons Barkley wins again. For the fifth year in a row, no one could best the infamously rugged course in trail's quirkiest event. For the fifth year in a row, there were no finishers at the infamous Barkley Marathons. An incredibly deep field was lined up to face the beast. This included a mix of Barkley veterans like Courtney Dauwalter, and 2017 and 15th-person ever Barkley finisher John Kelly and strong Barkley virgins like Big's Backyard record holder Harvey Lewis, 2017 Big's champion Guillaume Calmettes, and Appalachian Trail FKT holder and Belgian dentist Karel Sabbe. Other runners like Amelia Boone, Gary Robbins, and Johan Steene were originally slated for the 2022 race, but dropped out due to injuries, moving on, and testing positive at the airport, respectively. The 2022 edition was particularly heavy on international runners after the cancellation of the 2020 edition and pandemic-related travel restrictions for the 2021 race. For the 2022 race, Barkley creator Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell threw one of the biggest curveballs in race history, holding the event three weeks ahead of when it normally runs around April 1. Additionally, he held the race in the middle of the week with the race starting on Tuesday, March 8. There were concerns that the earlier time slot could create more difficult weather challenges, but when the conch was blown at 5:54 a.m. on Tuesday, relatively average Barkley conditions awaited. The race started cold but warmed up a lot during the day. Runners seemed to favor this, with a total of 30 out of 38 runners completing the first loop and starting a second. This was a Barkley record. However, when night fell on day one, so did freezing rain. This was reminiscent of the 2019 race when rain took out most of the field overnight. As a result, only five were able to start a Fun Run loop, which is three loops. This group included Sabbe, Kelly, British runner Jasmin Paris, New Zealander Greig Hamilton, and Danish runner Thomas Dunkerbeck. Paris is the first woman in a decade to complete a Fun Run. Of these five, Sabbe, Kelly, and Hamilton were able to finish three loops with time to start the fourth loop. Sabbe came in first from loop three in 32:21:49 and left just under 20 minutes later. Hamilton returned to camp in 34:20:39 and left for loop four with daylight 34 minutes later. Chris Froome says data has made pro cycling more competitive and more dangerous Chris Froome believes the depth and breadth of data in professional cycling has raised the bar in terms of the overall standard of performance but also made the sport more dangerous. The four-time Tour de France winner started his career back in 2008 and is now in his 15th season as a professional. In that time, he says the sport has changed beyond recognition. "Across the board we've seen a huge raise of the bar in terms of the general level of performance in professional cycling," Froome said in a sponsor video for Quad Lock. The main driver of that change has been, according to Froome, the rise of power meters, which measure the force being pushed through the pedals and can help riders judge their efforts. Whereas riders in the past may have raced or trained on feel, Froome noted that performances are now more dictated by numbers. Froome himself was known in his pomp for carefully measuring his efforts and not being afraid to drop briefly rather than risk going into the red, but he claimed that even in the last few years, the advances in power and other performance-related data have changed the game for professional cyclists generally. "There are quite a few different technologies that have played a massive part in shaping the sport in this last 10 to 15 years. First and foremost, the amount of data available through power meters and the collection and correlation of all that data means that performances now are lot more guided," Froome said. "In the past, power meters been a round for a while but no one really understood how to train with them or what the data really meant. Now we've just got so much data, from the guys who are winning the biggest races in the world, and that data helps forms the basis of all the training plans and all the preparations that lead to racing. “Everyone has structured training now. Very seldom do you come across someone who just gets on their bike and rides. Everyone's got a plan, a coach, a structure to follow, which has been a big change compared to 15 years a go.” Dangers As well as making the sport more competitive, Froome also pointed out a drawback to the datafication of professional cycling. Having recently held forth on safety issues relating to time trial bikes and gravel roads, the 36-year-old suggested that new technology is making the sport more dangerous. Froome referred chiefly to modern mapping technology in making the point that every rider knows exactly what to expect from the route of any given race. Directors can study race roads in minute detail, and they feed that information to the riders in real time. "We've just got this abundance of data coming through to us about conditions