We're talking about their feelings.   Squishy right?   Patients walk into your practice each day with two things: feelings and needs. Typically, the Doctor is amazing at meeting the patient's physical needs. However, feelings are just as important.   Consider how the patient felt when they waited on hold to make an appointment after navigating an overly complicated phone tree. How did they feel when no one remembered their name when they checked in? How did they feel when the clipboard of forms was given to them again? Or, how did they feel when they were escorted to the exam room, the door closed, and they were left alone with no ETA about when the Doctor would arrive? And how did they feel when your team helped them check out and didn't explain the bill?   Every patient will leave with a feeling about you and your practice. In today's rushed and impersonal healthcare environment, patients' feelings and subsequent actions and reactions are born from their experiences. Think about your last five online reviews. When the patient spent 27 minutes waiting in an empty seating area with no updates from the personnel who sat just ten feet away, gossiping about their coworkers and making endless phone calls, how does that make them feel? When the doctor kept forgetting their name, how did that experience make them feel?   Patients are burning out. I know this because I am a Patient. We all are. We're feeling unwelcomed, disrespected, rushed, ignored, and undervalued. Most medical office leaders would blame it on bureaucracy, insurance hassles, and busyness and cross their arms, ignore the awkward feelings patients get, and move on with their day. Few are willing to try something different and make the patient feel like they're at home here.   Fortunately, even science backs us up on this. According to Harvard professor Gerald Zaltman, “95% of purchase decision-making takes place in the subconscious mind”. So, in essence, our emotions drive purchasing behavior and our decision-making 95% of the time. This means that if you and your medical office team are not habitually paying attention to a patient's feelings throughout the entire journey, from start to finish, patients will go elsewhere. Chances are they'll find someone who pays attention to all the little details that make them feel a certain way about their healthcare beyond the doctor meeting their needs.   Let me be clear: this book does not advocate removing all waiting rooms from our healthcare culture. In many areas, they're necessary. But we need to do more about addressing the small habits medical offices have become accustomed to under the business of busyness and hiding behind the excuse of “Well, that's how we've always done it.” For patients in today's healthcare culture, the most challenging part is not the actual waiting but when we feel that the medical staff and our Doctors have forgotten about us and don't meet our expectations. We get a feeling when we're on the other side of you and your team.   Like it or not, this is a marketing book, but not in the traditional sense. Old-school marketing tells customers (i.e., patients) that you control the message. Today, that theory doesn't hold water. Today, new school marketing, especially in healthcare settings, says, “The customers (i.e., patients) inform others about you.” This is where feelings get involved, and a simple appointment can turn into a remarkable and memorable story for patients who will tell others about you and your team. You see, it's about the front office staff talking with the patients until the insurance benefits and bills are really understood. It's about the smile from the nurse and the conversation about your kids in the exam room while you're stepping onto the scale. Every Patient who leaves your practice will tell someone else a story. What you and your team do throughout the entire patient journey helps each person “feel” like they really matter to you. It's gratitude and servanthood in healthcare at its best.   Embracing concierge medicine, doctors and their medical offices plan for, prepare for, and follow habits in their practice that create a meaningful connection with their patients. Patients get a feeling about these practices, and inside this book, we'll share some of those stories.   "Hospitality is a process, but the patient should never feel processed,” says Tetreault. “Unfortunately, that's just how it is. We cannot accept that. This new customer service book (and a little marketing) is designed to inform doctors and medical office personnel about better preparing today to exceed patient expectations tomorrow. It will identify everyday healthcare customer service dilemmas and help you and your team navigate the switchbacks and speedbumps so you can lead the patient where you want them to go without that awkward feeling. The ultimate destination isn't a satisfied patient. It's a raving storyteller who leaves your practice feeling like 'I feel cared for. I feel seen. I feel heard and I feel like they ALL care about me!'"   Disclaimer: We're still learning, too, so don't confuse our passion with thinking that we have it all figured out. We don't. We want to help design a map and send it back to a few in healthcare that are willing to follow. Check back often for this book's updated version and bonus content!

