In Production: Tales from Topographic OceansListening guide YesBooks.com Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller It was a pleasure once again to welcome Oliver Wakeman onto the YMP. He came along to talk about his new album, Anum Cara, and, as you might expect, I couldn't help throwing a couple of Yes related questions in as well. Listen carefully towards the end of the conversation and you'll hear about an abandoned Yes project that Oliver would have been involved in. Head over to the show notes for this episode to see the videos Oliver has created to accompany the album and why not order yourself a copy of the CD rather than streaming the album. Is this a folk album? Who else is playing? Is that really Oliver on guitar? Keyboard virtuoso Oliver Wakeman visited us on UAWIL #156 to talk about the John Wetton (Asia, King Crimson, UK) box set as it was being released. We had a wonderful time chatting with Oliver as we are big fans of John Wetton and John had been a mentor and friend to Oliver as they toured together in the early 2000s. We had so much fun that we asked him to come back to promote one of his own projects once he was ready. As Oliver has just released Anam Cara, a solo album 20 years in the making, he was gracious enough to join us again to discuss this beautiful new album. But before you dismiss this as an over the top keyboard showcase, understand that's not this album at all. Oliver talks about how he writes songs in different styles or buckets - Celtic songs, acoustic songs, keyboard prog songs, love songs - and comes up with a theme for each of his solo albums. This album is a Celtic album and though you'll hear some amazing work on the keys from Oliver, you'll also hear a great deal of acoustic melody from guitarist Oliver Day (Fragile). Singer Hayley Griffiths (Riverdance) lends her lovely and powerful voice to give these songs the heart and soul they deserve. With Tory Donockley (Nightwish) and Scott Higham (Pendragon) rounding out the talent that helped bring Oliver's music to light, you have an album rich in texture of which you will discover many layers upon repeated listens. We talk about what Oliver loves about music, how songs can change peoples lives in unexpected ways and when you might be able to see him play live in the future. Intro music from:Arthemis - Survivor (Destiny's Child Cover)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjYCOtYjCY4The Survivor is a 1981 supernatural horror Australian-British co-production directed by David Hemmings and starring Robert Powell, Jenny Agutter, and Joseph Cotten. In Adelaide, Australia (not Eton in the UK as in the original novel written by James Herbert), airline pilot David Keller (played by Powell) survives the crash of his Boeing 747-200, unhurt despite all 300 passengers dying in the accident. With no memories of the accident, he starts to suffer strange supernatural visions.Director David Hemmings is most famous for his acting roles, including Dildano in Barbarella, Marcus Daly in Dario Argento's Deep Red, and Thomas, the fashion photographer in the hugely successful avant-garde mystery film Blowup – a role turned down by Sean Connery because director Michelangelo Antonioni would not show him the full script but only a seven-page treatment stored in a cigarette packet. Hemmings would later feature in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Connery 37 years later.Robert Powell, best known for his portrayal of a charismatic cult leader/son of a carpenter in the 1977 epic television drama series Jesus of Nazareth, also played secret agent Richard Hannay in The Thirty-Nine Steps, appeared in Ken Russell's Tommy as Captain Walker and, at the request of his friend and golf partner, comedian Jasper Carrott, co-starred in the BBC sitcom The Detectives (which ran for five series!). He also lent his voice to the 2002 rock opera The Hound of the Baskervilles by Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman, playing John Watson. Powell was considered for several roles in Lifeforce (featured in episode 39 of this podcast). A founder member of the Social Democratic Party in 1981, he campaigned alongside Barry Norman on behalf of the party's first leader, Roy Jenkins.Jenny Agutter (OBE), who plays the role of Hobbs the clairvoyant (a male character in the novel), is best known for her ongoing role in the inexplicably popular Call the Midwife. She also starred in two adaptations of The Railway Children, the critically acclaimed film Walkabout, and, relevant to this podcast, An American Werewolf in London (listen to episode 26 for more info). The film also features Joseph Cotten, (best man at Orson Welles's wedding to Rita Hayworth) appeared in five films selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. In addition to these classics, he appeared in many films and TV programs, including, pertinent to this podcast, one episode of Tales of the Unexpected. He later admitted, "I was in a lot of junk. I get nervous when I don't work." This was his final motion picture, suffering a stroke shortly after working on it.James Herbert, author of the source novel, sent a note to David Hemmings offering his assistance. He