for the road coming up, so everyone knows what to expect and you get this huge fight for position," Froome said. "It's mental. Someone says to you, ‘right guys, you're going through this really narrow dangerous little village coming up, the road's really tiny and there's small bridge with a corner straight after', and we actually go faster, because you want to be the ones to get there first. If you're at the back, you're going to be stuck in this backlog trying to get through the pinch point. It's probably the only sport where someone tells you there's danger up ahead and the pace lifts. It's mental. “I think racing has, as a result of that, become more dangerous. Through having more data it's basically made the race more dangerous. Previously we wouldn't have known necessarily that each pinch point was there and there wouldn't have been this massive scurry for position. We'd have just got there and all been more relaxed and got through it with no issues. But that's changed quite a bit.” Froome has yet to race in 2022 after suffering a knee injury over the winter, but is back in full training and expecting to make his season debut this month. Katie Zaferes (Cary, N.C.) was named the Women's Olympic/World Triathlon Triathlete of the Year for the fourth time, and Kevin McDowell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned his first-ever Men's Olympic/World Triathlon Triathlete of the Year honors. Kendall Gretsch (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Brad Snyder (Baltimore, Md.), along with his guide Greg Billington (Poway, Calif.), were named 2021 Elite Paratriathletes of the Year Zaferes, 32, won bronze at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, becoming the third U.S. woman to win an Olympic medal, joining Gwen Jorgensen (gold, 2016 Rio) and Susan Williams (bronze, 2004 Athens). Zaferes then led off Team USA as the first leg in the Olympic debut of the Mixed Relay event, helping the team earn silver, and her second Olympic medal in Tokyo. Zaferes capped her season on the draft-legal World Triathlon Championship Series circuit by placing fourth at the World Triathlon Championship Finals. She also finished third overall in the Super League Triathlon Championship Series. “I am very honored to receive this award considering how many of the USA women had great achievements last year,” Zaferes said. “It's extra special for me because this year was so challenging. I'm proud of being able to regroup and refocus with the assistance of the team of people that surrounds me in order to achieve one of my biggest goals, which was to win a medal at the Olympics.” McDowell, 29, made his Olympic debut in Tokyo and showed his Mixed Relay prowess as Team USA's second leg in the race that features four athletes (two male, two female) who each complete a super-sprint triathlon in the order of female-male-female-male. He recorded the fastest split of the U.S. team that earned the silver medal. In the men's individual race, McDowell placed sixth, the highest-ever finish for a U.S. male triathlete at the Olympic Games. “It's a huge honor to receive this award after so many great performances on the U.S. men's side, which has been really exciting. This wouldn't have been possible without the entire team behind me, my family, coach Nate Wilson, physio/medical, friends, community, and USA Triathlon,” McDowell said. “It truly takes a village to do what we do and perform at the highest level. I'm thankful for the one I've got.” Video of the Week CLASH Endurance Miami 2022: Finish Line Interviews Upcoming Guests 3/25: A'nna Sewall of Athlete Blood Test and Jordan Jones of Powder7 Andy Potts and Daniel Brienza of APRacing Chris Schwenk about cycling and Zwift and his intimate knowledge of it and I think it would fun to share his love of indoor cycling, but also outdoors and his upcoming trip across the US. A couple weeks ago Nickel Potter and a 100 or so other cyclists were participating in the Rule of Three in NW Arkansas. They had just turned onto a remote gravel road in the Ozarks when a lady in a Dodge Ram came up behind them and when the cyclist got over to the side of the road she gunned it around them, losing control, and ultimately rolling her truck. After checking to make sure she was okay Nickel did the next logical thing which was to take a picture and post it on instagram. When I saw the image originally I laughed and shared it to my stories and spent the next couple of days seeing it re-shared within the cycling community. Then I was on Reddit and his image was posted on several different subs with thousands of likes and comments and there were link to news articles as well. Thats when I realized the true impact of this picture. It broke out of the cycling community and found itself floating all over the internet which stirred up a long of conversations, most that I read were mostly positive towards the cyclist which was a nice surprise. So today, we talk to the guy who took that iconic picture, hear his side, and chat about our rolls as cyclist when we are out on the roads and representing the community as a