A personal revelation, sparked by her mother's Parkinson's diagnosis, led Nicole to pivot from a conventional career to a mission in neuroscience communication. She walks us through her fascinating journey, unveiling the power of focusing on strengths over deficits in the neurodiverse community and how she is using this paradigm-shifting approach to write her book on neurodiversity.Nicole doesn't stop at just reshaping perceptions. She's on a mission to transform how we design our societies, workplaces, and especially our education systems to better cater to neurodiverse thinkers. Imagine classrooms designed to foster emotional connection and safety, where students have various modes of communication, production, and access to information. Nicole argues for a radical shift from rote memorization to intellectual, creative, emotional, physical, and sensorial pursuits. "Every year I update the documents and re-organize the dream team of advisors my wife and kids can lean on for the next several months or years after I die," says Tetreault. "It take purposeful planning and I have to stay organized and on top of the documents but I keep them labeled and in one place, so that helps a lot. This [annual one page letter] is by far the greatest gift I can give my wife and kids after I'm gone and gives them the certainty that it's going to be okay. Each year I write a letter to my wife and each kid and to the executor of my will. I write this letter because besides our photos and our memories together, it's the last tangible piece of evidence and gift I can give them. And, it softens the blow with some family members that may create stress for the primary beneficiaries of our estate. This letter is not only an expression of my love for them it's also meant to provide assistance and guidance to my family about items not covered in my Will. It does not change my Will but it will be a parting gift to make the days and months ahead easier to navigate." By Michael Tetreault, Editor, Concierge Medicine Today | Host, Concierge Medicine Forum I turned 45 this year. I am not naive to the fact that may make me still just a kid to many of you reading this. I'm also a parent of 3 kids, husband whom is actively seeking to please and charm his wife despite my many flaws and mistakes. RELATED STORY The Most Overlooked Person In Medicine, Your Spouse As a husband, a Patient to my Doctor, a worrier about all things related to my aging parents I came across a few pieces of helpful advice I thought I would share this week. “A wise and loving husband prepares his wife to be a widow.” ~Author, Unknown I've heard this advice before echoed on radio shows, podcasts and financial planning commercials on occasion. But this year it really stuck with me and having the pleasure to serving you, Physicians and getting to know your spouses' over all of these years I thought I'd sent this piece of advice out into the universe of healthcare, your inbox and the small corners of your practice and hope it sticks. One day is going to come for all of us. Moreover, taking some time over the next month or two and putting together passwords, insurance documents, legacy planning contacts is going to be appreciated when the funeral is over and the work begins. Hey, I don't want to think about it either. Imagine trying to navigate life insurance policies, safety deposit boxes, probate court, family members and the operations of a business all the while attempting to grieve your loss. I want to leave my family, my wife and my kids with something that will help them navigate the next few months or couple of years. I want to leave them with one last gift, of sorts. In today's episode of the “Helping Families Be Happy” podcast, host Dr. Carla Marie Manly, a practicing Clinical Psychologist, Wellness Advocate, and Author based in Sonoma County, California talks with guest Donna Tetreault. They discuss her new book “The CASTLE Method”, a life-changing, and relationship-changing book. This book helps in understanding all these concepts of self-parenting.   Episode Highlights 01:45 – Donna shares that she has been in this child area for a long time with a little bit of a stint in just general assignment reporting. 03:10 – Dr. Carla asks Donna, why compassion is important in a family? 05:00 – Dr. Carla enquires that how can we show compassion to the child? 07:50 - We need to have the acceptance of that child and who they are and not judge and not then turn that into something else that changes who this person is, says Donna. 09:37 – Dr. Carla highlights that when we remove that shaming vocabulary, the child is abler to prosper. 11:06 - We don't want to be doing the shaming because we don't learn when we shame, states Dr. Carla 13:35 – We need to log into emotional security. Donna doesn't think as parents we're necessarily trained or taught how to provide emotional security to our children. 15:24 – Donna talks about SEL (Social Emotional Learning). 16:28 - It's about this emotional security that's built in early on and that also leads us to better mental health and well-being, says Donna. 17:38 - Trust is something that we have to build into ourselves as parents, and then also allow ourselves to trust our children, mentions Donna 19:10 – Donna says, if something comes up, trust what you're thinking and believing and then go to the education part of it and educate yourself on it. 20:05 - What happens when parents break the child's trust, or when the child breaks the parent's trust? How do we handle that in ‘The CASTLE Method'? Dr. Carla enquires 22:24 - When we do something that takes the trust away from our child, we need to say we're sorry, highlights Donna. 25:00 – Donna says, she has to be curious and ask a lot of questions to find out the exact reason why something happening in the story or what's going on. 27:07 – We need to start teaching our kids self-love early on. 29:58 – Donna mentions they're trying to hyper-focus on the ability to allow the child to be proud on his own. 31:42 – Another part of expectations is to promote positivity inside the family and the parents. 