never received a reply, and in 1988 dismissed this film and the later Deadly Eyes (the film adaptation of The Rats) as "They're terrible...absolute rubbish. I can only say - don't blame me." The Survivor was Herbert's third novel, published in 1976, coming after The Rats and The Fog.The music for this film is by Brian May! …but not the one you're thinking of... This is the Australian Brian May, who has an impressive musical CV, including: The Blue Lagoon, Gallipoli, Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Missing in Action 2 and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. This was the first Australian movie to cost more than $1 million (Australian) to make. The location was shifted to OZ as a complex tax dodge, allowing English investors to completely write-off on the whole film. Oliver Wakeman Talks to Phil Aston - The Now Spinning Magazine Podcast This is the second time I have interviewed Oliver, last time we talked about John Wetton and his time with YES. In this interview we talk about his new Celtic Prog tinged album 'Anam Cara'. We go through each track and it is amazing to hear the stories behind each song and how the album came together. This will certainly be in my top albums of 2024. All the songs and lyrics are composed by Oliver and the band he has pulled together to record this a just stunning. A special mention needs to go to Hayley Griffiths who has such a wonderful voice and here interpretation of Oliver Wakemans lyrics is amazing. The album also features Oliver Day: David Mark Pearce, Troy Donockley, Robert McClung, Mick Allport, Steve Amadeo & Scott Higham. Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller This week, Mark and I talked about the situation in Yes at the time Geoff Downes rejoined for Fly From Here - around 2010-11. It's a contentious time - but then again when isn't with Yes? Oliver Wakeman had to make way for the return of Downes who had worked very closely with Steve Howe in Asia for many years and, when Trevor Horn was brought in to produce the new album, perhaps the writing was on the wall for a Downes redux. All was not well between certain other members of the band either... Why did Geoff return (trip)? Whose idea was it? Why was Oliver Wakeman 'let go'? Following up on last week's 2023 in Review Part 1: Albums, Authors & Podcasters, now we're focused on the concerts that we covered on the show (and the ones we didn't), the artists & legends we interviewed and reveal our Top 10 Ugly American Werewolf in London episodes of 2023. Thought The Wolf had to leave Amsterdam for his homeland early in 2023, he didn't sell all the concert tickets he bought. He made a trip back in April to see Metallica on the first 2 nights of their No Repeat Weekend Tour. And The Wolf met up in Amsterdam with Action Jackson over the summer to take him to his first ever Iron Maiden concert. It was so great they went to see the boys again in Antwerp and then enjoyed some unexpected encounters at the hotel. Plus our host took The Wolfcub to see KISS one last time. We love talking with the talented musicians who make the rock music we love and we were honored to host an array of great guests from up and coming artists like Jimmy Maddon to legends like Terry Reid and Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds. Talking to Steve Kilbey of The Church was a treat and getting to know rockers in their prime like Scott Holiday of Rival Sons and Oliver Wakeman who we'll be seeing for years to come And stay tuned as we unveil our Top 10 episodes (by download) for 2023. Fans of our show know that The Wolf and Action Jackson have a special place in their hearts for 80s prog/pop rock band Asia. While we've spoken with keyboardist Geoff Downes (UAWIL 79) and drummer Carl Palmer (UAWIL 80), we never had the opportunity to speak with singer/bassist John Wetton as he passed away before we started our show. However, there have been many celebrations of John's life and works in 2023 and to tell us more about the kind of person John Wetton was, we've enlisted the great Oliver Wakeman to offer some stories about the man himself. Oliver toured with Yes during 2009-2011 and during that time, befriended John Wetton as Asia was touring with Yes. Despite Oliver being a generation younger and the fact that John had worked with his father Rick, John took Oliver under his wing and they formed a bond that had a big impact on Oliver (and John too). Oliver relates some stories of his time with John including watching him play every night, how John checked in on him as he slated to transition out of Yes and one time John joined Oliver and his band to play Heat of the Moment. Oliver will also give us some tidbits about music he's working on, including his plan to play songs he wrote with Yes on From A Page live this spring at Winters End Festival. Oliver is helping to promote the new box set John Wetton: An Extraordinary Life which is out November 24 around the world - an 8 disc set of his solo albums with bonus tracks and discs full of rarities, unreleased gems and live cuts (more information below). We had a great time chatting with Oliver and hope you'll enjoy our conversation about John, Yes, prog music