Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius Contrary to what I said last week, we are going to continue with our Why did Yes want series this week as we turn back slightly in time to Oliver Wakeman after we inadvertently got Benoit David in the wrong order last time. It was one of the most confusing periods of the band in terms of personnel so I have turned to interviews and accounts from those involved to try and get as close as possible to the truth - see if you agree with what Mark and I discuss in a few moments. Did Oliver know any of the band before he joined? How did they know he was any good? Was it just nepotism? Let us know if you agree with us! https://youtu.be/e3q3tEOP2tM Available now! Episode 139 – Yes Part 21, From a Page The group returns to the late-model Yes catalog with From a Page. This release is a very welcome look back at the lineup-that-never-really-was. These tracks which were ultimately put aside for the sweeping (and wonderful) Fly From Here give us a glimpse of what the Oliver Wakeman, David, Howe, White, Squire configuration could have been. These tracks retain the hallmarks of Yes while showcasing a bit of Benoit David's range and demonstrating that Oliver has a deep understanding of what makes Yes music. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius This week Mark and I had a wide-ranging and engrossing chat about what we would like Warner Music to release now they had acquired the rights to the Atlantic Yes catalogue. (At least I found it engrossing, your mileage may vary.) I am also indebted to Simon Barrow for sending in a fine report on the recent interviews with both Benoit David (which Bob Keeley also sent to me) and Jon Davison about their experiences as lead singers for the band. What kinds of product would we like from Warner? What advice would we give Warner on what not to do? How does Benoit David feel about his time with Yes? Vinyl - in colour! It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the LOST. We are paying tribute to another titan of rock drummers! Rest In Peace Alan. “Where are the biggest hurdles as a Director to grow the game in the U.S.A.?” The mentality of a young player is key to growing in the sport and requires keen observation. As a longtime coach and instructor, he knows that his role comes with great responsibility. As he navigated through the courses of obtaining his license, it was made clear that the role of a coach is more of an educator than an instructor. Jason chats with Benoit about the “less is more” approach and why parents play a key role in the growth of a player. Additionally, Benoit shares his journey as a young player in Australia, a coach earning his license in Europe, and how that affects his approach as a Director. NOTE: When we originally chatted with Benoit in early 2022, he was the Academy Director with San Diego Surf Academy and is now working with the Academy at LA Galaxy.  About Benoit David Benoit David was born in Pambula, New South Wales, Australia and began coaching in 2008. While playing in France, he began studying to be a coach and obtained certification through the French Football Federation. Prior to joining the LA Galaxy as their U15 coach, Benoit was the Boys Director at San Diego Surf Soccer Club and held various coaching roles at FC Golden State and LAFC. Outside of being on the pitch, Benoit spends time with his family going on hikes with his pup, and following AS Monaco. Dylan Howe Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier It’s somewhat of a bumper episode this week. Later on we speak to Dylan Howe about the Steve Howe Trio album, New Frontier and Mark and I also reveal the answers and winners of the Epic Competition but before all that, there is some pretty amazing breaking news which arrived literally minutes before I recorded today. It’s in the form of a press release: Legendary Prog Rock band YES reveals four previously unreleased 2010 recordings, on the new ‘From A Page’ five piece mini-box set, personally overseen by ex-member Oliver Wakeman. OUT NOW! The New Yes album! 25th October 2019: YES has returned to the recordings made in late 2010 to mix the four completed tracks as new content for a miniature five piece box set of recordings from that era. The box features two booklets and three discs containing the four studio tracks and Live From Lyon 2009, all of which were recorded by the line-up of Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, Benoit David and Oliver Wakeman: 1. To The Moment (6:09) 2. Words on a Page (6:18) 3. From the Turn of a Card (3:24) 4. The Gift of Love (9:52) Oliver Wakeman has personally overseen the preparation of the previously unreleased recordings which were mixed by Karl Groom and mastered by Mike Pietrini. The box and one of the booklets features new artwork by Roger Dean, and the graphic design was undertaken by Oliver Wakeman, plus the set also includes his newly written liner notes about his time in the band. The double CD album LiveFrom Lyon was first released in 2010 and this edition restores “Second Initial” which was previously a Japanese only bonus track. The booklet for Live From Lyon has been re-designed and expanded. Steve Howe described the project as “Good music never goes away or lays down to the commercial pressures that exist. Oliver's compositions, “To the Moment”, “Words on a Page” and “From the Turn of a Card” demonstrate his musicality and talents, while working together on it's arrangement “The Gift of Love” explores the collaborative essence of Yes, pooling ideas and then working together on its arrangement, whilst utilising all of its many themes and variations. Karl Groom and Roger Dean both contributed their skills towards making this a worthy further 'page' in Yes' long and diverse musical adventures." Oliver Wakeman says: “Following Chris Squire’s passing, I felt that the new music we'd created, but not released, should be heard and not sit unfinished on a shelf. And with Steve, Alan and Benoit's enthusiasm for the project, I am proud to know that this music will get to see the light of day and, hopefully, be enjoyed by YES fans as a piece of previously hidden Yes history.”  Alan White added: “I'm pleased to see a gem of YES history coming to fruition in the form of this mini box set. New songs from the past and I'm hoping we can find even more music in the archives for future releases.” The set is IN STOCK NOW and exclusively available from the band’s own Burning Shed store and it cannot be bought in the shops or on Amazon. The mini-box set and a vinyl release of the new songs are exclusively available here: https://burningshed.com/store/yes Listen to the episode and let us know what you think! Since we last covered them (way back in our second episode!) Haken has released an excellent EP called “Restoration”. In the beginning of this week's show the Squatch and Diamond Dave play some music from that EP. In the second part of the show, they put the spotlight on Canadian band Mystery which eventually featured Benoit David (who went on to front Yes during the “Fly From Here” era). This week they cover the first two Mystery releases, with the Benoit David era to follow at a later date. And finally, a great Watch List submission from an Eastern U.S. band called In The Presence Of Wolves from their recently released album “Thalassus”. If you like your Prog HEAVY you don't want to miss these guys! They rock! And don't forget: if you have a Prog band (or know someone who does) you could have your music featured on our Watch List! Send your submissions or links (with a short bio) to the Squatch via e-mail at bigsquatch@verizon.net, or post to the Prog-Watch Facebook page. Also, if you like what we are doing, give us a “like” on Facebook, or follow the Squatch on Twitter @ProgSquatch.