33: 33 - We can cultivate and create more joy but it's also okay for us to have times where joy isn't present, states Dr. Carla. 35:00 – Dr. Carla enquires about how can we use ‘The CASTLE Method' to make families be happier? 39:52 - We are compassionate, and accepting, we are creating security, we create trust, and we have love and solid expectations. Expectations that are good, says Dr. Carla. 41:00 – Donna wants to teach young children that we need to be able to forgive our parents and understand and have compassion for them in where they were and how they were parenting. Three Key Points Donna shares that ‘The CASTLE Method' is an acronym that's used as a metaphor to build the castle or the family of your dreams. Not the perfect family. But the best version of your unique family. And so, CASTLE stands for Compassion, Acceptance, Security, Trust, Love, Expectations, plus Education and all of these are foundational principles to build that sound foundation for your family. Donna highlights - that acceptance is about accepting the individual, the child for who they are inside, who they are supposed to be in their lives and not trying to steer their lives, but allowing them to unfold as they should and following them on their path accepting their path. Donna explains, that what she's trying to do with her new Book ‘The CASTLE Method' is, we're together, how are we going to grow each other together to build out the best mom and dad, the best kids, the best family, to the best of our ability, our unique family because no family looks the same. So, it's just about trying to get the family to be the best version of itself.   Tweetable Quotes “Empathy is being able to put yourself in somebody else's shoes, but compassion takes it a step further in that you are working to alleviate the suffering of another”. Donna Tetreault “When we have this compassionate mindset and we practice it, we're really bringing out the best in our family.” - Donna Tetreault “We need to accept a child for who they are in every way.” - Donna Tetreault “Acceptance is not only the antithesis of rejection, but it also means that we're not shaming and judging.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly  “Our brains don't learn when we're shamed.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly  “One strategy that I use throughout the book and inside of this security chapter is emotional security.” - Donna Tetreault “We really need to practice this emotional security.” - Donna Tetreault “If they don't have the empathy or compassion in their leadership, they won't be good leaders.” - Donna Tetreault “Don't ever do something for a child that he can do for himself.” - Donna Tetreault “I know my kid and I want to help my kid be the best version of himself. So, I'm going to trust him.” - Donna Tetreault “If you are a teacher, and you're not following what you're doing as a teacher, you're not going to have any buy-in with the child.” - Donna Tetreault “We teach our children self-esteem, and self-esteem is super important.” - Donna Tetreault “Self-responsibility also builds self-love.” - Donna Tetreault   Resources Mentioned Helping Families be Happy Podcast Apple Dr. Carla Marie Manly Website LinkedIn Twitter   Instagram Donna Tetreault: Website Instagram Facebook  Podcast Editing

The Nats hung on 6-4 in Texas to win a weekend series for the fourth time in five attempts. Al & Mark (Live From Globe Life Field) begin with praise for Jackson Tetreault who only allowed one run in the victory. The Nationals have had a quality start in six of the past seven games and have gone 4-3 in that stretch. (09:45) Tanner Rainey came in to get the Save as a 6-1 lead in the 9th was trimmed to a slight two run edge after Francisco Perez struggled mightily. Mark explains why Perez was tabbed to start the 9th despite not having appeared on the mound in over a week. (15:05) Juan Soto reached base five times on Sunday, four of which came via walk. Soto is now up to a MLB leading 61 walks on the season, 13 more than second place. (23:40) Nelson Cruz had a busy weekend and in the finale he had two hits and three RBIs. A Dallas based reporter tweeted out on Sunday that the controversial call from Saturday involving Cruz was mishandled by MLB. How could such a mistake occur? Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats ended all sorts of losing streaks by beating Philadelphia 9-3 as they had lost eight in a row overall, twelve straight to the Phillies, and thirteen consecutive against NL East foes. Mark & Al tip their caps to Jackson Tetreault who earned his first career victory in only his second career start. Will he get another Major League start? (09:15) Juan Soto capped a frustrating week on a positive note with a crucial three run homer, his 14th of the season. The forgettable home stand included banging his knee against the dugout, being called out for not 100% hustling down the line, and multiple hit-less games. He currently leadx the Majors with 55 walks on the season, nine higher than Kyle Schwarber. (21:08) We analyze the two errors the Nationals committed on Sunday. Lane Thomas could not make a grab in CF and Keibert Ruiz made a poor throw while attempting the back pick play that is becoming his signature move. Are teams becoming wise to his tendency? (35:08) We continue our budding Juneteenth tradition of celebrating an all-time great Homestead Gray. Ray Brown was a superb pitcher who pitched for the Grays in the 30's and 40's and we hear tales of his exploits from Bob Kendrick. The original plan this week was Josiah Gray on Monday and Stephen Strasburg and Tuesday, and it ended up being Earsmo Ramirez and Tetreault, respectively. (16:10) Juan Soto did not play for the first time this season due to the right knee contusion from Monday evening. Will he be back in the lineup on Wednesday? (21:02) Strasburg was placed on the 15 day IL due to a stress reaction to the ribs. Is it related to his TOS surgery? Mark explains the injury, what it means, and the bigger picture options for the World Series MVP.