and more! The An Extraordinary Life box set contains 8 newly remastered CDs, featuring the six solo albums Wetton released between 1980 and 2011. Each album now includes special bonus tracks. Additionally, two further discs are included which feature a gold mine of rare, live and unreleased material from the vaults, compiled by John`s archivist, Rick Nelson. Check out trailer for the box set here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EE0HFoq2Ck Housed in a sumptuous 12 by 12 box, this set includes a 64-page book with an introduction by legendary artist, Roger Dean and contains comprehensive sleeve notes by Nick Shilton, author of Wetton's biography, An Extraordinary Life, published earlier this year. The book also features a raft of photographs taken from the Wetton archive and has been designed by John's long-time friend, Michael Inns. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius Mark and I really enjoyed listening to/watching Oliver's album/DVD 'Coming To Town - Live In Katowice'. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius Contrary to what I said last week, we are going to continue with our Why did Yes want series this week as we turn back slightly in time to Oliver Wakeman after we inadvertently got Benoit David in the wrong order last time. It was one of the most confusing periods of the band in terms of personnel so I have turned to interviews and accounts from those involved to try and get as close as possible to the truth - see if you agree with what Mark and I discuss in a few moments. Did Oliver know any of the band before he joined? How did they know he was any good? Was it just nepotism? Let us know if you agree with us! https://youtu.be/e3q3tEOP2tM Available now! Oliver Wakeman joins us once again for another Yesshift interview! He has been up to A LOT. He took part in The Other Coronation Concert in May, he's been working on an album titled Anam Cara, and he'll be performing material from Yes' From a Page and more at the Summer's End Festival this autumn. Check out the conversation! NOTE: Dan's mic isn't working for the beginning, but his comments are very spaced apart and you can still hear Steven and Oliver. Dan's first audible comment is about 17 minutes in, and there's also a moment 5 minutes in where Oliver's screen freezes, but just be patient, as the whole interview is worth checking out. 1:10 - The Other Coronation Concert recap 9:45 - Strawbs documentary 12:00 - Yes: The Tormato Story 17:00 - Remembering John Wetton 22:45 - Interacting with Yes members 25:45 - Memories of Alan White and Chris Squire 40:50 - Thoughts on Patrick Moraz and Relayer 43:10 - Fav obscure Yes works + ideas for In the Present and Close to the Edge and Back Tour setlists 47:55 - Summer's End Festival 54:35 - Anam Cara 1:04:20 - Different styles + Yes 3D Talk 1:06:55 - Frasier Talk Relevant Links: -Summer's End: https://www.summersend.co.uk/ -John Wetton memorial concert: https://www.tradingboundaries.com/concert/ -John Wetton: An Extraordinary Life: http://www.johnwettonbook.com -Yes: The Tormato Story: http://www.tormatobook.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yesshift/support

Episode 139 – Yes Part 21, From a Page The group returns to the late-model Yes catalog with From a Page. This release is a very welcome look back at the lineup-that-never-really-was. These tracks which were ultimately put aside for the sweeping (and wonderful) Fly From Here give us a glimpse of what the Oliver Wakeman, David, Howe, White, Squire configuration could have been. These tracks retain the hallmarks of Yes while showcasing a bit of Benoit David's range and demonstrating that Oliver has a deep understanding of what makes Yes music. On this episode, we review the recent Oliver Wakeman boxset Collaborations, which includes the 2001 album with Steve Howe titled The 3 Ages of Magick, the 2013 album with Gordon Giltrap titled Ravens & Lullabies, and the previously unreleased live album with Giltrap titled From a Stage. Benoît David was even on a version of "From the Turn of the Card" on the studio album with Giltrap! We also go on brief tangents about how a couple Yes shows have been promoted incorrectly, and an article about songs that shaped Geddy Lee's bass playing, which mentioned a couple Yes tracks and a Bill Bruford track. It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the LOST. We are paying tribute to another titan of rock drummers! Rest In Peace Alan. I caught up with composer and keyboard maestro Oliver Wakeman this week to discuss the release of his newest box set, Collaborations. This three-CD set contains new reissues (with bonus tracks) of his The 3 ages of Magick collaboration with Steve Howe and his Ravens & Lullabies album with Gordon Giltrap. There's also a disc of previously unreleased live material with Giltrap and vocalist Paul Manzi (Sweet, ex-Arena). We also spoke about his background, coming from a family of famous keyboard players, his time in Yes and The Strawbs, his solo work, and much more. Produced by Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius This week it's the first part of our next - and presumably last…maybe…what did they do next featuring