whole. Four days ago Brett Stepanik became the first person to complete the Doom Loop with a time of 3d 12h 9m. Doom is the brainchild of Andrew Onermaa, it's located in the Ozark National Forest it's 376 miles with 41,375 ft of climbing and almost all gravel. Andrew joins us at the top of this episode to share his thoughts on Doom before Brett hops on the mic. Brett is no stranger to bikepacking and ultra endurance efforts. He first got into bikepacking in 2012 and his most notable accomplishment is becoming the Single Speed Triple Crown Champion (TDR, CTR, AZT). At this past Arkansas High Country he set a new SS FKT and finished 4th overall. Something about Arkansas got under his skin and Ozark Gravel Doom was a perfect excuse to come back to Arkansas. It's by happenstance that Brett and I were able to meet up. I had coincidentally reached out to him about being a guest on the podcast at the same time he was scheming up this FKT, the stars aligned and we were able to meet up after he finished his race. Brett faced challenging conditions, namely freezing cold temps and lots of water crossings, making his effort even more impressive. Brett wanted to start the year off right and I'd say he accomplished that! Now what will he do the rest of the year? I'll be watching. Episode Sponsors These episodes aren't possible without support! What do you look for when investing in eCommerce startups? What have you learnt from the big names you've been involved with, like Kate Morris from Adore Beauty and Ed McManus from Deliveroo? This episode was brought to you by… Shopify PlusThink Shopify Plus if just for ‘simple retailers'? Well let me tell you - JB Hi Fi is no simple business. But when their old site crashed for two hours during Black Friday, doing nothing was simply not an option. Shopify Plus was selected as the eCommerce partner to help facilitate the fast growing $5b retailer. However, with over 200 dispatch locations, a reliance on a web of API's and the ability to handle tripling growth - it wasn't an out of the box implementation. But the results spoke for themselves. JB Hi-Fi cruised through a record Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2019 without a hitch, have reduced average page load time by 15% and were even able to redeploy three techies whose job was to watch the servers to make sure they don't go down! JB Hi FI - not just smashing prices but smashing eCommerce. Definitely not. Cocktail giftining company, Cheers Sweetie, were finding that they were regularly coming up against broken items when mailing their gift boxes all over Australia. Not only was iot costing them money but it was a horrible customer experience. Working with our packaging supplier partners, Signet, Cheers Sweetie added an outer protective layer and internal cushioning - all while remaining environmentally friendly. They are now saving over $6,000 a year in broken items. Cheers to that. Visit signet.net.au/blog to find out more. This week I had an opportunity to catch up with Neil Beltchenko, who raced the 2021 CTR under the pseudonym Ned Bachanko. Neil is no stranger to ultra endurance racing, he's been pushing his limits on the most demanding routes since 2013. In 2014 he and his wife Lindsay started Bikepacker Mag which was an online publication about bikepacking, routes, and gear. In 2017 Bikepacking.com absorbed Bikepacker Mag and Neil. You will now find Neil creating some amazing content for Bikepacking.com's YouTube channel, which I highly recommend. Whether on the bike or behind the camera Neil is always moving the sport of bikepacking forward and we are lucky to have him in our community. Neil and Lindsay, also put on the Bikepacking Summit, which is where I met them in 2019. I can tell you, they know how to throw one helluva bikepacking party. We talked about the future of the Summit on the podcast, but you'll have to listen to find out

Rob Ward always seems to be one step ahead. Before Kickstarter took off, Ward and his co-founder Chris Peters launched two successful campaigns on the platform, funding Opena and Quad Lock—the two products that led to the founding of Annex Products. Then Ward was early to the Shopify game, which he successfully used to sell his products for several years. Ward was also quick to see the potential of Facebook Ads and has used them to scale Annex to a multimillion-dollar business. This ability to spot trends, paired with his finely-tuned approach to product development, has helped Ward find tremendous success as an entrepreneur. While Opena is no longer active, Quad Lock has become a leading device mount and accessory company, serving a wide variety of users—car commuters, motorcyclists, kayakers, even hang gliders. As a result, Quad Lock sells hundreds of thousands of units each year in over 100 countries. We’re now thrilled to have Rob Ward as one of the five instructors of our latest online course, Ecommerce Masters, teaching advanced ecommerce strategies. If you’re curious to learn more about Ward’s approach to trendspotting, product development, and more, we highly recommend you check out this episode!