the 2011-ish departure of keyboardist and true gentleman of prog, Oliver Wakeman. We set you a task to listen to that project before next week's episode, just like we will be doing and if you already know what we are talking about, please do leave your comments on the show notes for this week and we will try and include as many as possible in the episode next time. Video viewable on Spotify. On this last Yesshift episode for the year, we get festive by talking about Christmas solo albums by Yes members. We begin by reviewing Rick Wakeman's Christmas Variations (2000) and Christmas Portraits (2019). The album cover of the former has, fittingly, had variations over the years. We also touch upon the "I Saw Three Ships" cover that Oliver Wakeman performed on with Jeff Scheetz, John Payne, Oliver Wakeman, Pete Coleman, Bob Catley, and Rodney Matthews. Then we talk about Chris Squire's Swiss Choir (2007), followed by Jon Anderson's 3 Ships (1985), including the 2007 bonus tracks. Dan and Steven even each have a story about their respective friends being involved in the "3 Ships" music video and the 2007 bonus track "Give Hope!" Happy holidays to all! On this news episode, after reading a bit of feedback, we go over our thoughts on the possibility of Yes, Asia, and Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy touring next year according to a recent Rolling Stone article. This leads us on an interesting tangent where we voice our opinions on hologram musicians. We also react to the Yes (Official) Facebook post about Alan Simon's Excalibur V. Furthermore, we speculate quite a bit on the future of Yes and its members as we cover Total Mass Retain's recent lineup change and info from recently published interviews with Billy Sherwood, Alan White, Jon Davison, and Oliver Wakeman. Produced by Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius It was a great pleasure to welcome back to the show former Yes keyboard player and prolific solo artist, Oliver Wakeman. We asked him about some of his latest releases including Dark Fables, Tales From Gaslight and his soundtrack to Yendor. It was particularly interesting to hear recollections of working with original Yes guitarist Peter Banks and Oliver also shared some remarkable tales from his Yes days including what happened when he first joined the band in Canada, what Chris Squire said to him and something to do with sellotaping two keyboard pedals together... Was Oliver's entry to the band smooth and straight-forward?What was Peter Banks like to work with? Why does Oliver keep coming back to epic structures and story-telling in his music? Lots of news to catch up on! We begin with info from Lobate Scarp regarding their Indiegogo campaign and news that they, as well as Jon Anderson and Paul Green Rock Academy, are going to be at RoSFest next year! Monday marked an important anniversary for Bill Bruford regarding King Crimson, and it also saw the release of the late Robby Steinhardt's solo album Not in Kansas Anymore, featuring a stacked cast including Patrick Moraz. We then briefly talk about observations regarding release dates of recent and new books Yes: A Visual Biography and Yes in the 1980s. After this, Steven takes some time to provide his review of his Blu-ray art book of The Quest that came in the mail last week. After a mention of a new promo video featuring Jon Davison with John Lodge, we read quotes from interviews with Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman, and talk about the latter's touring updates. We also noticed the upcoming release of Dark Fables by Clive Nolan & Oliver Wakeman. There are some details regarding Trevor Horn's upcoming masterclass and announcement of his involvement in the Dire Straits Legacy tour. Oliver Wakeman: Why do you hate me?... with TRE´s Giles Brown

Living with Ovarian Cancer' is a Podcast full of inspiring stories told by Women or their loved ones, who themselves have lived with, or are still living with Ovarian Cancer. Each Woman's story is a gift; unique and is told from the heart in their own words. I am your host, Diane Evans-Wood. In this episode I am honoured to welcome back Libby Holden with her Husband John. If you listened to episode 1 you will have heard that Libby mentioned a charity song that she and her Husband planned to launch in March, which is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the UK. That song has now become an amazing Album and they hope to raise funds for Professor Charlie Gourley's research into Low grade Ovarian Cancer. In this episode Libby and John tell me all about the songs, the musicians involved and who they are raising money for. Since recording this episode, Libby wrote to tell me that the EP has grown somewhat. It is now a 9 track, 46 minute Album. Musician artistes have generously donated tracks of their own to help raise money for this charitable cause. The EP is available from: https://johnholden.bandcamp.com If you download the EP on the first Friday of the month Bandcamp do not take any fees so 100% of the funds go to the charitable cause. The video can be seen here: https://youtu.be/29oymlgjb_4 The song, Circles, has music by John Holden and lyrics by Elizabeth Holden. Vocalist: Sally Minnear, Keyboards: Vikram Shankar, Guitars: John Holden, Bass: Robin Armstrong and Drums: Henry Rogers The song, Northern Lights, features: Vocalists: Mark Atkinson, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Peter Jones, Sally Minnear and That Joe Payne. Guitar: Michel St Pere, Bass: Jon Camp, Keyboards: Vikram Shankar and Oliver Wakeman and Drums: Gavin Harrison The video features twelve women with low grade ovarian cancer, some who are sadly no longer with us, from the UK, Australia, Canada, India and the USA. Dylan Howe Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier It’s somewhat of a bumper episode this week. Later on we speak to Dylan Howe about the Steve Howe Trio album, New Frontier and Mark and I also reveal the answers and winners of the Epic Competition but before all that, there is some pretty amazing breaking news which arrived literally minutes before I recorded today. It’s in the form of a press release: Legendary Prog Rock band YES reveals four previously unreleased 2010 recordings, on the new ‘From A Page’ five piece mini-box set, personally overseen by ex-member Oliver Wakeman. OUT NOW! The New Yes album! 25th October 2019: YES has returned to the recordings made in late 2010 to mix the four completed tracks as new content for a miniature five piece box set of recordings from that era. The box features two booklets and three discs containing the four studio tracks and Live From Lyon 2009, all of which were recorded by the line-up of Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, Benoit David and Oliver Wakeman: 1. To The Moment (6:09) 2. Words on a Page (6:18) 3. From the Turn of a Card (3:24) 4. The Gift of Love (9:52) Oliver Wakeman has personally overseen the preparation of the previously unreleased recordings which were mixed by Karl Groom and mastered by Mike Pietrini. The box and one of the booklets features new artwork by Roger Dean, and the graphic design was undertaken by Oliver Wakeman, plus the set also includes his newly written liner notes about his time in the band. The double CD album LiveFrom Lyon was first released in 2010 and this edition restores “Second Initial” which was previously a Japanese only bonus track. The booklet for Live From Lyon has been re-designed and expanded. Steve Howe described the project as “Good music never goes away or lays down to the commercial pressures that exist. Oliver's compositions, “To the Moment”, “Words on a Page” and “From the Turn of a Card” demonstrate his musicality and talents, while working together on it's arrangement “The Gift of Love” explores the collaborative essence of Yes, pooling ideas and then working together on its arrangement, whilst utilising all of its many themes and variations. Karl Groom and Roger Dean both contributed their skills towards making this a worthy further 'page' in Yes' long and diverse musical adventures." Oliver Wakeman says: “Following Chris Squire’s passing, I felt that the new music we'd created, but not released, should be heard and not sit unfinished on a shelf. And with Steve, Alan and Benoit's enthusiasm for the project, I am proud to know that this music will get to see the light of day and, hopefully, be enjoyed by YES fans as a piece of previously hidden Yes history.” Alan White added: “I'm pleased to see a gem of YES history coming to fruition in the form of this mini box set. New songs from the past and I'm hoping we can find even more music in the archives for future releases.” The set is IN STOCK NOW and exclusively available from the band’s own Burning Shed store and it cannot be bought in the shops or on Amazon. The mini-box set and a vinyl release of the new songs are exclusively available here: https://burningshed.com/store/yes Listen to the episode and let us know what you think! This week I'm finishing up my coverage of the prolific keyboard maestro, Mr. Clive Nolan! There will be chat about his more recent endeavors, and plenty of great music from his collaboration with Oliver Wakeman, his theater-oriented project Caamora, and, of course, Arena! John Vehadija has reunited with his cast of high class musicians for ‘Truthonomy’, the new album by Light Freedom Revival, which is released on July 3rd, 2018. Along the bright sounds of Jamie Glaser’s acoustic guitar, and Vehadija’s ethereal vocals, Billy Sherwood returns for the rhythm section (Drums and Bass), as well as Oliver Wakeman (piano and keyboards) and Marisa Frantz (Harmony Vocals). Eric Gillette also joins in the project by providing additional electric guitar as well as mixing and mastering. This talented team was called up by Vehadija once again to help him express his ideas in the form of a new concept album that offers new insights in his own spiritual journey and the science of Truthonomy.
Produced by Robert Nasir, Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier We consider the singles (if any) from Fly From Here this week and talk about this difficult time in the band's history - a bit. There's also a Two Pence segment where Mark is disappointed with his latest Pledge Music acquisition... Were there any singles from Fly From Here? Why was Oliver Wakeman not on this album?
